These scenes of London life (particularly
as it is lived in Battersea) have a few parallels in contemporary writing.
They are deft, observant and convey an immediacy of time and place which is uncanny and sometimes disturbing - like unexpectedly overhearing a conversation not intended for your ears.
The author has a superb gift for catching spoken idioms, and the characters observed in these pages - ton-up boys and their girls,clip-joint hostesses, old women, children - convey that caustic, ironic and compassionate feeling for life in a manner that vividly surpasses a limited vocabulary.A turn of phrase,a terse expression, frequently contains startling flashes of wit and poetry.
And Battersea, that teeming waste-land of brick south of the river, dominated by the four belching chimneys of its power station, has found its poet in Nell Dunn.
Since April 2013,aghain in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too!

The battle between Richard Dunwoody and Adrian Maguire for the jockey's championship made the 1993-94 National Hunt season one of the most enthralling of recent years.Dunwoody was the previous season's champion, with Martin Pipe's all- conquering stable looking certain to provide him with a never-flagging supply of winners.Maguire was the young pretender, with the reputation of being the most talented young jockey since - Richard Dunwoody.
Maguire set the early pace and soon built up a substantial lead but, once the Pipe machine overcame a faltering start, Dunwoody closed the gap relentlessly. For month upon month their rivalry lit up the jumping scene. Then,a sensational barging match between the two in a minor race at Nottingham left the champion with a fourteen-day suspension which ruled him
out of the Cheltenham Festival and seemed to present the jockeys' title to his rival.
On his return from suspension Dunwoody immediately reduced the deficit, then dazzled the racing world with a masterful ride on Miinnehoma to win the Grand National.Three weeks before the end of the season he finally overtook his opponent, only for Maguire to fight back and force the issue to the very last day.
'Duel',Richard Dunwoody's own chronicle of a memorable season,is the tale of a famous battle between two great jockeys, and an insight into the dedication, courage and skill which have made Dunwoody a master of his craft.

Jacquie Durrell is married to Gerald Durrell - the Durrell of 'The Overloaded Ark.' and 'The Bafut Beagles.' - and Mrs Gerald Durrell is sick and tired of being told how lucky she is to have such a famous husband and lead such a glamorous life.Very much a personality in her own right, she decided to describe her own experiences of living with the Durrells and their animals.
So she wrote this book about her entry into the Durrell menagerie and her subsequent encounters with beasts both human and animal. Her astringent and very personal observations on the situations in which she found herself will appeal to anyone who has read her husband's books, visited the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust Zoo,which they started together,or seen their various successful television series on animal collecting in remote parts of the world. Those who read and relished Gerald Durrell's 'My Family and Other Animals.' can also renew their acquaintance with the rest of that intriguing and now famous family.
Jacquie Durrell's may not be a glamorous life, but it undoubtedly contains more than a common share of animals, adventure, discomfort, excitement and romance, and it makes very lively reading.

His first, and the only book written as Gerald M. Durrell, and only title for this publisher, Faber and Faber, and the only Sabine Baur illustrated title. The book's success brought about a change of publisher (to his friend, Rupert Hart-Davis) and the start of a memorable collaboration with illustrator Ralph Thompson.
Ralph Thompson (b. 3 June 1913, d. 3 May 2009) was a British artist and book illustrator, who specialized in pen and ink sketches of animal subjects. His most noteworthy works are his series of book illustrations for the famous naturalist and author Gerald Durrell in the period 1954 to 1964 when Durrell was associated with the publishing firm of Rupert Hart-Davis.In that decade, between themselves they produced a delightful and highly popular series of titles based on Durrell's idiosyncratic combination of travel,animal-collecting and natural history - some of the funniest and most charming titles of their kind ever written.
Mr Gerald Durrell has made animal collecting his career, and has given some diverting broadcasts from the B.B.C. on the subject. This, his first book,is an account of an expedition he made to the little- known territory of the British Cameroons,West Africa,to capture and bring alive to this country specimens of the unique fauna. He tells with charm and humour of his experiences in the great rain forests, and of his struggles in capturing such extraordinary and rare creatures as the Angwantibo, the Black-legged Mongoose, and that 'living fossil' the Potogamale.
Whether he describes hunting with a torch at night in the forest; the trials of hand- rearing baby animals; or the strange customs and beliefs of his native hunters,Mr. Durrell writes vividly and amusingly.
To the vast majority of readers who have never been in the jungle and whose experiences of animals is limited to visits to the Zoo,'THE OVERLOADED ARK.' will prove a refreshingly different kind of travel book and will give an unrivalled picture of West Africa with its unusual and entertaining inhabitants, human and animal.

In his Zoo in Jersey,Gerald Durrell has created something which is far rarer than it should be: a scientific centre for breeding and research which is also a source of entertainment and delight to all who visit it.The same should be true of every zoo but alas it is not: in the
author's words it is more often 'a place where you reluctantly take the children to ride on an elephant and get sick on ice cream.A place where animals are imprisoned.' With his inimitable combination of amusing anecdote and hard- hitting polemic,Gerald Durrell tells how he set out to do something different; of his triumphs and disasters.Nobody can communicate more vividly the excitement, the fun,and occasionally the horror of living with and for animals.'What dedicated Harley Street specialist,' he asks,'would disrobe himself before an audience of some 200 fascinated Africans and prod himself all over with a hypodermic syringe,in order to persuade a highly suspicious baboon that this was a most desirable and fashionable experience?' He might have asked what other zoologist would do so.Exuberant, enthusiastic, immensely professional, his personality emerges as strongly in these pages as it does in the Zoo itself.
Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too!

While sunbathing on the shores of Greece, Penelope,Simon and Peter find a strange parcel which talks! Further investigation uncovers a parrot and a spider who have been expelled from Mythologia,a land of mythical animals.Parrot explains that the land has been taken over by the Cockatrices, and unless something is done quickly many of the animals will be destroyed.
The children readily agree to accompany Parrot back to Mythologia. And once there, they rally the other animals to the cause of overthrowing the Cockatrices.Soon the Unicorns, the Mermaids, the Sea- Serpent, the Firedrakes and Mandrakes,as well as Ethelbert, the turn-coat spying Toad, are involved in a bold plan to capture Cockatrice Castle, seize the three Great Books of Government and restore Mythologia to its rightful ruler, the famous magician Hengist Hannibal Junketberry.
This delightful,fast-moving fantasy is a delicious blend of adventure and lovely Durrell humour.

No one but Gerald Durrell could wake up under a Land-Rover in a cold Patagonian dawn and watch a family of foxes performing a Chinese ballet with a roll of lavatory paper, and no one else could describe their grace and absurdity so vividly. He had gone to that windswept and beautiful land to film penguins who had camped themselves on an arena by the shore where the sand was dotted with relics of an extinct race of Indians, and to watch the placid amours of the fur seals and the gross indolence of the elephant seals, and his description of these creatures is as lively as any film.
Besides meeting guanacos and rheas on the pampas he was also out to collect what animals he could from a tropical paradise in the opposite end of Argentina with the delicious name of Jujuy.A wealth of macaws, parrots (one of them with a treacherous flow of abuse) seriemas and other birds keep him busy and the reader entertained and amused, and so does his ingenuity in dealing with such diverse mammals as a half-starved ocelot and a peccary with pneumonia,to say nothing of his crazy and unsuccessful attempt to catch a vampire bat using his own frozen toe as bait.

How do you start a zoo? To his own cost, but to our delight,Gerald Durrell has found the awkward, complicated and fantastically funny answers to this unusual question, and he offers them in these pages with his usual warm delight in the antics of animals and the oddities of men.
Putting (as it were) the cart before the horse, Mr Durrell travelled to West Africa to assemble his stock of rare creatures, ranging from bushbabies and chimpanzees to tree-frogs and green mambas. The Fon of Bafut, his old friend (and ours too),proved once again a resourceful and convivial host,as Mr. Durrell caught and packed his curious luggage and came back to England. So far,so good.
But a zoo cannot be kept in your luggage indefinitely,as Mr. Durrell found when he became involved in a protracted battle with the local council over possible sites.Meanwhile, maddening the neighbours, bringing the police, the zoo took up residence in a marquee in Mr Durrell's back garden,to be rescued at last by a happier ending than anyone, least of all Mr Durrell himself, could have imagined.

Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional for a book of it's age and nature, i.e. an ephemeral p/back Original, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/ state of preservation and presentation. It really is an exceptional copy for condition, brightness and cleanliness.
On 28th October 1940 HMS Jervis Bay,an ancient cargo ship armed with a small number of obsolete guns, set out to escort 37 freighters and tankers across the North Sea.Unexpectedly discovered by the Admiral Scheer, one of Germany's most feared pocket battleships, the Jervis Bay captain immediately dispersed convoy HX 84 to hide in the twilight of a rising winter storm.Outgunned and with no hope of survival,Captain Fegen and over 190 of the 256 Jervis Bay crew sacrificed themselves as they took the battle to the enemy in a one-sided duel with the Admiral Scheer, fighting to secure the safe passage of the ships in their charge.
This heroic battle is firmly placed in contemporary naval and political contexts and includes graphic descriptions of battle scenes and action aboard the ships, together with the harrowing aftermath as men struggled to survive the icy seas.Personal stories, recounted for the first time, depict courage and resourcefulness beyond the call of duty from all crew members. For his valour,Captain Fegen was posthumously awarded Britain's only Victoria Cross for convoy defence.
"The Jervis Bay was being pounded by 5.9-inch explosive projectiles, fragmentation shells bursting over the ship, and fire shells meant to ignite anything flammable that was not yet afire.Wooden fittings that had not been removed in her first refit, remaining timber deck planks, and thick layers of paint provided fuel for the incendaries.Every overhead explosion produced a vicious spray of splinters that,on hitting the ship, sounded like s clangorous string of Chinese firecrackers. The 'light' bombardment intensified, and Hanlon squeezed himself into a bulkhead partition for protection against flying debris and shrapnel."

Toby can't remember a time when he didn't live at the seaside hotel.
Left there as a baby,he's grown up without many friends.
One windy day,he's sent down to the
beach to look for Cook's lost laundry. It's the noise that attracts him first, like teeth cracking on seashells. Then he sees her,a pale, thin girl, lying at the water's edge with her long green tail swaying gently in the shallows.
Eliza Flot is a stranded mermaid and Toby takes to her like a fish to
water. When he meets her extraordinary parents,he practically becomes part of the family! But Toby's new friendship arouses suspicion back at the hotel. Can Toby
and the Flots come up with a plan that will change their lives forever? Author's first children's novel.

On 25 May 1982,at a critical juncture in the Falklands War,the destroyer HMS Coventry was attacked by Argentinian aircraft. In a devastating strike, she was hit by three bombs, two of which exploded inside her hull, killing nineteen of her crew and leaving many others badly injured. Within minutes,Coventry had capsized, and would finally sink off Pebble Island the following day.The loss of HMS Coventry was deeply traumatic: it was the first occasion since the Second World War that a British captain and his crew had to abandon a stricken ship and take to life rafts in the cold and unforgiving waters of the South Atlantic.
'Four Weeks in May' is the highly personal, often harrowing story of Coventry's war told by her captain,David Hart Dyke.It is the tale of a proud fighting ship of the Royal Navy and of the complex ties that bind a commander and his crew, especially in times of mortal danger. It is also the record of one man's private anxieties about his responsibilities as captain, the welfare of his men,and his wife and two young daughters back at home.
'Four Weeks in May' is a riveting account of how men prepare for a war they never expected to fight and how they endure its privations and, finally, its horrors.

"I'd come from a long ways off and had started a long ways down. But now destiny was about to manifest itself.I felt like it was looking right at me and nobody else."
So writes Bob Dylan in 'Chronicles:Volume
One',his remarkable book exploring critical junctures in his life and career.
Through Dylan's eyes and open mind,we see Greenwich Village, circa 1961,when he first arrives in Manhattan.Dylan's New York is a magical city of possibilities - smoky,
nightlong parties; literary awakenings; transient loves and unbreakable friendships.Elegiac observations are punctuated by jabs of memories, penetrating and tough. With the book's side trips to New Orleans,Woodstock,Minnesota and points west,'Chronicles: Volume One' is an intimate and intensely personal recollection of extraordinary times.
By turns revealing, poetical, passionate and witty,'Chronicles: Volume One' is a mesmerizing window on Bob Dylan's thoughts and influences.Dylan's voice is distinctly American: generous of spirit, engaged, fanciful and rhythmic.Utilizing his unparalleled gifts of storytelling and the exquisite expressiveness that are the hallmarks of his music,Bob Dylan turns 'Chronicles: Volume One' into a poignant reflection on life, and the people and places that helped shape the man and the art.

Surfacing for the first time after more than forty years,'Hollywood Foto-Rhetoric' is a remarkable,long-lost manuscript written by Bob Dylan in the 1960's, inspired by renowned photographer Barry Feinstein's portraits of Tinseltown. These twenty-three prose poems are thought-provoking,witty,and thoroughly unexpected observations of a bygone era,and through the lens of Feinstein's camera they speak volumes about the faces and places that have graced the City of Angels.
Images like those of Judy Garland,Marlene
Dietrich, and Steve McQueen resonate with our collective memory, while photographs of hopeful starlets, movie studio backlots, and sunny, palm tree'd boulevards evoke the timeless allure of all things Hollywood.
'Hollywood Foto-Rhetoric' marks a unique collaboration: With his unerring eye,Barry Feinstein captured unforgettable moments in stunning black-and-white,such as Marilyn Monroe's swimming pool on the day she died, and Frank Sinatra celebrating at John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Ball.In the provocative accompanying text,Bob Dylan's quixotic, expressive lyricism redefines silver screen nostalgia.
Bob Dylan is one of the most influential figures in the history of popular music,
having released forty-four albums including his most recent number one release,'Modern Times' (then 2008).Author of the critically acclaimed 'Chronicles', Dylan continues to tour extensively and is the host of XM Satellite Radio's Theme Time Radio Hour.
Barry Feinstein's photography has appeared in 'Life','Look','Time', 'Esquire','Newsweek',and scores of other magazines and album covers. His photographs of Bob Dylan,George Harrison,Janis Joplin, and others are considered classics of the genre.

Ford of America was only months old when the first Fords came to the Shippeys' American Manufacturers Direct Supply Agency showroom on Long Acre,London.Arthur Shippey thought he could sell a franchise for Ford cars so in March 1904 he displayed three at the Agricultural Hall, Islington.
They were on the stand of the American Motor Car Agency, whose proprietor Aubrey Blakiston quickly ordered a dozen more. The car market looked promising and Blakiston exchanged shares in his syndicate against a 16-year lease of Shippey's Central Emporium showroom,a prospect that appealed to an employee,Percival Lea Dewhurst Perry.
Perry became a shareholder in the American Motor Car Agency and was on hand when the first consignment of Fords were delivered in wooden crates. On 29 March 1911 Perry set up Ford Motor Company (England) Ltd,from a showroom at 55-59 Shaftesbury Avenue, setting out to make Model T's at Trafford Park,Manchester, the hub of Britain's rail network.By 1914 he was distributing vehicles in covered wagons to 1000 dealers. The workforce welcomed Ford; it paid the best rates,10d to 1s 3d (4p to 6.25p) an hour, although under their terms of employment everyone had to be able to shift from trade to trade.Pre-First World War Britain became Ford's second biggest market after the US, and Ford turned out,in the long run, more stable and consistent in the United Kingdom than the indigenous motor industry. It became integrated so completely into domestic industrial and manufacturing that it was often regarded (sometimes even by Detroit) as quintessentially British.
The nation's hundred year love affair with Ford is celebrated in this book that rekindles the affection generations had with the big V8s,the practical nimble Anglias and Prefects, milestone cars like the Consul,Zephyr and Zodiac of the 1950s and the Escorts,Cortinas and Granadas later. For 40 years the Transit set a benchmark for middle weight commercial traffic.Ford's place in the history of motor racing was secured at Le Mans, the world championship grand prix circuits of Formula 1 and was even successfully exported to Indianapolis,to the astonishment of the only slightly senior Ford of America.
'THE FORD IN BRITAIN CENTENARY FILE' celebrates 100 years of the Ford Motor Company in Britain. It includes a complete history of the company plus a car by car review and technical spec of every model over the last century.

By reliving the Test matches between England and the West Indies, this book traces the relationship between the two sides from the "blackwash" of 1984 to the considerably altered position of 1988.Photographs and text, aided by score sheets and charts, give a record of the highlights. The combination of word-pictures with photographs that excitingly display style and character in action makes 'West Indian Summer' the ideal account with which to recall the series and to keep as a permanent record. Theodor Seuss Geisel, under the pseudonyms Dr.Seuss,Theo. LeSeig and Rosetta Stone, was the creator of 'Horton the Elephant', 'The Grinch' and 'The Cat in the Hat'.His madcap menagerie of well- loved children's characters stands among some of the finest in all of children's illustrated fiction and literature.
What goes on inside the mind of such a genius? How do his thought processes work and where do these brilliant, quirky ideas come from? Geisel was an intensely private person,a man for whom fame was not always welcomed and accepted,a man happier at his drawing table than in front of a reporter or biographer.
His books were produced on a large scale and periodically reprinted, endured and enduring as long as there are readers to revel in them. The periodicals in which his work appeared were generally printed only the once,as people threw them away each issue when the next one arrived.

M.G. Eberhart has never written a more fascinating or more baffling story than this tale of murder among the residents of a picturesque mansion close by a big army training camp.Mrs. Eberhart combines astonishing skill at weaving an intricate plot with the born novelist's sense of style and characterisation. As we learn more of the tangled affairs of the heiress,Victoria Steane,we find our emotion completely tied up with her uncertain fate. Not without reason does the yellow-eyed District Attorney fix upon her as the guilty party in the murders of the "unidentified woman" and of Clistie Forbes, friend of Victoria's dead mother.Somewhere, somehow,Vicky knew that there was one master key to the murders, but it was not until still another death that it all came clear.
Mignon Good Eberhart [b. July 6,1899 – d. October 8,1996] was an American author of mystery novels. She had one of the longest careers (from the 1920s to the 1980s) among major American mystery writers. She published her first novel,'The Patient in Room 18', which introduced her series character Nurse Sarah Keate and her boyfriend Detective Lance O'Leary.A second novel,'While the Patient Slept',also featured Keate.Sarah Keate, though popular as the protagonist of Eberhart's first five novels, proved to be the author's only series sleuth, making only a couple of appearances after the early 1930s.
Instead,Eberhart wrote mostly 'standalone' mysteries, something fairly unusual for a crime writer with such a large output. At the end of the 1930s, Eberhart had become the leading female crime novelist in the US and was one of the highest-paid female crime novelists in the world, next to Agatha Christie. She was one of the first of many writers called,by their publishers,"America's Agatha Christie".

Based on the BBC Radio 4 series Little Lifetimes.
In this addictive short story collection, twenty-four very different women reach a pivotal moment in their lives.
A widow is liberated by a new job, but keeps it secret from her family. A date in suburbia has dramatic results. A seamstress takes revenge on an unsuspecting customer, while in France, a mother is promised 'fantastic news' - and lets her imagination run away with her.
With each story, Jenny Eclair introduces a fascinating new character. And behind each woman lies a gripping tale - of betrayal, of love, of hope and defiance.
Funny, heart-breaking, inspiring - and packed with wicked one liners - this wonderful collection shows Jenny Eclair's exceptional talent for observation at its very best.

After the opening essay on the general significance of literature,Eco examines a number of major authors from the Western canon.A stimulating chapter on the poetic qualities of Dante's Paradiso is followed by one on the style of the Communist Manifesto. The next three essays centre on nineteenth - and early twentieth-century literature: one on the French writer Nerval's masterpiece,'Sylvie' (a major influence on Eco and a novella that he translated into Italian), one on Oscar Wilde's love of paradox, and one on Joyce's views on language.
The last three pieces deal with the road that leads from Cervantes via Swift to Borges' Library of Babel, then an essay on Eco's own anxiety about Borges' influence on him,and the volume ends with an article on the enigmatic Italian critic and anthropologist Piero Camporesi.
'On Literature' is a provocative and entertaining collection of sprightly essays on the key texts that have shaped Eco the novelist and critic. This volume will appeal to anyone interested in how new light is shed on old masters by a great contemporary mind.

They are called the Dreamers. They look like sleeping children. They are,in fact, Gods. There are eight elder Gods, four awake, four sleep by turns. When they sleep,
they sleep for eons. The only time the Gods
are vulnerable is when the sleepers awake. Knowing this, the Ruler of the Wasteland, ambitious to become a God by destroying Gods, watches and waits, marshalling troops for war.So it is that the coming of the Dreamers passes unnoticed in the Wasteland. But the world is soon out of kilter,it is being dreamed, and the awakening of Gods is no simple transition. The sleeping Gods are stirring.
When they awake the battle will begin.
There will be trickery and deception.
Tribes of humans, creatures of the deep, the sea itself and the earth, the weather and the divinities, all will play their part in the epic struggle against the Ruler of the Wasteland.
'The Elder Gods' is a stand alone novel of mythological proportions, and it is also
the first in a new and eagerly anticipated
series of four books by bestselling authors David and Leigh Eddings. It is a magical,action-packed,totally engaging and characterful novel on the grandest scale.

Age-acquired but minimal, superficial scoring/ indent to either panel of dw/dj,but without penetration to boards beneath.Top+fore-edges generally bright and clean without foxing/ spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - near pristine - one small smudge to fore-edge of pp132 - but no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips.Publisher's bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,original plain navy blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked fluorescent silver gilt-lettered spine/ backstrip, and immaculate plain navy blue endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,1-429pp [paginated] includes a Preface,23 sections with either 1,2 or 3 chapters individually and an Epilogue; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,2 single-page b/w illustrated maps of The Trogite Empire, and Tonthakan,Matakan,Atazakan and The Wasteland respectively, individual b/w illustrated section separator pages, and to the rear 10pp blanks.
Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its age.It is only the minimal faults described that prevents a slightly overall higher grading. Despite them,it really is still an exceptional example for its cleanliness and brightness.
The attacks of the dreadful insect queen known as the Vlagh have been repelled in three of the Elder Gods' realms. Now,only the land ruled by the Goddess Aracia remains for the Vlagh to send her hordes to attack.
But while the Gods, their younger avatars and their human comrades have emerged victorious from all previous encounters, this time the Goddess herself may be their greatest foe - she craves worship and hates the idea of being replaced by a younger God when her time comes to an end. . . and that time is approaching fast. Volcanoes and floods, blue fire and fields of false gold, nothing has stopped the Vlaghs from making new and improved creatures of the Wasteland that are too canny for the old tricks and pose an even bigger threat. With the Misty Lady controlling the Dreamers and the Aracia out of control, the fate of the Land of Dhrall has never before been in such peril. This delightful book was one of the first
volumes that Willy Pogany illustrated for
Harrap and was first published in 1908.It
is a collection of some of our best-known and most well-loved poetry with poems from
R.L.Stevenson, Charles Kingsley,E.Nesbit,

Willy Pogany was born in Hungary in 1882.
After spending some time in Paris he came to London in 1906.He illustrated many books for Harrap including his most well-known work,Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. His first book for Harrap though, was this one, which was an immediate success.Up until August 1914 he contributed a major book to the Harrap list every year including The Ancient Mariner, Tannhauser, Lohengrin, Parsiful and Gulliver's Travels. In 1914 when WWI started he had to leave England because he was not a British citizen and went to New York.In America he continued to illustrate books as well as designing scenery and costumes for the New York Metropolitan Opera and murals for many public buildings. He also spent some time in Hollywood making films and painting portraits of stars. He died in 1956.

Paperbacks usually follow on from a HB edn,but can be published at the same time as the HB edn, but paperback/softback Originals are published prior to any other format and in some cases,be the only edition, either in that publisher's country or in some cases, worldwide.] Bright, crisp,clean,glossy,wrap-around,pale green card covers with superimposed Ian Curtis's b/w portrait photograph (from Rainbow Theatre, London,4th April,1980) with white lettering, spine/backstrip with black+orange lettering, rear cover with 4 b/w thumbnail individual male portrait photographs and b/w lettering. Negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present. Some inevitable but superficial scoring/indents to either cover - ubiquitous with passage of time and with card covers too - but no penetration through the covers.Front lower,fore-edge corner with minor diagonal corner tip crease and spine/backstrip's vertical edges and foot of same, with some miniscule rubbing with miniscule colour loss - reads worse than actually is!! Top+fore-edges bright and clean - neither aged/toned nor foxed/spotted - blemish free; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - virtually pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips - possibly unread, other than my own collation.UK,slim Qrto s/back,wraps,illustrated 1st edn,5-96pp [paginated] includes an author Foreword,3 chapters/sections - Joy Division, The Years of Independence and The Interregnum, and an Epilogue,The New Order and Discography; profuse contemporary b/w biographical photographs interspersed throughout the text and the book; plus [unpaginated] half-title and Curtis's b/w portrait photographic illustrated title page and contents list/table.
This is the true 1st edn, there was a much more common 2nd edn in 1988,this being the more sought after and the more elusive and scarcer of the two edns.
Visually, the overall appearance is exceptional for a book of it's age and nature - an ephemeral softback, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the minimal, exterior faults described that prevent a higher grading. Despite them,it really is still an exceptional copy for brightness and cleanliness.
Joy Division were an English rock band formed in Salford in 1976 and active until 1980.The group consisted of vocalist Ian Curtis, guitarist /keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris.Sumner and Hook formed the band after attending a June 1976 Sex Pistols concert.
Sumner,Hook and Morris didn't carry on as Joy Division out of respect of an agrreement they had made between themselves not to continue under the Joy Division name should any one member leave - for any reason - long before Curtis died.He died by suicide on the eve of what would have been the band's first North American tour in May 1980,aged 23.
New Order,an English rock band formed in 1980 by vocalist and guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris. The members regrouped after the demise of their previous band Joy Division due to the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. They were joined by Gillian Gilbert on keyboards later that year.
New Order's integration of post-punk with electronic and dance music made them one of the most acclaimed and influential bands of the 1980s.Active periods included these 1980-93, 1998-2007 and 2011 to present.

The Rolling Stone Files forms the ultimate tribute to this iconoclastic Irish band by collecting together a seminal compendium of interviews, narrative pieces, album reviews, performance critiques and general
information and opinion culled from the pages of Rolling Stone, the US magazine that virtually founded rock reporting. The book also includes an exhaustive discography, tourography, chart positions and index.
The story of U2 is a dramatic one,and nowhere is that more apparent than in the pages of Rolling Stone magazine, which has
covered the band since its inception.
Readers will rediscover the band's roots as an earnest group with a peace mission in early articles and album reviews, and will marvel over the abrupt transformation
into "Mcphisto" - the degenerate, demonic alter ego that Bono has assumed for U2's recent outrageously successful tour,
Zooropa.Part of the uniqueness of this volume is the diversity of opinion found throughout the interviews and articles, allowing the reader a much broader perspective than a traditional biography could provide.

its inception.Readers will rediscover the band's roots as an earnest group with a peace mission in early articles and album reviews, and will marvel over the abrupt transformation into "Mcphisto" - the degenerate, demonic alter ego that Bono has assumed for U2's recent outrageously successful tour,Zooropa.
Part of the uniqueness of this volume is the diversity of opinion found throughout the interviews and articles, allowing the reader a much broader perspective than a traditional biography could provide.

In the summer of 1894 Oscar Wilde spent eight weeks in Worthing, and it was during this family holiday that he wrote his masterpiece,'The Importance of Being Earnest.'
The Worthing holiday was a microcosm od Wilde's turbulent life during the three years between his falling in love with Lord Alfred Douglas in 1892 and his imprisonment in 1895.
Constance Wilde, lonely and depressed, became emotionally involved with her husband's publisher,to whom she wrote a love letter on the day he visited the Wildes in Worthing.
Meanwhile Wilde was spending much of his time with the feckless and demanding Douglas, and with three teenage boys he took out sailing, swimming and fishing.
One of these boys was Alphonse Conway, with whom Wilde had a sexual relationship, and about whom he was to be questioned at length and to damaging effect in court six months later when he sued Douglas's father, the Marquess of Queensberry, for libel.
This book tells for the first time the full story of the Worthing summer, set in the context of the three years of Wilde's life before his downfall. In the final chapter the author reassesses the trials,
offering fresh insights into Wilde's
attitude to the boys and young men with whom he had sexual relations.
There are fifty-six illustrations, over thirty of which are photographs of Worthing as it was in Wilde's time, and three contemporary maps of the town.
The first 16 pages of the illustrations consist of portraits of the main protagonists in the Oscar Wilde story; two pages from letters; and images of buildings, locations and events closely associated with the summer of 1894.
The buildings include the only four
buildings in Worthing that we know Wilde spent time inside - the Haven; the Marine Hotel; the Assembly Rooms; and the pavilion at the sea end of the pier.None of these buildings survive.
Most of the photographs in the second section date from within a dozen years or so of Oscar Wilde's visit in 1894,and, except where noted, all show the town just as he knew it.The photographs are arranged
in a strict geographical sequence,
starting at the Esplanade at the eastern end of Worthing, and proceeding along Brighton Road and Warwick Street; down South Street to the pier; and then a few hundred yards west along the seafront.
The three maps of 1896 are reproduced to help readers of this book - especially those that visit modern Worthing - to identify the locations of Wilde's time.
