The oldest surviving photograph of a sea-going ship was taken towards the end of 1884 in Bristol.Since then, many amateur and professional photographers have captured images of ships in and around this famous port.'Images of MARITIME BRISTOL' is the first comprehensive selection of historic and modern photographs dedicated to this theme. Most of the photographs are from the Industrial & Maritime collections of Bristol City Museums & Art Gallery,a wide selection of whose fine images, supplemented from the archives of the regional newspaper, the Bristol Evening Post, builds into a superb evocation of the port's history over the 150 years that the camera has been with us. Early views capture the drama of sailing vessels, wrecked in the dangerous river that gave access to the old port.Ships under construction in local yards and going about their business in and around one of Britain's best loved ports illustrate the transition from sail to steam, timber to rivetted iron and more recently,to motorised vessels of welded steel. Work-a-day images from the Museum's Port of Bristol Authority Collection present a less romantic but realistic view of maritime Bristol in the changing times of the twentieth century. The heroic scale of the port facilities built to keep Bristol active as a major British port into the twenty-first century are depicted in some remarkable pictures by modern professional photographers.Paul Elken, having lived and worked in Bristol since 1969 he is recognised now as an acknowledged expert on the history of the city's industries, transport and its port and shipping in particular. He had long cherished an ambition to publish a wide-ranging selection of the photographs illustrating the port of Bristol from the extensive archives of the City Museum & Art Gallery (where he works as the Senior Curator of Humanities). This book realises that ambition. He was responsible in 1978 for establishing the acclaimed Industrial Museum and takes great pride in having learned to drive and fire its powerful steam locomotives 'Henbury' and 'Portbury'.Both engines were built in Bristol and worked the port's extensive railway network at Avonmouth Docks until preserved by the City Museum in the early 1960's.They are now used to give rides to the public on the Bristol Harbour Railway. A title from the Breedon's 'Images of. . .' seres of British cities and towns. Since April 2013,again in this year too, the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too! This is a powerful book about the resistance of the Jews in Europe during the Second World War and the activities of a handful of the survivors of concentration camps who, after 1945,determined to avenge some of the millions of their dead bretheren. Michael Elkins writes about the ghettos that were set up throughout Eastern Europe and how, one by one, they were destroyed but not before the Jews had fought to their last one and with great heroism. He writes about the heroes of the concentration camps, the few extraordinarily courageous men and women who dared to make a personal stand against the Germans, and who had the strength and fortitude to incite their companions to revolt. In the first few months of 1945,fifty men and women, still imbued with the fighting spirit, formed a secret orgnisation which came to be known as DIN meaning 'judgement' in Hebrew. They were determined that the Nazis should know some of the pain, humiliation and torture that they had suffered. Many of the most powerful Nazis died at their hands and then they worked out the most daring plan of all - a scheme to poison the water supply to a quarter of a million German homes. 'Forged in Fury' is a remarkable work, written in white-hot anger about the most abominable evil ever known to mankind. It is an unforgettable book which will take its place among the best work available on the Second World War. The defeat of the Spanish Armada four hundred years ago (1987) was one of the important landmarks of history and helped to shape the world we live in today. It created a rich crop of legends and its mark can be found still in places all over the British Isles.A journey in search of the sites, relics and remains which tell the story of the defeat of the Spanish Armada 400 years ago. This book reconstructs the story by taking the reader on an Armada Trail round the coastline and to many places inland. Where was the Armada sighted? From which clifftops could you have seen the fighting? Did Drake really play bowls and if so where? How did they operate the nationwide network of warning beacons? Is it true that Queen Elizabeth addressed her troops at Tilbury? Where can you find the Captain of the London militia in his tent and the barn they kept the prisoners in? Were there really hoards of Spanish gold in the wrecked ships and is there any left to see? Which street is said to be haunted by an Armada ghost? These are just some of the fascinating questions the author answers. It is a book for those who enjoy expeditions with a point of interest, either by car or combined with a walk. Imprint: LONDON.CONSTABLE & COMPANY LTD.,1995.

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE+/FINE+.Owner inked name+date to ink printed ex-libris stamp to title page and no price-clip to dw/dj - absence of publisher's price - usually indicates an export edition and generally believed to precede UK trade issue/distribution.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy laminated, blue monochrome pictorial illustrated dw/dj - (detail from Boadicea Haranguing The Iceni by H.C. Selous) with yellow+white lettering to front and spine; with negligible shelf-wear or creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Top edges with minimal sporadic foxing/spotting but still bright,fore- edges bright and cleaner without foxing/ spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread - apart from my own collation.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's original plain black cloth bds with bright, crisp, stamped silver gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white eps.UK,8vo HB+dw/ dj,1st edn,11-288pp [paginated] includes an introduction,10 chapters and an epilogue,12pp b/w photographs in 1 block, between pp160/61,acknowledgements,a bibliography and an index, plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, separate, individual contents+illustrations lists/tables,and epigrams (2).An uncommon UK 1st edn and in exceptional condition. The role of women in ancient Celtic society has become a contemporary battleground.Feminists have seen Celtic women as role models in their fight against patriarchal consciousness and in he sexual political struggle of today. Their opponents maintain that the idea of ancient sexual liberation and equality is a nonsense. Peter Beresford Ellis brings sanity into this furious debate,by doing what he does best - examining the evidence in a scholarly and balanced manner.Although Boudicca (Boadicea) is often cited as the most powerful historical Celtic female figure, who led southern Britain in insurrection against the Romans, the author shows that she was by means unique. He examines the concepts of the 'Mother Goddess' origins of the Celts and the pantheon of Celtic female deities. He looks at the personalities of female figures in mythology, from Etain and Emer,Macha and Medb,Rhiannon and Gwenhwyvar (Guinevere) - together with a whle range of characters from powerful women, weak women, serious women, capricious women, vengeful women and ambitious women. He does not neglect the historical personalities and,in one of the most fascinating sections of the book, examines the position of women under the native Celtic law systems. He analyses the contention that Christianity destroyed the matri-centred Celtic society and degenerated the role of women, charting their role in the early Celtic Church. There is also a chapter on Celtic 'witches' as well as native erotic poetry. Highly readable, controversial, filled with new material but, above all, scholarly and thought-provoking,this is an important volume in both Celtic and feminist literature. Historian and novelist,Peter Beresford Ellis is recognised as a leading authority on Celtic studies. He is the author of several highly regarded works on Celtic history and culture, many of which have been published by Constable (UK).Titles include 'The Celtic Empire' (1990),'A Dictionary of Celtic Mythology' (1992), 'Celt and Saxon' (1993) and 'The Druids' (1994). Life is as big as the world and as small as the honey bee.As well as giving mankind both sweetness and light - from honey and candle wax - the bee does nothing less than keep us alive by pollinating trees and many of the plants that we eat. In 'Sweetness and Light',Hattie Ellis tells the story of this amazing insect and its mysterious world, exploring how bees have flown into our lives throughout history, inspiring and obsessing writers, artists, scientists and architects, and entering the languages and customs of people everywhere. She describes the complex politics of the hive; how bees communicate by such manoeuvres as the 'waggle dance'; and how they make flights equivalent to three circuits of the globe to produce a pound of honey, each bee yielding less than half a teaspoonful in its lifetime. She tells of bees' collective power, the savage energy of the killer African bees swarming across America, and the lethal mechanics of their sting; and she examines issues at the forefront of scientific research, such as how best to harness honey's medicinal qualities. Travelling from heather moorland to inner city,Hattie talks to extraordinary beekeepers from New York to New Zealand about how honey, the ultimate global/local food,is produced and use today. In a world under pressure, can its miraculous purity survive pollution and the monoculture of the modern countryside? In this beautiful written book,Hattie Ellis shows us how the mysteries of bees and honey remain a talisman for all that is curious, fascinating, delightful and perilous about the natural world and our place within it. Who were the Druids? The Romans viewed them as occult priests Indulging in human sacrifice and forecasting the future from human entrails. Some say they were amiable sorcerers.Others portray them as the intelligensia of ancient Celtic society. In this book,Peter Beresford Ellis sifts through the evidence, and, with reference to the latest archaeological findings and the use of etymoLogy,he provides the reader with the first authentic account of who and what they were. The Druids emerge as the intellectual caste of ancient Celtic society. They were the doctors, the lawyers, the ambassadors, the advisers to kings.Ellis describes the special Druidic training, their philosophy, their belief in auguries, and their intriguing origins. The Roman description of the Druids,he shows, was the bellicose propaganda of an empire anxious to rob them of their power in the Celtic territories. He shows that the current 'New Age' image of them as benevolent wizards comes from a woefully inadequate interpretation of the facts. This highly readable book will be the standard work on the Druids for years to come. It really is an exceptional, exemplary example for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of detracting faults.                                 When archaeologist Neil Watson unearths a long-buried mechanical figure in a Dartmoor field, he is determined to discover the truth behind the bizarre find.                              Soon, however, the sleepy village becomes the focus of press attention for another reason when two people with no apparent connection to each other are found shot dead in nearby Manor Field, seemingly victims of an execution-style double murder.                                          DI Wesley Peterson is called in to investigate, but the two murders aren't his only problem. The daughter of a local MP has gone missing and the pressure is on to find her, especially when it's revealed that she has a connection to one of the murder victims. And Wesley's own life is thrown into turmoil when a woman he helped on a previous investigation finds herself subjected to a campaign of terror . . . Is there a link between the double murder and the accidental death of a young history student in Manor Field twenty years ago? And just what is the true identity of the Mechanical Devil? Author's 22nd 'Wesley Peterson' mystery from captivating crime star Kate Ellis.                Please contact seller, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!          N.B. In June 1916 Philip Brocklesby,a young second lieutenant just arrived in Boulogne on his way to the battle of the Somme, slipped away from his regiment to see his brother who had beenimprisonred nearby.Yet it wasn't the enemy who were holding Bert, but the British Army.Bert, along with thirty four oher passionately committed conscientious objectors, had been court-martialled for refusing to fight. The brothers did not meet but both knew it could be for the last time: Philip faced death in the trenches,Bert before a firing squad. Through the pognant story of the Brocklesby family,Will Ellsworth-Jones explores the history of conscientious objection in World War 1,charting the ordeal of men who stood firm in the face of public scorn, official condemnation and the threat of execution. This powerful account also assesses the men's lasting legacy - an enhanced freedom to voice unpopular beliefs and to challenge those who decide to take a country to war.It always requires courage to go into battle; this book - vivid with personal detail from unpublished letters, diaries, memoirs and interviews - recounts one of those moments in history when it took just as much courage to say: 'we will not fight'. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! One day in 1965 the five-year-old Robert Elms fell in love with clothes. His brother had just returned to the family's Burnt Oak home in a new suit he'd picked up from a tailor in Kilburn.Otis Redding was playing in the front room. This, as his mum would say,was 'all the go',whatever that meant. This,Elms realized, was what you grew up for. Fast-forward seventeen years, through a slideshow of looks - mod, skinhead, suedehead,Bowie boy, punk - and Elms finds himself at the epicentre of hip eighties London. As lead writer for the new style bible, the Face, his pronouncements - on what to wear and what not to wear, what to listen to and how to achieve cool, dictated youth taste to the post-punk generation. In an era that saw sytle become a mainstream preoccupation,Robert Elms became, almost inadvertently, high priest of a new cult. Was selvedge stitching really essential? (Yes.) Was the ripped-trouser look really a political statement?(Probably not.) Was Cowboy chic really chic at all? When the sartorial excess of youth fashion came to full fruition amid the pantomime outfits of the Blitz Club,Elms was in his element. And then it all changed. This is the story of a life's obsession. From Ben Sherman shirts to boxtop loafers, from bondage trousers to Comme de Garcons, Elms has been there, bought it and worn it.It's about why you'd rather not go out at all than go out in the wrong sort of brogues, and why you just had to have a Budgie Jacket to cut it in the playground in 1970.It is ultimately a hilarious, passionate social history of London street fashion from the Teddy Boys and rude boys battling it out in the 50's Notting Hill of Elms's childhood until it all ended with the rise of Acid House.A fond memoir of working class lads in tumultuous times and leary schmutter. To anyone interested in football quiz games it is probably a well-known fact that the two largest cities never to have boasted a First Division football club are Plymouth and Hull. The fact that Hull City have never played in Division One is perhaps the most surprising, for even though the Tigers of Boothferry Park have had to contend with a hotbed of Rugby League, support for the City club always is there when the Tigers are doing well. It is also surprising that there has never before been a truly definitive history published on Hull City FC.Now,long-time Hull supporter and statistician, Chris Elton, has rectified that with this book, a volume which will answer just about any question one could ask on the Tiger's story. There is a complete record of every first-team competitive game - results, scorers, line-ups and attendances - as well as a narrative history of the club and its grounds, illustrated biographies of over 100 Tiger's stars down the years and every manager.Matches to Remember, additional historical and statistical features coupled with hundreds of photographs complete a superb book about one of the Football League's most enduring clubs.A very scarce, collectable copy - subscribers list only goes up to No 341, the first 3 copies being presentation copies to the football club, the Football League and the Football Association. The story of a day in the life of a household dog,as humorously told by the dog.The dog's day and story starts at 7am continuing up to "lights out" at 10:15pm, as told by the lively Airedale Terrier. He thwarts a burglar, gets a bath, wrestles a rug, upsets a canary, gets a bone from the kitchen, etc. A truly charming little book. Few people can fail to be charmed, and cheered, by Cecil Aldin's mischievious dogs or puppies. They were among the stars of a series of eagerly-awaited books issued each year in time for Christmas in the decade before the 1914-18 war and whose escapades delighted a generation of children. Now,in a special edition, they join the other reissued Aldin classics 'A Dog Day' and 'Sleeping Partners'. Aldin's sense of fun shines from every line.He based his drawings on real puppies, real dogs,so that they never became mere caricatures.Anyone who knows dogs will feel a sense of affinity with Aldin's depiction of these canine scallywags, portrayed by the finest of all dog illustrators. Cecil Charles Windsor Aldin (1870-1935) Worked as Cecil Aldin.Born in Slough, Berkshire, son of a successful speculative builder. After a month in the studio of the 'classical-aesthetic' painter Albert Moore,he studied animal anatomy at the South Kensington School of Art,and later worked under the animal painter Frank Calderon.[See my book ID rja449913 - ANIMAL PAINTING & ANATOMY [The New Art Library 2nd Series - Vol XVIII]. Aldin achieved early success as a comic illustrator, contributing to numerous periodicals during the 1890s,and designing posters (for Cadburys,in particular). He lived in Chelsea, then at Bedford Park, where a flourishing artists' colony included his friends Dudley Hardy and Lance Thackeray, then moved to Henley-on- Thames where he became Master of Foxhounds in 1914.He retired to Mallorca in 1930. Sharing the values and aspirations of a wide audience,he achieved immense popularity, evoking the English dream of Life in the Country in a relaxed and easy graphic style. As well as hunting scenes (in which he largely avoided the suggestion of mud and raw weather so insistently present in the work of his sporting artist contemporary G.D. Armour),he specialised in delicately shaded drawings of country inns,in cheerful olde worlde scenes and canine subjects, particularly dog-portraits,the best of which are the humorous ones.In these,it was said,he 'captured the very soul of a dog'. Roy Heron,Aldin's biographer,is a former Fleet Street editor. His books include 'Cecil Aldin,The Story of a Sporting Artist'; 'The Sporting Art of Cecil Aldin' and,in France,'Cecil Aldin et les chiens'. It really is an exceptional copy for its cleanliness and brightness. The choice of Plymouth as a naval base was largely due to Sir Francis Drake whose home port was Plymouth and also Sir John Hawkins in the 1500s. During trhe reight of King Charles I,Saltash, Cornwall had been chosen for a site of a Government Dock in 1625,but had to be abandoned after strong objections against a Naval Base on their sacred soil, which would destroy their fishing industry and livelihoods. Further areas were considered such as the Hamoze, Cattewater and even Dartmouth and estimates were sent to the Admiralty in 1689.A stone dock proposal was accepted and built on the Hamoze, begining on 2nd September,1691.By the end of 1692 the wet basin and the dry dock had beencompleted and constructed. The Navy rented the land used called POINT FORWARD,for an annual fee of £100 for the first seven years, and the work force totalled 74 menThis was to be the beginning of the largest Naval Dockyard in Europe, over a period of 300 years. It really is an exceptional copy for its cleanliness and brightness. The years between 1900 and 1950 saw the change from Wooden Wallers to Dreadnoughts and Battleships used in both World Wars. The mighty force of the Big Guns was introduced and with these controlled Britain's seas. The Navy still required improvements and, after may frustrating trials, developed the Flat Tops,to take aircraft out to sea for reconnaisance and bombing runs. Throughout this time the Dockards were also building ships and Devonport produced many famous names and various types from submarines to aircraft carrier.Naturally, officers and men had to be retrained to man the greatly-improved Navy, and many "stone warships" were built as Training Schools. The West Country continued to play an important role in the development of the Navy. The author has included in this volume the approaches to the River Tamar, and additional branches of the Service, i.e. Royal Marines, WRNS, Fleet Air Arm and Shore Training Schools. Despite it,it really is an exceptional copy for its cleanliness, brightness and almost fault-free presentation. Michael English (b. 5th September,1941 – d. 25th September 2009) was a British artist known for poster designs he created in the 1960s for musicians such as Jimi Hendrix in collaboration with Nigel Waymouth and the design company they established, Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, and later for several series of hyper realist paintings in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1962 he enolled at Ealing College of Art, where he took Roy Ascott's radical Groundcourse which had a major impact on his thinking. His work included commissioned paintings for both private individuals and public organisations, advertising art for companies such as Porsche and stamp series for the Royal Mail such as the 'British Buses' or 'British Motorcycles'. His career was launched in London during 1966, when he began to work with Nigel Waymouth, who owned the shop Granny Takes a Trip in the King's Road, which was a burgeoning counter-culture and bohemian centre of Swinging London. English was hired by Waymouth to create a mural for the shop, which was rapidly gaining international cult status. English incorporated "fairground murals, vernacular imagery and hand-crafted Victorian letter forms" into the mural, and during the same period,he also completed a mural for the Cale Street shop Hung On You in the trendy Chelsea area, owned by Michael Rainey. During this period he produced what he considered his 'best poster' for the underground club UFO established by John Hopkins,co-founder of the International Times. He contributed artwork, including two covers (issues 4 and 13) for the radical 'OZ' magazine as part of Hapshash,a collaboration which continued for two years. Throughout this time,he produced posters for leading performers such as Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix. He also created posters for the 1968 Liverpool Love Festival, and Love Me Film Productions. Michael English has been credited with creating "an English form of psychedelic poster art". English's works used contemporary Op Art techniques to create a visually jarring effect for the viewer, and had a bold, carnivalesque style similar to Pop Art. He also used evocative references to the decadent spirit of the 1890s 'Art Nouveau' influences, such as Alphonse Mucha's posters, and the works of Aubrey Beardsley. In the 1970s,English moved away from psychedelic imagery towards Hyper Realist work, employing airbrush techniques. He produced several different series of paintings,'The Food Paintings' (1969– 70),including 'Fried Egg' and 'Ketchup', The Rubbish Posters (1970),with the iconic 'Coke',an airbrush image of a used Coca-Cola bottle cap,and the Strikes Water Prints (1971) with images such as Ball Strikes Water. English's posters from this period sold in the millions. English also experimented with environmentalist happenings and oil lamp projections. In the mid to late 1970s and the 1980s he focused more keenly on two seemingly contrasting themes, the 'Machine Paintings',which are highly detailed sections of trains, planes and trucks and the 'Nature Paintings',which provided close-up fragments of nature images such as ivy leaves often juxtaposed with hard man-made surfaces. His interest in both these themes continued to play a major part in his subsequent career resulting in several large scale paintings. It really is an exceptional copy for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of detracting faults. In this book, the author weaves a beguiling biographical mantle around this often dauting colossus, interleaving her narrative with examples of his legendary wit, using a wealth of anecdotes from those who knew him, as well as quaotations from his speeches and writings. In doing so, she shows Churchill to have been not merely a great war captain and an intensely brave, able and inspiring leader, but also a man of great compassion and overwhelming humanity. His life was not only long but it was full and varied - full of freinds, and of enemies; full of action and creativity, of argument and ruthlessness. Exuberant and spoiled, childish and childlike, kind and cruel, enquiring but pig-headed, hardworking and generous but conceited and determined to be centre-stage. Churchhill was all of these things.              Remembered as a political leader, as a wartime strategist, and as the last of the great public orators, his fame also rests upon his many books, notably his histories. Above all, though, he is remembered as the greatest orator of his day, the greatest leader of the Second World War, the greatest statesman of his age, and the greatest Englishman of the twentieth century, perhaps of all time. Nearly forty years after his death, it remains true that the free world owes an immeasurable debt to Sir Winston Churchill. See also my book ID rja1405 'The People's England', another title by this author. Spectacular gold pieces made by a forgotten civilization, the Taironas, appeared in lage numbers in Colombia in the 1970s.Sixteenth-century chronicles spoke of their ceremonial cities, and eventually tomb robbers led the way to the Lost City of the Taironas in dense mountain jumgle.Alan Ereira went there, and made contact with their communities still functioning high on an isolated mountain. Here an ancient priesthood still rules,in cities more than a thousand years old. They have preserved the culture and philosophy of a culture lost everywhere else: the civilization of the Chibchas, the people of El Dorado. After centuries of deliberate isolation, these people, the Kogi, have decided that the time has come to speak to us.They call themselves The Elder Brothers of the human race, and are convinced that our ignorance and greed will destroy the balance of life on Earth in the next few years. They believe that the only hope is for us to change our ways, and so they have set out to teach us what they know about the balance between mankind, nature and the spiritual world. This book is their warning and their message. It makes sense of much that was not known or understood of the pre-Columbian civilizations of America. And it is a desperate attempt to make us understand the consequences of our own way of living. THE PEOPLE'S ENGLAND.

Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn. FINE/FINE. No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Light creasing dw/dj edges - shelf-wear? 8vo,285pp includes profuse b/w illus, plates and photographs, references, sources and index. What was life like a hundred and fifty years ago as a deckhand on a collier brig? What did a Victorian maid-of-all-work think of her drudgery? How did their lives differ from those of their parents, and their children, and how did these changes affect their beliefs and values? Using a completely new approach to the history of England,Ereira traces the experience of specific groups of working people from the advent of the enclosures to the present day.By retracing broadly similar periods from these different perspectives, the reader is taken through the barrier of generalisations such as 'the working class' and 'the common people' into the living experience of change. The stories put names and faces to people who are usually buried in the statistics of economic historians or the sweeping statements of conventional social history, but from them emerges a broad picture of the roots of political change.Ereira has drawn his material from many sources: local records, journals, and autobiographies, and interviews with people who can document social change from their own recollections. He presents, through the eyes of labourers, servants, soldiers, factory hands, seamen, immigrants, shopkeepers and miners,an exciting and challenging new view of England's past.
