Part imperious royal figure, part femme du monde,Princess Margaret remains (then 1997) the most interesting member of the British royal family. For many years second
in line to the throne, she was born with every possible advantage - beauty, vivacity, intelligence, wealth and position. Yet her nature,as one intimate has put it, 'was to make everything go wrong'.She has been described as tragic, unresolved,a royal maverick,a woman of conflict,a princess without a cause. Her private life has been racked by scandal; it has been a catalogue of unhappy, unfulfilled and unsuitable relationships.
Her many good points have been submerged in an avalanche of criticism.Dauntingly royal yet defiantly unorthodox,Princess Margaret has spent the greater part of her
life torn between meeting standards of the
monarchy and flouting its long-established
conventions. Here is the first detailed, in-depth study of this controversial figure, written by a respected royal biographer.Theo Aronson is uniquely qualified to tell the Princess's story - from her private and public life.In the course of his writing career,he has interviewed, not only Princess Margaret herself, but also the Queen Mother,Prince
Charles,Princess Alice,Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Alice,Countess of Athlone. He has also spoken to members of the various royal households. For this study he has been helped by many who knew the Princess and has drawn on several new and unfamiliar sources. The result is a fresh, frank and highly entertaining account of an always colourful life.
Aronson's authoritative biography does justice to a complex woman - the first modern princess to lead her troubled private life in the glare of world publicity.

In 1972 the Imperial War Museum set about the momentous task of tracing ordinary veterans and survivors of the First World War and interviewing them in detail about their experiences.
The Imperial War Museum Sound Archive, which includes first-hand experiences of British, French,German,American,Canadian and Anzac soldiers has since grown to be the most important of its kind in the world and provides a vivid and compelling account of day-to-day life during one of the most harrowing periods of modern history.
These tapes, many of which have rested unheard of for decades, contain the forgotten voices of a generation no longer with us.In the past, historians have only used a fraction of the material.
Now,thirty years on,after hundreds of hours in the archive and unlimited access to the complete WW1 tapes, acclaimed author Max Arthur and his researchers have created this remarkable, landmark history of the First World War - told in the words of the ordinary men and women who experienced it first hand.

After the fall of France in May 1940, Hitler set his sights on the invasion of Britain.Within weeks he had a vast fleet ranged along the French coast. But his biggest obstacle was the small and under-resourced Royal Air Force - Hitler knew he must gain control of the skies if his invasion fleet was to stand a chance of crossing successfully.
And so began the Battle of Britain: thirteen terrifying weeks which saw 2,500 young RAF pilots pitted against the larger and more experienced German forces of the Luftwaffe, high above the English Channel.
Despite being vastly outnumbered,by October the multiple daily sorties and dogfights were over.'The Few' had succeeded and though the Luftwaffe continued to attack it was never again in such vast numbers.
Hitler's invasion would not now take place. This was his first major defeat.
More than a fifth of the British and Allied pilots died during the Battle of Britain.Today (then 2010) the remaining veterans are all in their late eighties and nineties.
Acclaimed oral historian Max Arthur has interviewed many veterans and drawn on sound archives and written testimonies of that short but hugely significant battle. In their own words, their memories undimmed by the passage of time, they tell of their experiences.
Their stories are as riveting,as vivid and as poignant as they were seventy years ago.

Max Arthur's compilation of memories from
the turn of the century recaptures the day-to-day lives of people living through a fascinating period of transformation and landmark events. Arthur, bestselling author of the hugely popular 'Forgotten Voices of the Great War' - see my book ID rja449013 for an example - and 'Forgotten Voices of the Second World War',has assembled hundreds of excerpts from private and public archives of Britain.
Miners, millworkers, postmen, actresses, soldiers, bricklayers, shipbuilders, farm hands, seamstresses, footballers, and children working hard both in the factory and the schoolroom - all give rich and moving testimony of their day-to-day lives.
The extraordinary first decade of the 20thC was fuelled by a relentless sense of progress.
Scientific research brought new inventions - the first manned flights, public transport, and the noisy new motor car - and great strides in the battle for better health. The extremes of the upstairs-downstairs world prompted a huge upsurge in political activity and the advancement of the suffragette movement, whilst holidays and leisure time became a reality for ordinary people. The years captured in these pages are made all the more poignant by our knowledge that the First World War was imminent and this time of optimistic development, along with the lives of so many, would be brutally cut short.
'Lost Voices of the Edwardians' combines oral history and mesmerizing images, including stills from the rediscovered Mitchell and Kenyon film footage from the turn of the century. This remarkable collection gives voice to the forgotten figures that peopled the cities, factories and seasides of Edwardian Britain.

Tough,ruthless,highly adaptable,and
efficient, the Airborne Forces has established itself as one of the finest fighting forces in the world.
In 1990 it celebrates its fiftieth anniversary. Max Arthur, whose previous books on the Falklands and Northern Ireland met with widespread praise, has compiled from over 150 interviews,a fascinating history of the Airborne Forces and The Parachute Regiment, including all their major operations.
This unique chronicle is told entirely in the words of the men who fought in those operations, and of those involved closely with them.
They tell of the first experimental parachute jumps in training for the daring raids on Tragino in 1941 and on Bruneval, and their successive deployment in North Africa,Italy, Normandy,on the Rhine Crossing and, most famously,at Arnhem. In the post-war period, they were in action in Palestine,Malaya,Cyprus,Suez, Borneo and Aden. They took part in some of the fiercest fighting of the Falklands War,and their long commitment to Northern Ireland, begun in 1969,continues to this day (then 1990).
In all,Max Arthur spent over two years interviewing members of the Airborne Forces and established an extraordinary rapport with them. The result is a compelling testament of outstanding courage, endurance and defiance.'Men of the Red Beret' is one of the most remarkable collections of first-hand accounts of war ever published.

'SYMBOL OF COURAGE' is a ground-breaking history of Britain's most famous medal, the Victoria Cross, and a tribute to the extraordinary men who have won it.
The Victoria Cross can only be awarded for 'most conspicuous bravery,or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy.' It has been awarded only 1,354 times since the Crimean War,the majority of medals going to British and Commonwealth troops.
'Symbol of Courage' vividly brings the story of the medal to life. After telling of Queen Victoria's concern for her troops, and how she devised the Victoria Cross, there is a narrative history of every conflict in which the VC has been awarded - from the Crimean War to the Falklands. It also gives a complete listing of every VC holder with details of the action in which he won the medal.
Written by acclaimed military historian Max Arthur, this is a fascinating and comprehensive study that will appeal to everyone interested in the nature of courage.

1 April 1993 marks the 75th anniversary of the birth of the Royal Air Force. To commemorate it,Max Arthur has interviewed over 150 members, past and present, many of whom have never spoken before of their experiences. From their personal and often extremely moving accounts he has created a unique narrative history of the RAF, which ranges from the RFC pilot of a SE5 on the Western Front in 1918 to the first Hercules to land in Sarajevo in 1992.
The inter-war years cover the first parachute jump from the wing of a Vimy bomber, attacks on tribesmen in Iraq and on the North-West Frontier,a meeting with T.E. Lawrence and the Schneider Trophy.
Inevitably, the major part of 'There Shall Be Wings' concentrates on the Second World War.It covers the aircrews who flew against the German advance into France and in the Battle of Britain, and includes a fine account from the highest-scoring survivor of the battle. The extraordinary tenacity of Bomber Command aircrews is demonstrated, amongst others,by the man who flew a record 127 missions into enemy territory; by the Dambusters; and by a pilot who dropped SOE agents in France and brought back to London a young Francois Mitterand. The fierce battle over Malta is captured by "Laddie" Lucas, while Johnnie Johnson, the highest scoring ace, tells of his time with Douglas Bader.
All four surviving RAF holders of the VC (Victoria Cross) contribute their remarkable individual stories.
Finally, the post-war years cover the jet-age, combat in Korea, the Radfan, the Falklands and the Gulf as well as the humanitarian missions flown by Hercules and Chinooks.
'There Shall Be Wings' is a wide-ranging, memorable tribute to the skill, courage, spirit and irrepressible humour of those who have served in the RAF during the last 75 years.

Visually, the external appearance is still exceptional, and particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it’s 30 year-old age. It is only the minimal faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall.Despite that,it really is still an exemplary example for it’s lack of other age-acquired detracting faults usually encountered in an item of this age.
The Perkin Warbeck Conspiracy,1491-1499 focuses on the persona of Perkin Warbeck and the men who organized his conspiracy. For over five hundred years Warbeck's true identity has been the subject of speculation and debate. In this book Dr. Arthurson does not dwell on futile speculation, but concentrates instead on what Warbeck's function was. This,he argues, was to provide a mechanism whereby Edward,Earl of Warwick, could be brought to the throne of England replacing Henry VII as king.
Illustrated with a wealth of contemporary portraits, paintings, engravings and documents, and with full Notes, genealogical tables and maps; this book, the first in-depth study of Perkin Warbeck, will be welcomed by both the academic historian and the general reader alike. Since the dawn of aerial combat in the First World War,the heroism of the men who put their lives at risk in the air has known no bounds. Those earliest pilots were pioneers at a time when aeroplanes were in their infancy - flimsy and exposed. On early reconaissance flights, the men were vulnerable targets as they flew over enemy territory but, with the advent of the dogfight, the First World War invented the fighter pilot, the twentieth century equivalent of a duelling knight.
When war broke out in 1939,it was clear that much of the battle would be in the air and,as war progressed, air strikes became increasingly important. There were no more heroic airmen than the fighter pilots and bomber crews of WW2.In 'Heroes of the Skies',we learn of men who sacrificed their own lives in order to save their crew and others who, although injured and in extreme pain, managed to get their aircraft home rather than land them in enemy territory and risk becoming prisoners of war. These were men who woke up every day knowing this day could well be their last.
In telling the stories of the individual courage of more than eighty such men. 'Heroes of the Skies' also paints a picture of aerial combat from WW1 right through to Afghanistan, and allows us to celebrate the extraordinary feats our flying heroes.

Paddy Ashdown spent the first seventeen years of his adult life serving his country as an officer in the Royal Marine Commandos,a member of the Special Boat Service and,as he now reveals for the first time,an employee of the 'shadowy side' of the Foreign Office. He then went on to become an MP and leader of his party and the international community's High Representative in war-torn Bosnia. Now he tells the story of this extraordinarily varied, adventurous and dramatic life in a book which is continuously gripping, sometimes moving and often very, very funny - in short the very antithesis of the traditional political memoir.
He can,and does, write with authority about topics as diverse as evading water bailiffs while fishing illicitly at night (a legacy of his childhood in Northern Ireland); tracking down and destroying infiltrating Indonesian forces in the jungles of Sarawak; landing a raiding party from a submerged submarine; the difficulties of learning Chinese (he holds the equivalent of a first-class degree in Chinese, just one of his six languages); winning an apparently 'hopeless' parliamentary seat; negotiating with Tony Blair and the tragedies of a country wracked by civil war.
He is deadly serious when writing about the things that matter to him - his family, his country, his political beliefs, the Bosnian people whose cause he adopted when it was deeply unpopular to do so - but he also has a refreshing gift for seeing the funny side of most situations and illustrates it with self-deprecating wit and a wealth of anecdote. This is the self- portrait of a man who has lived life to the full and whose autobiography would be fascinating even if he had never set foot in the Palace of Westminster.

By the summer of 1941 Erwin Rommel was Hitler's favourite general.Sent to North Africa to halt the British advance into Libya,he not only stopped the British offensive but drove them back to their Egyptian base.He seemed to be unbeatable on the battlefield,so the British planned to kill him.On the eve of the next British offensive,Operation Crusader,a specially trained commando team landed by submarine behind enemy lines.Marching deep into the desert, they attacked Rommel"s headquarters. At the same time,in its first ever combat mission, the newly created SAS parachuted sabotage teams close to the German airfields to knock out the enemy air forces on the ground.
Michael Asher reveals how these daring raids were practically impossible from the start - but the volunteer commandos and SAS men had no idea this was effectively a suicide mission.Poor planning and incompetence in high places was matched by fantastic bravery and brilliant improvisation that enabled a handful of the survivors to escape back to British lines and tell their story. From Bob 'Lucky' Laycock, the model for Evelyn Waugh's Lt.Col. Tommy Blackhouse,to the tragic Geoffrey Keyes, awarded a posthumous VC for leading the operation, Michael Asher investigates the true story of 'Operation Flipper';the plot to kill Rommel.

BRAVO TWO ZERO was the code-name of the most famous SAS operation in recent times. It was a classic British story of glorious failure and bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. The book,'Bravo Two Zero',written by patrol commander 'Andy McNab',became an international best-seller.So did another first-hand account of the affair,Chris Ryan's 'The One That Got Away.'
Three members of the patrol were killed. One,veteran sergeant Vince Phillips was blamed in both books for a succession of mistakes. As Michael Asher reveals, the stories in the two previous accounts grew considerably in the telling.Their stories of taking out tanks with rocket launchers, mowing down hundreds of Iraqi soldiers, killing enemy sentries with just their bare hands, were never mentioned at their post-war debriefings. . .
Michael Asher went to Iraq to investigate what really happened.A fluent Arab speaker, who has lived for years among the desert peoples, his unique understanding of Arab culture enabled him to track down witnesses and participants. He re-traces the footsteps of the patrol, from the moment they touched down in the desert to their first battle with the Iraqis and the subsequent hunt and pursuit. The story he reveals is very different. There was great bravery and dedication - on both sides.
Every man in that patrol demonstrated grit and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds,in the finest traditions of the 22nd SAS Regiment. None more so than Sergeant Vince Phillips, whose body lies in san unmarked grave in the desert.

Algernon Blackwood was one of the greatest writers of supernatural fiction of the 20thC - Dion Fortune described him as 'pre-eminent among the writers of occult fiction' - yet he remains a mysterious figure. An indefatigable traveller, an undercover agent during the First World War,a Searcher for the Red Cross,he was also an extremely popular storyteller on radio and television - indeed,he appeared on the first ever television programme.
He originated the play,'The Starlight Express', was a member of the magical order of the Golden Dawn, and was acquainted with most of the literary and artistic establishment of his day from Hilaire Belloc to Arthur Machen, from Sinclair Lewis to H.G. Wells.
Blackwood revealed that all his stories were based on personal experiences or those of his close friends. This from the man whose stories take us to a lonely island in the River Danube where two travellers face the cosmic powers of the Earth in all their might; and deep into the deserts of Egypt where a lone man witnesses the spirit of the ancient past rise up like a gigantic wall of sand.H.P. Lovecraft said of him,'Of the quality of Mr Blackwood's genius there can be no dispute; for no one has even approached the skill, seriousness and minute fidelity with which he records the overtones of strangeness in ordinary things and experiences . . .'
In the 1920's,he published an autobiography. But as its title suggests - 'Episodes Before Thirty' - it covers only the period up to 1899 and it ends,'Of mystical, psychic or so-called "occult" experiences,I have purposely said nothing'.But there was much to be said.
Mike Ashley has been researching Blackwood's life for more than twenty years and has discovered a wonderfully complex character - a profound mystic,a delightful storyteller,an innocent child,a wild adventurer, and a remarkable man. Now, on the fiftieth anniversary of his death (then 2001),his full biography is available for the first time and reveals the inside story on this most mystical and magical of men.

RAF Bomber Command spearheaded the fight against Germany's armed forces and industrial heartland during the Second World War.In the space of six years no less than 389,909 sorties were flown, with a loss of more than 55,000 aircrew and nearly 11,000 aircraft.Although the targeting of specific cities is still the subject of controversy,Bomber Command's overall contribution to the Allied victory is beyond question. But how did a Command, ill-equipped at the outbreak of war, manage to transform itself into such a mighty fighting force? What role did it play when the Second World War gave way to the 'Cold War' and the nuclear age?
These questions, and many others, are answered in this, the first full history of Bomber Command. It has been meticulously researched by aviation historian Chris Ashworth who relates the story of the Command from its inception with biplanes, through the wartime days of Halifaxes, Wellingtons and Lancasters to the post-war V-bombers and its disbandment in 1968.
Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too!

When the movie Fantastic Voyage (1966) was released,Asimov had been hired to do the novelization, which he himslef was not completely satisfied with.Twenty-one years later (1987) he rewrote the story, keeping only the central concept of miniaturized scientists entering a human body; to enter a human brain so that they can retrieve memories from a comatose colleague. It is not a sequel to the film.
Albert Jonas Morrison,a 21st century neurophysicist, and otherwise an ordinary and unheroic man,is kidnapped and taken to the Soviet Union.
A major Soviet scientist,Pyotr Shapirov,is in an irreversible coma, and Morrison's special expertise could be of value. The Soviets believe that Morrison may be able to apply his controversial theories to retrieve vagrant thoughts that still may be floating in Shapirov's damaged brain and so provide clues to important work in which Shapirov was engaged. Morrison goes cold with fear because the plan calls for him to be miniaturized along with four Soviet scientists to a sub-molecular size, and introduce them into Shapirov's body and, ultimately, into his brain.

'FOUNDATION AND EARTH' develops the story that began in FOUNDATIONS EDGE,of Golan Trevize's 'treachery' and the search for the mythical origins of humanity.
This,the author's 5th FOUNDATION novel,in Asimov's popular Foundation series,opens with second thoughts.
Councilman Golan Trevize is wondering if he was right to choose a collective mind as the best possible future for humanity over the anarchy of contentious individuals, nations and planets. To test his conclusion,he decides he must know the past and goes in search of legendary Earth, all references to which have been erased from galactic libraries. The societies encountered along the way become arguing points in a book-long colloquy about man's fate, conducted by Trevize and traveling companion Bliss, who is part of the first world/mind,Gaia.

The stories that were too astounding for 'Astounding'.'Pebble In The Sky' and 'The End Of Eternity' are among the best known of Isaac Asimov's early novels. But what most readers won't know is that both were originally written for - and rejected by - the famous pulp SF magazines of the 1940s and 1950s.Along with Dr Asimov's fascinating commentary on the revisions and on his working relationships with legendary SF editors John Campbell and Horace Gold,'The Alternate Asimovs' offers the rare and delightful treat of watching a master of imagination in his workshop.

A collection of four short stories by Isaac Asimov. Contains: 'It's Such A Beautiful Day' / 'Belief' / 'Breeds There A Man?' / 'The C-Chute'. From the master of SF,enter the imagination of Isaac Asimov.
'It's Such A Beautiful Day': Nature had been forgotten in this electronic world of the future - until one day, quite by accident,a young boy strayed outdoors and discovered what was there.
'Belief': When you can't make anyone believe that you can levitate, your only course of action is to say you can't!
'Breeds There A Man?': The physicist had arrived at a theory - very interesting, but highly improbable. But something not quite human seemed to be causing a bit of trouble.
'The C-Chute': The spaceship had to be recaptured from the aliens, which meant that somebody had to be a hero. But who would that be. And why?

Who were the men and women whose names are immortalized on war memorials around the country? Where did they live, how and why did they die?
Such questions usually go unanswered. This book unravels the story of one war memorial,in the Dartmoor village of Lydford, tracing the lives of twenty-two men and one woman who made the supreme sacrifice. The result is an intimate portrait of one corner of the countryside in the twentieth century, and an extraordinary tale of the endurance and bravery of otherwise ordinary people - farmers, masons, railway workers, landowners, schoolchildren - who,but for the war
memorial,would be forgotten.
For the first time, their experiences of war are recounted in vivid detail through original documents: from the battles of the First and Second World Wars to more recent times in the Falklands and Iraq.
'War Memorial' is about the people who laid down their lives for us,and who shall not be forgotten.

Who were the men and women whose names are immortalized on war memorials around the country? Where did they live, how and why did they die?
Such questions usually go unanswered. This book unravels the story of one war memorial,in the Dartmoor village of Lydford, tracing the lives of the twenty- two men and one woman who made the supreme sacrifice. The result is an intimate portrait of one corner of the countryside in the twentieth century, and an extraordinary tale of the endurance and bravery of otherwise ordinary people - farmers, masons, railway workers, landowners, schoolchildren - who,but for the war memorial, would be forgotten.
For the first time, their experiences of war are recounted in vivid detail through original documents: from the battles of the First and Second World Wars to more recent times in the Falklands and Iraq.
'War Memorial' is about the people who laid down their lives for us,and who shall not be forgotten.

This book is the first complete survey of Chaplin's work, and includes a detailed synopsis of each and every Chaplin film, from the earliest Keystone farces up to Chaplin's latest and most sophisticated productions, with an assessment of their interest to a present-day viewer.Included are unique statistical data on the original footages and running times of Chaplin's silents, drawn from the archives of the Swedish Board of Censors, whose solemn and often outraged utterances cast comic sidelight on how the watchdogs of early 20thC morality saw Chaplin's art.
There are brief biographies of some of Chaplin's more notable colleagues, his rivals and imitators, and biographical information on Chaplin himself and the birth of his immortal
'Charlie' figure. There is a chapter on
'Spurious Chaplin Films'.
Uno Asplund is a noted Swedish film journalist. He has devoted many years to collecting and studying Chaplin's films,of which he has a complete library.Book out-of-print,as publisher ceased trading late 1980's.

From England's most capped captain,Mike Atherton's very personal account of England's fortunes, and of his own, over the past decade is of absorbing interest. For much of his Test career his was the wicket most prized by the opposition, and his account of innings against the great fast bowlers,Allan Donald,Curtly Ambrose,Courtney Walsh and his nemesis,Glenn McGrath, takes readers into the heat of battle, sledging and all.
Appointed captain of England when he was just twenty-five,he analyses, with unusual honesty and objectivity, his own sometimes stubborn character and the reasons for his often cool relationship with the press. He provides a perceptive assessment of his own successes and failures and describes his long-term battle for fitness against a painful and debilitating condition of inflammation in the joints.
The 'dirt in the pocket' episode, told by means of the diary he kept, makes for fascinating reading, both for his own part and that of the match referee,Peter Burge.
These revealing insights make his observations of others involved in the game more authoritative.
His sometimes uneasy relations with so-called 'cricket supremo' Ray Illingworth reveal some of the difficulties facing an England captain off the field of play. However, his loyalty to his players, and theirs to him,is clearly evident. Atherton chooses not to disguise his opinions of certain selectors during his tenure as captain; these views on the state of English cricket and the conditions needed for the building of a strong Test side are an important contribution to the current debate (then 2002).
Possibly the most thoughtful England captain since Mike Brearley, his uncompromising assessment of himself and vivid pen portraits of fellow players from Gooch and Gower to Stewart, Thorpe and Nasser Hussain are most revealing.A born writer, with the gift of a light touch, this is Atherton in his own words.
At sixteen he captained the England Under 19 team and he was made captain of the full England side in 1993 at the age of twenty-five.He represented England in 115 Test matches and captained his country on a record 54 occasions. He has a regular newspaper column in the 'Sunday Telegraph' and is a commentator on Channel 4.He was awarded the OBE in 1997.

In the space of three and a half weeks during May and early June 1940,the armed forces of Nazi Germany came breathtakingly
close to winning the new European war only
ten months after it had begun. The British Expeditionary Force and its French and Belgian allies were cut off in the north and driven back to the very sands of the Channel and the ruins of Dunkirk, the lone
port still in its hands. How that catastrophe was averted, through a combination of enemy blunders and British resourcefulness,is told here by Ronald Atkin,in an account that exposes the myth of the 'miracle of Dunkirk'.The true story
of those chaotic and desperate weeks is
dramatically chronicled through the diaries, memoirs and personal reminiscences
of hundreds of men who lived through them
- from COs to foot soldiers and generals to privates. The Imperial War Museum has been building up these archives of contemporary recollections over the last fifty years and Atkin is the first person to make use of their new research in such depth and set it in context of the military operations.Fifty years on,at last the full story can be told of the first major turning point in a war which, until then, had gone in only one direction
- Germany's.

The Mexican Revolution of 1910-20 has long exerted a peculiar fascination over the public imagination. Its heroes and heroines, its songs, battles and sieges, all
seem larger than life and many hundreds and thousands of printed words and feet of
film have been devoted to the exploits of men like Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa
- some of them hopelessly over-romantic,
others reflecting more accurately the bitterness and cruelty of the period. There
has, however, been no single complete account of these years and this book is the first. The story begins with the celebration in Sept,1910 of the centenary of Mexican independence and the eightieth birthday of the dictator Porfirio Diaz,a man whose much praised and outwardly secure-seeming regime was in fact,'dancing
on a volcano'.
All seemed secure,prosperous and hopeful,
yet the miles of new railways and exciting
oilfields were based on a hopeless economic policy designed to feather the nests of politicians and drain away the natural wealth of the country, and the great mass of Mexicans, both in the towns and in the haciendas, lived in conditions very close to slavery.Atkins guides the reader through the years that followed, drawing on a wide variety of sources, including eye-witness accounts, newspaper dispatches, diplomatic records and official
histories. He introduces the men who succeeded each other at the top of the
revolutionary pyramid:most achieved power through bloodshed,most died violently and ignobly.Francisco Madero,the Dreamer,who swept Diaz from power and was in turn toppled and murdered when he gave the people the vote instead of bread and land;
Victoriano Huerta the alcoholic general who followed Madero and held his Cabinet meetings in bars and cafes; Venustiano Carranza, the aloof landowner who replaced Huerta; Alvaro Obregon, the one-armed soldier who was to become one of Mexico's
outstanding Presidents; Pablo Gonzales,the
general who never won a battle, all are placed in their historical perspective.
Most important are the accounts of the two
archetypal revolutionary figures Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa, who are revealed in all their magnificence and cruelty. The Mexican Revolution was perhaps the first true social upheaval of this century.
Between 1910-20,the population of Mexico fell from 15 million to 12 million and its
certain that most of the suffering was borne by peasants who had little idea of what was at stake,or of the corruption and
self-seeking of their leadership, but for whom anything was preferable to the slavery of the Diaz years.

In 2008 a diary was discovered amongst some books donated to a charity bookshop in Oxford. It was a most remarkable book, supposedly written over three hundred years ago by a student, describing his life and unusual pet,a dodo.
Everyone knows the dodo,a comic and
ungainly bird, the sad symbol of extinction. But what was a living dodo really like? The author of the diary was a student of science and he recorded his pet's every move,as well a the reactions of his friends and acquaintances. He had some idea of the bird's rarity, but not that his pet might have been the last dodo to have walked upon the earth.
Doubts have been cast over the authenticity of the diary,so every page has been photographed and reprinted to enable readers to judge for themselves.
The editors, have included notes on the diary entries,on such subjects as astrology, book production, doll's houses, and gout. Many items were found stuffed between the diary pages, including a bookmark, cigarette cards, and a 1973 fishmonger's receipt, and these are all illustrated.
As well as providing a portrait of the famous bird and glimpses of 17thC Oxford, this is the history of a book: how it was printed, made, unmade, torn, stained, scribbled over, and forgotten. Now by strange good fortune both book and bird have come
back to us,large as life.
Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!

Why would anyone write a letter and then not send it? 'What a Hazard a Letter is,' wrote the poet Emily Dickinson, thinking of 'the Hearts it has scuttled and sunk'. Once sent, a letter cannot be taken back: it is like a depth charge dropped into the future, into other people s lives. The moment they re written, letters become, as Janet Malcolm puts it, fossils of feeling: they fix and freeze the sentiments we had at the time, though our lives may quickly move on and we may all too soon have second thoughts.
But what if, once written, a letter is not sent or never arrives?
What a Hazard a Letter is is the first book to look at the strange phenomenon of the unsent letter. 'What a Hazard a Letter is' is the first book to look at the strange phenomenon of the unsent letter. It collects together some of the most remarkable examples, from fiction and from real life, and explores the fascinating reasons why they came to be unsent, and the consequences sometimes farcical, sometimes agonisingly poignant, and sometimes actually changing the course of history. Here, then, are authors from Ian McEwan to Iris Murdoch, Abraham Lincoln to Ernest Hemingway, and Virginia Woolf to Van Gogh: magnificent tirades written in the red mist of rage, delicious to read but all the better for not being mailed; letters whose non-arrival sets a novel's plot careering down a new track; and tender words of love that never quite got said all, in their way,a little more eloquent for being unsent.

An anticipated return of Jackson Brodie - her fifth of the series - ex-military,ex-Cambridge Constabulary, now a private investigator. 'Death at The Sign of the Rook',described as a "brilliantly unique take on the classic country house murder" is for publishing in August 2024. Jackson Brodie has relocated to a quiet seaside village in North Yorkshire,in the occasional company of his recalcitrant teenage son Nathan and ageing Labrador Dido, both at the discretion of his former partner Julia. It's a picturesque setting, but there's something darker lurking behind the scenes.
Jackson's current job, gathering proof of an unfaithful husband for his suspicious wife, seems straightforward, but a chance encounter with a desperate man on a crumbling cliff leads him into a sinister network - and back into the path of someone from his past.
Old secrets and new lies intersect in this breathtaking new novel, both sharply funny and achingly sad,by one of the most dazzling and surprising writers at work today.

Cambridge is sweltering, during an unusually hot summer. To Jackson Brodie, former police inspector turned private investigator, the world consists of one accounting sheet - Lost on the left,Found on the right - and the two never seem to balance. His days are full of people clamouring for answers and explanations.A jealous husband suspects his wife. Two spinster sisters make a shocking find.A solicitor investigates an old murder.A nurse has lost her neice; a widow, her cats.Jackson has never felt at home in Cambridge and has a failed marriage to prove it. He is forty-five but feels much, much older. He is at that dangerous age when men suddenly notice that they're going to die eventually, inevitably, and there isn't a damn thing they can do about it.Surrounded by death, intrigue and misfortune, his own life is brought sharply into focus. Ingeniously plotted, full of suspense and heartbreak,'Case Histories' is a feat of bravura storytelling that conveys the mysteries of life, its inanities and its hilarities. It is a life-affirming work of profound insight and intelligence.

Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional and particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its 25+ year-old age and nature, i.e an ephemeral paperback Proof copy.It is only the minor, minimal fault described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall.Despite that,it really is still an exceptional, exemplary example for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of detracting faults usually encountered with a decades old paperback Proof copy.
This her second novel - the first,'Behind the Scenes in the Museum',in 1995 - see my book ID rja695917 - won the WHITBREAD BOOK of the YEAR prize.
Once it had been the great forest of Lythe - a vast and impenetrable thicket of green with a mystery in the very heart of the trees. And here,in the beginning, lived the Fairfaxes, grandly,at Fairfax Manor, visited once by the great Gloriana herself. But over the centuries the forest had been destroyed, replaced by Streets of Trees - Chestnut Avenue,Laurel Bank,Sycamore Street, and all that was left was Boscrambe Woods and the great Lady Oak.The Fairfaxes had dwindled too; now they lived in 'Arden' at the end of Hawthorne Close and were hardly a family at all. There was Vinny (the Aunt from Hell), irritating and irritable - 'Fun doesn't get the washing done' - with her cats and her crab-apple face. And Gordon, who had forgotten them for seven years and, when he remembered, came back with fat Debbie, who shared her one brain cell with a poodle and had something wrong with her tubes. And then there were Charles and Isobel, the children.Charles, the acne-scarred Lost Boy, passed his life awaiting visits from aliens and the return of his mother. But it is Isobel to whom the story belongs - Isobel, born on the Streets of the Trees in the muddled middle of the twentieth century, drops into pockets of time and out again.Isobel is sixteen and she too is waiting for the return of her mother - the thin, dangerous Eliza with her scent of nicotine, Arperge and sex, whose disappearance is part of the mystery that still remains at the heart of the forest.
Her new book is an audacious blend of history, comedy and tragedy, drawing on Shakespeare and the place of the forest in the imagination, distilled through the lives of an eccentric suburban family.
'Human Croquet' confirms Kate Atkinson as an outstanding writer of lyrical prose, and as a unique new voice in British fiction. Want more Kate ATKINSON titles? For similar and other titles, please search my MODERN FIRSTS2 catalogue.

Described hard, but fairly and honestly,it really is not as bad as it reads or would sound - particularly given the book's age and passage of time.
'Russia for Beginners' is a no-holds barred report by a team of intrepid pen-and-ink satirists who have nothing whatever to hide. Never having been to Russia in their lives,Alex Atkinson and Ronald Searle are free to show us the real Russia, the Russia few tourists are evr privileged to see,A heart-to-heart chat with Khrushchev? A trip to the forbidden Virgin Lands? An evening of poker at the Laughing Cossack Saloon? The authors spared themselves no pains in attempting to further East-West understanding.
Concealing nothing from the moment the first postcards were exchanged with the Town Clerk at Zhadanov until the time when Mr Atkinson was forcibly escorted from the waiting room at Moscow Airport with a coat thrown over his head, this book is essential for all rocking-chair readers who have till now lacked the visas, money,or imagination,to visit Russia for themselves. The final pages,in which the author throws caution to the winds and indulges in a frankly personal question-and-answer session about the significance of his experiences, are especially revealing.
'Russia for Beginners' is the most devastating travel book since these keen- eyed investigators gave us 'USA for Beginners'.

A day like any other for security chief Tracy Waterhouse, until she makes a purchase she hadn't bargained for.One moment of madness is all it takes for Tracy's humdrum world to be turned upside down, the tedium of everyday life replaced by fear and danger at every turn.
Witnesses to Tracy's Faustian exchange in the Merrion Centre in Leeds are Tilly,an elderly actress teetering on the brink of her own disaster, and Jackson Brodie, who has returned to his home county in search of someone else's roots. All three characters learn that the past is never history and that no good deed goes unpunished.
Kate Atkinson dovetails and counterpoints her plots with Dickensian brilliance in a tale peopled with unlikely heroes and villains. 'Started Early,Took My Dog' is freighted with wit, wisdom and a fierce moral intelligence. It confirms Kate Atkinson's position as one of the great writers of our time.
