The great voyages of discovery of the 16thC and 17thC brought European artists face to face with new and exotic plants and animals, and created an intense interest in the way nature was investigated and recorded. In 'Amazing Rare Things',Sir David Attenborough - the renowned naturalist and documentary-maker,and one of the natural world's best-loved commentators - leaves the here-and-now to explore the history of natural history instead.Joining expert curators from the Royal Library at Windsor Castle he explores the contributions of four great artists and one pre-eminent collector to this era of extraordinary scientific advances. Profusely illustrated throughout, this book is organized around a selection of exquisite drawings and water-colours by Leonardo da Vinci,Alexander Marshal,Maria Sibylla Merian, and Mark Catesby; and the works collected by Cassiano dal Pozzo from his immense 'Paper Museum'.These beautiful images - all held in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle - reflect each artist's engagement with the natural world, from Renaissance Italy and England, and on to the New World of the Americas.Sir David Attenborough's introduction, discussing representations of the natural world from prehistory to the present day, leads the reader on to detailed examinations of the passions and achievements of each of these five individuals, with fresh, lucid and thought-provoking commentaries provided throughout by Sir David on a range of their works. All artists have responded to and been inspired by the natural world. This unique and fascinating book shines a new light on the role of art and the artist in our exploration of that world. From the land divers of Pentecost Island and the sing-sings of New Guinea,to a Royal Kava ceremony on Tonga and the ancient art of the Northern Territory,it is a journey like no other. Alongside these remarkable cultures he encounters paradise birds, chameleons, sifakas and many more animals in some of the most unique environments on the planet. Written with David Attenborough's characteristic charm, humour and warmth,'Journeys to the Other Side of the World' is an inimitable adventure among people, places and the wildest of wild life.                               Sir David Attenborough is a broadcaster and naturalist whose television career is now in its seventh decade. After studying Natural Sciences at Cambridge and a brief stint in publishing,he joined the BBC. Since the launch of his famous Zoo Quest series in 1954 he has surveyed almost every aspect of life on earth and brought it to the viewing public. His latest program,Blue Planet II,was the most-watched nature documentary of all time.                          Please contact seller, because of the weight of this item, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!               N.B. Teaching as it should be: an outstanding observer of the world around us,sharing his fascination and excitement. Now in his 80s (then 2009),Sir David has never stopped widening his interests.Mineral, fossil, vegetable, human and other animals - he keeps his eyes open and discusses what he sees and thinks, with not only charm and intelligence but something rarer - directness. He knows how to speak to people. So in 2009 BBC4 suggested to him a series of very short - 10-minute - weekly radio talks,a new medium for this master of television,on any subjects he cared to choose. These relaxed but concentrated, 'bite-sized' broadcasts are predictably a triumph,on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings. But radio is impermanent, has a faithful but smaller audience than television, and above all is not visual. So this book not only offers the complete texts of the first five months of the Life Stories radio talks, but has given David Attenborough the chance to illustrate them.To this he has brought his personal selection of pictures old and new,and his commentary on each - from creatures perfectly preserved in amber millions of years ago to singing gibbons of today, mermaids and salamanders, dragons and Charles Darwin, great collections and bird artists of the past. For any reader with curiosity and a lively mind, here is rich entertainment - full of surprises and unexpected pleasures. UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn,8-320pp [paginated] includes author's introduction, chapters, subjects' (plants) profuse colour photographs interspersed throughout the text and the book, acknowledgements, and an index; plus [unpaginated] half-title with colour photographic frntis to reverse, title page, contents list/table and first page of the introduction these being joined at lower corner and untrimmed. Without plants, there would be no food,no animals of any sort,no life on Earth at all.Yet for most of the time their lives remain a secret to us,hidden, private events. The reason is merely a difference of time. Plants live on a different time-scale from ours. Though not obviously to the naked eye, they are constantly on the move: developing, fighting, avoiding or exploiting predators or neighbours, struggling to find food,to increase their territories,to reproduce themselves,to find and hold a place in the sun.We only need to learn to look. In this book, and his BBC television series, David Attenborough does look.He examines in turn the great trials of plant life the world over: 1 Travelling,2 Growing,3 Flowering,4 The Social Struggle,5 Living Together and 6 Surviving. David Attenborough shows us the natural world and how it works, with a clarity and infectious enthusiasm that few other writers or film-makers have matched. One of the most successful teachers of the late 20th century, his books and films are consistently of the highest quality.'The Private Life of plants' is central to his work, the background to all that he has studied so far. Given this fascinating new view of vegetable life, anything that grows on soil or rock or water,in open country or the smallest garden, suddenly seems quite different: less gentle altogether,in restless motion night and day, locked in the endless competition necessary for survival. Attenborough's brilliant new book (then 1990) and BBC TV series follow 'Life on Earth' and 'The Living Planet' in surveying the whole animal kingdom - mites and mammals, insects, fishes, birds and reptiles worldwide - but with a difference. Whereas the earlier books were about evolution and the variety and development of animal's bodies, this one is about the way they use those bodies: how animals behave and why. Each chapter, like each TV programme of the same title, looks at a separate stage in the life of animals. In each,Sir David shows with dramatic and often moving examples how from birth to death all animals have to solve a particular set of problems if they are to survive and eventually pass their genes to the next generation.Life is indeed a series of trials. This book ends a trilogy begun 11 years ago with 'Life on Earth',which set out to examine the vast diversity of animal life. The second book,'The Living Planet', concentrated on the other great influence that shapes the bodies of animals - the environment. Thus, the first two books are concerned with the bodies of animals and the way they have been shaped. This last book looks at the way animals use those bodies and the way they behave. David Attenborough wrote the text, and chose the colour photographs to illustrate it,at th same time as making the films. The book and TV programmes complement each other. Attenborough has collected twenty three awards and thirty-one honorary degrees from British universities since 1970.His contribution to broadcasting and wildlife film-making has brought him international recognition, and his BBC programmes are considered the exemplary model of public service broadcasting. During the 1960s and early 1970s Britain was devastated by railway closures and many parts of the country were left without any kind of railway service.Since the 1960s,Britain has witnessed the closure of over 2,000 stations and many thousands of miles of track, thus halving the network that had been inherited from the Victorians and littering the landscape with the remains of abandoned railways. The timetables of the 1950s and early 1960s are therefore filled with journeys which are now either impracticable or impossible. 'Paul Atterbury's Lost Railway Journeys' is not just about closed lines,it is about memory, nostalgia and imagination.Walking old railways is now a national past time, while many miles of lost lines have also been saved as preserved or heritage railways. The lines and journeys in this book are arranged regionally, and have been selected to show the diversity of the routes that were lost. They are depicted in their prime and as surviving remains integrated within the landscape, waiting to be rediscovered by the generations that knew them best. In this nostalgic journey,Paul Atterbury traces the routes that have long since been abandoned but are nevertheless still rich in railway culture. Paul Atterbury is probably familiar to many as a long-standing member of the team of experts on BBC TV's 'Antique Roadshow' and someone who has always appreciated the importance of ephemera in telling the story of domestic life in the 20thC. For many people train travel is just a necessity,a quick and efficient means of transport that tends to be taken for granted, until it goes wrong.Yet,a train journey can be so much more, bringing together history, landscape and the particular but ever-changing view of Britain through the carriage window. Much of the network in use today, and its infrastructure,is a legacy of the 19thC, built by Victorian entrepreneurs and engineers, and you can explore these wonderful railway journeys all over Britain's national railway network. Paul Atterbury shares a wealth of memories and stories about the many railway journeys he has taken in Britain, encouraging you to explore the wonderful railway journeys that are still there to be enjoyed all over Britain's national railway network. The routes selected are particular favourites from the National Network, with a special combination of landscape, history and visual pleasure. They range from short, but classic, branch lines to long-distance routes that explore the best of Britain's countryside to link interesting cities, towns and villages. The journeys are arranged regionally, from the far west of Cornwall to the Highlands of Scotland. They also represent the full history of Britain's railways from the 1850s to the early years of the 20thC. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable, and even internally, the book is also in a more than acceptable condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it's age and nature, i.e. a child's ephemeral book.It is only the exterior faults and the minor minimal internal faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading.Despite them,it really is still an acceptable example for collectors and for its cleanliness and brightness. Mabel Lucie Attwell (b. 4th June,1879 – d. 5th November,1964) was a British illustrator and comics artist, known for her cute and nostalgic drawings of children. Her drawings are featured on many postcards, advertisements, posters, books and ceramic figurines. Educated privately and at the Coopers' Company School and at the Regent Street school. She studied at Heatherley's and Saint Martin's School of Art,but left to develop her own interest in imaginary subjects, disliking the emphasis on still-life drawing and classical subjects. As well as illustrating such children's classics as Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland, Attwell produced her own Annuals and 'midget books'. The 'Lucie Attwell Annual' was published from 1922 - 1974,its continuing publication ten years after her death being made possible by extensive re-use of images. She also drew a comic-strip for the magazine,The Passing Show, and contributed to Pearsons, the Strand and many other magazines. Top+fore-edges bright and clean; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, unread apart from my own collation.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered paper-covered boards with dw/dj design/illustration repeated to same, with immaculate plain pale cream eps.UK,slim landscape 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,96pp including two-colour pictorial illustrated title page,a preface, profuse colour water-colour illustrations (the majority) with some in b/w pencil, all with handwritten text/notes,throughout the text and the book. 'Edwardian Rambles' portrays Henry Atty's talent as an artist and observer of the countryside and towns he visited during his leisure time, cycling in Cheshire and Wirral, alone or with his wife and friends, during the first years of this century (then the 20th).His talent would have gone unnoticed if what he produced had not recently been discovered at the back of a wardrobe by the grand-daughter of a friend of his,to whom he had given this journal, which he called Cycling Rambles. Readers of this evocative, wonderfully illustrated book can delight in this craftsman's superb work with paintbrush and pencil, his knowledgeable asides about the historical and literary connections of the area, his visual and written descriptions of the flora and fauna, churches, public houses, and so much more along the way.And one of his longest cycle rides, about twenty-five miles from his home, was to Chester,a city he depicts with well-informed artistry. Yet it is not necessary to know this part of the North West of England to be transported back to those years just before the First World War.Here is a world which, although of this century (then the 20th),now seems far in the past - a time when it was still safe, and a pleasure,to have an exhilarating and enlightening day out on two wheels, only rarely having to cope with,as Atty puts it,'the dust of passing motor cars'. Each page is individually illustrated and handwritten, and the occasional minor errors in spelling add to the charm and immediacy of what was produced with no intention of reaching a wide readership. Henry Atty would almost certainly be astonished, and we think delighted,to see his work available now for all to enjoy. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too! Margaret Atwood's classic novel, THE HANDMAID'S TALE, was about the future. Now, in 'ORYX AND CRAKE', the future has changed. It's much worse. And we're well on the road to it now. The narrator of Margaret Atwood's riveting new novel is Snowman, self-named though not self-created. As the story begins, he's sleeping in a tree, wearing a dirty old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beautiful and beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. Earlier, Snowman's life was one of comparative privilege. How did everything fall apart so quickly? Was he himself in any way responsible? Why is he now left alone with his bizarre memories - except for the more-than-perfect, green-eyed Children of Crake, who think of him as a kind of monster? He explores the answers to these questions in the double journey he takes - into his own past, and back to Crake's high-tech bubble dome, where the Paradice Project unfolded and the world came to grief. With breathtaking command of her shocking material and with her customary sharp wit and dark humour, Atwood projects us into a less-than-brave new world, an outlandish yet wholly believable space populated by a cast of characters who will continue to inhabit your dreams long after the last chapter. This is Margaret Atwood at the absolute peak of her powers. A recently widowed fantasy writer is guided through a stormy winter evening by the voice of her late husband. An elderly lady with Charles Bonnet syndrome comes to terms with the little people she keeps seeing, while a newly formed populist group gathers to burn down her retirement residence. A woman born with a genetic abnormality is mistaken for a vampire, and a crime committed long ago is revenged in the Arctic via a 1.9 billion-year-old stromatalite. In these nine tales,Margaret Atwood ventures into the shadowland earlier explored by fabulists and concoctors of dark yarns such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Daphne du Maurier and Arthur Conan Doyle - and also by herself,in her award-winning novel 'Alias Grace.' In 'Stone Mattress.',Margaret Atwood is at the top of her darkly humorous and seriously playful game. 'Ten days after the war ended,my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge.' Thus begins 'The Blind Assassin',Margaret Atwood's stunning new novel (then 2000). Laura Chase's older sister Iris, married at eighteen to a politically prominent industrialist but now poor and eighty-two,is living in Port Ticonderoga,a town dominated by their once-prosperous family before the First War.While coping with her unreliable body,Iris reflects on her far from exemplary life,in particular the events surrounding her sister's tragic death.Chief among these was the publication of 'The Blind Assassin',a novel which earned the dead Laura Chase not only notoriety but also a devoted cult following: as Iris says, she herself lives 'in the long shadow cast by Laura'. Sexually explicit for its time,'The Blind Assassin' describes a risky affair in the turbulent thirties between a wealthy young woman and a man on the run.During their secret meetings in rented rooms, the lovers concoct a pulp fantasy set on Planet Zycron. As the invented story twists through love and sacrifice and betrayal,so does the real one; while events in both move closer to war and catastrophe. By turns lyrical, outrageous, formidable, compelling and funny, this is a novel filled with deep humour and dark drama. It is Margaret Atwood at her breathtaking best. In her captivating new novel (then 1993), Margaret Atwood reports from the farthest reaches of the sex wars. The group of women and men at the centre of this wise, unsettling, drastic, funny and wholly involving story all fall prey to a chillingly recognisable menace, which is given its power by their own fantasies and delusions. Set in Canada in the 1970's,'The Robber Bride' explores several of Atwood's favourite topics - sex,the empowerment of women, the nature of violence, and the inescapable binding of women's fates to the men they know.Loosely based on 'The Robber Bridegroom' by the Brothers Grimm, where an evil groom lures three unsuspecting women into his lair and devours them, the story follows the lives of three women who have been injured by a mutual friend,Zenia,a sociopath whose only joy is hurting people. In Atwood's charateristic style, each of them - Tony,Roz,and Charis - is in some way weak and vulnerable. Beautiful and arrogant,Zenia befriends each woman long enough to determine what would hurt her most deeply, then steals, seduces, and casts aside the man each woman loves. The course of the novel spans less than a week, beginning at a moment of revelation for each woman, when she finds out Zenia is not, as she had believed, dead. Each is forced to deal with the threat Zenia poses to her sanity and relive her defeat at her hands.Driven to act,the three women each arrive on their own at Zenia's hotel to seek retribution but they each, independently, reach the decision not to kill her. On the surface, this is a bleak tale that wallows in the destructive side of human emotions - envy, hatred, and retribution - but by the end,a warmer message emerges: the consolation offered by shared companionship and affection. [EF.] Magnificently written and conceived,'The Robber Bride' is Atwood's finest novel to date. This is her 8th novel. Noma Bar is an Israeli graphic designer, illustrator and artist, based in London. His work has been described as "deceptively simple", featuring flat colours, minimal detail and negative space to create images that often carry double meanings that are not immediately apparent. Margaret Atwood's dystopian masterpiece,'The Handmaid's Tale.' is a recognised classic. Now she brings the iconic story to a dramatic conclusion in this riveting sequel.More than fifteen years after the events of 'The Handmaid's Tale',the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third voice: a woman who wields power through the ruthless accumulation and deployment of secrets. As Atwood unfolds 'The Testaments',she opens up the innermost workings of Gilead as each woman is forced to come to terms with who she is,and how far she will go for what she believes. 'Dear Readers: Everything you've ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we've been living in.' Noma Bar is an Israeli graphic designer, illustrator and artist, based in London. 'Dear Readers: Everything you've ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book.Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we've been living in.' 'Up In the Tree' is the charming story of two children who decide to make their home in the leafy branches of a tree.wonderfully playful and whimsical, this is vintage Margaret Atwood.Long out of print,'Up In The Tree' was first published in 1978. From her introduction(?): I drew this book in the very early days of children's book publishing in Canada,We could use only two colours,as three would have been too expensive to print: hence the blue, the red,and the odd brown that is a combination of the two.I hand-lettered the entire book for the same reaso: to save on costs.I had a background in poster design and printing - in my university days in the late fifties I'd had a little serigraph poster business that I ran on the ping-pong table - so I knew how to do the lettering. The drawings were black and white pen-and-ink - I then indicated to the publisher which of the two colours should go where. The techniques were primitive - there were no computers then - and the results look a little primitive as well, but I remain very fond of this book, for sentimental reasons. - Margaret Atwood,2005. This book aims to rescue from neglect a period of naval history having much in common with the Armada and Trafalgar campaigns, yet virtually unknown to the general reading public. For over 80 years (then 1979) no attempt has been made to assess the importance of the battles of Barfleur and the Hogue, which saved England from invasion in 1692 by a Franco-Irish army already assembled in Normandy and from the danger of a second civil war had Jacobite sympathizers been given a rallying point. The account of naval operations is based almost entirely on contemporary sources and is set against the political background of the uneasy first five years of the English revolution. It leads to a more favourable view of Edward Russell, the English naval commander-in-chief,than has hitherto been accorded him. The story of the struggle at sea that followed the flight of James II is of particular interest, not only to the naval historian, but also to the general student of war and international conflict. Many matters with which we are familiar in the twentieth century were already the subject of trial,of argument and of resolution in the seventeenth. The command and control of a large fleet, its relations with an allied navy, the degree to which a government might interfere in an admiral's conduct of operations, the defence of trade, the mounting of joint operations with the army, the administrative backing and finance for large naval and military forces - all these things and more find a place in the narrative. Minisculely bumped with miniscule reciprocal creases to head+foot of spine/backstrip but no bumped corners.Top+fore-edges slightly aged and generally clean; contents bright, tight and clean.Unblemished, plain black paper-covered boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,1-230pp includes half-title+title pages,a Contents list, and 12 stories. It's only twelve miles long and two miles wide, but it has more money for its area, more history packed into its relatively brief settlement, and more emotional and intellectual energy coursing through its streets than any other place on earth. Manhattan is the setting for all of Louis Auchincloss's fiction, and it is the stage on which those New Yorkers whose roots go down to its bedrock play out the drama of their lives. From the turn of the century to our present urban follies, these stories follow the fortunes of the socially secure and powerful as they try to cope with the changes shaped by the momentous events and growing anxieties of recent decades.Taken together, the tales weave a larger pattern of human strengths and foibles that bemuses the mind and touches the heart. The elegant prose, crystalline dialogue, immense insight into the mores, preoccupations, and afflictions of the rich, and the connoisseur's sense of both art and life are characteristic of Auchincloss - all are here, but with a depth of passion and irony exceeding anything he has accomplished in the past. To Jacques Giron, painter, his art was everything and when he was at work, nothing, nobody else mattered. So it was that when he came to the little French fishing village of Aumer and saw in childlike Francine Goulard the incarnation of all the beauty of the sea and the shore,he first visualized her as an exquisite picture - then he fell in love. Francine, enamoured by Jacque's charm, was convinced that she, too, loved him and consented to marry to marry him.And so they journeyed to Paris in search of new inspiration - but happiness was short- lived and Jacques was led to unfaithfulness.Heartbroken,Francine returned to her grandparents at Aumer, there to take up the threads of her old, tranquil life; but love came afresh to her in the form of Paul d'Amiot,a man of the sea and childhood friend - a love so deep and strong that with him she was prepared to become an outcast, facing the disapproval of both Church and people. Author's (rare - more so with a dw/dj) debut novel, one of four that were not of crime fiction.Better known to collectors and readers, for his later published crime fiction titles, with his series characters; Monsieur Pinaud and Hercule Renard - these novels being set in France. He also wrote under pseudonym Peter Hodemart. Seventy-two-year-old August Brill is at his daughter's house in Vermont, recovering from a car accident. When sleep refuses to come,he lies in bed and tells himself stories, struggling to push back thoughts about things he would prefer to forget - his wife's recent death and the horrific murder of his granddaughter's boyfriend,Titus. August imagines a parallel world in which America is not at war with Iraq but with itself. In this other America the Twin Towers did not fall, and the 2000 election results led to secession,as state after state pulled away from the union, and a bloody civil war ensued. As the night progresses,August's story grows increasingly intense.and what he is so desparately trying to avoid insists on being told. An old man sits in a room, with a single door and window,a bed,a desk and a chair. Each day he awakes with no memory, unsure of whether or not he is locked into the room.Attached to the few objects around him are one-word,hand-written labels and on the desk is a series of vaguely familiar black-and-white photographs and four piles of paper. Then a middle-aged woman called Anna enters and talks of pills and treatment, but also of love and promises. Who is this Mr Blank, and what is his fate? What does Anna represent from his past - and will he have enough time to ever make sense of the clues that arise? Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and particularly internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it’s age and its nature, i.e. an ephemeral p/back book.It really is an exceptional copy for its cleanliness and brightness. The medical side of the Royal Navy at its grass roots has never been recorded. Here is a narrative which covers this aspect and is informative and of historical value. It gives a good picture of a rating's life on foreign stations prior to WW2,it tells of conditions prevailing in Plymouth during the Blitz and describes operations in the Mediterranean in which HMS Stalker took part in 1942/43. The books title alludes to the dispensation of Epsom and other Salts in Medicine, the salty seas, and Old Salts - the sailors. A copy of the manuscript is now preserved at the Imperial War Museum which sets great store on its value.
