BABINGTON, ANTHONY:

Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated, monochrome photographic illustrated dw/dj panels, with red+white lettering; with negligible shelf-wear or creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Top+fore-edges bright and clean; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread - apart from my own collation.Publisher's bright, crisp, clean, sharp-cornered,original plain dark green cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st reprint,xiipp-2-238pp [paginated] includes 20 chapters,a postscript,an appendix,a bibliography and an index; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,a contents list/table,a quotation (Duke of Wellington),acknowledgements,a preface and 6pp blanks at the rear of the book. According to the official records of the British Army a total of 346 officers and men were summarily executed at dawn following their convictions by courts martial in the field between the outbreak of the First World War and the end of March 1920.The details of their trials and executions have been closed to the public ever since, but during the last decade there has arisen a sense of profound uneasiness regarding the circumstances surrounding their deaths. In the preparation of this book Anthony Babington has made use of a great deal of new evidence which has only recently come to light and which has enabled a full and accurate account of these matters to be written for the very first time.It is now apparent that although the majority of the executed men were guilty,or technically guilty,of the charges that had been laid against them, many of them were treated with considerable injustice and considerable inhumanity. They were usually tried by comparatively junior officers; their defences, such as they were, were seldom adequately presented; after the trials had finished the papers were passed for review to a succession of senior commanders who were kept in total ignorance of the mitigating circumstances which should have influenced their decisions; the condemned were informed of their impending executions either on the evening before,or on the actual morning that they were to be taken out and shot; and there was no proper procedure by which they could appeal. There can be little doubt that a not insubstantial proportion of them had been suffering from emotional shock or nervous exhaustion at the time thay had committed their 'offences'. Few of those who shared the responsibility for the executions will emerge with credit from these revelations,be they senior officers, doctors,or government ministers. This is a grim,at times horrifying story. But most people will feel that it is a story which should no longer remain untold. There is a postscript to the book by Major-General Frank Richardson in which he explains the attitudes of the medical profession which prevailed at the time, particularly their failure to acknowledge the existence of shell-shock. 'Blaze' originally written in 1973 and published in 2007. BIG MOTHER At 6'7" and built like a bear,Clay Blaisdell is one big mother, but his capers are strictly small-time until he meets George Rackley.George instroduces him to a hundred cons and the one big score that every small timer dreams of: kidnap. Gertrude Bacon (1874-1949) was the daughter of the scientist and balloonist Rev. John Maczenzie Bacon, and accompanied him on most of his expeditions. "Bacon became fascinated by flying and as a journalist reported on the various airships and planes being built." In August 1904 she became the first woman to fly in an airship, being a passenger in the near-disastrous first flight of an 84-foot-long ship designed by Stanley Spencer. "From 22 to 29 August,1909,the world's first aviation meeting was held at Rheims,France. Bacon was determined to go for a ride in one of the new machines. On the last day she was taken up in a Farman plane, squeezed between the radiator and the pilot. She described the takeoff: 'The motion was wonderfully smooth - smoother yet - and then - ! Suddenly there had come into it a new indescribable quality - a lift - a lightness - a life!' Thus she became the first Englishwoman to fly.Bacon flew on several other occasions, and became the first ever hydroplane passenger at Lake Windermere in 1912. Includes a photograph of French aviator Roger Sommer at the controls of his Farman biplane. In August of 1909 Ms. Bacon became the first reported English woman to fly,as a passenger,at Rheims with Sommer piloting. "Golf: The object is to drive a gutta-percha ball in the smallest number of strokes into a succession of holes, scattered most of them at wide intervals from each other over some waste track of turf. . ." So The Pall Mall Gazette attempted to describe the game in November,1868. Inauspicious beginnings; but since then, the game of golf has captured and held the imagination of millions, all over the world. Today, golf can be something of an industry,in which a fortune can be won or lost on a missed putt. But there was a golden age of golf: an age of amateurism and near-innocence; one that all lovers of the game think of with affection and a touch of nostalgia. 'GOLF: THE GOLDEN YEARS' is a celebration of that age: the end of the 19th century and the first 40 years of the 20th,when giants of the game such as Vardon and Sarazen walked the links, and the colossus that was Bobby Jones towered over them all. Divided into three sections, and introduced by a history of golf in the golden age from the incomparable pen of Bernard Darwin, the book covers the whole spectrum of the golfing world. On every page there is something to entertain, delight and inform. The first section - Great Moments,Great Courses - ranges from a report of a pilgrimage to St. Andrews in 1892,through Sarazen's great charge at the Open in 1932,to a 1937 report of the world's most testing finish: the last two at Carnoustie.Great Characters, the second section, profiles Tom Morris,"the Father of Golf",and reports on the life and play of the remarkable Bobby Jones. The final section - A Golfing Bag - covers such vital matters as etiquette on the golf course and a defence of caddies,as well as tips on play from names that are now legends. Beautifully illustrated throughout from the collections of one of the world's leading experts on golfing ephemera and those of her friends,'Golf: The Golden Years' is a treasure-house to delight all golfers - scratch players and duffers alike - and be an invaluable source of reference to collectors. Not only does it bring to life the players, the courses and the great moments from golf's golden age; it also conveys a sense of the sheer fun,the exhilaration, and - sometimes - the low comedy of a day on the links. Sarah Baddiel fell in love with the game of golf some 12 years ago (then 1989). Since then, she has become probably the world's foremost dealer in golfing literature and ephemera.Golfiana, her shop in Grays Antique Market,London,is well-known to professionals and amateurs alike,on both sides of the Atlantic. She is a member of the Golf Collector's Society of America and the British Golf Collector's Society, and frequently contributes to golfing magazines and books; she wrote for the section on Collecting Golfiana for the Library Association's definitive 'Sourcebook of Golf'. Group Captain Douglas Bader has become a legend in his lifetime.Legendary too are Britain's two most famous fighters, the Spitfire and the Hurricane.Perhaps no one is better suited than Douglas Bader to tell their story.Bader lost both his legs as a result of a flying accident in 1931, was invalided from the RAF in 1933,and rejoined in 1939.He first saw action in a Spitfire over Dunkirk, and in a Hurricane during the Battle of Britain. He rapidly became one of Britain's foremost aces. In August 1941 he was brought down over France and made a prisoner. His story begins with the birth of these two great fighting aeroplanes. Then he follows their fortunes through the war.The Spitfire and Hurricane fought all over the world. They flew high, they flew low - on land and on sea; they were adapted to many military and naval tasks. But their greatest contribution was when the RAF was fighting for the sky in the high summer of 1940 and the Hurricane and the Spitfire outfought the Luftwaffe to change the course of history.Douglas Bader's story is interlaced with his own experiences and those of his fellow pilots. He assesses the aeroplanes themselves, describes his methods of fighting and recounts some of his more memorable experiences. At the same time a number of 'aces' alive today (then 1973) have contributed pieces specially for the book. The book is superbly illustrated not only with b/w action photographs but also with rare and remarkable colour photographs. Please contact seller, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!

In this exceptional, surprising book,Keith Badman has taken the role of forensic detective to uncover long lost or previously unseen personal records, exclusive interviews and eyewitness accounts that reveal the details of Marilyn Monroe's last days. After five years of research,Badman reveals precisely how she died and the cover-up that ensued, startegic delays on the night of her overdose, the name of her real father, her rumoured remarriage to Joe Di Maggio, and ends forever the debates aboout her involvement with John and Bobby Kennedy. He exposes the reality about her final (unfinished) movie,'Something's Got to Give',the night she sang for JFK and the details of her final week alive. Maroon paper-covered boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,vii-xpp+1- 166pp includes half-title+title pages, contents+ illustrations lists, author preface,a prologue,Parts I+2 [Pt 1-7 seven chapters and an Interlude,Pt 2 - 1 chapter],an Epilogue,21 b/w contemporary photographs interspersed throughout the text.] On Wednesday,December 6th,1978,the term 'luncheon voucher' took on a new currency. Members of the clergy,Parliament, the Bar and big business were gathered together in Streatham, London for a Christmas party when the police burst in and arrested the hostess.Films, devices and hastily dressed people were taken to the station.Over a year later Cynthia Payne was sentenced to eighteen months in Holloway Prison for 'keeping a disorderly house'.Her distinguished guests went unnamed.Members of the press fell over themselves leaping to her defence. To an amused and largely sympathetic public,Cynthia Payne came to stand for naughtiness as opposed to wickedness - a beacon for genial 'old buffers' in the gloom of declining years. Throughout Paul Bailey's touching, frequently uproarious telling of Cynthia's own story one can see that the sympathy was not misplaced. Cynthia's anarchic dazzle was there right from the beginning, though she had had to overcome the early loss of an adoring mother, the rebuffs of a distant father and comparisons with a determinedly prim sister. Her cousin could not remember a time when Cynthia wasn't talking about sex.It was a fun-loving childhood,to put it mildly.A sequence of largely unscrupulous lovers, who left her frequently pregnant and financially struggling, plus two children and three abortions, led her to the conclusion that 'there wasn't a single man in the whole wide bloody world I could rely on to look after me'.First as a landlady, briefly as a prostitute's maid (having to make lots of tea to accomodate the 'Golden Rain' trade),rather unenthusiastically on the game herself for two years,Cynthia finally had her epiphany: "I found myself when I started organizing sex for other people." Her business worked well because Cynthia was above all understanding and she could keep a straight face. Some of her client's requirements were eye-opening.There was the ex-police superintendent who drove fervently to Somerset so he could take off his clothes and clean Agatha's cooker, the collector of taxes anxious to pretend he was a lesbian, the clergyman who clearly wanted an angel with wings. Through Cynthia's portals passed transvestites and slaves galore,a night-watchman who had never tried sex until he was sixty-two,and her own father. In part,Cynthia's establishment was dedicated to giving the elderly their confidence back, and she gave a £3 discount to old age pensioners, and charged half-price to those who were pretty well past it.She chose her girls for their character and honesty. Her clients were satisfied and impressed. Cynthia's story is fascinating and funny and it will be a rare reader who is not taken by surprise at some point in this book.If it all seems as normal as poached egg on toast, admit it,you've been to Cynthia's. Carp are a big, beautiful and hard fighting, and therefore are greatly sought after by all coarse fishermen. As a species they are very intelligent, making them all the more difficult to catch. As a result, the landing of any carp should be seen as an achievement, and to capture a particulaly wary fish is truly a remarkable event. It is on these serious challenges that John Bailey and his team of contributors concentrate.Over forty experiences tell of the waters, the fish, the problems encountered, and the solutions found. 'Carp Challenge' tells of a big and small fish, from large and small waters, old lakes and new pits, from the UK and overseas. Some of the carp are famous and others are secret, but all have taxed the skill and nerve of their pursuers to the limit. The contributors include many household names, such as Bernard Venables,Julian Cundiff,Chris Ball,Harry Haskell and Tony Miles, and all the captures are described in plain, straightforward language with the emphasis on instruction as much as excitement. The though-provoking encounters described in this absorbing book will inspire every carp angler. The author with this edition, since further research has uncovered fresh facts, while others have been revised; concentrates on the span of Gilbert and Sullivan's lives alone, reassessing the cultural contribution they made, with D'Oyly Carte,to their world,to posterity and not least to the gaeity of nations. In this lively and authoritative biography Baily sets its fascinatingly contrasted progenitors in the context of the world in which they worked and from which they drew their inspiration.W.S. Gilbert was in many ways a typical Victorian gentleman, yet his satirical absurdities often made his contemporaries uneasy; while Arthur Sullivan rose from a working-class background to become the foremost British composer of the day and the darling of smart society. With Richard D'Oyly Carte, whose business acumen allied to progressive taste catalysed their talents, these two wrought a revolution in the theatre, and Baily traces the story of their partnership from the inauspicious failure of Thespis through the dazzling succession of triumphs at home and abroad to the final series of disastrous quarrels.Text and illustrations combine to give a vivid picture of an age,and of the men who created a uniquely English confection of mock-heroic satire, geniality and authentic lyricism which, far from fading with the age that engendered it,still retains a special place in the culture and affections of the English-speaking world. In 1764,the great Samuel Johnson, irascible genius, unparalleled wit and the toast of all society,is plagued by ill health and has become jaded with his bickering dependants.Suffering from a bout of melancholy,he accepts an introduction to the table of Henry Thrale,a wealthy Southwark brewer, and his vivacious wife Hester. Thus begins an extraordinary relationship that is to last twenty years and allows us into a world unknown to James Boswell. As Johnson settles into the generous niche, established for him in the Thrales' crowded and hectic household,he comes increasingly to rely upon Hester Thrale, and their intimate friendship develops into something darker and more ambiguous. The family is drawn into the raucous chaotic caravan of Johnson's friends and admirers: Garrick and Goldsmith,Fanny Burney and Joshua Reynolds, sycophants, scholars and drunkards, and it is left to Hester's neglected oldest daughter, named after her mother but known as Queeney, prodigiously clever, spirited and mocking, to provide her own sharp commentary on the destruction that ensues. Against the brilliant background of Georgian London,'ACCORDING TO QUEENEY' candidly and comically tells a story of unrequited love, passion, rejection and possession, revealing the sexual tensions that lie beneath the ordered surface of everyday life. On Wednesday April 10th 1912,R.M.S. Titanic left Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York.Four days later, half an hour before midnight, she struck an iceberg.By 2 a.m. the last lifeboat had rowed frantically away. Then, within only twenty minutes, the great ship had sunk and 1500 peope had lost their lives. 'Every Man for Himself' recaptures those four crucial days lost with the ship.Never has Beryl Bainbridge's spare, laconic style of writing been used to better advantage. No word is wasted to convey the intensity of emotion and the fatality of the journey. The story is told by Morgan, the young nephew of the owner of the shipping line, his fate linked to a Jewsh tailor from Manchester,a deserted opera singer and the mysterius Scurra. Was the Titanic, despite repeated ice warnings, travelling too fast? Why was she issued with a certificate of seaworthiness when there was a fire blazing in the stoke hold of No.10 bunker? And why did Scurra, long before tragedy struck, remark that it was 'every man for himself'? Beryl Bainbridge's countless admirers have waited five years for a new novel. They will not be disappointed. In 1603 John Ward,a sailor in James I's Navy led a mass desertion, stole a civilian vessel from Portsmouth Harbour, and defected to the Ottoman Empire's outpost at Tunis. From there, his unbridled and brutal piracy saw him become the most infamous and feared privateer of his time, revelling in ill-gotten wealth ashore, and finally - in the ultimate rejection of his native land - embracing Islam.'Barbary Pirate' is Ward's extraordinary untold story. When John Ward arrived in Tunis,he set himself up as a privateer under the protection of the Pasha. He led a revolution in seafaring tactics that rejuvenated the Barbary Corsairs of Ottoman North Africa.Under Ward's tutelage Muslim corsairs, previously dependent on oar-powered galleys, began to sail English- style square-rigged ships.Ward attacked Christian shipping of all nations. His greatest triumph was the capture of a massive Venetian galleon that was transformed into the flagship of Ward's growing fleet. Ward's exploits made him extremely wealthy. He purchased a palatial mansion in Tunis, from which he established a mock court of scruffy renegades, issuing decrees and receiving obeisance like a king. But his success came at a price. In Europe he was infamous.Seen as a Judas bent on undermining all Christendom,he became a prize with a price on his head and was pursued by pirate-hunters across the Mediterranean. While to his contemporaries John Ward was the blackest of villains,to later generations his exploits were the stuff of legend, and eventually Ward himself was seen as a hero.Greg Bak uncovers the truth and tells the compelling story of a man who rose from nothing to become a brilliant naval commander and a spectacularly successful,if amoral, entrepreneur. The author is a librarian with a doctorate in history. This is his first book.He lives in Ottawa,Canada. Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. Many books have been written on a variety of aspects of the English Civil War - political, constitutional, the battles, arms, dress, organisation and so on.Most of them are scholarly, long and very detailed, and intended for readers who require such knowledge. On the other hand most books used in schools are lacking in detail, and in many cases refer to the main battles of Edgehill,Newbury,Marston Moor,Naseby,Dunbar and Worcester, the minor battles and campaigns being largely ignored. This book is intended to bridge the gap and to present a comprehensive picture of the war, covering all the battles, actions and engagements in enough detail to make the background for the battles and their effec on the war understandable. It is hoped that it will paint a picture and tell the story of a very troubled period of English history, dominated by two implacable idealists,King Charles I and Oliver Cromwell. In Extremis - THE LIFE OF LAURA RIDING.

Imprint: LONDON.HAMISH HAMILTON,1993.
Edition: UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Very light shelf-wear to top edge dw/dj. 8vo,478pp includes b/w illus, index, notes and bibliography. Here is the first major biography of this century's most important poets and one of the most influential figures in British-American literary history. In her poetry, essays and public statements,Laura Riding tackled Freud, feminism, communism, language and belief, sensuality and the coming of age of the American dream. In her personal relationships she was often at the centre of a circle of friends and artists; her associations included writers as diverse as Hart Crane, Gertrude Stein, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm Crowley, Allen Tate and Robert Penn Warren.During a thirteen year relationship with Robert Graves, the two writers produced an astonishing range of work.Together they launched the New Criticism.Laura Riding, who died in 1991 at the age of ninety was the frequent subject of outrageous rumour and intense controversy. She has been portrayed as a meglomaniac, a sexual libertine, a femme fatale, even a witch. In this brilliantly original biography Baker considers Laura Riding in the context of her background, her times and her work and removes the layers of conjecture, bias and sometimes sheer nonsense that have distorted her life, reputation and sense of achievement. The result is a biography of revelation, reassessment and restoration. First published in 1903,this is a long awaited reprint of the classic study of the earliest years of walking, rock climbing and caving in the Peak District and its neighbourhood. It recounts the exploits of the renowned Kyndwr Club,a group of Sheffield and Derby walkers and climbers, which was founded in 1900. Ernest Baker led the Derby contingent, and this is his highly acclaimed personal account of some of the club's most notable early expeditions, including many first ascents - and descents - of the Peak's crag and cave challenges. Baker's highly descriptive accounts, especially those of crossing the high, and at the time forbidden, moorlands, have become classics in Peakland literature. In addition to the descriptions of the club's regular trespasses over Kinder Scout and Bleaklow, there are also accounts of ascents of Cratcliff Tor,Robin Hood's Stride and Cromford Black Rocks and some of the earliest descents of Eldon Hole, the Bottomless Pit in Speedwell Cavern, with maps and plans. Enest A. Baker was born in Bath in 1869 and gained a First Class Honours degree in English at London University in 1896.He gained his MA in Classics in 1898 and was awarded a doctorate in Literature in 1908. In 1893 he had been appointed librarian at the Midland Railway Institute at Derby, later moving to Wallasey and finally Woolwich. He was also author of 'A Descriptive Guide to the Best Fictions',and editor of Half-forgotten Books. He married Louise Gardiner, who died in 1932,and the couple had two sons and two daughters.Baker died in January 1941 at Blackheath, and his obituary in the 'Derbyshire Advertiser' stated: 'Baker was autocratic and intolerant of incompetence or indolence in either work or recreation, and did not seek to obtain popularity with the average man.'
