DeSalle, Rob and Lindley, David
The Science of Jurassic Park and the Lost World or, How To Build A Dinosaur

Imprint: London, HarperCollins, 1997
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First UK edition, First Printing. A clean and unmarked copy apart from a small name and date to front endpaper and age darkening to page edges with complete dustjacket. DeSalle is a curator at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and in 1992 isolated the then oldest known fragment of DNA whilst Lindley is a science editor. Following on the much vaunted Jurassic Park film which combined science with literary license, the authors explore the reality of getting a complete genetic blueprint of a long extinct creature and why a real Jurassic Park would have to be more than the film's 22 square mile preserve, more likely an area as big as the state of Connecticut. Illustrated with diagrams and photographs. D4C. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hard Cover. Jacket: Very Good

Devas, Nicolette
Susannah's Nightingales

Imprint: London, Collins and Harvill Press, 1978
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Very Good + unmarked copy with complete dustjacket. The author had no formal education as her father Francis Macnamara, Irish landowner, poet and friend of Yeats believed that women were here to adorn life and give comfort to men's needs, and she and her two sisters were brought up by their mother, mostly in the New Forest. Apart from a close friendship with the Augustus John circle, their neighbours, they lived in considerable isolation. Nicolette went to the Slade School of Art subsequently marrying Anthony Devas, the painter, and during the war started to write, her mother's Irish-French background influencing her. This book took four years to research and write and is a follow on to her autobiography 'Two Flamboyant Fathers', which spotlights the French forbears alluded to in her autobiography. 18 illustrations and a map. *** NOT EX LIB *** *** NOT BOOK CLUB **** B2B. Disraeli, Benjamin and Sarah
A Year at Hartlebury or The Election

Imprint: London, John Murray, 1983
Edition: First Thus
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Very Good+ unmarked copy which has a small blind embossed personal stamp to front endpaper, a corner crease to top of one page and a little light foxing to closed edges with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 221 pages. Appendixes by Ellen Henderson and John P. Matthews. The revelation that a long-forgotten novel first published anonymously in 1834 is the work of Benjamin Disraeli and his sister Sarah is an exciting literary event. Newly discovered letters between brother and sister prove without doubt that it was written jointly by them. We do not have to look far for the reason for their secrecy. The vividly described election which forms the centrepiece of the story is clearly based on Disraeli's recent experiences as an unsuccessful candidate in two elections at High Wycombe. The hero of the story, Aubrey Bohun has, like Disraeli, recently returned from mysterious travels in the East, but unlike him has his own castle and an income of 30,000 pounds a year. **** NOT EX LIB **** 14. Lilli Jahn was prolific letter writer who studied medicine at Cologne, who wooed and won her protestant and fellow medical student, Ernest Jahn, by letter and in 1926 they married but in 1933, when Hitler took power, everything changed. Her husband was put under pressure from local Nazis to separate and then divorce her, which he eventually did, leaving Lilli and her five children unprotected. She was arrested and sent to Breitenau labour camp, angry, but she could still write to her children and these letters survive. She died at Auschwitz in June 1944.
