Simone De Beauvoir

Imprint: London, Sidgwick and Jackson, 1987
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a small light mark to top edge) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xv + 412 Pages. 18 illustrations. Simone Lucie Ernestine Marie Bertrand de Beauvoir, called Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986), dominated not only the French intelligentsia, but feminist thinking throughout the world for over fifty years. The paradox this presents in the context of her tireless devotion to Jean-Paul Sartre is only one of many confronted here in her first full-scale biography. The range of her work as a writer is enormous, but she may, however, be best known for her relaionship with Sartre. Despite the intensity of their shared passion - physical, political and intellectual - 'the beaver' and the great existentialist never committed themselves to marriage. She was with him when he died, but her importance to him was far more than that of a muse and a support. Indeed de Beauvoir conducted a long and mutually inspirational affair with the American writer and Nobel Prizewinner, Nelson Algren (in accordance with what Sartre descibed as 'contingent relationships). An unpublished correspondence of 1,682 letters betwee those two has been released to the authors of this book. They reveal as much about de Beauvoir and her friends - Camus, Picasso, Genet and Giacometti, as well as Sartre - as they do of a profoundly sensual relationship. **** NOT EX LIB **** **** A HEAVY VOLUME OF 0.872 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST **** B2E. Fuller, Steve
Science

Imprint: Buckingham, Open University Press, 1997
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy in laminated boards (Fine apart from a mark left from removal of a label to lower spine and very small indentation to front side. viii + 159 pages. What qualifies such seemingly disparate disciplines as paleontology, high energy physics, industrial chemistry and genetic engineering as 'sciences', and hence worthy of sustained public interest and support? In this innovative and controversial introduction to the social character of scientific knowledge, Professor Steve Fuller argues that if these disciplines share anything at all, it is more likely to be the way they strategically misinterpret their own history than any privileged access to the nature of reality. The book features a report written in the persona of a Martian anthropologist who systematically compares religious and scientific institutions on earth, only to find that science does not necessarily live up to its own ideals of rationality. Fuller highlights science's multicultural nature through a discussion of episodes in which the West's own understanding of science has been decisively affected by its encounters with Islam and Japan. Tamsen - A Novel of the Tragic Journey of the Donner Party and the Heroism of an Extraordinary Woman

Imprint: New York, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1983
Edition: First
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Gold title on quarter cloth and brown boards which have some marks to lower front. Internally very clean and unmarked. Dustjacket is VG with a mark to back and is not price clipped. 431 pages. Map endpapers of the Route of the Donner Party. The story of the Donner Party is one of the most calamitous and troubling in the history of the American West. In October of 1846 a party of 79 men, women and children under the leadership of George Donner attempted to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains to California. Trapped by early snows, 35 of them perished. Those who survived sustained life by consuming the flesh of their dead comrades. This account of their ordeal makes liberal use of the mechanisms of fiction, but at no point does it intentionally depart rom the evidence preserved by history. 22. Book Condition: Very Good.
