In Search of Scottish Ancestry

Imprint: London, Phillimore, 1973
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a neat name, address and date to front pastedown and a few small ticks to some items in the appendix) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 252 pages. Following the success of his earlier book, In Search of Ancestry, the author seeks to guide the Scottish family researcher from the time he is led by curiosity to make tentative enquiries from aged aunts and uncles to the time when he is far back in the centuries immersed in an absorbing and often lifetime hobby. But the path of the Scottish genealogist differs considerably from that of the English searcher since Scotland for many centuries had its distinct history and, even more important, had its own legal system. The latter results in the existence of many records which have no counterpart in England and Wales. The book therefore provides invaluable information to conduct research. C3A. Marked for Death - The First War in the Air

Imprint: London, Head of Zeus, 2015
Edition: First
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. An As New copy in an As New dustjacket which is not price clipped. First Edition, First Printing. 356 pages. 34 illustrations. Little more than 10 years after the first powered flight, aircraft were pressed into service in World War I. Nearly forgotten in the war's massive overall death toll, some 50,000 aircrew would die in the combatant nations' fledgling air forces. The romance of aviation had a remarkable grip on the public imagination, propaganda focusing on gallant air 'aces' who become national heroes. The reality was horribly different. Marked for Death debunks popular myth to explore the brutal truths of wartime aviation: of flimsy aircraft and unprotected pilots who had no parachutes; of burning 19-year-olds falling screaming to their deaths; of pilots freezing and disorientated as they flew across enemy lines at 15,000 feet. James Hamilton-Paterson also reveals how four years of war produced profound changes both in the aircraft themselves and in military attitudes and strategy. By 1918 it was widely accepted that domination of the air above the battlefield was crucial to military success, a realization that would change the nature of warfare for ever. 16. Imprint: London, Jonathan Cape, 1988
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xv + 304 pages. Compilation by Brian Hammond based on his personal collection and theatrical biography by Patrick O'Connor. Foreword by Elisabeth Welch. Josephine Baker was the first Black superstar, a thrilling presence, an innovative show-business pioneer. She was also a passionate humanitarian, a fighter, a survivor. This book celebrates every facet of her extraordinary life, from her poor childhood in St. Louis to her two spectacular last performances in London and Paris. Snapshots, posed studies and on-stage action-shots recall her life from the earliest days as a comic chorus-girl to her international fame. Portraits and caricatures by Paul Cohn and Kiffer mark her heyday in Paris; the admiring words of Colette and Hemingway, together with reminiscences of her children, accompany postcards, song sheets, posters and film stills reproduced for the first time in book form. Her brave work for the French Resistance and her twelve adopted children, the 'Rainbow Tribe', both have their place in Bryan Hammond's personal collection of memorabilia gathered over 25 years. Her story includes events that led to her being awarded the Légion d'Honneur, bankruptcy, her return to triumph in Paris, and a 21 gun salute funeral. Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped.ix + 241 pages. 53 illustrations. The book is very different to the usual book of theatrical memoirs and draws on a special part of her working life. In 1983 Sheila Hancock was invited to become an Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, so becoming only the second woman ever to be appointed at this level. She was also asked to lead the RSC's regional tour through Britain and Northern Ireland. From choosing the three plays and her company to selecting suitable venues and performing in and overseeing the productions, the result was a highly demanding and frequently humorous trip. On her return from the tour she was invited by Ian McKellen and Edward Petherbridge to join their National Theatre group as the director of Sheridan's The Critic, as part of a double-bill with Tom Stoppard's The Real Inspector Hound at the same time as playing in The Duchess of Malfi and as Madame Ranevskaya in Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. The book is an unusual and provocative personal insight into the world of present-day theatre, as well as one woman's odyssey as she travels the country. 2. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Hard Cover. The Diary of Jack the Ripper

Imprint: New York, Hyperion, 1993
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. FIRST US edition, FIRST PRINTING. A Fine unmarked copy with red title on quarter black cloth with black boards. Dustjacket is also Fine and not price clipped. 323 pages. There have been many theories as to the identity of Jack the Ripper and in this book the author believes that the answer may lie in the recently discovered diary found in Liverpool, England which states 'Yours truly, Jack the Ripper'. In it are grisly details of the murders of 1888-1889 and many clues that identify the murderer as James Maybrick, a cotton merchant from Liverpool who died in 1889 of suspected arsenic poisoning. In another celebrated case of the day Maybrick's wife Florie was accused of his murder but, as we read in the diary, his death was probably the result of his arsenic addiction. The diary is the subject of controversy and a report questioning it's authenticity is included along with a rebuttal. Illustrated by photographs and drawings and a facsimile of the diary. 21. The Curate's Lot - The Story of the Unbeneficed English Clergy

Imprint: London, John Baker, 1970
Edition: First
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with VG+ dustjacket. 224 pages. 36 plates and 3 figures in the text. Dr. Tindal Hart traces the fascinating history of the curate's lot from medieval times to the present day. On the whole it is a record of dedicated devotion to duty when, in the face of considerable hardship, often underpaid, half-starved and grossly humiliated, he struggled to keep his head above water and provide for what was often a large family. When young he was expected to play his part in local society without the means to do so, and when old and possibly disappointed was expected to hold his head highas a senior member of the community still performing the functions of his office. A reliable historical guide for church and social historian. R2. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Hard Cover. Jacket: Very Good

Hartcup, Adeline
Children of the Great Country Houses

Imprint: London, Sidgwick and Jackson, 1982
Edition: First
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 220 pages. 33 illustrations. 'I shall not be sorry when you come to keep the boys in order, for they have neither the respect of children, nor the good breeding of gentlemen, particularly Johnny, who talks of bad French novels and altogether wants repressing.' Thus Lady Stanley of Alderley wrote to her husband in 1852, highlighting some of the attitudes of the period. The lives of the children who lived in Britain's great country houses during the 19th century were a mixed scenario, including dysfunctional and remote families as well as close and loving ones. Drawing on diaries, letters, memoirs, and photo albums, Adeline Hartcup tells of nannies, tutors, and governesses, treats and punishments, and of ideas about God, death, and sex. She provides close-up portraits of five of the great families - Howards, Cecils, Russells, Lyttletons, and Gladstones - but also looks beyond the park gates, to the children who did not inherit the privileges that wealth and status conferred. 21. Character and the Novel

Internally there is a small neat name to front endpaper else very clean, tight and unmarked. Dustjacket has age darkening, minimal wear and is not price clipped. 222 pages. What do we mean when we say that a novel is 'true to life' and that its characters are 'real'? Most moderncritics have evaded this apparently simple question or have given conventional and inadequate answers. In seeking to explore the problem further, Professor Harvey has written a general study of the novel which attempts to relate the world of fiction to our sense of such basic notions as Time, Identity and Freedom. The argument is everywhere reinforced by the criticism of particular novels: Dickens, James, Mann and Sartre are extensively considered, but many other novelists are examined for the light they throw on the central problem of the ways in which Art represents, or trnsmutes Reality. **** NOT EX LIB **** 24. Rupert Brooke

Imprint: London, Faber and Faber, 1964
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Very Good+ unmarked copy which has a manufacturing fault of three pages which have not been cut properly on the right hand margin resulting in these being proud of the other pages. Dustjacket has a little wear to edges and age darkening and is not price clipped. 557 pages. 39 illustrations. Second impression April 1964 (first was also 1964). Rupert Brooke is perhaps the only figure of the early 20th century who has so far remained without a full-length biography. The short memoir by Edward Marsh introducing the first collected edition of poems has long been acknowledged as little more than a preliminary sketch. It was natural that Christopher Hassall should turn his attention to Marsh's friend as a sequel to his Life of Edward Marsh. As one of Brooke's three literary trustees he had special advantages for the task, which he completely revised shortly before his untimely death in April 1963. The material available on Rupert Brooke, which included a large collection of letters made by Sir Geoffrey Keynes, reveals a man far more complex and actively involved in the movements of his time than has been inferred from the current image of the young Apollo. He emerges as a wit, a scholar deeply read, a devoted partisan of the Socialist movement, a focal point of more than one aspect of the anti-Victorian revolt, and the protagonist in a passionare misadventure. **** NOT EX LIB **** PLEASE NOTE: A HEAVY VOLUME OF 0.986 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST 302.
