Hauser, Thomas with the Cooperation of Muhammad Ali
Muhammad Ali In Perspective

Imprint: San Francisco, Collins, 1996
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Softback

4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy. A large format volume of 176 pages. Illustrated throughout with photographs. Foreword by Muhammad Ali. It wasn't easy doing what Ali did in Atlanta. But this is a man who, all his life has come up with one incredibly gutsy performance after another. There was no wy he could beat Sonny Liston. So he went out and beat Sonny Liston. There was no way he would give up his title. So as an act of principle he gave up the heavyweight championship of the world. He beat George Foreman, when everyone knew he couldn't. He won the heavyweight crown for a third time, against Leon Spinks, when he was too old to win. Each time the world thought Ali was out of miracles, he performed another miracle. That's Muhammad Ali, In Perspective: and what you had in Atlanta was a wonderful reaffirmation of just how much Muhammad Ali means to the world. Three billion people were watching. Three billion people were in love with one man. Three billion people, even if it was just for a moment, had all the hate and petty prejudices removed from their hearts, and felt nothing but love. That's a miracle. PLEASE NOTE: A HEAVY VOLUME OF 0.96 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST 1. Book Condition: Near Fine. Binding: Soft Cover. Jacket: No Jacket

Havardi, Jeremy
Falling To Pieces - Making Sense of Self-Deception and the Divided Mind

Imprint: Lewes, East Sussex, The Book Guild, 2004
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine complete dustjacket. A rigorous work of philosophy which takes as its subject one of the most common forms of irrational behaviour in human beings. Self-deception has been much written about from a philosophical point of view, but, according to the author, has never been adequately explained or rebutted. Through cogent analysis of key texts, he demonstrates why so many previous attempts to dismiss the notion of self-deception as being ontologically impossible fall short of explaining away a form of irrationality that is familiar to most of us. He also considers the significance of Freud's theories for the phenomenon, where psychology might appear to be the most obvious tool for explaining it. 309. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Hard Cover. Hawkins, Desmond
Shelley's First Love - The Love Story of Percy Bysshe Shelley and Harriet Grove

Imprint: London, Kyle Cathie, 1992
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed by Author

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on title page 'Inscribed by the author with best wishes - Desmond Hawkins Sept, 1992'. A near Fine copy which has a small previous owner 's inscription to front endpaper with near Fine price clipped dustjacket. The story of Shelley's early love for his Wiltshire cousin, Harriet Grove, has suffered particularly, not only from a lack of first-hand information but from Thomas Love Peacock's uninformed prejudice and Thomas Jefferson Hogg's downright forgery of Shelley's correspondence (the pair had established the broad outlines of Shelleyan biography in 1858). The existence of Harriet Grove's diaries for 1809-10 had been known in 1898 but they were not accessible until a leading American collector, Carl Pforzheimer, authorised their publication in 1961. The discovery of Shelley's diary for 1810 and of Harriet's sister Charlotte for 1811, now published here for the first time, throws new light on a passionate teenage romance. 14 illustrations, 1 map and genealogical chart. **** NOT EX LIBRARY **** C3A. Hawthorne, Nigel
Straight Face - The Autobiography

Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. First edition, first printing. xi + 340 pages. 46 illustrations. In this exceptional autobiography, written throughout his long battle with cancer, and completed just a few days before he died, Nigel gives the most compelling, entertaining, and intimate portrait of his life. When he left South Africa for England as a young man, his success as an actor was never assured and owed much to his determination which saw him through the rigours of repertory stage management, understudy roles, and cleaning jobs until he won his biggest theatrical break in Joan Littlewood's production of 'Oh, What a Lovely War'. His major triumph in the Royal Shakespeare Company's 'Privates on Parade' led to even greater international success as Sir Humphrey Appleby in television's 'Yes, Minister'. **** NOT EX LIB **** A1D. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped.xiv + 221 pages. Foreword by Captain Morin Scott. Based on Edward Beck's diaries. Edward Beck was the author's maternal grandfather's uncle, and was a watch-keeper officer on merchant sailing ships trading in the 1820's. He made voyages to Quebec, the Antipodes and Calcutta. Besides the problems of seamanship his duties included victualling and rationing, which in voyages lasting five months or more could be difficult, as his diaries show. As well as keeping routine watches, he had to help the paying passengers and see to their welfare. In port, Beck had the job of supervising many of the tasks of repairing or replacing worn and damaged rigging. A vivid picture of what a seaman's life in a trading ship was like in the 1820's. 12. Ghost Girl - A True Story

Imprint: London, Macmillan, 1992
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which has one small crease to one inner flap. A true story of a young girl, Jadie, who is so wounded by events in her life that she believes that she is a ghost. An elective mute, her body is so contorted as to make her appear crippled and when her new teacher, the author, who specialises in disturbed children, persuades her to speak, Jadie explains that her posture is to 'keep my insides from falling out'. The child's preoccupation with strange cultish symbols and perverted sexual acts points to an interpretation that the author's colleagues are unable to accept and are the vividly described episodes the bleak truth or the tortured imaginings of a seriously disturbed child. A Domestic History of the Bank of England 1930-1960

Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy in red cloth boards with near Fine dustjacket. xv + 449 pages. 8 colour and 51 black and white illustrations. This book, which is based on the Bank of England's own mainly unpublished archives, describes the internal workings of the Bank from 1930 to 1960 under three Governors, Lord Norman, Lord Catto and Lord Cobbold. It contains much hitherto private information on the Bank's accounting methods and profitability, and on the note issue including bank note design. These decades were a period of enormous change, when its working methods (many dating back to its foundation in 1694) were radically updated and in some cases mechanised in a progression from handwritten ledgers to computers. New functions such as exchange control were put in place, help was given to many newly developed countries in setting up their own central banks, and many new buildings were erected. **** A HEAVY VOLUME OF 0.93 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST **** 21.
