Easter Island - The Mystery Solved

Imprint: London, Souvenir Press, 1989
Edition: First
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Very Good+ dustjacket which is not price clipped. A large format volume of 256 pages beautifully illustrated throughout in colour. Coloured map front endpapers. The book is the story of Thor Heyerdahl's love of mystery - and of an island and its people. Over 30 years ago, the man who did such important, pioneering work in Kon-Tiki wrote another book Aku-Aku about Easter Ispand. He was invited later to return to Easter Island and there confronted the conundrum of the famous haunting statues that stud the lovely island, massive and mysterious. How were they made? How were they moved? What did the natives mean when they had said, those many years earlier, that 'the statues walked'? 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is price clipped. 219 pages. 15 illustrations. Here is a galaxy of odd and wonderful characters: sycophants and time-servers, royal lovers and intriguers, Chief Sewers and Grooms of the Stole. In the tradition of John Aubrey's Brief Lives Thomas Hinde invites us to share the public and private lives of some hundred characters at court - from Eudo, Chief Steward to William the Conqueror, to Frederick Ponsonby, George V's Keeper of the Privy Purse. Geoffrey Chaucer, Nell Gwyn, Barbara Villiers, Jane Shore, Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Thomas Wyatt, Robert Carr, Sir Thomas Overbury, Fanny Burney, Abigail Hill, Talbot Edwards and the Earl of Rochester: these celebrated courtiers jostle with others less famous to form a procession of royal favourites; harlots and poets, adventurers and dwarfs, dukes and orange sellers. Most extracted titles and wealth or political power from their patron, others slipped from favour to rot in prison, or languish in genteel obscurity, whilst many Tudor courtiers had their careers terminated by the axe. **** NOT EX LIB **** A1D. Hoagland, Mahlon
Toward The Habit of Truth - A Life In Science

Edition: First Edition

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Stated First edition, first printing. A Fine unmarked copy with VG+ price clipped dustjacket. The discovery of the double helical structure of DNA by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953 revolutionised our view of life, of the genetic structure of living things; but it was, in a sense, only the first door to be opened. A number of mysteries remained, among them the question of how the information contained in our genes is translated into growth; what, in other words, was the machinery that converted genetic information into living substance? This discovery, transfer RNA, was the great scientific achievement of the author at Harvard, but it was not Mahlon's only achievement. He later came to head and carry forward the research of the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, a remarkable institution founded by his father, where earlier the birth control pill was developed, the other twin subject of the book. **** NOT EX LIB **** 13. Everybody Who Was Anybody - A Biography of Gertrude Stein

Imprint: London, Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1975
Edition: First Edition

4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. A large format volume of xii + 244 pages. 100 black and white illustrations, 8 colour plates. Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) soon became aware that she was destined to 'create the twentieth century'. Brought up in Europe and the new frontier state of California, Gertrude never lost the sense of being a pioneer. In 1903 she moved to Paris and two years later bought her first Matisse, the notorious Femme au Chapeau, the most ridiculed work of the scandalous 'Fauve' exhibition. In 1905 Gertrude also met and began to buy the work of Picasso. With his portrait of her, a work seminal in the development of Cubism, and with her own writing of Three Lives, both in 1906, Gertrude Stein began to take her place at the centre of a group of artists and writers whose works were among the most important of the century. By the outbreak of World War I Gertrude, with her brothers Leo and Michael, had amassed the most important collection of modern art in the world. After the war Gertrude became mentor to several of the best known American writers, among them Ernest Hemngway. By the time of her death, Gertrude Stein had become a legend - she had been painted, sculpted and photographed by the most famous artists of her time. Her apartments at rue de Fleurus, and later at rue Christine, were landmarks in Paris. The book tells the story of the public personality and the deeply serious writer behind. It recounts the development and significance of her complex relationship with her brother Leo, with Alice B. Toklas and with Picasso, as well as her artistic relationships with the Cubists and the writers of the Lost Generation and her profoundly symbolic relationship with America, with France, with 'inside and outside reality', with personality and the nature of genius. God's Secret Agents - Queen Elizabeth's Forbidden Priests and the Hatching of the Gunpowder Plot

Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped.vii + 445 pages. 40 illustrations. As darkness fell on the evening of Friday, 28 October 1588, just weeks after the defeat of the Spanish Armada, two young Englishmen landed in secret on a Norfolk beach - they were Jesuit priests - and their aim was to achieve by force of argument what the Armada had failed to do by force of arms - return England to the Catholic Church. Eighteen years later their mission had been shattered by the actions of a small group of terrorists, the Gunpowder Plotters; they themselves had been accused of designing 'that most horrid and hellish conspiracy'; and the future of every Catholic they had come to save depended on the silence of an Oxford joiner, builder of priest-holes, being tortured in the Tower of London. Using contemporary documents, the book pieces together a deadly game of cat-and-mouse as Elizabeth and her ministers fought to defend the State and English Catholics struggled to defend their souls, and follows the priests - God's Secret Agents - from their schooling on the Continent, through their perilous return journeys and lonely lives in hiding, to their gruesome deaths on the scaffold. **** NOT EX LIB **** L.
