The Tiananmen Papers

Imprint: London, Little Brown, 2001
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xlv + 513 pages. Map endpapers and 3 other maps. Afterword by Orville Schell, Dean of Graduate Studies in Journalism, University of California, Bekeley. The events of the Beijing Spring of 1989 were among the most momentous of China's tumultuous 20th century. What began as peaceful memorial demonstrations following the death of of popular reform leader Hu Yaobang soon developed into a massive pro-democracy movement, with Tiananmen Square its focal point. The book offers an astonishing account of the events - from inside the heart of the Politburo itself. It consists of excerpts from approximately 1,000 documents detailing the highest-level processes of decision-making during that fateful period, and from records of their meetings and private conversations, we learn what the leaders said among themselves as they discussed the unfolding events - how they debated the students' motives, whom they identified as their main enemies, and why they waited as long as they did before ordering the troops to move in. Perhaps most dramatic of all, we have definitive evidence of who voted how on key issues, and their reasons, given in their own words. We learn also how Jiang Zemin came to power, who chose him and why. **** A HEAVY VOLUME OF 1.04 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST **** 16. Book Condition: Fine. A Very Good+ copy. Dustjacket has age darkening and marks and is not price clipped. viii + 142 pages. It has often been said that the only time bishops have been popular in England is when seven of them were sent to the Tower by James the Second. Whether this is true or not, bishops have always come in for a good deal of censure and misunderstanding. They often speak wise words which go unreported, but should they speak a foolish one it receives wide and unfavourable publicity. Most Anglicans seem to like their own diocesan - 'our bishop' as they call him - but they are as apt as non-Anglicans to be suspicious of 'the bishops'. With these considerations in mind, the Bishop of Llandaff has edited this book about bishops, containing a number of essays, some theological, some popular in tone, intended to give people an idea of what bishops do and are and of the problems which confront them. The contributors are nearly all bishops, and include the Archbishop of Liverpool and the Metropolitan of Myra. **** NOT EX LIB **** R1. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hard Cover. Jacket: Good

Loades, David
Henry VIII - Court, Church and Conflict

Imprint: Kew, Surrey, The National Archives, 2007
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. An As New copy with an As New dustjacket. 240 pages. 30 illustrations. From Renaissance prince to bloated monarch, Henry VIII dominated his country and court for almost 40 years. Destined for the centre stage of Europe, united with the royal line of Aragon, Henry's dramatic break with the Church of Rome led his kingdom into years of turmoil. Yet the headstrong monarch was also a shrewd operator who managed the powerful personalities around him to build one of the most momentous, and controversial, of English reigns. Professor Loades's book explores the fluctuating, often fraught relationship between king and court, his Church and his people, revealing the strategies that bolstered Henry's power, from the shaping of his royal image to the treatment of key players such as Wolsey, Cromwell, Fisher and More.
