Moral Teaching in the Primitive Church

Imprint: New Jersey, Paulist Press, 1968
Binding: Softback

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Very Good+ clean, tight and unmarked copy. All too often the fathers of the Church and their teachings have been presented in terms of systematic analyses that have stripped them of their humanity and appeal for the modern Christian. Fr. Murphy breaks away from this too rationalistic approach to take a new look at the fathers and their teachings. Beginning with an analytic survey, he traces the growth of Christian consciousness through the post-apostolic years, and from this survey goes on to treat the documents of the early Church - the Didache, one of the earliest texts, The Shepherd of Hermas, the letters of Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, the writings of Irenaeus, and many others. **** NOT AN EX LIBRARY COPY **** R8. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director icki Myron. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of love. For the next 19 years he never stopped charming the people of Spencer, Iowa with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility (for a cat), and, above all, his sixth sense about who neededhim most. When she is kidnapped, the crime is reported to Marshal Guarnaccia by her daughter, who may have been the intended victim. Kidnapping is almost a second business for the Sardinians nominally engaged in raising sheep in the Tuscan hills. They inhabit a vast wilderness where a victim can be hidden away forever, and where searching for her will be quickly spotted. The government's official policy is not to permit the payment of ransom. But if the money is not paid the kidnappers cannot let their victim go free. It would set a bad example.... D4C. Book Condition: Near Fine. Binding: Hard Cover. Jacket: Near Fine

Under the banner of their god Amon warriors like Tuthmosis III and Ramesses II pushed the borders of their empire deep into Nubia to the south and successfully challenged the Mitannians and Hittites for control of the Near East. The wealth of these new territories enabled them to build some of the most grandiose monuments ever erected. D4B. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Hard Cover. Jacket: Near Fine

Newman, Bernard
Tito's Yugoslavia

Imprint: London, The Travel Book Club, 1952
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Brown title on yellow boarde which are unmarked with no wear. Internally there is light foxing to closed edges and endpapers else very clean, tight and unmarked. Dustjacket has wear to top edge and is not price clipped. 269 pages. 9 sketch maps. The author is one of the most knowledgeable and perceptive of world travellers and commentators. He has an uncanny knack of rooting out the trouble spots ahead of trouble and of foretelling developments. He has travelled every country on Europe and many in Africa, Asia and America, met all manner of personalities from Roosevelt to Hitler, and has a wide experience of war, overground and underground, and is the author of over 60 books. 'All Yugoslavia was laughing over the story of the man who, soon after the war was over, shouted down with Stalin and was jailed for four years. On his release he was naturally determined not to make the same mistake. So he shouted long live Stalin - and was promptly jailed for another four years. The story may be apocryphal, but it illustrates a modern and dramatic phase of Yugoslavia's eventful history. Yugoslavia has seldom been far from the headlines since the days of 1918 when the Serbs embraced their cousins the Croats and Slovenes. (subsequently, of course, things developed much further than the author could imagine writing in the early 1950's). **** NOT EX LIB **** A1D. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hard Cover. Home Run - Escape From Nazi Europe

Imprint: London, Viking, 2007
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with VG+ dustjacket which is not price clipped. First edition, first printing. xxix + 514 pages. 30 illustrations and 1 map. Throughout the Second World War, thousands of Allied servicemen found themselves cut off behind the lines in Nazi-occupied Europe: soldiers stranded on beaches after the chaotic evacuation of Dunkirk, airmen flying operations against the Germans blasted out of the sky by flak and fighters. Once, they had been part of units that offered cameraderie and protection, but now they were alone and on the run. Some made solitary treks through hundreds of miles of enemy territory, dodging patrols and search parties, and others attempted precarious sea crossings in stolen boats, whilst many placed their lives in the hands of brave civilians who risked the wrath of a brutal regime. The prospect of imprisonment and torture haunted every step the evaders and their helpers took, and for all it was a matter of life and death. The authors tell the dramatic story of the heroes who made it home .... and those who did not. **** A HEAVY VOLUME OF 1.1 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST **** **** NOT EX LIB **** A1B. Prospects of England - Two Thousand Years Seen Through Twelve English Towns

Imprint: London, Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1989
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. A large format volume of 160 pages. Travelling together, author Adam Nicolson and illustrator Peter Morter have visited twelve small towns across the breadth of England, from Weymouth on the South coast to Alnwick, almost on the borders of Scotland. Each of these towns 'has enjoyed a moment when it has come into its own, when the forces at work have brought something to fruition and have given the place its enduring personality'. These 'shaping moments' - a different point in history for each successive town - are strung together in the book to form a continuous chain of town life from the planning of Roman Chichester to the radically nostalgic ideals of the Garden City in early 20th century Letchworth. The result is a remarkable portrait of small town England, with the triumphs of provincial architecture, rich with the details of everyday life, both now and in the past, lavishly illustrated with detailed plans and architectural drawings. The towns are Chichester, Sussex; Glastonbury, Somerset; Alnwick, Northumberland; Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire; Woodbridge, Suffolk; Blandford Forum, Dorset; Monmouth, Gwent; Weymouth, Dorset; Buxton, Derbyshire; Whitby, North Yorkshire; Hebden Bridgem West Yorkshire; Letchworth, Hertfordshire. **** A LARGE HEAVY VOLUME OF 1.0 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST ***** 20B. Restoration - The Rebuilding of Windsor Castle

Imprint: London, Michael Joseph in Association with the Royal Collection, 1997
Edition: First
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A near Fine copy (fine apart from a very small label removal to front endpaper) with VG dustjacket which is price clipped. 280 pages. Illustrated throughout with plan drawings and colour photographs. Windsor Castle is the oldest continuously occupied palace in the world. As bad luck would have it, the fire that swept through the Castle on 20 November 1992 destroyed or severely damaged nine of the finest state apartments and more than 100 other rooms. In this book Adam Nicolson details the Royal Household's immediate response and the choices that face it: what to restore and how to restore it. As the archaeologcal discoveries during the restoration made clear, few buildings in the world have had so much of such high quality poured into them over so many centuries. The Ian Nicolson Omnibus - The Log of the Maken; Sea-Saint; Building the St. Mary

Imprint: Hampshire, Ashford Press, 1986
Edition: First Thus
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket. 500 pages. 31 illustrations and drawings and diagrams in the text. In this collection you are offered a unique opportunity to experience Nicolson's unpredictable and unconventional lifestyle at first hand, and it proves his long-held philosophy of life; the 'great globe itself' can be yours; that you can throw off the chains and sail into the sunset towards adventure and freedom. In the Log of the Maken Nicolson joins a Canadian and a Norwegian to sail the 'Maken' from England to Canada via the Panama Canal. In the 'Sea-Saint' he tells how he hitch hiked from the West Coast of Canada to the East, searched for and discovered a 30 foot bare hull yacht, built and rigged her - the 'Sea-Saint' (now known as St. Elisabeth) - and his subsequent paassage home, without a dollar to his name. Finally Nicolson concentrates on building his own yacht - the 'St. Mary'. For this new collected edition, Nicolson has written the final chapter to Building the St. Mary - some 25 years after the original book was first published. **** A HEAVY VOLUME OF 0.85 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH MAY REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST **** C3A. The World is All Islands

Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from minor indentations to fore edge and one to spine) with near Very Good dustjacket. 292 pages. 1 map. Translated from the Danish by F. H. Lyon. Carl Nielsen and two other amateur sailors made plans to sail 36,000 miles round the world. The Nordkaperen, a two-masted schooner built in 1905, had to be stripped down to the keel because of wood-rot and rust. Hardly out of sight of the Danish coast, they found themselves being driven hrough a mine-field, while the engine refused to start. And so it continued throughout the voyage, wherever the three Danes went they seemed to have an infinite capacity for attracting the most exciting adventures. In mid-ocean they were struck again and again by gales and heavy seas. The rigging snapped, the sails were torn and in one frightening storm the boom cracked. Several times they found themselves aground on coral reefs. A1E. Book Condition: Near Fine. Binding: Hard Cover. Jacket: Very Good

Edition: First Edition
Binding: Softback

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Very Good+ unmarked copy which has a little creasing to front cover and to the corner of first page, some shelf marking to lower closed edge, internally Fine. 623 pages. Translated from the Spanish by Chris Brandt. Foreword by Howard Zinn. In the book Clara Nieto demonstrates that United States policy toward Latin America has been 'a coherent politics of intervention' set into motion by the Monroe Doctrine, accounting for aggression against Nicaragua and El Salvador, and the invasions of Grenada and Panama. Her history of U.S. policy toward Latin America is enriched by her extensive first-hand experience: As a member of the Colombian diplomatic corps., she was present at UN and OAS meetings where U.S. Cuba conflicts were addressed, and where negotiations betwee the U.S. and Latin America were hammered into place. The book provides an invaluable context for critically understanding both recent history, and the current dynamics and trajectory of U.S. forein policy toward its southern neighbours. Edition: First Edition

With this book Professor Ninkovich offers a striking examination of Woodrow Wilson's influence on 20th century US foreign policy. He argues that the Wilsonian outlook, far from being a crusading, utopian doctrine, was a creative, practical response to catastrophic great power wars that threatened to reverse the progressive course of modern history. He shows how Wilsonian 'crisis internationalism' guided US foreign relations through a century of global turbulence and made possible the emergence of today's globalizing society. 14.
