Irresistibly charming, and written with great humour, verve and belief in the power of the human spirit, the novel charts one man's eccentric odyssey through the three classic rituals that mark the progress of family life: a funeral, a christening and a wedding. Sir Michael Gough, patriarch of the beleaguered Gough family, is reduced to borrowing a leaky barn for his living quarters, a far cry from his family pile, Sitten Hall, which he was forced to 'gift' to the National Trust twenty three years earlier. Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is price clipped. 167 illustrations and map endpapers. Seaford is a paradox. It is a town by the sea but not really a seaside town. Lying on the coast between Brighton and Eastbourne, it was a prosperous Cinque Port and a Parliamentary constituency six centuries before the patronage of the Prince Regent and the Duke of Devonshire led to the development of the little villages of Brighthelmstone and Bourne into sophisticated resorts. Seaford's aristocratic patrons were the Pelhams and when the Duke of Newcastle used the town as one of his pocket boroughs in the 18th century his patronage was in the form of 'jobs for the boys' in return for votes at the election. This ancient port, parish, town and borough has seen days of greater importance and, at times, made its rough and rumbustious mark upon history, as this book reveals. 11. Book Condition: Fine. Navigating Britain's Coastline - Portland to Dover

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Very Good + unmarked copy which has foxing to endpapers with VG dustjacket which has fading to spine. Presented in rectangular format. One of the main problems of small craft navigation is identification of landmarks and coastal features. Charts, though vital, give only the vaguest idea of the actual appearance of the coast. This book provides a picture of the coast, to scale, from the direction most commonly used. It consists of a series of views drawn from a distance varying between half a mile and four miles out to sea. Beneath each view is a simplified chart of the corresponding area, and guidelines between view and chart pinpoint all the useful identification features. A1F. Book Condition: Very Good. Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine non price clipped dustjacket. Mayor Bert 'Slasher' Harris was used to evading the opposition, as the legendary wing forward for Ockam Cutters, his was the victorious team which had brought home the FA Cup years before. His finest hour was spent on the old Town Hall balcony above a sea of beaming fans, so to him it was the most natural thing to repeat it for the 57 Club charity raffle. Ignoring the town clerk, police, mayoral protocol and any other reasonable argument, Mayor Harris announced the prize-winning tickets in reverse order. Riot ensued, aggrieved ticket holders and a sea of angry populace demanded fair play, and in a tide of violence they laid waste to civic property, personnel and, most worrying of all, stealing the council's unique treaure, the seven razors of Ockam. Una Troubridge - The Friend of Radclyffe Hall

Imprint: London, Jonathan Cape, 1984
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xviii + 340 pages. 30 illustrations. When Una Troubridge (1887-1963) died at the age of 76 part of the inscription she had instructed her executors to put on her coffin read: Una Vincenzo Troubridge, The Friend of Radclyffe Hall. It is clear that Una considered that the most significant thing she had done in her life was to dedicate herself body and soul from the age of 28 to 'John' Radclyffe Hall, as lover, companion, comrade in arms, secretary and, latterly, nurse. For this she effectively relinquished husband, child, mother, friends and social approval. It is a love story as compelling as the Brownings and, strangely, little has been written about either of the central characters. What we know about the author of The Well of Loneliness has come from Una, while Una has until now remained an enigma. Yet she was a gifted singer, the only sculptor for whom Nihinsky ever sat and Colette's first English translator. Born Margot Elena Gertrude Taylor, she was nicknamed Una by her family as a child and chose the middle name Vincenzo herself, after her Florentine relatives. She married Captain Ernest Troubridge in October 1908; they had one daughter, Andrea. Ernest Troubridge rose to the rank of admiral during and immediately after the First World War, and Una gained her title when Admiral Troubridge was knighted in June 1919, although they were already legally separated at the time.
