8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a very small crease to the corner tips of two pages) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. Second impression. 342 pages. 1 map. The thrilling novel continues the story of Marcus Valerius Aquila, fugitive from the Rome of Emperor Commodus, and his part in the war for Hadrian's Wall. The Battle of the Lost Eagle saved Hadrian's Wall. but the new governor of Britannia must stamp out the rebellion of the northern tribes or risk losing the province. Rampaging south with sword and flame under the command of their murderous chieftain Calgus, they have stretched his forces to the limit. For Marcus - now simply Centurion Corvus of the 1st Tungrian cohort - the campaign has become doubly dangerous. As reinforcements flood into Britannia he is surrounded by new officers with no reason to protect him from the emperor's henchmen, and death could result from a careless word as easily as from an enemy spear. Worse, one of them is close on his heels. While training two centuries of Syrian archers to survive a barbarian charge and then take the fight back to their enemy, the new prefect of the 2nd Tungrians has discovered his secret, and only a miracle can save Marcus and the men who protect him from disgrace and death. Following on from 'Wounds of Honour', Anthony Riches combines meticulous research with brilliant storytelling to capture the authentic feel of what life was like for the Roman Army in a brutal war with a remorseless enemy. 15. The Test of Courage - A Biography of Michel Thomas

Imprint: London, Century, 1999
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not priceclipped. xi + 402 pages. 33 illustrations. Map endpapers. The story of Michel Thomas reads like a thriller in which adventur and heartbreak combine to produce a unique form of wisdom. Today he teaches languages to ghetto kids, heads of industry and movie stars in a matter of days, regarded as a miracle worker with a magical gift for unlocking the secret powers of the mind. This unique understanding was gained under extreme circumstances. Stateless in Vichy France at the beginning of the Second World War, he was incarcerated and starved in a concentration camp at the foot of the Pyrenees, forced into slave labour in a coal mine in Provence, and avoided being sent to Auschwitz by hiding within the confines of a deportation camp for six weeks. He escaped death to join the Secret Army of the Resistance. He was arrested and interrogated by Klaus Barbie, Butcher of Lyon, whom he deceived into releasing him, and was later re-arrested by the Gestapo and tortured. He held out by entering a psychological state in which he no longer registered pain, surviviving to later rejoin the Resistance. At the end of the war he became a Nazi hunter, working for American Counter Intelligence, posing as a Nazi himself to infiltrate and expose underground networks of the SS. He captured important war criminals and was a witness in the trial of Klaus Barbie. 23. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Hard Cover. Jacket: Near Fine

Edition: First
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine price clipped dustjacket. 530 pages. 42 illustrations. Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) was a comic writer of genius best known for Bertie Wooster and his omniscient manservant Jeeves; the pig-loving Lord Emsworth - and a regiment of aunts and butlers. But although Wodehouse and his work have become indissolubly part of the English language and its literature, the writer himself is enigmatic. His life, notorious for one historic blunder during the Second World War, remains remarkably unexplored. Based on research throughout Britain, Europe and the United States the book goes deep beneath the surface of Wodehouse's extraordinary career, and reveals as never before the fascinating complexity of a writer who liked to maintain, against all the evidence, that his life was 'a breeze from start to finish'. C-Six is the C stairway on 6 deck, positioned, as most ships' hospitals are, directly on the waterline at the centre of the ship to afford maximum stability and comfort, hence ironically but appropriately the address of the world most prestigious sick bay. These memoirs contain, naturally, medical emergencies, tales such as dentistry on a celebrity drunk, stories of chronic seasickness, acute appendicitis, drownings and a coronary in the casino. There is a large social side to his duties as he hosts a table slightly lower down from the Captain's, and his anecdotes about passengers are both affectionate and amusing. This is convenient for Edward as he can keep an eye on Verity while investigating the sadistic murder of his dentist, Eric Silver, whose death has a Henley connection. Silver had recently confided in Edward that he suspected three elderly patients of his had been murdered: an old general appeared to have drunk himself to death with a fine bottle of Clos des Mouches, A lady was poisoned by a new insecticide she was trying, and a beekeeper was stung to death by his bees. All three lived near Henley. So Edward goes to stay with an old friend who has just inherited a title and a property in the pretty town on the Thames and begins to follow the trail. The Manipulators - A Conspiracy to Make Us Buy

Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine price clipped dustjacket. 310 pages. First edition, first printing. The author picks up from where Vance Packard, the author of The Hidden Persuaders, left off, to explore the multi billion pound global business of advertising. He unveils the new sciences that are being devloped to turn the ads we see into magic bullets which can penetrate our defences, how modern retailers are following hot on the advertisers' heels with their own sleight-of-hand to snap off any lingering resistance to buy, how we unknowingly contribute to our own commercial seduction, how the worst is yet to come, as the internet and television combine to create a monster whose sole function will be to pick us off, one by one, and make us buy. An incisive and ultimately disturbing investigation of the way advertising has shaped our world today. **** NOT EX LIB **** 12. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Hard Cover. Jacket: Fine

The Menuhins - A Family Odyssey

Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with VG dustjacket which is not price clipped. First Edition. 256 pages. 27 illustrations. The Menuhins is the story of a miraculous family of great musicians and religious leaders. It is told here for the first time by the nephew of Yehudi Menuhin, the great violinist. Elements of the story have been told before, but few outside the family have known the true dimensions of the Menuhin miracle, for the Menuhin children were not the first prodigies in their family's unique history. Foe centuries the Menuhin line had been producing geniuses, yet the elder Menuhins witheld the details of Yehudi's exotic lineage. There was The MaHaRal, a great rabbi and the creator of the legendary Golem; Schneur Zalman, the founder of Chabad Hassidism and the composer of powerful religious songs; and all the great Schneersohns, the hereditary first family of the Lubavicher Hassids. Although Rolfe, the son of Yaltah Menuhin, often focuses on his famous uncle, he has ventured behind the Menuhin public image with an intimacy that only a Menuhin could bring to this family portrait. **** NOT EX LIB **** 16.
