Stories on Paper and Glass - Pioneering Photography at National Geographic

Imprint: Washington, National Geographic, 2001
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with VG+ dustjacket. A large format volume of 256 pages. National Geographic published its very first photograph in July 1890 - an event that down the line would cause a bit of furore at the Society, where a few scholars continued to maintain that photographs had no place in a scientific journal. Fortunately 19th century ideas of scholarly publication were swept away in a growing flood of images. Many of the 250 photographs in the book have never been published before. Selected from the Society's vast image Collection, they range from all over the world and take us from pioneering days when cameras were cumbersome novelties or rich men's toys up to the end of the legendary career of Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor, son-in-law of the Society's second president, Alexander Graham Bell. An inspired editor, publisher, photographer, and collector in his own right. Grosvenor retired from National Geographic in the 1950'safter more than half a century as its editor. This book is a tribute to his career. PLEASE NOTE: A HEAVY VOLUME OF 1.78 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST B2F. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Hard Cover. Edvard Munch (1863-1944)

Imprint: London, Phaidon Press, 1960
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 143 pages. 89 illustrations, including 23 in colour. Edvard Munch, the only Scandinavian artist to gain world renown, takes his place beside Van Gogh, Cézanne and Ensor as one of the founders of Expressionism. At the turn of the century he abandoned the concept that art must catch the fleeting, outward impressions of nature, and paved the way for an art which, as the author writes, 'enhances or transcends reality and endeavours to give visible form to general human values, eternal forces of life and the world of ideas'. Throughout his life Munch was greatly influenced by his literary contemporaries Ibsen and Strindberg and the world of his ideas, like that of the latter, was dominated by a preoccupation with the anguish of love and fear, sickness and death - themes which constantly recur in his canvases and graphic work. Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy which has age toning to closed edges with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xiv + 417 pages. 51 illustrations. The book includes the diary Alan Bennett kept during the production of his first play, Forty Years On, which starred Sir John Gielgud, together with hilarious accounts of the filming of his many television plays, notably An Englishman Abroad and a Private Function. The book brings together the talks, diaries and occasional journalism that he has written over 20 years or so, mostly for the BBC or the London Review of Books. Lafayette - Hero of Two Worlds

Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xvii + 356 pages. 30 illustrations. First edition, first printing. This witty biography, much of which is based on previously unaccessible materials, is the first life of the Marquis de Lafayette that gives equal treatment to his American and French experiences. In the war for American Independence, the 21 year old was a stubborn, tenacious, and ultimately victorious commander, the favourite of George Washington. Returning to Paris, he was soon caught up in the 1789 Revolution, first as its champion, then as guardian of the King, finally as the only man capable of maintaining order in Paris in 1790 and 1791. Once the King fled the capital, however, Lafayette's position became untenable and he was forced to escape to Belgium, but there the right wing emigres considered him a traitor, and he was transported to Austria, where he languished in prison for years. Washington and others secured his release and return to France, but with Napoleon fearing him as a rival, he went into self-imposed exile. **** NOT EX LIB **** 22. Book Condition: Fine. Dustjacket has wear to edges and some small losses to top and is not price clipped. 192 pages. 21 illustrations. Illustrated endpapers. It was not the author's intention to give an ordinary factual account of Edmund Keane's life, instead, he felt impelled to write this story of an adventurous, uncommonly varied stage player's life in autobiographical form and, at the same time, to show the man Kean as a type of the 'eternal mime' who, in the course of a glorious career, learned to distinguish clearly the illusions of the boards and the reality of the world. J. Berstl had no need to add any fictional embellishments to the facts of Kean's kaleidoscopic life, but he felt that a most vital and telling element would have been lacking had he limited himself to a mere description or report. **** NOT EX LIB **** C3A. Dustjacket has a repaired closed tear and light wear and is not price clipped. 351 pages. Portrait frontispiece. Translated from the French by Margaret Shaw. Jules and Edmmond de Goncourt were the most remarkable pair of collaborators in the history of literature. Their lives were dedicated to each other and to the art of writing, to the exclusion of anything else of importance. As novelists, they were pioneers of realism; their books, in which the single-minded serch for truth sometimes resulted in over-documentation, are seldom read today, but their influence on the development of novel-writing cannot be overestimated. The brothers also acted as guides to the aesthetic taste of their time, notably in their enthusiasm for the 18th century and for the art of Japan. But it is their journals in which they recorded in minutest detail the French literary scene of th 19th century, which have assured their immortality. 3. Book Condition: Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. A very large format voume of 320 pages. Coloured pictorial endpapers. Lavishly illustrated in colour. 4,000 years of history and archaeology in the Levant - from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages - are presented in this volume. Uncovering buried history, a team of French archaeologists follows the significant cultural developments and their impact on the gate between the Orient and the Occident: relics of the first cities in the Bronze Age, traces of the Phoenician conquests in the Mediterranean, characteristics of the fusion of cultures in the Greco-Roman era, monuments to the kingdoms of the Nabataeans and their mythical capital Petra, evidence of the golden age of oriental Christianity, and finally the manifestation of Islamic conquest as a battle for power during the crusades. In his pictures, the photographer Robert Polidori shows much more than just the special highlights of each epoch, but rather the cultural-historical meaning of the Levant as a region in which the face of civilization was dramatically shaped. Containing a synoptic chronology presenting the developments of the Levant in the context of the high cultures of Egypt, Mesopotamia and Iran, a glossary of historical and archaeological terminology, a bibliography, and a comprehensive index.
