Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket. 117 pages. A restatement of the principles and practice of hearing confessions is long overdue. This practical guide for confessors was prepared for publication after the author's death by Reginald Cant, Canon of York Minster. Includes a memoir of the author by Gordon Hopkins. R1. Dorothy married James Armand de Rothschild at the age of 17 in 1913. He was 35 years old, the son of Edmond James de Rothschild of the Paris branch of the Rothschild family. In 1922 James de Rothschild inherited Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire which became their country home. After his death in 1957, Waddesdon Manor was bequeathed to the National Trust, but the surrounding estate and small mansion at Eythrope in Buckinghamshire were retained by Mrs. de Rothschild. She remained a strong influence on the preservation and development of the house and collections at Waddesdon. At her death in 1988 she left 94 Million Pounds, which was the largest probated estate in England at that date. Her book charts the story of Waddesdon Manor, built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in the 1870's in the style of a 16th century French chateau. Filled with the magnificent and varied works of art the Baron collected throughout his life and embellished with carved wood panelling from old Parisian houses. Dying as a childless widower, the Baron was succeeded by his youngest sister, Alice, who continued to run Waddesdon in the tradition established by her brother. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine complete dustjacket. 'It is December in the twenty-first century, Cathy has a rather strange project at day-school this term. It all began with the word 'snew', which the encyclopedia mode on her computer tells her used to exist on earth in winter, long ago before the greenhouse effect. But what was winter? And what was the very peculiar festival that happened then? What were 'presents'? Who gave them and why? What was that thing shaped like a balloon, only heavy? And who or what was a 'Samper'? It's a very strange project indeed. Delightfully illustrated by John Eastwood. **** NOT EX LIB **** 165. Illustr.: Eastwood, John. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Hard Cover. Jacket: Very Good

After Mandela - The Battle for the Soul of South Africa

Imprint: London, Hutchinson, 2009
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. First edition, first printing. xxii + 312 pages. In the early 1990's, the African National Congress, led by Nelson Mandela, engaged in a historic and peaceful transition to power in South Africa. For some, the story of South Africa ended with that moment - the victory of the ANC over the bitter injustice of the apartheid regime, and Mandela's astonishing mission of reconciliation. Yet while the economy has grown steadily, as has a fledgling black middle class, and black South Africans have attained positions of great wealth and power, rampant inequality still remains. Violence is endemic in the townships and in the major cities. Race relations are fraught as whites struggle to find their place in the new order. President Thabo Mbeki's denial of the AIDS epidemic has led to thousands of unnecessary deaths and has been morally and politically dangerous, as has his failure to check the abuses of Roberst Mugabe's dictatorship in Zimbabwe, which has tarnished South Africa's reputation abroad. In this expertly researched account, the award winning journalist draws on his deep knowledge of South Africa and his relationships with its most important figures - Mbeki, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and of course Mandela himself. 12. Piltdown Man - The Secret Life of Charles Dawson and the World's Greatest Hoax

Imprint: Stroud, Gloucestershie, Tempus, 2003
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Softback

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy. Piltdown in Sussex was the scene of the most daring archaeological hoax ever to be perpetrated upon the scientific community, when the discovery of a human skull and ape-like jaw was hailed in the press as the evolutionary 'missing link' between ape and man, but it was exposed as a fraud in 1953. For the last 50 years people have speculated on the identity and possible motive of the Piltdown forger and now for the first time, the life and career of Piltdown's 'discoverer', Charles Dawson, is put under the microscope with some rather startling conclusions. Piltdown, it would appear, was only one in a long line of hoaxes, frauds and academic deceptions. 51. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Soft Cover. Jacket: No Jacket
