'Mrs. Dengler was not the most popular resident of Pittsville. She was an elderish lady, quite stout, with a red face and poppy black eyes which were always bugging round for sinfulness. When she saw the advertisement for Morton Entertainments, her eyes popped out further than usual and her face got redder and redder. By hook or by crook she was going to prevent Mr. Morton and his daughter Tess from giving their show and began scheming to discredit them - and Ali, their elephant - in the eyes of Pittsville. Fortunately, they had friends - Uncle Sam Swyer, his two grandsons, his hired man, Don Harding - and had a scheme of their own , to show Mrs. Dengler where sinfulness really begins and ends. Ali had a big part to play and carried it out wih all the sagacity and good manners proper to an Indian elephant'. C3E. Illustr.: Lee, Doris. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hard Cover. Strathern, Paul
Vaslav - An Impersonation of Nijinsky

Imprint: London, Quartet Books, 1975
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from minor indentation to lower front) with VG+ dustjacket which is not price clipped. 216 pages. Vaslav Nijinsky wa more than a star: he was considered the greatest ballet dancer ever. His tartar looks, his famous leap, his unique entrechat royal, his extraordinary strength, grace and vigour, his imaginative choreography - all these combined to make him and Sergei Diaghilev's Russian Ballet a phenomenal success. At the peak of his career he went mad. Twenty five years later, as the Red Army advances across Nazi-occupied Hungary, the horror and disruption of war awaken in him glorious and humiliating memories. His bizarre and disastrous relationship with Diaghilev, his virtual imprisonment in Hungary during the First World War and the fiasco of his American tour all contributed to his paranoia and spiritual confusion. 'Vaslav is a fantastic reconstruction of his last days. While he and his wife Romola flee across war-ravaged Europe, we see in a series of vivid glimpses Nijinsky's attempts to come to terms with the tempestuous fortunes of his career and private life which have dranged him. This novel is a powerful and daring study of one of the great artists of the century. 300. Book Condition: Near Fine. Binding: Hard Cover. Jacket: Very Good

Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from usual age toning to page edges) with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 351 pages. When young academic Terry Williams goes to a remote corner of the Scottish Highlands, she's simply intending to edit the letters of Catherine McCulloch, tortured and burnt as a witch in the 17th century. Then the body of a young woman is found on a local farm, dumped in the death pit amidst a pile of rotting pigs. She is Donna Fairhead, one of a nearby community of Wiccans - modern day witches. As forensic excavation of the death pit throws up yet more horrors, Terry's work on the letters reveals that there may have been more to Catherine's death than anyone had ever imagined. And as the present-day death toll mounts, Terry realises that the identity of the killer may also be part of a three-centuries-old mystery, a mystery whose next victim might well be herself. D4B.
