SIZE OF THOUGHTS:, THE: ESSAYS AND OTHER LUMBER

Imprint: Random House, 1996
Edition: 1st Edition
Binding: Hardcover

A highly collectible first edition (as stated)price clipped, protected in a new brodart wrapper. Novelist and essayist Nicholson Baker has had a small but well-deserved cult following since his first book, The Mezzanine, and the publication of the literary sex-bomb Vox saw his popularity mushroom. Baker's great gift is a precision of observational detail that has a peculiarly incisive effect on a reader's consciousness. Here is over a decade's worth of his essays and articles, including the much-praised card catalogue article first published in the New Yorker. The Size of Thoughts, through its varied forays into the realms of the overlooked, the underfunded, and the wrongfully scrapped, is a funny and thought-provoking book by one of the most distinctive stylists and thinkers of our time., Fine/Fine

BAKER, NICHOLSON
THE EVERLASTING STORY OF NORY: A NOVEL

Imprint: Random House, 1998
Edition: 1st Edition
Binding: Hardcover

A tight clean first edition (as stated)protected in a new brodart wrapper. Sex and the adult cerebellum have tended to be Nicholson Baker's cherished subjects, and not necessarily in that order. In The Everlasting Story of N ory, however, he turns his literary microscopy in an entirely new directio n, exploring the consciousness of a child. Nory, we are told, "was a nine- year-old girl from America with straight brown bangs and brown eyes. She w as interested in dentistry or being a paper engineer when she grew up." Th is future dentist or paper engineer is also ensconced for a year in the En glish town of Threll, where her family is taking a sabbatical from life in Palo Alto. Baker's novel is endearing, entertaining, and most of all, accurate. The author recognizes that an authentic nine-year-old is incapable of long, intricate narratives, so he divides Nory's story into short (and comically abrupt) chapters. He never credits Nory with precocious wisdom or insight. Instead, Baker concentrates on exactly how a nine-year-old mind works. There is, for instance, that wonderful literalism, which subjects a cliché to strict, heartbreaking scrutiny: "Nory suspected that the straw that broke the camel's back was an unsensible idea anyway, because first of all, stop and think of that poor camel. How could it happen? Doesn't he have something to say about the situation? Also, camels' backs are pretty strong things. If you've ridden on them, you know that they can support at least two people, if not three.", Near Fine/Near Fine

HOUR GAME

Imprint: Macmillan, 2004
Binding: Paperback

A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: Two disgraced former Secret Service officers team up to solve a series of copy-cat crimes in this exciting new thriller by a master of the game. Sean King was momentarily distracted when a presidential candidate he'd been guarding was assassinated a few feet from where he stood, and Michelle Maxwell left the Service under a similar cloud when she lost a "protectee" to an ingenious kidnapping scheme, events told in Baldacci's typical terse, fast- paced style in Split Second. Now partners in a private investigation firm in a small Virginia town, they're hired to investigate a burglary at the home of a wealthy local family. But even before the chief suspect in the break-in meets his death in a gruesome slaying reminiscent of a serial killer long since caught and punished, King and Maxwell get caught up in a string of other murders, each of which copies the techniques of another madman, from San Francisco's Zodiac Killer to Chicago's infamous John Wayne Gacy. While the two protagonists aren't especially complex or well- developed, the action never stops, and Baldacci's trademark pacing keeps the reader turning pages until the denouement., Very Good

MY ANIMALS AND OTHER FAMILY

Imprint: Penguin Books Ltd, 2013

"My Animals and Other Family" by Clare Balding is a funny, brave, tender st ory of self-discovery. 'I had spent most of my childhood thinking I was a d og, and suspect I had aged in dog years.' Clare Balding grew up in a rather unusual household. Her father a champion trainer, she shared her life with more than 100 thoroughbred racehorses, mares, foals and ponies, as well as an ever-present pack of boxers and lurchers. As a toddler she would happil y ride the legendary Mill Reef and take breakfast with the Queen. She and h er younger brother came very low down the pecking order. Left to their own devices, they had to learn life's toughest lessons through the animals, and through their adventures in the stables and the idyllic Hampshire Downs. F rom the protective Candy to the pot-bellied Valkyrie and the frisky Hattie, each horse and each dog had their own character and their own special part to play. The running family joke was that "women ain't people". Clare had to prove them wrong, to make her voice heard - but first she had to make su re she had something to say. "Moving, funny and larger than life". (Michael Morpurgo). "Magical, enchanting, riotously eccentric". ("Daily Mail"). "Fu nny and unexpectedly wise. Balding has lots of good stories to tell. It is impossible not to admire her honesty". ("Mail on Sunday"). "The reading equ ivalent of snuggling by the fire with a labrador". ("The Guardian"). Clare Balding is an award-winning broadcaster and writer. She has been a lead pre senter for the Olympics, Paralympics, Winter Olympics and Commonwealth Game s. Balliett, Whitney
AMERICAN MUSICIANS: FIFTY-SIX PORTRAITS IN JAZZ

Imprint: Oxford University Press, 1986
Binding: Hardcover

A tight clean hardcover, no markings throughout, NOT an ex-lib edition: This is Whitney Balliett's long-awaited "big book." In it are all the jazz profiles he has written for The New Yorker during the past 24 years. These include his famous early portraits of Pee Wee Russell, Red Allen, Earl Hine s, and Mary Lou Williams, done when these giants were in full flower; his r ecent reconstructions of the lives of such legends as Art Tatum, Coleman Ha wkins, Jack Teagarden, Zoot Sims, and Dave Tough; His quick but indelible g limpses into the daily (or nocturnal) lives of Duke Ellington and Charles M ingus; and his vivid pictures of such on-the-scene masters as Red Norvo, Or nette Coleman, Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones, Art Farmer, Michael Moore, and Tomm y Flanagan. Also included are such lesser known but invaluable players as A rt Hodes, Jabbo Smith, Joe Wilder, Warne Marsh, Gene Bertoncini, Joe Bushki n, and Marie Marcus. All these profiles make the reader feel, as one observer has pointed out, that he is "sitting with Balliett and his subject and listening in." The book can be taken as a kind of history of jazz, as well as a biographical encylopedia of many of its most important performers. It can also be regarded as a model of American prose. Robert Dawidoff said of Whitney Balliett"s most recent book, Jelly Roll, Jabbo and Fats, that "few people write as well about anything as Balliett writes about jazz." And the late Philip Larkin wrote in 1982 of the "transcendence of Balliett's prose.", Very Good/Very Good

Balsekar, Ramesh
PEACE AND HARMONY IN DAILY LIVING

Imprint: yogi, 2005
Binding: Paperback

Do you really know what you want most in life? Even if you have all the success, fame and money you want, and the good health to enjoy it - are you happy and fulfilled? Why is it that we all find ourselves seeking something more from life - all the time? Now, a modern sage points out that each one of us, at some time or the other, has a taste of what that is: an uninterrupted experience of peace and harmony. He also shows how we can achieve this constant repose in our ordinary, hectic, daily living. This is what the seeking - most evidently, the spiritual seeking - is all about. Thus, Ramesh Balsekar in his book 'Peace and Harmony in Daily Living' raises a very basic question: Why should anyone seek 'enlightenment' or 'Self-realization'? A simple examination of one's personal experience will reveal that what usually disrupts the peace and harmony in life is a thought about something we think we - or someone else - should or shouldn't have done. Hence, a massive load of guilt and shame for oneself, or hatred and malice for the other, is perpetuated. Without a lot of arduous effort - work, discipline, sacrifice, sadhana - without outside assistance, but simply by investigating one's own experience, it is possible to get relief from this bondage. What mystics have said for ages, is here viewed from the perspective of modern living: that actions are 'happenings' and not something done by someone. This understanding is what actually contributes to and helps us in discovering the state of equanimity and peace which we most ardently seek. Try it and you will see how simple it really is., Very Good+

Editorial Reviews About the Author Sergio Bambarén Roggero was born the first day of December of 1960 in Lima, Peru. Educated in a British High School, Sergio has been captivated from his early years by the ocean, having been born in a city that meets the sea. This would influence him for the rest of his life, and put him in a journey he would have never expected: to become a writer. His spirit of traveling took him to the United States, where he graduated as a Chemical Engineer at Texas A&M University. However, the ocean was still his greatest love, and traveling gave him the opportunity to go surfing to places such as Central America, Mexico, California and Hawaii. After a brief, Very Good
