Adair, Gilbert
BUENAS NOCHES, BUENOS AIRES
Imprint: Faber & Faber, 2004
Binding: Paperback
Gilbert Adair's extraordinary new novel constitutes both the exuberant cele bration of, and the melancholy elegy for, that poignantly brief period in t he early 1980s when homosexuals marched collectively, arm in arm, out of th e closet. Not all homosexuals, however. Adair's protagonist, Gideon, a lone ly, horny young Englishman who arrives in Paris at the very beginning of th e decade to take up a teaching post in the local Berlitz, is increasingly f ascinated by the intoxicating atmosphere of erotic banter and bragging in t he school's all-male and virtually all-gay common room. The moment has sure ly arrived for him, too, to overcome his own chronic timidity and actually do what he has only ever dared fantasise about. Yet Gideon has a secret - a secret he is prepared to share with nobody but the reader, a secret he is finally obliged to confront, with surprising results, when the shadow of AI DS starts to cast its sinister net over the gay community. Wise and witty, Buenas Noches, Buenos Aires contrives to be many things at once: a flamboya nt chronicle of a period of sexual emancipation now long gone, an incisive dissection of the circuitous route taken by one young man from self-doubt t o self-discovery, a tour de force of astonishing sexual candour and, not le ast, a dazzling stylistic exercise., Very Good

MEXICO
Imprint: DK Travel, 2006
Binding: Turtleback
A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: Mexico is a heady sort of place; it inundates you with sights, sounds, smel ls, tastes, and tactile sensations. A dry text, no matter how informative, just doesn't do justice to Mexico's allure. DK's Eyewitness Travel Guide se ries, on the other hand, does. Sure, it provides the necessary data points. The "Travelers' Needs" section contains 168 recommended hotel options and another 168 restaurants--as well as a beautifully illustrated guide to the foods of Mexico. And there are pages of practical information on visas, hea lth precautions, time zones, electricity, taxis, security, banking, communi cations, and the like. But DK's guide provides far more inspirational than a mere collection of data. The two-page glossy color map of Mexico is not just clear and easy to understand, it's beautiful. The hundreds of color photographs throughout the book are exquisite, depicting the sere hilltop archeological site of Monte Albán, fishermen preparing nets on a Yucatán beach, the vibrancy of a fruit market in San Cristóbal de las Casas, the green lushness of the wetlands, the scrub of the Sonora desert, and the intense vegetation of the Tehuantepec rainforests. There are 3-D aerial- view layouts of towns and ancient sites, cutaways and floor plans for churches and pyramids, as well as wonderful explanatory texts for each region, delving into history, traditions, sights, fiestas, foods, music, and activities. DK's is a guide book that is actually a pleasure to use-- one that adds excitement to the necessary task of planning your vacation., Near Fine

A FARTHER SHORE: IRELAND'S LONG ROAD TO PEACE
Imprint: Random House, 2003
Edition: 1st Edition
Binding: Hardcover
A tight clean copy, protected in a new brodart wrapper. Born in Belfast in 1948, Adams has spent his entire life in the nationalist movement and immediately states that he was never a member of the IRA; he similarly denies that Sinn Fein is "the political wing of the IRA." Northern Ireland politics is always a complicated array of facts and contradictions, but Adams has done a workmanlike job of defining events and personalities. He puts the 1988 Gibraltar assassinations of three IRA members squarely at the feet of Margaret Thatcher. And while he excoriates Thatcher and her ilk, he embraces Nelson Mandela ("the greatest political leader of our time"), Steve Bilko, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Rosa Parks and Ho Chi Minh as mentors and heroes. The Good Friday Agreement is at the book's heart. There are many heroes, including Nobel laureate John Hume, Irish Prime Ministers Albert Reynolds and Bertie Ahern, Tony Blair and, most prominently, Bill Clinton. Adams shows how he and his cohorts reached across the Atlantic for help and support. It was Clinton's unilateral 1994 act granting Adams a visa to enter the U.S. that started the peace process rolling. Adams takes us step-by-step through the tense negotiations, which culminated in the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Adams's eighth book is suspenseful, biased, subversive, blunt and often funny. Edifying for both the neophyte and the veteran observer, it will open eyes as to how this master politician thinks and operates., Fine/Near Fine

You'll know that a lot of black people you mee t at parties or work functions don't care who played Thelma's husband on "G ood Times", don't want to discuss the Malcolm X biography you just read and definitely don't want to listen to country music. Ever. Yes, it's a good t hing Nick is here to explain. Because if we're going to live together in pe ace and harmony, you people are going to need help. Black People, Briefly Explained. A Q&A with Nick Adams Q: Nick, what is the correct term to use when addressing my new friends: Bl ack or African- American? A: Personally, I always liked Afro-American. I liked being named after a 19 70's hairdo. But then I wondered why we didn't become the Jheri- curled Amer icans or High Top Fade Americans. No saris. No scents. No spices. No music. No lyricism. No illusions. This i s India now. Balram Halwai is a complicated man. Servant. Philosopher. Entr epreneur. Murderer. Over the course of seven nights, by the scattered light of a preposterous chandelier, Balram tells us the terrible and transfixing story of how he came to be a success in life-having nothing but his own wi ts to help him along. Born in a village in the dark heart of India, Balram gets a break when he is hired as a driver for a wealthy man, two Pomeranian s (Puddles and Cuddles), and the rich man's (very unlucky) son. Through Bal ram's eyes, we see India as we've never seen it before: the cockroaches and the call centers, the prostitutes and the worshippers, the water buffalo a nd, trapped in so many kinds of cages that escape is (almost) impossible, t he white tiger. And with a charisma as undeniable as it is unexpected, he t eaches us that religion doesn't create morality and money doesn't solve eve ry problem-but decency can still be found in a corrupt world, and you can g et what you want out of life if you eavesdrop on the right conversations., Very Good

AELIAN ON ANIMALS, I, BOOKS 1-5 (LOEB CLASSICAL LIBRARY©)
Imprint: Harvard University Press, 1958
Binding: Hardcover
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Aelian (Claudius Aelianus), a Roman born ca. AD 170 at Praeneste, was a pupil of the rhetorician Pausanias of Caesarea, and taught and practised rhetoric. Expert in Attic Greek, he became a serious scholar and studied history under the patronage of the Roman empress Julia Domna. He apparently spent all his life in Italy where he died after AD 230. Aelian's On the Characteristics of Animals, in 17 books, is a collection of facts and beliefs concerning the habits of animals drawn from Greek authors and some personal observation. Fact, fancy, legend, stories and gossip all play their part in a narrative which is meant to entertain readers. If there is any ethical motive, it is that the virtues of untaught yet reasoning animals can be a lesson to thoughtless and selfish mankind. ON ANIMALS: AELIAN: ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ANIMALS, VOLUME II, BOOKS 6-1 1
Imprint: Harvard University Press, 1959
Binding: Hardcover
Aelian (Claudius Aelianus), a Roman born ca. 170 CE at Praeneste, was a pup il of the rhetorician Pausanias of Caesarea, and taught and practised rheto ric. Expert in Attic Greek, he became a serious scholar and studied history under the patronage of the Roman empress Julia Domna. He apparently spent all his life in Italy where he died after 230 CE. Aelian's On the Characteristics of Animals, in 17 books, is a collection of facts and beliefs concerning the habits of animals drawn from Greek author s and some personal observation. Fact, fancy, legend, stories and gossip al l play their part in a narrative which is meant to entertain readers. If th ere is any ethical motive, it is that the virtues of untaught yet reasoning animals can be a lesson to thoughtless and selfish mankind. The Loeb Class ical Library edition of the work is in three volumes. The Historical Miscellany (Loeb no. 486) is of similar nature. In 14 books, it consists mainly of historical and biographical anecdotes and retellings of legendary events. Some of Aelian's material is drawn from authors whose works are lost., Very Good/Very Good

THE SOUTH BEACH DIET : THE DELICIOUS, DOCTOR-DESIGNED, FOOLPROOF PLAN FOR F AST AND HEALTHY WEIGHT LOSS BY ARTHUR AGATSTON (2005,
Imprint: St. Martin's Press
Binding: Paperback
The verdict is in: those simple carbohydrates we've been living on are kill ing us. For good health, we've got to get our blood sugar under control and stop the incessant cravings. Or so says Dr Arthur Agatston, author of The South Beach Diet. The first half of the book details the science behind the diet. Most of the explanations revolve around why things you thought were healthy--orange juice, wholemeal bread, carrots-- are actually evil. To avoi d blood sugar surges, Agatston created a modified carbohydrate plan, recomm ending plenty of high-fibre food, lean protein and healthy fat and reducing bread, rice, pasta and fruit. Major differences from other diets include a lack of concern over portion size and a serious indifference to exercise. Feeling full while on a diet is a beautiful thing, but it seems odd that a cardiologist buries his exercise recommendations in a solitary sentence. The last half of the book covers his three-stage plan; daily diets are mixed with recipes, some of which are from South Beach restaurant chefs. The most restrictive period lasts just two weeks, enough time to stabilise your urges and lose a few pounds; stage two adds fruits and a handful of other carbs, while stage three is meant to last the remainder of your life, with occasional lapses for white bread or birthday cake., Very Good

LORDS OF FINANCE: THE BANKERS WHO BROKE THE WORLD
Imprint: Penguin Books, 2009
Binding: Paperback
"A magisterial work...You can't help thinking about the economic crisis we' re living through now." --The New York Times Book Review It is commonly believed that the Great Depression that began in 1929 resulted from a confluence of events beyond any one person's or government's control. In fact, as Liaquat Ahamed reveals, it was the decisions made by a small number of central bankers that were the primary cause of that economic meltdown, the effects of which set the stage for World War II and reverberated for decades. As yet another period of economic turmoil makes headlines today, Lords of Finance is a potent reminder of the enormous impact that the decisions of central bankers can have, their fallibility, and the terrible human consequences that can result when they are wrong., Very Good

P.S. I LOVE YOU
Imprint: Harper, 2004
Binding: Paperback
A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: Cecelia Ahern's debut novel, PS, I Love You, follows the engaging, witty and occasionally sappy reawakening of Holly, a young Irish widow who must put her life back together after she loses her husband Gerry to a brain tumour. Ahern, the twentysomething daughter of Ireland's Prime Minister, has discovered a clever and original twist to the Moving On After Death concept made famous by novelists and screenwriters alike--Gerry has left Holly a series of letters designed to help her face the year ahead and carry on with her life. As the novel takes readers through the seasons (and through Gerry's monthly directives), we watch as Holly finds a new job, takes a holiday to Spain with her girlfriends, and sorts through her beloved husband's belongings. Accompanying Holly throughout the healing process is a cast of friends and family members who add as much to the novel's success as Holly's own tale of survival. In fact, it is these supporting characters' mini-dramas that make PS, I Love You more than just another superficial tearjerker with the obligatory episode at a karaoke bar. Ahern shows real talent for capturing the essence of an interaction between friends and foes alike; even if Holly's circle of friends does resemble the gang from Bridget Jones a bit too neatly to ignore (her best friend is even called Sharon)., Fine
