Davis, L.J.
ONASSIS: ARISTOTLE AND CHRISTINA

Imprint: St. Martin's Press, 1987
Binding: Paperback

From Publishers Weekly Davis is a novelist, also author of the factual Bad Money, and he uses both his storytelling and reporting skills in this dual biography. Much of the material is by now over-familiar, but he adds sufficient color to heighten reader interest. The author details Onassis's financial coups, rivalries, m any romantic affairs, friendships, etc. More engrossing sections describe h is daughter Christina's life, stressing the vast difference between the pri vate woman and the adopted persona. Outwardly, she suggests a neurotic: fou r failed marriages interrupting frantic running around in search of diversi ons. But Davis shows that Christina has inherited and is wisely using her f ather's business acumen. Immediately after his death, she took control of t he Onassis empire and is building on it. The book is sharply witty and ente rtaining. Photos. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title., Very Good

The 17th book in the bestselling Falco detective series. Humour, surprises and domestic irony await Roman sleuth Falco as he attempt s to solve the disappearance of two newlyweds on their honeymoon trip to An cient Greece. With safe seas, good roads, a common currency, and lots of interesting conq uered territory, the Romans naturally invented tourism. They believed in a life of leisure -- fine for those who could afford it -- and some would set off on their travels for maybe five years at a time. As these ancient cult ure vultures descended on the sights, the tour guide was born to cater to t heir needs. "Marcus, you must help me!" Stunned by the dramatic appeal from his otherwi se cool mother-in-law, Marcus Didius Falso cannot resist. His brother-in-la w, Aulus, has been diverted from his route to Athens University by a man wh ose newly married daughter and her husband have disappeared while visiting the Olympic Games as part of their wedding trip. Suspecting a classic cover -up, Aulus enrolls Falco's help in solving the case. And of course his moth er-in-law hopes to hurry her son along to university by passing the case ov er to Falco. Joining the rest of the married couple's tour group on the remains of their Grand Tour, Falco and Helena seize the opportunity to interview the owner/manager of "Seven Sights Travel," as well as the other guests. Seemingly not getting very far, they can at least make the most of the splendid sights; but finally, on reaching Delphi, Falco and Helena unra, Very Good

TECHGNOSIS: MYTH, MAGIC, AND MYSTICISM IN THE AGE OF INFORMATION

Imprint: Three Rivers Press, 1999
Binding: Paperback

A read copy but no markings throughout, unblemished spine, NOT an ex- librar y edition: Exploring the mystical impulses behind our obsession with information techn ology, TechGnosis presents a fascinating and passionately original perspect ive on technoculture. Today we often assume that the triumph of technological rationality has con demned the spiritual imagination to the trash heap of history. But as Erik Davis explains, religious impulses and magical dreams permeate the history of technology. Ranging from the printing press to the telegraph, from radio to the Internet, David peels away the utilitarian shell of technology to r eveal the mystical and millennialist fervor that attends each new communica tions breakthrough. As he unveils the hidden history of techno-mysticism, D avis shows how the religious imagination continues to feed the utopian drea ms, apocalyptic visions, and alien obsessions that populate today's technol ogical unconscious. In these pages, Davis offers a lucid, playful, and astonishingly erudite journey through our hyper-mediated environment. Anyone grappling with the morphing boundaries and terminal speed of our present moment will want to take the ride., Very Good

THE ACCUSERS : MARCUS DIDIUS FALCO

Imprint: Arrow, 2004
Binding: Paperback

A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Having returned from his trip to Londinium, Falco takes up employment with Paccius Africanus and Silius Italicus, two lawyers at the top of their trad e. For the trial of a senator they need Falco to make an affidavit confirmi ng repayment of a loan. Having been out of the country and starved of Forum gossip for some time, Falco has little interest in this trial, so he makes his deposition and then leaves. The prosecution are successful and a large financial judgement is made, but one month later the senator is dead, apparently by suicide. The heirs are now in a situation of not having to pay up, and the prosecutor Silius Itali cus suddenly decides to seek out Falco. With a little coercion, Falco joins the prosecution in seeking to persuade a magistrate to instigate a new tri al against Metellus' son. Blinded by the vision of rich pickings to be gain ed by the prosecution, Falco temporarily forgets that, if they fail, the fi nancial penalties leveled against the informers who brought the case are po tentially enormous. A pure delight, with Davis's unique blend of wit and humour brilliantly imm ersing us in the marvels of ancient Roman life Amazon Review Lindsey Davis's Falco thrillers normally focus on how like us the Romans were; The Accusers concentrates on an important difference. Prosecutors were rewarded with a portion of the guilty's goods, or fined to compensate the innocent. When a senator, found guilty in a corruption trial, apparently kills himself, Falco is hired to prove, Very Good

TIME TO DEPART

Imprint: Warner Books, 1998
Binding: Paperback

A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: Fresh from Last Act in Palmyra, Marcus Didius Falco, that most modern of ancient Romans, takes on organized crime in this latest installment of Davis's impeccably executed series. Falco has a job everyone loves to hate: he's the Emperor Vespasian's informer, or private detective?and he does his work well. This time, he's up against Balbinus Pius, perhaps the original John Gotti. Balbinus has finally been convicted of a capital crime, but, in traditional Roman style, he's been given a chance to flee before his scheduled execution. The power vacuum created by his departure seems to have sucked up every miscreant in Rome: markets are plundered, children are kidnapped, centurions are murdered. While Falco sets out to determine whether the crime wave is the work of a new kingpin or a herd of small- time operators, his private life is also in a bit of a spin. Companion Helena, a senator's daughter whom Falco is forbidden by law to marry because of their differing rank, is pregnant. And he's also pitted against his old army buddy and best friend, Petronius, captain of the fourth cohort of the Aventine Watch, in a corruption investigation. The tale gets a bit bumpy, as Davis, compensating for a slightly subpar mystery plot, tosses in lots of action scenes and personal turmoil. But Falco remains as delightfully irreverent and insightful as ever; and Davis, as usual, brings the time to life while handling the eternals?worry, danger, love and in-laws?just as deftly., Very Good

TWO FOR THE LIONS

Imprint: Arrow, 1998
Binding: Paperback

A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Lumbered with working alongside reptilian Chief Spy Anacrites, Marcus Didiu s Falco has the perfect plan to make money - he will assist Vespasian in th e Emperor's 'Great Census' of AD73. His potential fee could finally allow h im to join the middle ranks and be worthy of long- suffering Helena Justina. Unexpectedly confronted with the murder of a man- eating lion, Falco is dist racted from his original task, uncovering a bitter rivalry between the glad iators' trainers. With one star gladiator dead, Falco is forced to investig ate and the trail leads from Rome to the blood-soaked sand of the arena in North Africa. Amazon Review The further Davies gets into her series of private eye (or, to be precise, public informer) thrillers set in the Rome of Vespasian, the more she learn s what it is that she does best. Falco is working for the tax department, i nvestigating used gladiator scams, and stumbles into more murders. The vari ous mysteries here--the stabbing of the arena- lion trained to eat criminal s, the murder of a famous gladiator generally considered past his prime--ar e solved elegantly enough and with a genial ruthlessness appropriate to the period in which they are set. Davies never forgets that this society rests on the backs of slaves and has a taste for bloodshed which even we might consider excessive. But what we read Davies for is partly for the continuing soap opera of on-the-make Falco, his upper-class wife Helena and their variously rackety, lowlife or snobbish connectio, Very Good

WITH DARING FAITH: A BIOGRAPHY OF AMY CARMICHAEL

Imprint: BJU Press, 1987
Binding: Paperback

In 1903 Amy Carmichael's book Things as They Are shocked many Englishmen an d Americans into taking a closer look at India. Unafraid of public criticis m, Amy Carmichael had revealed to the Western world the spiritual bondage o f India as well as the suffering of thousands under the supposedly "benign" religion of Hinduism. She raised a plea for the little children who were b eing sold into lives of shame as slaves in Hindu temples. Never content to do things man's way when the Lord was showing her a better way, Amy Carmichael was one of the first missionaries in India to adopt In dian dress. Amid Christians who considered manual labor dishonorable, she c heerfully settled down to doing her share of the work with the Dohnavur chi ldren. But the qualities of Amy Carmichael that will stand out to the reade r are her daring faith, her overcoming spirit, and her tender love for the children she sought to rescue. She was their beloved "Amma," or "Mother." H er family grew to almost a thousand children before her death in 1951. We hope that With Daring Faith will be a first step for our readers in discovering the wealth of insight and challenge that missionary biographies can offer. In Amy Carmichael's victories in India, we see the victory of the Lord Jesus Christ over the powers of darkness., Near Fine

THE LONG SUIT

Imprint: Jonathan Cape, 2002
Binding: Paperback

A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: On the second green of a Long Island golf-course there are three golf balls and a corpse with a bullet-hole in his forehead. The call goes out for Harry Fielding - that guardian angel with wet wings and a five-o'clock shadow - to come in from the cold. With a new suit and a new partner, Harry is back where he least wants to be: playing the deadly games of MI5. Always a triangular peg in a square hole, Harry has never felt easy with the protocol, the procedure and the need-to-know principles of the British secret service - particularly at the sleazy, turbid end of the pool in which he has to swim. And it doesn't help that his apprentice, Johnny Weeks, is a troublemaker with the measured diffidence of a French waiter and the volatility of a paid-up psychopath. Harry is going back to the work he hates but does so well, while all he really wants is to rekindle his relationships with his ailing, amnesiac father and his ex-wife - who appears to be sleeping with his boss. Will this be his last chance: the fresh start that will restore moral equilibrium to a life turned turtle, to a crooked man who wants to go straight?, Very Good

TO WALK AND NOT FAINT: A MONTH OF MEDITATIONS ON ISAIAH 40

Imprint: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing C, 1997
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

A tight clean copy, no markings throughout. Completely revised more than fifteen years after its first printing, To Wal k and Not Faint is Marva J. Dawn's popular first book. Her devotional refle ctions examine the fortieth chapter of Isaiah as it deals with many of the critical issues of daily life. Dawn's meticulous study opens up each verse of Isaiah 40 to challenge us with significant insights for faith and profou nd motivation for growth in discipleship. The structure of the book bridges head and heart: it offers both exegetical depth and personal involvement for a month of devotional reflection. Each meditation observes the text carefully, considers some of the nuances and implications of the original Hebrew, and identifies how our lives fit into the bigger story of the biblical narrative. Thus, the book both supplies skills for biblical meditation and invites readers to contemplate God's relation to all the cries of human existence, to realize how a relationship with the Trinity gives us the unusual ability to handle all the dimensions of life., Near Fine

CREDIBLE THREAT (JERI HOWARD MYSTERIES (PAPERBACK))

Imprint: Fawcett, 1997

California PI Jeri Howard, seen last in Nobody's Child, takes a deliciously suspicion-saturated interest in everyone around in her latest adventure. T hat doubting stance makes the best part of this tale, which begins with har assing phone calls and some flattened flora and is strong- armed to a gun-wa ving finale. Vicki Vernon, the daughter of Jeri's ex- husband, calls for hel p when she and her housemates, all U.C. Berkeley students being threatened by menacing phone calls, find their garden has been trashed. The group of e ight offers Jeri a wealth of possible leads: Vicki and another are pestered by an obnoxious man they refuse to date; one encounters "frightening peopl e" when she volunteers at an abortion clinic; another works at a center for battered women. A few, Jeri learns in her probing, have omitted bits of th eir history when talking with her. She hasn't made much headway when a pipe bomb is tossed through the front window. Leaving most of the college crowd behind, Dawson sets a related mystery behind the current danger, one that hinges on an old unsolved homicide case that Jeri investigated eight years earlier., Fine

DAYNA and HEATHER MERCER, STACY MATTINGLY CURRY
PRISONERS OF HOPE : THE STORY OF OUR CAPTIVITY AND FREEDOM IN AFGHANISTAN [ IMPORT]

Imprint: Water Brook, 2002
Binding: Hardcover

This is the eagerly anticipated story of the two Christian aid workers from Waco, Tex., who were imprisoned by the Taliban in Afghanistan shortly befo re the September 11 attacks on America. Because so many Americans followed their plight in the press, the behind-the-scenes details of their 105-day o rdeal will inevitably be riveting. Unfortunately, the narrative is told in a weaving fashion that shuttles back and forth between Curry's voice, Merce r's voice and their joint perspective. Moreover, much of their story of mon otonous prison life does not lend itself well to straightforward chronologi cal narrative. Instead, the book is organized loosely by themes, places and people, and often leaps ahead of itself in confusing ways. Despite these f rustrations and a surprisingly weak fade- to-black ending that barely mentio ns God or the faith that has sustained the missionaries throughout, the boo k is compelling. Readers will learn of the individual paths that led Curry and Mercer first to Christ and then to Kabul. Especially heartbreaking are the stories of all the Afghan families who were relying on the women for li fe-saving support and who were abruptly cut off at the time of their arrest . Perhaps most powerful is the honesty with which Mercer discusses her spir itual difficulties in captivity. This is not the story of larger-than-life heroines whose faith never wavers in the face of persecution; readers are a llowed glimpses into Mercer's very real despair and the rift it caused in t he group of prisoners. This gritty sense of the real life of ordinary, beli eving Americans keeps the pages turning., Fine/Fine

Imprint: Simon & Schuster Export, 2009
Binding: Paperback

Nothing is as it seems in The Bodies Left Behind, Jeffrey Deaver's quintess ential can't-put-it-down thriller about an off-duty cop who investigates an aborted 911 call from a secluded vacation home and ends up on the run. Fro m the opening scene (that'll keep even the bravest of you at home with the doors locked and the shades drawn), Deaver delivers a clever page-turner th at reads like one of his tightly plotted and fast- paced short stories (fans should check out Twisted). HELL'S KITCHEN

Imprint: Pocket, 2001
Binding: Paperback

Perennial bestselling author Jeffrey Deaver's alter ego, William Jefferies, knows a thing or two about Hollywood. So does John Pellam, the hero of his previous Shallow Graves and Bloody River Blues and the latest in the serie s, Hell's Kitchen. Pellam made a name for himself as a director before a st int in San Quentin took him off the fast track. Since his release he's been earning his keep as a location scout and not so incidentally shooting a do cumentary about New York's Hell's Kitchen, which he hopes will propel him b ack into the career that skidded south after he ran afoul of the law. Pellam has found the star of his new film, one Ettie Washington, who has lived in the neighborhood for decades and is the perfect voice to tell the story of an area that's losing its old-time seediness to urban gentrification. But then Ettie's tenement goes up in a blaze that kills a small boy and puts her right in the public eye--as a suspect. It's only the beginning of a series of fires, each one more deadly. The cops know Ettie couldn't have set the others, since she's been in jail, but they're convinced she knows who did. Pellam has his own reasons for getting Ettie off the hook and embarking on a search for the real pyromaniac. Jeffries saves the best one for the very end of this taut, well-paced, and highly atmospheric thriller., Near Fine

MORE TWISTED: COLLECTED STORIES, VOL. II

Imprint: Pocket, 2007
Binding: Paperback

Bestseller Deaver's second story collection (after 2003's Twisted) is best enjoyed in small doses, since, as the author states in his preface, each of the 16 suspense tales contains a "gut-wrenching twist," a formulaic final reversal that loses its punch with too much repetition. That said, readers will find a number of clever and concise thrillers. The standout, "Born Bad ," about a mother waiting in fear for her estranged daughter to kill her, d oes a superb job of matching up the clues at the beginning with the tale's resolution. Sherlockians will get a kick from a pastiche narrated in third person, "The Westphalian Ring," pitting Holmes against a crafty jewel thief . In an afterword to the tale "Afraid," Deaver (The Bone Collector) explain s how he works the concept of fear into his fiction., Very Good

SLEEPING DOLL, THE [IMPORT]

Imprint: Hodder, 2008
Binding: Paperback

Kathryn Dance, an investigator with the California Bureau of Investigation, returns from Deaver's The Cold Moon (where she was a secondary) in this po st–prison break pulse-pounder. Dance is the lead cop handling the esc ape of psychopathic killer Daniel Pell, dubbed "Son of Manson" by the press for his "family" of young runaways and his most horrendous crime, the murd ers of computer engineer William Croyton, Croyton's wife and two of their t hree children. The only child left alive, nine-year-old Theresa, is known a s the Sleeping Doll. Pell, charismatic and diabolically intelligent, contin ually eludes capture, but Dance, a specialist in interrogation and kinesics (or body language), is never more than a few suspenseful minutes behind. D ance is nicely detailed, and procedural scenes where she uses somatic cues to ferret out liars are fascinating. The book sags in its long middle, but toward the end Deaver digs into his bottomless bag of unexpected twists and turns, keeping readers wide-eyed with surprise, and leaving them looking f orward to more of the perspicacious Dance., Fine

SPEAKING IN TONGUES

Imprint: Coronet Books, 1999
Binding: Paperback

Before he launched his praised and popular series about quadriplegic crimin ologist Lincoln Rhyme (The Empty Chair, etc.), Deaver made his reputation w ith tricky, stylish thrillers such as Praying for Sleep and Manhattan Is My Beat. This slick novel is a throwback to those books and Deaver's first wh olly outside the Rhyme universe since A Maiden's Grave. The basic plot is s imple. An insane but intensely charismatic psychiatrist, Aaron Matthews, fo r reasons revealed only near book's end, kidnaps his patient, alienated Meg an McCall, the young adult daughter of former Virginia prosecutor Tate Coll ier, and imprisons her in an abandoned mental institution. Tate and his est ranged wife go looking for Megan and enlist the cops in their search. Much violence ensues. Deaver's characters are workable but not deep, though ther e's some psychological probing along the fault lines dividing Tate, his wif e and their daughter. The novel's primary appeal arises from its thrills, w hich are plentiful. Like James Patterson, Deaver writes dialogue-driven pro se, in short, strong sentences and paragraphs that demand little from the r eader while seizing attention to the max. Tate and his wife are forgettable heroes, but Deaver tells some of the story from feisty Megan's gripping PO V, as she fights back against her captorAone dandy villain who delights in conning others through disguise and misdirection, allowing for plenty of pl ot curves., Very Good
