ATLAS OF ARCHAEOLOGY: THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO THE LOCATION, HISTORY AND SIG NIFICANCE OF THE WORLD'S MOST IMPORTANT ARCHAEOLOGICA
Imprint: DK ADULT, 1998
Binding: Hardcover
Unearth and explore the fascinating worlds of our ancestors from the earlie st human to the Industrial Age. From the discovery of a Bronze Age ritual monument to the reconstruction of a classic Roman villa and the piecing together of a New World settlement, this highly illustrated atlas is a compelling guide to both recent and historic archaeological sites around the world. Mick Aston and Tim Taylor inspire us with their enthusiasm for archaeology to look at the evidence of the past all around us. Unearthing a range of sites from early cities to medieval castles and Industrial Age factories, they reveal the activities that took place and make detailed identifications of key objects found there. The Atlas of Archaeology is sumptuously illustrated with photographs of the artifacts found at each site, followed by a detailed full-color drawing of the site as it would have appeared originally. Photographs of archaeologists at work and explanations of their techniques provide the technical information that is the basis of all archaeological digs. Fourteen full- color maps show more than 1,200 sites around the world, and accompanying profiles give the location of each, the date of discovery, and the key finds. Lavishly illustrated and expertly researched, this fascinating guide to the world of archaeology will encourage all those interested in the past to take a completely fresh and informed look at their surroundings., Very Good

Athill, Diana
SOMEWHERE TOWARDS THE END: A MEMOIR
Imprint: W. W. Norton & Company, 2009
Binding: Hardcover
A crisp clean hardcover, no markings throughout: When it comes to facing old age, writes Athill, there are no lessons to be learnt, no discoveries to be made, no solutions to offer. As the acclaimed British memoirist (who wrote about her experiences as a book editor in Stet) pushes past 90, she realizes that there is not much on record on falling away and resolves to set down some of her observations. She is bluntly unconcerned with conventional wisdom, unapologetically recounting her extended role as the Other Woman in her companion's prior marriage--then explaining how he didn't move in with her until after they'd stopped having sex, which is why it was no big deal for her to invite his next mistress to move in with them to save expenses. She is equally frank in discussing how, as their life turns sad and boring, she copes with his declining health, just as she cared for her mother in her final years. Firmly resolute that no afterlife awaits her, Athill finds just enough optimism in this world to keep her reflections from slipping into morbidity--she may not offer much comfort, but it's a bracing read., Fine/Fine

DR. ATKINS' QUICK AND EASY NEW DIET COOKBOOK
Imprint: Fireside, 1997
Binding: Plastic Comb
"Diet food can be better, richer, and more sumptuous than most everyday foo ds," says Dr. Robert Atkins, author of the massive bestseller, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. Carbohydrates, in his opinion, are the root of metabol ic evil and the source of hyperinsulinemia, a condition that makes it next to impossible to lose weight. Billed as a companion to his Diet Revolution book, this collection of recipes focuses on ultralow- carbohydrate dishes. H is anticarb stance leads to some unconventional dietary advice: "Remember t hat, as a rule, the lower the fat content of a milk product, the higher its carbohydrate grams. Use cream, not skim milk; use sour cream, not yogurt." While these recipes are certainly quick and easy to prepare and feature easy-to-find ingredients, some are very high in fat (Zabaglione, Crab and Avocado Salad, Ham and Cheese Sandwiches, Baked Eggs in Bacon Rings). While it may be true that fat is flavor and is necessary to some extent to keeping blood sugar on an even keel, these recipes won't be helpful for those who are watching their cholesterol or are on similarly restricted diets., Very Good+

It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refer, Very Good

A major event: a new novel by the Whitbread Award winner, her first novel s ince Emotionally Weird, and probably her most commercial book yet. In Cambridge, Jackson Brodie, a private investigator and former police dete ctive, is quietly contemplating life as a divorced father when he is flung into the midst of three resurrected old crimes: a child who mysteriously di sappeared from a tent in her back garden; an unidentified man who marched i nto an office and slashed the throat of a young girl; and a young woman fou nd sitting in her kitchen next to the body of her husband, an axe buried in his head. As he launches into his investigations, and becomes immersed in the demands of the victims' families, Jackson has the sinister feeling that someone is following him. As he begins to unearth secrets that have remained buried i n the past, he is assailed by his former wife's plan to take his young daug hter away to live in New Zealand. At the same time his stalker becomes incr easingly malevolent and dangerous. In digging into the past Jackson seems t o have unwittingly threatened his own future.

THE OASIS GUIDE TO ASPERGER SYNDROME: ADVICE, SUPPORT, INSIGHT, AND INSPIRA TION
Imprint: Crown, 2001
Binding: Hardcover
A crisp clean hardcover, no markings throughout, not an ex-lib: Parents struggling to find answers about their children often have to wade through pedantic and confusing mazes. Frequently, books about medical or developmental conditions offer little more than the author's personal story or a textbookish monotone. Refreshingly, these authors delve into the shady, often misunderstood world of pervasive developmental disorders, of which perhaps the most well-known is autism, with clarity, warmth and amazing depth, focusing on Asperger Syndrome (AS). The authors present unfamiliar terms and jargon with full explanations, and with none of the patronizing tone sometimes encountered in the medical world. The reader is not left with the personal story alone, and forced to go off on her own expedition for information. The authors (both mothers of AS children) effectively trace this disorder from the onset of symptoms through adulthood. While most parents may be tempted to skip straight to Chapter 2 to devour the list of telltale signs and apply them to their own child, they would do well to start at the beginning. The book grew out of the authors' OASIS Web site (Online Asperger Syndrome Information and Support), which has furthered AS research immeasurably (the site's response rates alone provide important information about potential numbers of people with AS). These authors have certainly done their homework. Besides invaluable practical information, parents and other interested persons will find comfort in the book's welcoming tone and the knowledge that they are not alone., Near Fine/Very Good

MEDITATIONS
Imprint: Empire Books
Binding: Paperback
A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. One measure, perhaps, of a book's worth, is its intergenerational pliancy: do new readers acquire it and interpret it afresh down through the ages? The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, translated and introduced by Gregory Hays, by that standard, is very worthwhile, indeed. Hays suggests that its most recent incarnation--as a self-help book--is not only valid, but may be close to the author's intent. The book, which Hays calls, fondly, a "haphazard set of notes," is indicative of the role of philosophy among the ancients in that it is "expected to provide a 'design for living.'" And it does, both aphoristically ("Think of yourself as dead. You have lived your life. Now take what's left and live it properly.") and rhetorically ("What is it in ourselves that we should prize?"). Whether these, and other entries ("Enough of this wretched, whining monkey life.") sound life-changing or like entries in a teenager's diary is up to the individual reader, as it should be. Hays's introduction, which sketches the life of Marcus Aurelius (emperor of Rome A.D. 161-180) as well as the basic tenets of stoicism, is accessible and jaunty. --H. O'Billovich, Very Good

EMMA
Imprint: Oxford University Press, 1998
Binding: Paperback
Of all Jane Austen's heroines, Emma Woodhouse is the most flawed, the most infuriating, and, in the end, the most endearing. Pride and Prejudice's Liz zie Bennet has more wit and sparkle; Catherine Morland in Northanger Abbey more imagination; and Sense and Sensibility's Elinor Dashwood certainly mo re sense--but Emma is lovable precisely because she is so imperfect. Austen only completed six novels in her lifetime, of which five feature young wom en whose chances for making a good marriage depend greatly on financial iss ues, and whose prospects if they fail are rather grim. Emma is the exceptio n: "Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to dis tress or vex her." One may be tempted to wonder what Austen could possibly find to say about so fortunate a character. The answer is, quite a lot., Very Good

PERSUASION
Imprint: Digireads.com, 2005
Binding: Paperback
A crisp clean softcover, no markings throughout: Anne Elliot, heroine of Austen's last novel, did something we can all relate to: Long ago, she let the love of her life get away. In this case, she had allowed herself to be persuaded by a trusted family friend that the young man she loved wasn't an adequate match, social stationwise, and that Anne could do better. The novel opens some seven years after Anne sent her beau packing, and she's still alone. But then the guy she never stopped loving comes back from the sea. As always, Austen's storytelling is so confident, you can't help but allow yourself to be taken on the enjoyable journey., Near Fine

PERSUASION
Imprint: Wordsworth Editions Ltd, 1998
Binding: Paperback
'All the privilege I claim for my own sex...is that of loving longest, when existence or when hope is gone.'. Anne Elliot's heartfelt words strike the keynote of Jane Austen's last completed novel. It features a heroine older and wiser than her predecessors in earlier books, and its tone is more int imate and sober as Jane Austen unfolds a simple love- story. She described h er heroine in a letter as 'almost too good for me': Anne Elliot's goodness is not of the cloying kind, but an unsentimental quality that, combined wit h stoicism and integrity, enables her to find happiness in love after seven years when it seemed she had for ever put an end to such a prospect., Good
