AUDSLEY, George Ashdown and BOWES, James Lord.
Keramic Art of Japan. In Two Volumes.

Imprint: 1875
Binding: Hardback

Henry Southeron & Co, London. 1875. (Preface dated 1879). Folio. Bound in full scarlet morocco gilt, with gilt cranes and floral devices to spines and upper boards. All page edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Ex-ref-library with two plates to front pastedowns with a neat oval blind-stamp to top corner of margins of illustrations, not affecting the plates. Vol. 1: 4 page preface; 71 page essay on the Art of Japan, and 61 pages on Keramic Art of Japan. Interlaced with colour and b&w plates of designs and patterns. Vol 2: 51 plates of examples of Keramic pieces. Some sepia, mostly magnificent colour prints, each with description. To the rear, a list of marks for each make. All plates are present, but there is some water damage which has affected only the sepia prints, not the colour ones. 7.5cm x 3.5cm portion cut from bottom corner of front endpaper. Professionally re-cased with original boards and spine laid down. The water damage has affected the boards, mainly of Vol. 1, around the lower outer corners. Generally the boards are a little scuffed. This is a truly beautiful and very sound set, despite its history in a reference library.
