8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. CV4 - A first edition (stated) hardcover book SIGNED by Becky Patterson on the half-title page in very good condition in fair dust jacket that is mylar protected. Dust jacket significantly wrinkled, scattered scratches, rubbing, scuffing, and stains, tanning and shelf wear. Book lightly cocked and bowed, some some bumped corners, water soiled patches on some inside pages, light tanning and shelf wear. 8.5"x5.75", 268 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Who was Hondo Crouch? He was the "Clown Prince of Luckenbach," an entertainer of star quality who refused for years to make money from his comic gifts. He was a rancher. A philosopher. An artist. A poet. A music man and inspiration for the hit song "Let's Go to Luckenbach, Texas." Hondo Crouch was a Texas folk hero. Before he died in 1976, Hondo helped stage at Luckenbach a series of zany happenings - from all-female chili cook-offs to Great World's Fairs - that become so popular the tiny town almost got trampled out of existence. But there was more to Hondo than spectacular spoofs. He had a gift for seeing past facades and into the true nature of the human comedy - and tragedy - that we all live inside our heats. His style ranged from lighthearted teasing to barbed satire, from pratfalls and pranks to rueful reflection. In Hondo, My Father Becky Crouch Patterson writes poignantly of the pain as well as the laughter of Hondo's life. Her book defies classification: a moving family story, a humorist's delight, a treasury of folklore. Above all, Hondo: My Father is the supremely human story of the funniest man in Texas.. A Proud Past - A Pictorial History of Muskogee, Oklahoma
Imprint: Marceline, Missouri, D-Books Publishing, Inc., 1998
Binding:
Hardback
4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. N5 - A hardcover book in very good condition that has some bumped corners and dents, some scattered light scratches, rubbing and scuffing, tanning and light shelf wear with no dust jacket. 11.25"x8.75", 128 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Muskogee is the eleventh-largest city in Oklahoma and the county seat of Muskogee County. Home to Bacone College, it lies approximately 48 miles (77 km) southeast of Tulsa. French fur traders were believed to have established a temporary village near the future Muskogee in 1806, but the first permanent European-American settlement was established in 1817 on the south bank of the Verdigris River, north of present-day Muskogee. After the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830 under President Andrew Jackson, the Muscogee Creek Indians were one of the "Five Civilized Tribes" forced out of the American Southeast to Indian Territory. They were accompanied by their slaves. The Indian Agency, a two-story stone building, was built here in Muskogee. It was a site for meetings among the leaders of the Five Civilized Tribes. Today it serves as a museum. At the top of what is known as Agency Hill, it is within Honor Heights Park on the west side of Muskogee. In 1872, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad was extended to the area. A federal court was established in Muskogee in 1889, around the same time that Congress opened portions of Indian Territory to non-Native settlers via land rushes. The city was incorporated on March 19, 1898. Ohio native Charles N. Haskell moved to the city in March 1901. He was instrumental in building on the land rush; he stimulated expansion of the city of more than 4,000 people to a center of business and industry by 1910, with a population of more than 25,000 inhabitants. Haskell built the first five-story business block in Oklahoma Territory; he built and owned fourteen brick buildings in the city. Most importantly, he organized and built most of the railroads running into the city, which connected it to other markets and centers of population, stimulating its business and retail, and attracting new residents. As Muskogee's economic and business importance grew, so did its political power. In the years before the territory was admitted as a state, the Five Civilized Tribes continued to work on alternatives to keep some independence from European Americans. They met together August 21, 1905 to propose the State of Sequoyah, to be controlled by Native Americans. They met in Muskogee to draft its constitution, planning to have Muskogee serve as the State's capital. The proposal was vetoed by US President Theodore Roosevelt and mostly ignored by Congress; the proposed State of Sequoyah was never authorized. The US admitted the State of Oklahoma to the Union on November 16, 1907 as the 46th state. Muskogee was the operational headquarters of the Muskogee Roads, four regional rail carriers under common management. The first was the Midland Valley Railroad, chartered in 1903. The three carriers surviving until 1963 were sold to the Texas & Pacific, which was a subsidiary of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Muskogee was on the route of the Jefferson Highway established in 1915. That road ran more than 2,300 miles from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to New Orleans, Louisiana. Muskogee attracted national and international attention when, in May 2008, voters elected John Tyler Hammons as mayor. Nineteen years old at the time of his election, Hammons is among the youngest mayors in American history.. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: No Jacket

Bela Karolyi and Nancy Ann Richardson
Feel No Fear: The Power, Passion, and Politics of a Life in Gymnastics
Imprint: New York, Hyperion, 1994
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed
8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. CD4 - A first edition (stated with complete numberline) hardcover book SIGNED by Marta E. Karolyi (wife) and Andrea Karolyi (daughter) on the half-title page in very good condition in very good dust jacket that is mylar protected. Dust jacket has some wrinkling, crease, and few chipping/bug damage on the edges and corners, moderate tanning and light shelf wear. Book has some bumped corners, wrinkling on the spine edges, a few chipping and dent on the cover edges, light tanning and shelf wear. 9.5"x6.5", 239 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. In 1992, Time magazine reported that "in the world of gymnastics, no figure looms larger," and named Bela Karolyi the "World's Most Famous Gymnastics Coach." Paul Ziert, Bart Conner's coach, says of him, "He is brilliant. And he represents absolute commitment to gymnastics." Even Mike Jacki, the former head of the U.S. Gymnastics Federation, says "the one thing over the past ten years that's had the most effect on U.S. gymnastics, overwhelmingly, is the presence of Bela Karolyi... he is a supreme student of the game." Feel No Fear is the unforgettable, un-put-down-able story of the most influential, charismatic, and controversial gymnastics coach in the world, who, for the first time, shares the secret strategies that have contributed to his success. Karolyi has created more gymnastics champions than any other coach in the sport, in both his native country, Rumania, and his adopted country, America. His fierce determination and unique vision enabled him to redefine the entire sport of gymnastics, from the unforgettable grace of Nadia Comaneci to the powerful explosive strength of Mary Lou Retton and Kim Zmeskal. But his story is not just about creating gymnastic superstars. Bela Karolyi's story is about facing and overcoming tremendous adversity. It's about fighting for what's right, and pounding your fist and raising your voice against injustice. Karolyi fought against the constraints of Communism, and the calculated malice of Rumania's secret police. Forced to defect from his native country, he left behind his six-year-old daughter whom he knew he might never see again. Once in America, Karolyi struggled to master a new language and a new culture, all the while working to create a life for himself and his family. As a U.S. gymnastics coach, Karolyi proved that American gymnasts could be internationally competitive - an accomplishment that American coaches had yet to achieve. The struggle to reshape U.S. gymnastics led Karolyi to raise his voice against the scoring controversies that threatened and sometimes eclipsed the careers of Mary Lou Retton, Kim Zmeskal, Kristie Phillips, and Diane Durham, as well as against the biases and politics that are part of the U.S. and international system of the sport. Once again, he made powerful enemies. Bela Karolyi has told his athletes countless times to "feel no fear." In his book, he, too follows his own advice. Choosing to look back on his triumphs, tragedies, mistakes, and misgivings. Karolyi fearlessly unfolds his life story, and names the players - the good, the bad and the truly frightening - that made his life a compelling drama.. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover.
