Aguilar Camin, Hector
El Resplandor de la Madera (The Glow of the Wood)

Imprint: Colonia del Valle, Mexico, DF, Aguilar, Altea, Taurus, Alfaguara, SA, 1999
Edition: Spanish Language Edition
Binding: Softback

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A1 - A Spanish languag edition trade paperback ex-library book in good+ to very good- condition. A tight, clean, sound copy in color wraps with minor overall shelf wear with the ususal library stamp and label on the top outside paper edges and copyright page plus some label staining and light surface wear on the back endpaper from a library pocket. Hector Aguilar Camin (1946) was born in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, in southeastern Mexico. His narrative work includes: 'La decadencia del dratón' (The decline of the Dragon) 1984, 'Morir en el golfo' (Dying in the Gulf) 1985, 'La guerra de Galio' (The Gallium War) 1991, 'Historias conversadas' (Conversational Stories) 1992, 'El error de la luna' (The error of the moon) 1995 and 'Un soplo en el rio' (A Murmur in the River) 1998. He received the Premio Nacional de Periodismo (National Journalism Award) 1986, Ichiiko Prize for Cultural Works (1997) and Mazatlán Prize for Literature (1998). 'Es resplandor de la madera' (The Glow of the Wood) narrates the loss of familiar realm of Caesars and their reconciliation to the mills of time through art of love and memory. The novel goes back and forth from the mythical past of the first Caesars to the final heirs to that lost power and its legend. Like any reconciliation, that of the Caesars is a catharsis of grief and an acceptance of the world as it is: their covenant with their inner demons as payment for their answered prayers. Novel and epic, 'Es resplandor de la madera' (The Glow of the Wood) is the story of several generations of Caesars all marked by an obsession to fulfill their dreams, only to see these dreams dissolve when they achieve the power to achieve them. 'Out of the crooked timber of humanity, no straight thing was ever made', says Kant in a section of this book. One should add: without the crooked timber of humanity, no literature worthy of the name could ever have been written. Satisfacción garantizada (satisfaction guaranteed).. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Heart-wrenching and darkly funny, Family Life is a universal story of a boy torn between duty and his own survival. 8.5"x5.75", 218 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Hailed as a "supreme storyteller" (Philadelphia Inquirer) for his "cunning, dismaying and beautifully conceived" fiction (New York Times), Akhil Sharma is possessed of a narrative voice "as hypnotic as those found in the pages of Dostoyevsky" (The Nation). In his highly anticipated second novel, Family Life, he delivers a story of astonishing intensity and emotional precision. We meet the Mishra family in Delhi in 1978, where eight-year-old Ajay and his older brother Birju play cricket in the streets, waiting for the day when their plane tickets will arrive and they and their mother can fly across the world and join their father in America. America to the Mishras is, indeed, everything they could have imagined and more: when automatic glass doors open before them, they feel that surely they must have been mistaken for somebody important. Pressing an elevator button and the elevator closing its doors and rising, they have a feeling of power at the fact that the elevator is obeying them. Life is extraordinary until tragedy strikes, leaving one brother severely brain-damaged and the other lost and virtually orphaned in a strange land. Ajay, the family's younger son, prays to a God he envisions as Superman, longing to find his place amid the ruins of his family's new life.. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Quang Nam province, Vietnam, and its capital of Hoi An, was presently in the hands of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) but was contested for overall dominance by the Viet Cong (VC), the guerilla fighters who were supplied by the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). Assisting the ARVN in their struggle against the VC, a contingent of American Military Advisors, members of the Provincial Advisory Team (PAT) #1, were mainly responsible for the training of the ARVN troops of the 51st Regiment of the 1st ARVN Division. But the South Vietnamese troops had not been very proficient in their battles against the VC for control of the province. Thus, the American top command, MACV (Military Advisory Command, Vietnam), had doubts assigning an important mission to PAT#1. The mission was so secret that it was decided to keep it from the knowledge of the ARVNs until overall effectiveness of the advisor team could be determined. Thus, the American Colonel of PAT #1 found himself at odds with his Vietnamese counterpart, the Colonel of the 51st Regiment. Bot Colonels also had differences with their respective higher command on the responsibility for military operations as they prepared for an unforeseen battle that could be the turning point of war..
