During 1943 and 1944, the extermination camps were working at a furious rate to kill the hundreds of thousands of people shipped to them by rail from almost every country within the German sphere of influence, and by the spring of 1944, up to 8,000 people were being gassed every day at Auschwitz (USHMM, 2012). Passover 1944 began on April 8, the day that the roundups of the Jews of Carpatho-Ruthenia and northern Hungary started. On April 14, the last day of the Holiday, László Endre & László Baky (German-installed heads of the Ministry of the Interior) and Eichmann made the official decision to deport all the Jews of Hungary. With ten illustrations; an early 19th century German Orthodox Haggadah originally compiled by Wolf Heidenheim in 1822. Published for German-Jewish refugees in Switzerland under the auspices of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities, founded in 1904 to help protect the general interest of Jews in Switzerland; during the second world war, the Federation helped support the refugee community in Switzerland: “Prior to and during the Second World War, Switzerland gave refuge to about 23,000 Jewish refugees although the government decided that Switzerland would serve only as a country of transit. These Jews were protected during the Holocaust due to Swiss neutrality. The Jewish refugees, however, did not receive the financial support from the government that non-Jewish refugees received. The war had taken a terrible toll in casualties (more than 1% of the country's population was killed) , and the nation's fledgling economy was devastated. Compounding the dire situation was the fact that Israel faced economic demands unique to the new state, most especially the arrival of hundreds of thousands of immigrants. In Israel's early years, immigrants generally fell into two categories: Holocaust survivors and Jewish refugees from Arab countries, ” who poured in as the British Blockade ended and Middle Eastern Jews fled or were expelled from their home countries. “Short on money, the country suffered food shortages and rationing, and the new arrivals had to be housed in primitive conditions. The front board indicates that this was a presentation copy from J. W. Forney to E. B. Hart. Forney was John Weiss Forney, the Clerk of the House of Representatives from 1851 to 1856, and then 1860-1861. Hart was Emanuel B. Hart, Representative from New York State from 1851 to 1853. Given the date of this book (1854 on the title page, 1853 on the engraved title page), this was likely presented to Hart after his leaving the House as a memento for his service. Hart was the second Jewish member of the United States House of Representatives, and the first from New York State. Who was”elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress (1851-1853). He was later appointed by President James Buchanan to serve as surveyor of the Port of New York from 1857 to 1861. He also served as member of the city board of assessors. He served as president of Mount Sinai Hospital from 1870 to 1876 and New York City's commissioner of immigration from 1870 to 1873. He also worked as treasurer of the Society for the Relief of Poor Hebrews. He was a presidential elector in 1868 (Wikipedia).The text contains the Constitution, resolutions from each state ratifying it, and other charts and documents related to the history of Congress. He served from 1957 as director of the university's Hebrew language and literature section, and from 1962 as director of its Institute of Hebrew Studies. In 1967, he was elected president of Dropsie College (later University) . Nemoy, (1901–) , was a scholar and librarian. Born in Balta, Russia, Nemoy studied classical and Slavic languages at the University of Odessa. After moving to the U. S. In 1923, he studied Semitic languages at Yale University (1924–29) . He served as a librarian at the Society for the Propagation of Knowledge, Odessa, Russia (1914–21) , the Academic Library of Odessa (1919–21) , and the University Library of Lvov, Poland (1922–23) before assuming his duties at Yale in 1923. Rising to the post of curator of Hebrew and Arabic literature at Yale's Sterling Memorial Library, upon his retirement he became scholar-in-residence at Dropsie University, Philadelphia. Abraham "Abe" Cahan (1860 – 1951) was a "Belarusian-born Jewish-American socialist newspaper editor, novelist, and politician....[He] arrived by steamboat in Philadelphia on June 6 of 1882 at the age of 21 and immediately traveled to New York, where he would live for the remainder of his life.....Cahan was the progenitor of Yiddish language publishing and production in America....Cahan is most famous for his journalism and his role in the production of the renowned The Jewish Daily Forward (ForvertsCahan founded the Forward with its first issue coming out in 1887, while he was still juggling several newspaper jobs....Cahan took absolute control of the paper in 1903 and ran it full-time until 1946. Reprinted from “Accrington Observer & Times. ” “Chief Rabbi Prof. Israel Abrahams of The Great Synagogue, Cape Town, South Africa, was the Chief Rabbi of the United Council of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations (Cape Province and South West Africa ) and also Northern Rhodesia, from 1937 to 1968, after which he and his wife made Aliyah to Israel. He was the head of the department of Jewish Studies at The University of Cape Town. He was one of the founders of Herzlia School. In South Africa he wrote several books of sermons including ‘Pathways in Judaism’, ‘Living Waters’ and ‘The Birth of a Community’ - a history of Western Province Jewry from its earliest times to the end of the South African War, 1902. He translated the scholarly works of Prof Umberto Cassuto from Hebrew to English, both while in South Africa and later in Jerusalem. In Israel he went on to translate works by Prof Urbach and others, until his death after a short illness in October 1973. Chief Rabbi Prof Abrahams was born in Vilna and came to London as a small child, where he later received his Rabbinic Ordination from Jews College. He received his degrees at University of London.
