Antin, Mary. Foreword by Israel Zangwill
FROM PLOTZK TO BOSTON

Imprint: Boston: W.B. Clarke, 1899
Edition: First Edition
Binding: paperback

2nd printing (same year as the tiny 1st printing of 50 copies), Original Paper Wrappers, 8vo, 80 pages. Singerman 5511. “From Plotzk to Boston is a memoir by author and immigration activist. It chronicles her emigration from her hometown of Polotsk in the Russian Empire (now modern Belarus) to the United States in 1894, focusing primarily on her observations of life in unfamiliar surroundings, the emotional trials endured by her family, and the hardships that accompanied their passage to and eventual settlement in Boston, Massachusetts. Her first major publication, it laid the groundwork for her later autobiography and most famous work, The Promised Land (1912). Largely marketed towards Boston's community of Jewish philanthropists, From Plotzk to Boston immediately sold out its initial pressrun in 1899, with Lina Hecht, one of Antin's major benefactors, purchasing the entire first run of 50 copies, requiring the printing of a second edition. Contemporary reviews were also generally positive, with the New York Times concluding, ‘This story, in all its guilelessness, appealing as it does to human love, will certainly please readers, irrespective of race or creed.’ Offering similar praise for her writing and the perceived authenticity of her work, the Boston Herald stated, ‘The whole narrative is very agreeably and naturally written, and nothing is introduced but what the child saw with her own eyes, endured in her own flesh and blood, thought in her own little head.’ Other publications drew favorable comparisons with Israel Zangwill, the author of the book's preface and an accomplished Jewish writer himself, with the Kalamazoo Gazette proclaiming, ‘little Mary promises to become the most forceful Jewish writer of English in the world, not excepting Zangwill himself’” (Encyclopædia Britannica's Guide to Women's History).Mary Antin (born Maryashe Antin; 1881 – 1949) “was an American author and immigration rights activist. She is best known for her 1912 autobiography The Promised Land, an account of her emigration and subsequent Americanization….After its publication, Antin lectured on her immigrant experience to many audiences across the country, and became a major supporter for Theodore Roosevelt and his Progressive Party” (Wikipedia). SUBJECT(S): Jews -- United States -- Biography. Poland -- Plock -- Emigration and immigration. Ocean travel. Ethnic relations. Immigrants. OCLC: 2797453. ANTOPOL (ANTIPOLYE) : SEFER-YIZKOR. ANTOPOL (ANTEPOLIE) YIZKOR BOOK

Imprint: Tel-Aviv: Antopol Committee In Israel, 1972
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover

1st edition, original cloth with dust jacket, 4to, 11 pages + 754, 170 columns. Illustrations throughout. In Hebrew, with an English section. “This is the story of a vanished world, the shtetel of Antopol. The material for this presentation was gathered painstakingly over a long period of time by a relatively small group of dedicated people who wished to preserve its memory and heritage for the descendants of its martyred. More than a history, this story is very personal because our parents, grandparents and great-great grandparents going back many generations came from this community. This is also a place whose many sons and daughters in years past left to seek a new and free life. Many achieved success and prominence all over the world - the United States, South Africa, Argentina, and other areas of the globe. We are the fortunate descendants of these hardy forebears and pioneers. It is hard to imagine that only a few decades ago there existed a vibrant, living community called Antopol, with its men, women and children; its market place, stores, schools. Beth medroshim (Houses of Prayer) , orphanages, Gmilas Hasodim (free loan society for the needy) , newspaper stands - all so familiar and so dear to memory. This little town was typical of hundreds of similar smaller and larger communities. And, like Atlantis, or some past people recounted in a saga, it suddenly vanished in the most bloody massacre in all of history. But this presentation is for the living - to convey to us, the ‘she'erit’ or ‘last remnant’ of descendants, something of the heritage, spirit and, record of the life of this community which many of us know only in an abstract and detached way. The task is too great, and our resources too limited to write the whole story. This little volume, condensed and translated into English, is both a record and a personal memorial to a profoundly meaningful and warmly nostalgic past. ” (foreword from the English version of this book) SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- Belarus -- Antopal’. Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) . Ethnic relations. OCLC: 19155706. Dust jacket has some tearing and damp stains, cover corners are dented, some wear on bottom of spine, page edges slightly yellowed, internally very good. Good Condition overall. FLAGS OVER THE WARSAW GHETTO: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE WARSAW GHETTO UPRISING

Imprint: Jerusalem; Gefen Pub. House, 2011
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

Softbound. 8vo. VII, 406, [16] pages. 22 cm. First English edition. Translation of “Degalim me-`al ha-Geto. “ Publishers description: “In this groundbreaking work, Israel’s former Minister of Defense, Professor Moshe Arens, recounts a true tale of daring, courage, and sacrifice that should be accurately told – out of respect for and in homage to the fighters who rose against the German attempt to liquidate the Warsaw ghetto, and made a last-ditch fight for the honor of the Jewish people. The generally accepted account of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is incomplete. The truth begins with the existence of not one, but two resistance organizations in the ghetto. Two young men, Mordechai Anielewicz of the Jewish Fighting Organization (ZOB) , and Pawel Frenkel of the Jewish Military Organization (ZZW) , rose to lead separate resistance organizations in the ghetto, which did not unite despite the desperate battle they were facing. Included is the complete text of “The Stroop Report” translated into English. Subjects: World War, 1939-1945 - Jewish resistance - Poland - Warsaw. Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) - Poland - Warsaw. Jews - Poland - Warsaw - History - 20th century. Warsaw (Poland) - History - Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, 1943. Near fine condition. (HOLO2-99-12)

Argens, Jean-Baptiste De Boyer, Marquis D'
THE JEWISH SPY: BEING A PHILOSOPHICAL, HISTORICAL AND CRITICAL CORRESPONDENCE, BY LETTERS WITCH LATELY PASS'D BETWEEN CERTAIN JEWS IN TUKEY, ITALY, FRANCE & C. TRANSL. FROM THE ORIG. INTO FRENCH, BY THE MARQUIS D'ARGENS, AND NOW DONE INTO ENGLISH

Imprint: London; Printed For D. Browne And R. Hett, 1739
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover

Later half calf and marbled boards. 16mo. Xii, 303, [45] pages. 17 cm. First English edition. Translated from the original into French, by the Marquis d'Argens; and now done into English. A translation of the first 40 letters only of Lettres juives. “The original ‘Lettres juives, ou correspondence philosophique, historique et critique…’ began publication as a series of weekly pamphlets as early as March or April, 1736. By 1737, a year after they were printed at the Hague in book form, they were well known throughout France. … The first English edition, entitled The Jewish Spy, appeared in London in 1739 (first forty letters only) – followed by four more volumes in 1740. The second edition, in five volumes, appeared in 1744. … Matters relating to Jews and Judaism occupy only a small portion of The Jewish Spy, but they engaged some sixteen letters completely [letters 1, 23, 36, etc. ], and references are scattered through no less than seventy others. … D’Argens, though frequently salting his letters with earthy and ribald humor – often anti-clerical, rarely descends to jesting about Jews. … Transparently, the author is no Judaeophile. He offers many harsh chastisements of both Faith and People. Just as he uses Judaism as a constant foil against the weaknesses of Christianity, he exalts Karaism time and again to the detraction of Rabbinism or traditional Judaism. … undoubtedly he helped create the new atmosphere that made Emancipation possible by the end of the century. ” (Stanley Brav, ‘Jews and Judaism in the Jewish Spy’; Studies in Bibliography and Booklore, volume 4, June 1960) . Later fine binding, half calf, raised bands outlined in gilt, title in gilt on spine, marbled boards. Subjects: Jews - Europe. Lettres juives. English. Selections. French Enlightenment. Books published before 1800. OCLC lists 29 copies. Light soiling to corner on title page, otherwise very clean and fresh. Great condition. (SPEC-36-54)
