Africa, North -- History. In: Evidences, 6eme annee, no. 42, septembre-octobre 1954. Other Titles: Evidences. Aron (1905–1983) , was a “French sociologist and writer. Aron, who was born in Paris, taught at Le Havre, Toulouse, Cologne, and Berlin. In 1956 he was appointed professor of sociology at the Sorbonne, and director of studies at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris in 1960. During World War II he was editor of Free France – La France Libre, published in London, and subsequently contributed both as writer and editor to Combat, Le Figaro, and the European Journal of Sociology, and other periodicals. His main interest was the analysis of modern industrial society which, in his opinion, is not so much defined by the class struggle as by the clash of competing political systems. Hence he was rather an exception among French thinkers of his time, and his commitment to liberal democracy set him apart from the then Marxist-dominated intellectual tendencies. Although not involved in Jewish affairs, Aron remained a conscious Jew. In a series of essays published as De Gaulle, Israel and the Jews, he concluded that even if the French president was not himself an antisemite, his notorious press conference after the Six-Day War certainly encouraged the anti-Jewish elements in French society” (Boskoff in EJ 2007) . Binding: Paperback

1st separate edition. Reprinted from The Jewish Forum August and October, 1922. 4to. 11 pages; 25 cm. An article discussing the Jewish textual support for allowing women to take on pulpit roles in congregations. Rabbi David Aronson was a leading rabbi and author. “Born in Russia in 1892, Mr. Aronson attended New York University, Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. After ordination in 1919, Rabbi Aronson served congregations in Salt Lake City and Duluth, Minn. , before joining Beth El in 1924. From 1948 to 1950, he was president of the Rabbinical Assembly of America, an assembly of 1, 200 Conservative rabbis” (NYT 1988) . “Woman is once more on the program. This time she comes chaperoned by the Central Conference of American Rabbis, and is on her way, -no, not to a Sisterhood Whist Party or to a Sabbath school entertainment, -but to assume her place in the pulpit. Henceforth, she may function as a Rebitzin in her own name and of her own right, and not merely as the wife of a ‘He-rabbi. ’ For the Central Conference of American Rabbis decided at its last convention that ‘In view of Jewish teachings and in keeping with the spirit of our age, women cannot be denied the privilege of ordination as rabbis. ’” SUBJECT(S) : Female rabbis, Jewish women, Women leadership. Artef Jubilee Committee
TSEN YOR ARTEF: AROYSGEGEBN TSUM TSEN-YORIKN YUBILEY FUN ARTEF

Imprint: New York; Posy-Shoulson Press, 1937
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

(FT) Suede wraps. 4to. [4], 171, [2], 23 pages. 28 cm. First edition. In Yiddish and English. Added title-page: Ten years Artef; published for the tenth anniversary of the Artef, March, 1937. Extensively illustrated publication for the tenth year anniversary of the radical Yiddish theatre company: “Artef, the radical Yiddish dramatic troupe based in New York during the heyday of the Yiddish theater in America. Begun in the mid-1920s as a study group of amateur worker-actors (at one time there were nine separate studios with over 120 students) , in the 1930s the troupe went professional, putting on at least two and often three new plays per season. With such plays as Jacob Mostel's Strike, Shmuel Godiner's Jim Kooperkop, Avrum Vevioka's Diamonds, and Maxim Gorky's Egor Bulychev and Dostigaev and Others, Artef spread propaganda to the masses. … Ideologically Artef was far left; its hope was a Communist society here in America. As a troupe, its role was ‘agit-prop, ’ to agitate and propagandize, to serve as the cultural representative of radical workers. In fact, most of its tickets were pre-sold through worker unions and, at least in its early years, Artef gave presentations at political events. Its first large-scale production was Mass Play and Ballet of the Russian Revolution, which appeared at the Lenin memorial celebration in Madison Square Garden on January 21, 1928. … Artef's greatest artistic and commercial successes were connected with the talented productions of director Benno Schneider. Schneider, who had been active in the Zionist Habima troupe in Moscow, wed aesthetic excellence to revolutionary ideology with his interpretation of Aristocrats, an adaptation of Sholem Aleichem's Mentshn. Incidentally, Schneider earned such a positive reputation with Artef that he received offers to direct on Broadway, a promotion that cost the radical Yiddish theater dearly. The end of the Artef was gradual, and its causes were closely associated with the reduced role of Yiddish in American life. But there were bright lights before the darkness. During the ‘days of the Popular Front, ’ when the Communists formed associations with less radical leftist parties, the Artef attracted a larger audience, which led to an optimistic expansion that later was responsible for huge financial losses. The darkness occurred at the end of the thirties, when the number of Yiddish speakers began to diminish. The last performance of the Artef was on July 7, 1941. (Review by Dr. Brian Horowitz of “Yiddish Proletarian Theatre: The Art and Politics of the Artef, 1925–1940” written by Edna Nahshon) . Many of the actors and directors in Artef went on to establish solid careers on Broadway, Hollywood, and for those blacklisted, overseas. Subjects: Arbeiter theatre verband, New York. Jewish theater. Theater - New York (State) - New York. Artef - Anniversaries, etc. OCLC lists 29 copies worldwide. With previous owners bookstamp on endpage; that of Wolf Mercur, a playwright, actor, and director in Yiddish films and on Broadway. Very clean and fresh. Very good condition. (ART-18-15)

Asher Evan Hulda Ben Behi
SEFER RABENU BAHYE: BE'UR 'AL HA-TORAH

Imprint: Korets; Ha-Madpisim Avraham Ben Yitshak Ayzik Ve-Eliyahu Ben Ya?akov Segal, 1799
Binding: Hardcover

Later Cloth. Folio. [252, 124] pages. 36 cm. In Hebrew. Sefer Rabenu Bahye be'ur ‘al ha-Torah. By Bahya ben Asher ben Hlava: “one of the most distinguished of the Biblical exegetes of Spain; born about the middle of the thirteenth century at Saragossa; died 1340....Bahya's principal work was his commentary on the Pentateuch, in the preparation of which he thoroughly investigated the works of former Biblical exegetes, using all the methods employed by them in his interpretations. He enumerates the following four methods, all of which in his opinion are indispensable to the exegete: (1) The 'Peshat, ' or the simple and direct exposition advocated by Rashi and Hananel ben Hushiel, whom Bahya recognizes as authorities, and whose works he industriously employs. (2) The 'Midrash, ' or the haggadic exegesis, accorded considerable space in his commentary; there being scarcely a haggadic work which has not been employed by him. However, he usually confines himself to a literal quotation without further exposition. (3) The method of Reason, or philosophical exegesis, the aim of which is to demonstrate that philosophical truths are already embodied in Holy Writ, which as a work of God transcends all the wisdom of man. He therefore recognizes the results of philosophical thought only in so far as they do not conflict with Scripture and tradition. (4) The method of the Cabala, termed by him 'the path of light, ' which the truth-seeking soul must travel. It is by means of this method, Bahya believes, that the deep mysteries hidden in the Scriptural word may be revealed, and many a dark passage elucidated. Bahya's commentary derives a particular charm from its form. Each parashah, or weekly lesson, is prefaced by an introduction preparing the reader for the fundamental ideas to be discussed; and this introduction bears a motto in the form of some verse selected from the Proverbs. Furthermore, by the questions that are frequently raised the reader is compelled to take part in the author's mental processes; the danger of monotony being also thereby removed. The commentary was first printed at Naples in 1492; and the favor which it enjoyed is attested by the numerous supercommentaries published on it. Owing to the large space devoted to the Cabala, the work was particularly valuable to cabalists, although Bahya also availed himself of non-Jewish sources. Later editions of the commentary appeared at Pesaro, 1507, 1514, and 1517; Constantinople, 1517; Rimini, 1524; Venice, 1544, 1546, 1559, 1566, and later.” (1906 JE). Printed in Korets, Ukraine. Carmoly (1802-1875) was a "rabbi, writer, and editor. Carmoly, who was born in Sulz, Alsace, studied under distinguished rabbis in Colmar. After spending some years examining Hebrew manuscripts in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, he took up a rabbinical post in Brussels in 1832. He resigned after seven years because of criticism of his reformist tendencies and moved to Frankfurt. There he devoted himself to the collection and study of ancient manuscripts and books, about which he published articles in Hebrew, French, and German journals. However, he was suspected by the Hebrew scholars of his time of carelessness and even forgery. His Hebrew books include: Toledot Gedolei Yisrael Sippur Eldad ha-Dani, Mevasseret Ziyyon, concerning the ten lost tribes; Elleh ha-Massa'ot, about travels in Palestine; and Ha-Orevim u-Venei Yonah, a genealogy of the Rapoport family. He also wrote a coronation poem, in Hebrew and French, in praise of Louis-Philippe of France. Carmoly was, in addition, one of the pioneers in the study of the history of Jewish medicine and Jewish physicians, and wrote Histoire des Medecins juifs. He edited Revue Orientale, contributing most of the articles himself" (Cohen and Kressel in EJ, 2007). Chipping to edges of pages. Hinge repair. Wear to corners of cover. Some stained pages. SITAH MEQUBEZET : WE-HU ASEFAT ZEQENIM ... AL MASEKET NAZIR ...

Imprint: Ofen: Konigl. Ungarische Universitats Buchdruckerey,, 1820
Binding: Hardback

Hardcover, folio, 80 pages, 36 cm. In Hebrew. Transliterated title on title page: Schita Mekobezes. Other Titles: Schita Mekobezes. Bezalel ben Abraham Ashkenazi (Hebrew: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ) (ca. 1520 - ca. 1592) was a rabbi and scholar of the Talmud who lived in the Palestine during the 16th century. He is best known as the author of Shittah Mekubetzet, a commentary on the Talmud. He is very straightforward in his writings and occasionally offers textual amendments to the Talmud. His most important disciple was the famous Kabbalist, Rabbi Isaac Luria....[T]he Shittah Mekubezet, (trans. Gathered Interpretation) …is a collection of glosses on the greater part of the Talmud, after the fashion of the Tosafot; and in it Ashkenazi combined much original and foreign material. The great value of the Shittah lies principally in the fact that Ashkenazi gives therein numerous excerpts from Talmudic commentaries which have not otherwise been preserved. The Shittah contains expositions of the Talmud taken from the works of the Spaniards Nahmanides, ben Adret, and Yom-Tov of Seville, and from those of the Frenchmen Abraham ben David, Baruch ben Samuel, Isaac of Chinon, etc. The study of the Shittah is particularly valuable for understanding the Tosafists, because the work contains some of the older and inedited Tosafot; besides, glosses of R. Asher ben Jehiel and of the disciples of R. Perez are partly contained in it. Ashkenazi designed the Shittah to cover the whole Talmud; but only the following tracts were interpreted: Bezah, Baba Kamma, Baba Batra, Baba Metzia, Ketubot, Nedarim, Nazir, Sotah, and the order of Kodashim (excepting Hullin) — the last-mentioned in the Romm edition of the Talmud. (Wikipedia 2010) . OCLC lists 1 copy worldwide (Bibliotheek Universiteit Van Amsterdam) . Ex-library with usual marking. (Rab-47-2), Meyer Knobloch interested

Askenazy, Szymon.
Dantzig & Poland.

Binding: Hardcover

London: G. Allen & Unwin, 1921. Cloth. 8vo. 132 pages. Originally published in Polish. It was intended to foreshadow the history of Danzig prior to its expected incorporation into Poland, something which did not eventuate. “Askenazy studied at the universities of Warsaw and Goettingen and taught modern history at the University of Lemberg from 1897 to 1914, the last seven years as professor. During World War I he was a member of the Polish National Council in Switzerland. After the establishment of an independent Poland he served as its first representative at the League of Nations until 1923, when the National Democratic government dismissed him from his post because he was a Jew. In 1929 he discovered manuscripts relating to Napoleon, which he published under the title RMkopisy Napoleona, 1793–1795. Askenazy raised a generation of students of Polish history who came to hold prominent positions in their country's cultural and political life. In 1912 a quarterly journal for the study of Jewish history in Poland, Kwartalnik pocwiMcony badaniu przescGocci 'Zyd\w w Polsce, was founded on his initiative. As a Jew, he was regarded as a spokesman for the assimilationists” (Nathan Michael Gelber in EJ) . SUBJECT(S) : World War, 1914-1918 - Territorial questions - Poland. Some bumping to edges and spine. The work opens with a description of the Hebrew literature scene in Europe prior to the publication of Ha-Shiloah, and follows the fate of the periodical during its first period (1896-1902) under the editorship of Ahad Ha'Am. The author describes in detail Ahad Ha'AM editorial policy, the controversy with the 'Young Writers' and financial and administrative problems faced by the editor of the stuggling journal. The period 1903-1919 during which Ha-Shiloah was edited by Joseph Klausner with Haim Nahman Bialik as co-editor, constitutes the second part of the work.
