Ausschuss Fur Deutsche Einheit
GLOBKE: DER BUROKRAT DES TODES = BUREAUCRAT OF DEATH = BUREAUCRATE DE LA MORT.
Imprint: [East Germany]; Ausschuss Fur Deutsche Einheit, [1963]
Binding:
Hardback
Softbound. 8vo. 264 pages. 24 cm. In German with parallel English and French translations. Extended title: “Bureaucrat of death; a documentation showing the capital guild of Bonn's top official in the liquidation of the Jews. ” Published by the Committee for German Unity, an East German governmental committee. As the title indicates, this work constitutes an extensive documentation of the Nazi past of Hans Globke, Director of the Federal Chancellory of West Germany between 1953 and 1963 and as such one of the closest aides to Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. Globke's key position as a national security advisor to Adenauer despite his involvement with the Office for Jewish Affairs during the Holocaust and in anticommunist activities in post-war West Germany made both the West German government and CIA officials wary of exposing his past. This led for instance to the withholding of Adolf Eichmann's alias from the Israeli government and Nazi hunters in the late '50s, and CIA pressure in 1960 on Life magazine to delete references to Globke from its recently obtained Eichmann memoirs. An interesting period piece for post-war German history, which serves as a searing indictment of the hushed up nazi histories of many members of the ruling class of West Germany. Subjects: Jews - Persecutions - Germany - History - Sources. Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) - Germany - Sources. Globke, Hans, 1898-1973. Germany - Politics and government - 1933-1945 – Sources. Covers worn with slight tears to edge; first pages lightly aged with chipped edges, all pages lightly aged but clean. Good condition. (HOLO2-92-16)

Avigad, Nahman; Yigael Yadin
MEGILAH HITSONIT LE-BERESHIT =A GENESIS APOCRYPHON; A SCROLL FROM THE WILDERNESS OF JUDAEA
Imprint: Jerusalem; Magnes Press Of The Hebrew University And Heikhal Ha-Sefer, 1956
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover
Original Cloth. 4to. 40, 48 pages. 35 cm. First edition. With 8 plates. Aramaic inscriptions translated into Hebrew and English. Added English title page: A Genesis Apocryphon: a scroll from the wilderness of Judea: description and contents of the scroll, facsimiles, transcription and translation of columns II, XIX-XXII; by Nahman Avigad and Yigael Yadin. Translated from Hebrew by Sulamith Schwartz Nardi. A preliminary survey, dealing mainly with the last three columns which are very well preserved. “Avigad and Yadin’s edition includes plates, transcription, and translation (Hebrew and English) of cols. 2 and 19-22. Diacritical marks of either a single or double dash over the letter indicate uncertainty in readings. Their transcription was meticulously executed, and has stood up surprisingly well against subsequent re-readings and advances in photographic technology. The major limitation of this edition, of course, was that it presented only 5 of the known 22 columns. Brief descriptions of the unpublished columns were, nonetheless, provided, and at times these included excerpts of easily readable text. A major contribution of Avigad and Yadin was their observation that the material concerning Lamech constitutes but a small part of the narrative, and that the scroll included stories about a number of the patriarchs of Genesis, stretching from Enoch to Abram. In addition, several intriguing parallels with the books of 1 Enoch and Jubilees were identified. All of this, along with its obvious dependence on the biblical book of Genesis, led Avigad and Yadin to rename the text A Genesis Apocryphon. (Genesis Apocryphon; 2007 dissertation, by Daniel A. Machiela; pg. 54) . Subjects: Genesis Apocryphon. Aramaic. Dead Sea scroll. Selections. Institutional stamps on endpages, light edge wear to jacket, otherwise clean and fresh. Good condition. Hardback
1st edition. Late 18th Century paper covered boards, 8vo, [5] + 65 + 28 leaves. In Hebrew. Vinograd Amsterdam 517; Fuks (HTN) II 399; StCB 4186,3. Mayer Sulzberger’s copy with his small bookplate at rear and perhaps parent's two small stamps (“S.S.”) on title page. Abraham ben Mordecai Azulai (c. 1570–1643) “was a Kabbalistic author and commentator born in Fez, Morocco. In 1599 he moved to Ottoman Palestine and settled in Hebron. In Hebron, Azulai wrote a commentary on the Zohar under the title Kiryat Arba [City of Arba (in Hebrew four); Gen. xxiii.2]. The plague of 1619 drove him from his new home, and while in Gaza, where he found refuge, he wrote his Kabalistic work Chesed le-Abraham (Mercy to Abraham; Book of Micah vii.20). It was published after the author's death by Meshullam Zalman ben Abraham Berak of Gorice, in Amsterdam, 1685. The work is a treatise with an introduction, ? ‘Abn Hashtiah’ (The Cornerstone; see Talmud Yoma 53b), and is divided into seven ‘fountains’ (Book of Zechariah iii.9), each fountain being subdivided into a number of ‘streams.’ A specimen of the work Chesed Le-Avraham, taken from the fifth fountain, twenty-fourth stream, p. 57d, of the Amsterdam edition: On the mystery of Gilgul (reincarnation) and its details: Know that God will not subject the soul of the wicked to more than three migrations; for it is written, ‘Lo, all these things doth God work twice, yea thrice, with a man’ (Job xxxiii. 29). Which means, He makes him appear twice and thrice in a human incarnation; but the fourth time he is incarnated as a clean animal. And when a man offers a sacrifice, God will, by miraculous intervention, make him select an animal that is an incarnation of a human being. Then will the sacrifice be doubly profitable: to the one that offers it and to the soul imprisoned in the brute. For with the smoke of the sacrifice the soul ascends heavenward and attains its original purity. Thus is explained the mystery involved in the words, ‘O Lord, thou preservest man and beast’ (Psalms xxxvi.7 [R. V. 6]). A popular story about Rabbi Azulai is that of how he retrieved the sultan's sword. When the Ottoman sultan visited Hebron, his precious sword fell into the Cave of Machpela. Anyone sent down to retrieve it disappeared. Only Rabbi Azulai was able to descend into the cave and retrieve the sword. He died in Hebron on November 6, 1643 and is buried in the Old Jewish Cemetery in Hebron” (Wikipedia). SUBJECT(S): Cabala -- Early works to 1800. Kabbale -- Ouvrages avant 1800. OCLC: 29582374. OCLC lists10 copies worldwide, only four in the US (Harvard, JTS, NYPL, Columbia). Brandeis also appears to hold a copy.
