Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover

Original boards. 4to. 400, 400, 399, 399 pages. 29 cm. First edition. First edition of the Biblia Sacra Polyglotta, with advertisements on rear board for further volumes soon to be printed in other languages; text block with wide margins pages uncut, boards measure 29 cm. Printed in Hebrew, English, Greek, and Latin. Opposite pages bear duplicate numbering, and each page includes four numbered texts in two columns. Concordance to the following: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy; Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel (Vulgate 1 Kings) , 2 Samuel (Vulgate 2 Kings) , 1 Kings (Vulgate 3 Kings) , 2 Kings (Vulgate 4 Kings) , 1 Chronicles (Vulgate 1 Paralipomenon) , 2 Chronicles (Vulgate 2 Paralipomenon) , Ezra (Vulgate 1 Esdras) , Nehemiah (Vulgate 2 Esdras) , Esther, Job, Psalms. Ending with Psalms [CXIX], remaining fourth volume absent. Three volume set only (missing Hagiography and New Testament; also without prolegomena from Samuel Lee) . The most inclusive of the great Polyglots since the London, or Walton's, Polyglot of 1657, it was printed by Samuel Bagster of Paternoster Row: The first issue [our set] of the ‘Biblia Sacra Polyglotta Bagsteriana’ appeared between 1817 and 1828, four volumes in foolscap octavo and quarto form, containing, besides the prolegomena of Dr. Samuel Lee, the Hebrew Old Testament with points, the Samaritan Pentateuch, the Septuagint Greek version of the Old Testament, the Latin Vulgate, the authorised English version, the Greek Textus Receptus of the New Testament, and the Peshito or ancient Syriac version. However, due to a fire at the printers in March 1822, very few of these sets were actually distributed; In particular, Lowndes states only twenty-three copies of the New Testament portion [the one volume missing in our set] were preserved. A folio edition of the polyglot was published in 1828, repeated in 1831, and subsequently, presenting eight languages at the opening of the volume, and including all the ancient and modern versions above mentioned. Copies of the different texts and translations were brought out separately, and in various combinations. The two volume folio edition (1828; printed many times thereafter) , encompassing the complete old and new testament in eight languages, is more commonly found. The third fascicle in the set has a pasted in advertisement on verso of board, announcing that the polylglott bible will soon be issued in a two part series. Subjects: Polyglot Bible – 1827-1828. Biblia sacra polyglotta Bagsteriana. Not a single set of the first issue listed on OCLC. A single listing exists for a single volume, which survives at a library in Scottland. Original printed Boards worn and rubbed at edges, outer edges of leaves lightly bumped, spine rebacked, otherwise fresh and clean. Very good condition. (SPEC-39-20)

Bahya Ben Joseph Ibn Pakuda, Yehudah Ibn Tibon, Max Emanuel Stern
HOVOT HA-LEVAVOT

Imprint: Vien, 1856
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

(FT) ardcover, 8vo, xxvi, 462 pages. In Hebrew. SUBJECT(S) : Jewish ethics -- Early works to 1800. Lehrbuch der Herzenspflichten; Torat hovot ha-levavot. Bahya (second half of 11th century) , was a “moral philosopher. Little is known about the particulars of Bahya's life beyond the fact that he lived in Muslim Spain, probably at Saragossa. Bahya was also known as a paytan and some of his piyyutim are metered. Twenty piyyutim, either published or in manuscript, signed with the name Bahya are assumed to be his. Bahya's major work, Kitab al-Hidaya ila Fara’id al-Qulub, was written around 1080. It was translated into Hebrew by Judah ibn Tibbon n 1161 under the title hovot ha-Levavot ("Duties of the Hearts") , and in this version it became popular and had a profound influence on all subsequent Jewish pietistic literature. Several abridgments were made of the Hebrew translation, and the work was translated into Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Yiddish. In more recent times it has been translated into English, German (Choboth ha-L'baboth. Lehrbuch der Herzenspflichten, tr. By M. Stern, 1856) , and French. In his Hovot ha-Levavot Bahya drew a great deal upon non-Jewish sources, borrowing from Muslim mysticism, Arabic Neoplatonism, and perhaps also from the Hermetic writings. From Muslim authors he borrowed the basic structure of the book as well as definitions, aphorisms, and examples to illustrate his doctrines. Despite the fact that Bahya borrowed so liberally from non-Jewish sources, Hovot ha-Levavot remains an essentially Jewish book” (Vajda in EJ 2007) . OCLC lists 18 copies worldwide. Front and back cover not attached. Yellowing of pages. Good condition. (Rab-50-6)

With gentle humor, the child prodigy of the faraway past and the accomplished artist of today engage in a spirited dialogue from which emerges a self-portrait of 'The Artist as a Young—and middle-aged and aging—Survivor. Bak, Samuel
SAMUEL BAK: RETURN TO VILNA

Imprint: Boston; Pucker Gallery, 2002
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

Original illustrated wraps. 4to. 44 pages. 28 cm. First edition. Catalog of two exhibitions, Return to Vilna I and Return to Vilna II, held between 31 August and 20 November, 2002 at Pucker Gallery, Boston, Mass. With 67 full color illustrations. Samuel Bak “was born in Vilna. A few years later the area was incorporated into the independent republic of Lithuania. He was eight when the Germans occupied the city. Bak began painting while still a child and, prompted by the well-known Yiddish poet Abraham Sutzkever, held his first exhibition (in the Vilna ghetto) in 1942 at the age of nine. From the ghetto the family was sent to a labor camp on the outskirts of the city. Bak's father managed to save his son by dropping him in a sack out of a ground floor window of the warehouse where he was working; he was met by a maid and brought to the house where his mother was hiding. His father was shot by the Germans in July 1944, a few days before Soviet troops liberated the city. His four grandparents had earlier been executed at the killing site outside Vilna called Ponary. After the war, the young Bak continued painting at the Displaced Persons camp in Landsberg, Germany (1945–48) , where he also studied painting in Munich. In 1948, he and his mother immigrated to Israel, where he studied for a year at the Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem. After fulfilling his military service, he spent three years (1956–59) at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He then moved to Rome (1959–66) , returned to Israel (1966–74) , and lived for a time in New York City (1974–77) . There followed further years in Israel and Paris, then a long stay in Switzerland (1984–93) . From 1993 Bak lived and worked outside Boston, in Weston, Massachusetts. ” (EJ 2007) Subjects: Bak, Samuel - Exhibitions. Holocaust Art - Vilna. OCLC lists 21 copies.
