CONTARDO BARBIERI: UN LIBERO NOVECENTO

Imprint: Milano: Charta,, 1995
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

1st Edition. Original Illustrated Wrappers. 8vo. 125 pages ; 24 cm. In Italian. A catalog of an exhibition held at the Castello Visconteo, Pavia, May 20-June 18, 1995. Includes bibliographical references (pages 117-125) “Contardo Barbieri (1900 – 1966) was an Italian painter. He graduated from the Brera Academy in 1921 and in his youthful works he re-elaborated the late 19th-century Lombard figurative tradition, attracted by the researches into light and colour carried out by Emilio Gola, Daniele Ranzoni and Emilio Longoni. Without abandoning his realist style of painting, during the 1920s, he developed a more solid and synthetic rendering of form, influenced by the contemporary researches of the Novecento Italiano group, which he joined after the first Milan exhibition in 1926. After his debut in the Esposizione Nazionale d’Arte, held at the Palazzo della Permanente in Milan in 1927, he began to exhibit regularly from 1928 onwards in the Venice Biennale and all the principal, official exhibitions in Italy and abroad. He gained extensive recognition through his vast repertoire of portraits, female figures and still lifes as well as his notable production of landscapes, in which he combines the severe language of the 20th century with studies from life. After being appointed director of the Carrara Academy in Bergamo in 1931, he played a pivotal role in the cultural renewal of the city and he executed a mural for the Casa Littoria ‘A. Locatelli’ in 1938, which was later destroyed. ” (Wikipedia, 2017) SUBJECT(S) : Barbieri, Contardo. Exhibition catalogs. OCLC lists 21 copies worldwide. Inscribed on the front end page. Barker, Ernest, Sir
A NAZI SCHOOL HISTORY TEXT BOOK, 1914-1933.

Imprint: Westminster, UK: Friends Of Europe, 1934
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

1st edition. Original paper wrappers, 8vo, 19 pages. Interesting period analysis, in under 20 pages, of the “new German Mythology” which is being taught to Germany’s children. The author includes no fewer than 8 references to Antisemitic references to the Jews or Jewish conspiracy against Germany, as well as the other standard Nazi tropes. "Germany is now making a legend - the legend of the Third Empire. She is giving it saints and heroes and martyrs. Unlike other legends, this legend is new and burning and contemporary. It fans national pride (suffering from a sense of defeat) with ardent fires, and ... It tends to encourage dislike of other nations. The new Germany, based on racial nationalism, is building a story of the great Renaissance of national life since the collapse of 1918; and it is building it on the foundations of exaltation of German blood and depreciation of what is non-German. Being thorough, as well as passionate, the Germans are making the story they have built not only a matter of song and poem, but also a matter of text-books and educational method. The result is school history-books like that which is analysed in the following pages" (from the Foreword) . Friends of Europe publications, no. 11. SUBJECT(S) : History -- Study and teaching (Elementary) -- Germany. National socialism -- Study and teaching. Questions and answers. -- Juvenile literature. Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiter-Partei. Spine repaired, quality glossy paper has held up well and is solid. Good Condition thus. (Holo2-139-18) xx

Barlow, Thomas
THE ORIGINAL OF KINGLY AND ECCLESIASTICAL GOVERNMENT

Imprint: London: Printed for Robert Clavell and William Hensman, 1681
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover

1st edition. Full period leather binding. 32mo (2”x4”), 111 pages. Includes 4-page preliminary “To the Reader.” Thomas Barlow “was an English academic and clergyman, who became Provost of The Queen's College, Oxford, and Bishop of Lincoln. He was seen in his own times and by Edmund Venables in the Dictionary of National Biography to have been a trimmer (conforming politically for the sake of advancement), a reputation mixed in with his academic and other writings on casuistry. His views were Calvinist and strongly anti-Catholic, and he was among the last English bishops to dub the Pope Antichrist. He worked in the 1660s for ‘comprehension’ of nonconformists, but supported the crackdown of the mid-1680s, and declared loyalty to James II of England on his accession, having strongly supported the Exclusion Bill, which would have denied it to him.” Rear boards is composed of 9 partial leaves of an earlier Latin imprint with red initial letters and neat black type, a knowledgable colleague has suggested that it is legal commentary text (not Law) dealing with with contracts, and responsibility, probably a Rhenish imprint from the 1480’s. Incunable pages originally pressed together to form rear board, now seperating to individual sheets. Subjects: Divine right of kings -- Early works to 1800. Episcopacy. Politics and government. Early works. 1660-1688 Great Britain. OCLC: 15226351. OCLC lists 4 copies worldwide (UCLA, Yale, Trinity Dublin, Bayer. Staatsbib). Lacks blank front endpapers. Leather binding is worn with some spotting, lacks the front stiffener (board) and is separated from stiffener/board at rear as described above. Some edgewear to margins of title, just touching one letter, text pages remain nice. Good Condition Thus. Scarce. (AC-22-6)

Edition: First Edition

8vo. 56 pages. First edition. Reprinted from American Jewish year book, vol. 63, 1962. SUBJECT (S) : Jews – Europe – history. Baron (1895-1989) was a professor at Columbia University, and was appointed the Nathan L. Miller Professor of Jewish History, Literature, and Institutions there in 1929, making Columbia “the first university to provide a true academic milieu for Jewish studies. During his incumbency, Baron denounced the "lachrymose conception of Jewish history" as a story of individuals and persecutions, flawed by undue emphasis on events, texts and idealism. He used universal categories and scholarly research to place Jewish history in a larger comparative context, while placing equal emphasis on the vibrancy of Jewish religious culture. ”(columbia.edu) Promotional flyer laid in.
