INDO-JUDAIC STUDIES : SOME PAPERS.

Binding: Hardback

New Delhi, Northern Book Centre, 2002 . Cloth, 23 cm, vi, 126 pages. Contents include: Introduction. 1. Gandhi and the Zionists (including C. F. Andrews and the Jews) . 2. The Jews of India. 3. Art. 4. From the archives. Indo-Judaic Studies has been gathering momentum ever since India and Israel established full diplomatic relations some ten years ago. This book is an important historical contribution to the subject as it contains hitherto unpublished material gleaned mainly from public and private archives in India and Israel. The author presents Mahatma Gandhi and C. F. Andrews in a new light. He traces the "lost" periods of the Bene Israel sojourn in India: their early settlement; the medieval and Moghul periods; and their heyday under the Marathas. The section on art deals with a fabulous collection that contains Indian miniatures and manuscripts taken by Nadir Shah when he took the Koh-i-noor and the Peacock throne. The diary kept by the Zionist emissary to India in 1936, Dr. Olsvanger, is published in full in English translation together with his correspondence with Pandit Nehru. The reader is introduced to the papers of Hermann Kallenbach, Gandhi's soul friend, and gets a peep into Indian and Israeli archives with one document going back to 1826." ISBN: 8172111312 . Very good condition in very good jacket. (SEF-27-12)

SEFER HA-MIKHTAM `AL MASEKHET PESAHIM, SUKAH U-MO`ED KATAN : U-TESHUVOT BA`AL HA-MIKHTAM U-VENE DORO.

Imprint: New York : Blau., 1958.
Binding: Hardcover

(FT) 8vo. 29, 263 pages. In Hebrew. English title: Sefer Hamichtam on the tractates P'sachim, Suckah and Moed katan and responsa. SUBJECT(S) : Responsa – 1040-1600; Talmud. Mo'ed – commentaries. “[Ben Levi was a 13th century] scholar in Provence. Little is known about his life and personality other than that his principal teacher was Samuel b. Solomon Sekili, also a noted Provençal scholar. His few published responsa show his importance as an authority. His decisions influenced French scholars to alter their verdicts in accordance with his opinions. R. David is known through his Ha-Mikhtam, which exerted a strong influence on the development of subsequent halakhic literature. In his work, a commentary covering many tractates of the Talmud, he bases himself on Alfasi. Many of his decisions which were included in the commentary were later incorporated in the Orhot Hayyim of Aaron b. Jacob ha-Kohen of Lunel, who often quoted David, sometimes anonymously. It was through the Orhot Hayyim and the Kol Bo, which is dependent on it, that David's work became known to Joseph Caro and Moses Isserles, who made considerable use of these two books. The Sefer ha-Mikhtam quotes extensively from scholars of France, Provence, and Spain but relies primarily upon Rashi, Alfasi, Maimonides, Abraham b. David, Zerahiah ha-Levi, and Meshullam b. Moses. ” (EJ, 2007) Ex library, otherwise good+ condition. (RAB-30-9)

Benbassa, E
SEPHARDI JEWRY A History of the Judeo-Spanish Community, 14th-20th Centuries

Imprint: University of California Press, 2000
Binding: Paperback

Jewish Communities in the Modern World; 377 pages; Until the publication of this remarkably comprehensive history of the Sephardi diaspora, only limited attention had been given to the distinctive Judeo-Spanish cultural entity that flourished in the Balkans and Asia Minor for more than four centuries. Yet the great majority of Sephardi Jews, after their expulsion from Spain in 1492 and subsequently from Portugal, found their way to this region, drawn by the political stability and relatively tolerant rule of the Ottoman Empire, as well as by promising socioeconomic conditions. Esther Benbassa and Aron Rodrigue show how Sephardi society and culture developed in the Levant, sharing language, religion, customs, and communal life as they did nowhere else, both during prosperous times and during the declining fortunes of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The impact of westernization, the end of Ottoman power, and the rise of fragmenting nation-states transformed this vital community in the modern era. And, like many other Jewish communities, the unique Judeo-Spanish culture was dispersed and destroyed by the Holocaust and the migrations of the twentieth century. Sephardi Jewry presents its vivid history in a readable, well-documented narrative. "The most complete and thorough historical synthesis ever written in a European language on the Jewish communities of the Balkans and Turkey."--Michel Abitbol, L'arche"A rich and too-little-known history that successfully avoids twin snares: the myth of the irreparable decadence of oriental Judaism and the myth of the lost golden age of Spain."--Alain Dieckhoff, Les Nouveaux Cahiers"The authors illuminate the variety of responses--between the poles of westernizing and holding onto tradition--offered by these Jewish societies of the Levantine Sephardi cultural area to the processes of modernization, as well as their startling receptivity to the new ideologies of zionism and socialism that marked the end of the nineteenth century." --Annales . 1st edition. Period boards. 8vo. 92 pages, 22 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates to "War for Peace: A Debate Between Two Jewish and Christian Lovers on the Matter of Religion. " A turn of the Century defense against Christian missionaries. In a contemporary review entitled "Neo-Hebraic Literature in America" (New York, 1900) , Bernard Drachman noted that Milhamah Be-Shalom "is a defense of Judaism against the attacks of Christian missionaries, particularly against the culumnies of McCall in his notorious Netibot Olam, and a sharp criticism on the New Testament. The work is in the form of a debate between Peter, a Christian priest, who represents Christianity, and Abraham, a Jewish Rabbi and preacher, who defends the cause of Judaism. Its usefulness as furnishing Hebrew reading Jews with arguments by which to refute the persistent proselytizing efforts of Christian missionaries is very great. It is written in a pure, clear and simple style which renders its perusal easy for any one [sic] acquainted with Hebrew. " Singerman 5131. With additional original full-size drawing in 3 colors, with colored pencil, of doves and flowers, with inscription in Hebrew and signed. Housed in original folding-case, loose as issued, original colored pictorial stiff wrappers. Title translates as: “62 Psalms and Verses of the Bible. ” In French. Preface by Jules Romains. “The artist Benn was a renowned Jewish painter who drew inspiration from the Bible and expressed his spiritual connection to it in a body of self-contained and highly integrated work, which was published under the title “62 Psaumes et versets de la Bible. ” When the Nazis entered Paris, Benn’s worst premonitions were realized. He was rounded up together with other East European Jews and interned in a holding camp, whose inmates were ultimately destined for a concentration camp in Germany. He was held in that camp for a month, and during that time he sketched the faces of his co-internees and their surroundings. He fell into a deep depression, lost weight, and would probably have died had it not been for the efforts of his wife and friends who managed to smuggle him out of the camp. Arrangements were made to hide the couple in the basement of an apartment house in Paris. Benn and his wife remained there in hiding for the duration of the war. During his twenty six months of confinement, Benn completed a series of sixty two drawings, based on selected psalms and verses of the Bible. The remarkable feature of this body of work is that it represents a radical departure in style from of his other work, and that style, while continuing to evolve after the war, remained exclusively associated with biblical themes. He continued to use biblical themes as subject matter (e. G. , Song of Songs) , and this particular style sets these works quite apart from the other figurative and representational work he did simultaneously. The drawings and the canvasses were critically acclaimed, and the artist was urged to make the works more accessible. In order to accommodate the demand for his biblically inspired work Benn agreed to have the sixty two drawings and paintings reproduced in the form of an album, which was published in 1960 under the title, “62 Psaumes et Versets de la Bible. ” The publication was issued in a limited edition of 2, 000 copies. The album was prefaced by the French writer Jules Roman, of the Academie Française. ” (Art of Benn) Subjects: Bible. O.T. - Illustrations. Bible. O.T. Psalms - Illustrations. Bible. Benn; Lo Duca
BEN [BENN]

Imprint: Paris; Farlag Grohar, 1948
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

First edition. Original stiff wrappers. 8vo. 67, [3] pages. 23 cm. A collection of 52 paintings and illustrations by the artist Benn; illustrated reproductions of his still lifes and portraitures printed in color and black and white; with an essay on the artist written by the film critic Joseph Marie Lo Duca (one of the cofounders of the French Nouvelle Vague journal Cahiers du Cinema) , printed with historiated initials. Benn “(Benzion Rabinovich; 1905–1989) , painter and graphic artist. Benn was born in Bialystok, Poland, and finished the Hebrew gymnasium there, where he later started his education in art at the private studios of local artists. He also studied at the Academy of Arts in Warsaw. He made his debut in 1927 with his first solo exhibition, shown first in Bialystok and then in Warsaw. During this period, he designed the typography for collections of Yiddish poetry. In Bialystok, his native town, he became a leading figure in local cultural life. He was among the founders of the modernist group ‘3F’ (‘Forma-Farba-Faktura’) , where most of the members were Jewish artists. In 1928, he organized the first Autumn Salon for Bialystok and Vilna artists. In 1926–29, he designed the scenery for the performances of several Yiddish theater companies in Bialystok. In 1929, the Bialystok municipality awarded him a scholarship for a trip to Paris. On the eve of his departure, Benn arranged a ‘farewell’ solo exhibition that was later shown in Warsaw with the assistance of the Jewish Society for Encouragement of Artists. In Paris, he studied with Fernand Leger. From 1932, Benn regularly exhibited in Paris art salons. His works were highly praised by critics and won public recognition. Six one-man shows in the 1930s at private art galleries in Paris are yet another indication of his success. During this period, he was also active in book design. During the German occupation of France, Benn went into hiding. However, not long before the end of the occupation, he was finally seized by the Gestapo and deported to the Drancy concentration camp. By sheer luck, he not only survived but also escaped further deportation to Auschwitz. In 1945, Benn returned to Paris. In the post-war years, having rejected the cubist and expressionistic techniques that had so strongly attracted him in the 1920s and 1930s, Benn crystallized his individual manner based on an organic combination of ‘metaphysical painting’ techniques and surrealism. From the 1950s through the 1970s, while mainly active in painting, he also engaged in book design and, among other works in this field, executed a series of illustrations for The Song of Songs (1950, 1974) and other books of the Bible (1948, 1954, 1971) , as well as for an edition of ‘Chad Gadya’ (1956) .
