Bien, Julius, introduction [as president of the organization]
REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE CONSTITUTION GRAND LODGE I.O.B.B. 1882-1883

Imprint: New York: No Publisher Listed, 1883
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

1st edition. Original paper wrappers. 8vo, 151 pages. Tables in back. Singerman S028, listing only 3 holdings of this volume in 2019 (B’nai B’rith Archives, NYPL, HUC), none at any Ivy League Institution nor at the AJHS.. The exchanges and reports are surprisingly critical of decisions made by others in the lodge, perhaps emphasizing the internal nature of this report and therefore the lack of surviving copies. Includes reports on all aspects of life in and decisions by the organization and its many chapters from across the country. A few examples would include the IOBB's Maimonides Library; documents detailing charges against people in the Lodge; members charging other members with "riotous and unbecoming conduct in the lodge-room, and in using profane, scurrilous and insulting language, both in writing and in speech, toward the Lodge and members thereof;" appeals of decisions to seize the books belonging to various branches; financial and statistical information etc. This was definitely not a publication meant for public consumption. B'nai B'rith is the oldest Jewish service organization in the world. Its mission is the security and continuity of the Jewish people and the State of Israel and combating antisemitism and bigotry. The organization has historic roots stem to the system of fraternal lodges, like the Freemasons (Wikipedia, 2018) . Structurally, the B'nai B'rith is organized on three levels: international, regional, and local. The international operation has since 1935 been known as the "Supreme Lodge." Prior to that time, it was the "Constitutional Grand Lodge. " Julius Bien (1826-1909) “was an American lithographer originally from Germany, as well as president of B’nai B’rith for more than three decades. He also produced a lithographed edition of John James Audubon's The Birds of America.” In Germany, Bien had “fought on the side of the liberals in the 1848 Revolution, and fled to New York in 1848 or 1849….[where he] began a lithography studio…. Bien's studio produced work in different qualities, indicating he was willing to take on any job—city views and maps, mechanical and architectural drawings and advertisements—but on the whole his work was ‘distinguished by its technical superiority and flexible manipulation of print media’. He worked for the federal government as well after the American Civil War, and was noted as a skilled printer of maps with ‘a new level of scientific accuracy’ (a 1902 map of Connecticut was praised as ‘all that could be desired’), winning many awards, and becoming a ‘prominent citizen of New York’ as well as the first president of the National Lithographers Association. From 1854 to 1857, and again from 1868 to 1900, he was president of B'nai B'rith, contributing substantially to its internationalization. In the late 1850s, Bien was sought out by John James Audubon's youngest son, John Woodhouse Audubon, to produce a new full-size edition of The Birds of America, an edition to be sold via subscription….the Bien edition remains an important publication: his illustrations ‘represent the highest standard chromolithography had achieved, and even now they stand as a landmark to the medium. Bien pushed against the limits of available technology with intuitive artistry in an effort to provide information and aesthetic pleasure to the mass audience of a democratic society’” (Wikipedia). SUBJECTS: Jews -- Periodicals. Jews -- United States -- Periodicals. Wear to spine, lacking bottom 1/4 of title page (which is an exact reproduction of the cover, which is fully intact) with loss only of publication info: "New York 1883." Good Condition Overall. Exceedingly rare and important. (AMR-57-5-D)

In 1936 he settled in Tel Aviv where he served as director of Bet Mikhah Yosef (a municipal library based on his father's collection) . His writings in Hebrew and German include essays, literary criticism, and studies of folklore. He edited and published his father's writings. ” - 2008 EJ. Micha Josef Berdyczewski (Later: Bin-Gorion) (1865–1921) , “Hebrew writer and thinker. Born in Medzibezh, Podolia, Berdyczewski was the descendant of a line of ? Asidic rabbis. … Berdyczewski wrote more than 150 Hebrew stories, many in Yiddish, and several in German. These stories deal with two central subjects: life in the Jewish towns of Eastern Europe in the last decades of the 19th century and the life of the Eastern European Jewish students in the cities of Central and Western Europe. … One of the most seminal figures in both modern Hebrew literature and Jewish thought, Berdyczewski exerted a subtle yet crucial influence upon many readers after the turn of the century because he embodied, both in his personality and in his writing, the painfully ambivalent attitudes toward both traditional Judaism and European culture shared by many Jewish intellectuals. Characteristically, Berdyczewski rebelled against his religious background, but could never completely reject it. ” - EJ 2008. Subjects: Berdichevsky, Micah Joseph, 1865-1921 - Bibliography. Suddenly one of them whispers in his ear, “Oberleutenant Birnbuam send regards. ” The rebbe looks up and motions for the circle to split for a tall, lanky man he saw more than thirty years earlier. To the man’s “Shalom Aleichem, ” the rebbe replies, “Yasher Koach. Yasher Koach for what you did for us in Landsberg. ” The storekeeper in Meah Shearim asks, “Aren’t you Oberleutenant Birnbaum? ” Before his startled customer can even reply, he is engulfed in a warm embrace, as the storekeeper shouts to his amazed wife and son, “This man was our liberator! ” Some people seem born to lead more interesting lives than others. Meyer Birnbaum is one of them. Relive with him the crunching poverty of Brooklyn during the Depression. Experience his spiritual awakening in Young Israel, America’s first baal teshuvah movement. Meet R’ Elchonon Wassserman, R’ Yitzchak Hutner, and Mike Tress through the eyes of an American teenager. Encounter the anti-Semitism of the American Army: Christian missionaries in sheep’s clothing, court-martial for wearing a yarmulke, fellow officers’ complaints about fighting “the Jews’ War”. Be there at the liberation of Buchenwald and Ohrduff. Hear the Klausenberger Rebbe rekindle the flame of emunah and bitachon in his overwhelming Kol Nidre drashah the first Yom Kippur after the liberation. Vor Dem Wandersturm

Imprint: Frankfurt Am Main; L. Sänger, 1919
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

Paper wrappers. 8vo. 31 pages. 23 cm. First edition. In German. Title translates as: “Before the Wandering Tempest. ” Printed in the pamphlet series “Jüdische Zeitfragen No. 1” (Jewish Contemporary Issues, no. 1) in the year 1919/5679. Nathan Birnbaum (1864–1937) , a writer (early pen name: Mathias Acher) , philosopher, one of the originators of Zionist ideology, later a leader of religious Judaism. He was an early proponent of Zionism, founding “Kadimah, ” the first Jewish nationalist students' organization (1882) with the aim of criticizing assimilation and setting up a Jewish nationalist consciousness. “After the Second Zionist Congress (1898) Birnbaum made a fundamental turn in his political thinking: He became a spokesman for "diaspora nationalism, " publishing articles in which he severely criticized Herzl's "diplomatism, " the "inorganic" nature of the Zionist movement, and the Zionist "negation of the Diaspora, " its culture and language (Yiddish) . He gradually withdrew from Zionism, affirming that "Israel comes before Zion, " i. E. , that the striving for Ere? Israel must not entail neglect of the Jewish People itself. His concept was now that of an interterritorial nation, comprising and integrating all existing Jewish groups which had a cultural life of their own. The most important group in his eyes was the Yiddish-speaking one in Eastern Europe. … He repudiated his own former "pagan-Jewish" life in Gottes Volk (1917) , with further editions in 1918 and 1921 (translated into English under the title Confession, 1946) . In Vom Freigeist zum Glaeubigen (1919) he described his spiritual development. Upon the refounding of the Agudat Israel World Organization (1919) he became its first general secretary. At that time, after the war, revolution, and pogroms in Eastern Europe, he devoted much effort to the problem of emigration and endeavored to enlist general Jewish cooperation toward regulating on a big scale what amounted to an unorganized, panic mass flight. His book Im Dienste der Verheissung (1927) contains a critical analysis of the "activism" of the Orthodox as a grafting of fashionable ideologies onto an organism that was inherently of a different nature and suggested to the "activists" a more fruitful field – the gigantic task of creating the necessary material preconditions toward effecting a metamorphosis. ” (2007 Encyclopedia Judaica) Subjects: Jews -- Restoration. Judentum. Migration. OCLC lists 20 copies worldwide. Lightly soiled front cover, soiled back cover. Pages aged, browned, but clean. Good+ condition. (GER-36-43)

The Bourbon historian and scholar Pierre Bizot (1630-1696) was one of the first authors to take an interest in modern numismatics.
