Blinder, Yaakov; Asher Bergman; Shalom Meir Wallach
The Haggadah of the Roshei Yeshivah: Illuminating Thoughts from the Century's Great Torah Leaders [Book 1 and Book 2]

Imprint: Brooklyn; Mesorah Publications, 1998/ 1999
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

(FT) Hardbound. 8vo. 303; 309 pages. 24 cm. Two volumes; first edition [Volume 1: "The Grossman edition"; volume 2: "The Ray edition"; not included is volume 3: "The Weinstock edition. " Each stands on its own]. Text in Hebrew and English on opposite pages, commentary in English. Haggadah of the roshei yeshivah, adapted by Yaakov Blinder, from the Hebrew by Asher Bergman, in association with Shalom Meir wallach. Description from the publisher: “Their very names inspire awe: Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer of Slutzk and Jerusalem; Rabbi Aharon Kotler of Kletzk and Lakewood; Rabbi Chaim Shmulevitz of Mir and Jerusalem; Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky, the Steipler Gaon of Bnai Brak; Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky of Torah Vodaath; and Rabbi Moshe Feinstein of Mesivtha Tifereth Jerusalem! Another year, another Haggadah. One often wonders what is left to say -- but no one will ask that question about this monumental anthology. For the first time in English, this volume brings together the ideas and expositions of six of the greatest luminaries of contemporary times, six revered and renowned roshei yeshivah, who, collectively, were the teachers and leaders of tens, even hundreds of thousands of Jews, all over the world. First in ‘Arzei HaLevanon, ’ the Hebrew predecessor of this volume, and now here, their discourses on the Haggadah are collected and set forth with taste and clarity. All of them were Torah geniuses, who saw lessons for today in the miracles of yesterday. To them, the Haggadah and the story of the Exodus were guideposts for life in every era. Their interpretations of the Haggadah are distinguished for depth, incisiveness, pure faith -- and the profound depth that marked their authors as the Torah leaders of three generations. ” With dustjacket. Subjects: Haggadot - Commentaries. Seder - Customs and practices. Seder - Liturgy - Texts. Judaism - Liturgy - Texts. Some accumulated dirt on lower edge from shelf wear, otherwise brand new. Near fine condition. (HAG-7-14)

Rohling was forced to sue Bloch for libel, but after two years' investigations withdrew his action 13 days before the trial was due to open...Bloch was elected in 1884, 1885, and 1891 to the Austrian Parliament from a preponderantly Jewish constituency of Galicia, and was the first parliamentarian to make Jewish affairs his main political concern, regarding himself as an interpreter and defender of Jewish thought to the non-Jewish public...Bloch saw the struggle for Jewish rights as part of the fight for the principle of equality for all nationalities in the empire, which the monarchy would have to recognize in order to exist...For his work in the Jewish cause Bloch was warmly received on visits to the United States in 1912, and again in 1920. During World War I he raised funds on behalf of the Austrian government in neutral countries. He published a compendium of apologetics, Israel und die Voelker (1922; Israeland the Nations, 1927) , based on the evidence of the experts in connection with the Rohling trial, and his memoirs Erinnerungen aus meinem Leben (1922; My Reminiscences, 1927) . He also wrote prolifically on Jewish lore. " (Lamed, EJ, 2007) OCLC lists just 4 copies worldwide. Pages dark but clean and intact. Good + condition. (RAB-45-9)

Blondheim, D. S.
LES PARLERS JUDEO-ROMANS ET LA VETUS LATINA; ETUDE SUR LES RAPPORTS ENTRE LES TRADUCTIONS BIBLIQUES EN LANGUE ROMANE DES JUIFS AU MOYEN AGE ET LES ANCIENNES VERSIONS

Imprint: Paris, E. Champion, 1925
Binding: Hardcover

Original Publisher's Cloth. Large 8vo. cxxxviii, 247 pages, 26 cm. In French. SUBJECT (S): Romance languages -- Foreign words and phrases. Latin language -- Foreign words and phrases. Jews -- History. Hebrew language -- Influence on Latin. Hebrew language -- Semantics. Linguistica Bible. Latin -- Versions -- Old Latin. At head of title: D. S. Blondheim. Reprinted in part from various periodicals. Bibliographical foot-notes. Blondheim (1884-1934) was a “U. S. Romance scholar. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Blondheim studied at Johns Hopkins University where he became professor of Romance philology in 1924. During his studies at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris he began to work on the notes left by A. Darmesteter on the Old French glosses, over 1, 000 in number, in Rashi’s talmudic commentaries. Blondheim, after collating these with early manuscripts, restored their original form, established their exact meaning and published them as the first volume of his Les glosses francaises dans les commentaires talmudiques de Raschi. He then proceeded to study each term in all its ramifications, but on his untimely death left only 125 completed studies. They were published posthumously as the second volume of his Glosses, with his biography and a very extensive bibliography. The vast amount of historical and philological documentation gathered by Blondheim offers an invaluable source of information. Blondheim’s minor writings included many other contributions to the medieval Judeo-Romance dialects, e. G. , medieval Judeo-French hymns. His indefatigable scientific endeavors did not hinder him from taking an active part in Jewish affairs, both philanthropic and Zionist. Blondheim prepared the first English translation of L. Pinsker’s Auto-Emancipation. His life ended on a tragic note. His manuscripts and papers are now in the National and University Library, Jerusalem” (Banitt in EJ, 2007) . Previous owner's name on FEP. Slight coloring to edges of pages. Light wear to cover corners. Small chip to stop of title page, but no loss of text. Very good condition. (Sef-13-11)

CELEBRATE OUR PRESIDENT’S DIAMOND JUBILEE BIRTHDAY [FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT]

Imprint: Washington, DC, 1942
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

1st Edition. Original Illustrated Wrappers. 8vo. 3 pages ; 23 cm. Holocaust-era Invitation Program for President Roosevelt’s 60th Birthday, held by The Religious Freedom Foundation asking Synagogues to arrange a service “Commemorating… our great President and the ninth consecutive year of the fight he has led against Infantile Paralysis in our nation. ” Includes a list of the ceremonies arrangement committee which is made up of about 100 notable Jewish leaders. Published 13 years before Salk’s vaccine. “On January 3, 1938, Roosevelt founded the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, now known as the March of Dimes… The organization initially focused on the rehabilitation of victims of paralytic polio, and supported the work of Jonas Salk and others that led to the development of polio vaccines. ” (Wikipedia, 2017) This memorial program was Chaired by Congressman Sol Bloom, the influential Jewish Congressman from New York. “In the run-up to World War II, he took charge of high-priority foreign-policy legislation for the Roosevelt Administration, including authorization for Lend Lease in 1941.” (Wikipedia, 2017) . Though FDR was open about his Polio, he also tried to downplay it; this is an unusually public connection of FDR and Polio: “FDR requested that the press avoid photographing him walking, maneuvering, or being transferred from his car. The stipulation was accepted by most reporters and photographers but periodically someone would not comply. The Secret Service was assigned to purposely interfere with anyone who tried to snap a photo of FDR in a ‘disabled or weak’ state” (FDR Presidential Library, 2017) . OCLC lists no copies anywhere. Creased and worn, with a few small tears and some discoloration. Good condition. Very Rare and significant publication linking FDR, Polio, American Political Leadership, and American Jewish Life.
