DYING IN THE LAW OF MOSES: CRYPTO-JEWISH MARTYRDOM IN THE IBERIAN WORLD

Imprint: Bloomington; Indiana University Press, 2007
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover

Original Cloth. 8vo. XVII, 278 pages. 24 cm. First edition. "Miriam Bodian's study of crypto-Jewish martyrdom in Iberian lands during the Spanish and Portuguese inquisitions depicts a new type of martyr that emerged in the late sixteenth century - a defiant, educated judaizing martyr who engaged in disputes with inquisitors. By examining closely the Inquisition dossiers of four men who were tried in the Iberian Peninsula or Spanish America and who developed judaizing theologies that drew from currents of Reformation thinking that emphasized the authority of Scripture and the religious autonomy of individual interpreters of Scripture, Miriam Bodian reveals unexpected connections between Reformation thought and historic crypto-Judaism. The teachers of Israel felt that their people had raised religion to a new power and significance, and that in the Torah they possessed a body of truth which would prove invaluable for the worldā€™s moral and religious progress. Ā€œBen-Zion Bokser (July 4, 1907 ā€“ 1984) was one of the major Conservative rabbis of the United Statesā€¦. 1st Edition. 10 X 13 inch Copper Etching with Colored Outline. In French. Title translates into English as, “Map of the Holy Land of the Twelve Tribes Of Israel. ” “Rigobert Bonne (1727–1794) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century… In 1773 Bonne succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depōt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne’s work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand coloring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses… While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal. ” (Wikipedia, 2017) This map depicts the important settlements, as well as the regions of the twelve tribes. The Mediterranean coast reaches from Gaza in the south to Sidon in the north. Map spills over

GEDENCKCLANCK 1940-1945. SUPPLEMENT NR. 4 (SPRING 1945)

Imprint: Alphen Aan Den Rijn (Netherlands) ; Drukkerij Rijnland, [1945]
Binding: Paperback

Paper wrappers. 12mo. 16 pages. 20 cm. Fourth Supplement. In Dutch. Gedenckclanck was originally the name of a volume published in the Netherlands in 1626 which contains the well known hymnal, “we go out together now”, a celebration of Dutch independence and liberation. In the occupied Netherlands consecutive four part anthologies of illegal poetry, letters, and writings, all in the service of the resistance, were printed at the same underground press in Alphen aan den Rijn, and each collection was given the same title Gedenckclanck. “Gedenckclanck 1940-1944” was printed in three parts, in the years 1944, 1944, and 1945, of lengths of 112, 176, and 68 pages respectively, in editions of 2200, 400, 200 respectively. The first volume was printed hastily, without corrections being made to the print run. The latter two volumes were reserved for the Royal House (presumably the Dutch Royal Family was allowed to obtain any type of literature even during the occupation) , prisoners in the camps, prisoners overseas, and those fighting in Free Dutch units elsewhere. Part four, entitled “Gedenckclanck 1940-1945” was printed in the early spring of 1945. Four supplements, prepared during the occupation and which appeared one month after the liberation, were produced in very limited print runs. The pamphlet we have to offer is the last of the four in the series. Approximate translation from the title page recto: “This little book was commenced after a presentation entitled "The Message of the Dead". / We go out together now! Radiant, young, happy. But above all grateful. / Closing with the farewell letter from a condemned man. / To the memory of Jaap Sickenga, shot by the Germans on May 11, 1942.” This supplement to pt. 4 of the clandestinely published series of the same title contains letters and poems by or about Dutch victims of Nazi terror. “Gedenckclanck first appeared in the autumn of 1944. They included only illegal poems, referring to the sacrifice of the dead and suffering in prisons and camps. The second Gedenckclanck offered an anthology of illegal poetry, from bundles and loose sheets of papers that had made the rounds. In the third Gedenckclanck illegal prose poetry was also included. Volume four appeared in the early spring of 1945. In the first months after liberation there appeared four 'supplements' also titled: Gedenckclanck. The compiler lectured in various places on 'The Message of the Dead ", after which a few small anthologies of illegal literature were offered. The mimeographed supplements, respectively: 26, 18, 31 and 16 page count. The first was dedicated to the sacrifice of the dead and suffering in prisons and camps. Nos. 2 and 4 contain only testimonies of martyrs. The third supplement is subtitled: Prayers. ” (This information, and the preceding specifications, with gratitude taken from Dirk de Jong (red. ) , HET VRIJE BOEK IN ONVRIJE TIJD. BIBLIOGRAFIE VAN ILLEGALE EN CLANDESTIENE BELLETTRIE. Interbook International, Schiedam 1978 (THE FREE BOOK OF UNFREE TIME. BIBLIOGRAPHY OF ILLEGAL AND CLANDESTINE BELLES LETTRES. Imprint: New York; Aroysgegeben Fun Lit?erarishen Ferlag, 1916
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover

(FT) Publishers cloth. 4to. 124 pages. 26 cm. First edition. In Yiddish. “A Link in the Chain. ” Bound in cloth, printed on fine paper, with 8 full page block print illustrations by Yitshok? Likhtenshteyn. The author, Menahem Boraisha “(Menahem Goldberg; sometimes simply Menahem; 1888–1949) , Yiddish poet and essayist. Born in Brest-Litovsk, the son of a Hebrew teacher, he combined a thorough Jewish education with attendance at the Russian school in his birthplace. At the age of 16 he joined the Socialist Zionists and began to write poetry in Russian and Yiddish. In Warsaw from 1905, he received encouragement from I. L. Peretz, publishing his first poems in Yiddish journals, and drama reviews for the daily Haynt. While serving in the Russian Army (1909–11) , he published his impressions of barrack-life in both Haynt and Fraynd. His poem ‘Poyln’ (Poland, ’ 1914) expressed the tense relationship between Jews and Poles. He settled in the U. S. In 1914, and in 1918 joined the editorial board of the Yiddish daily, Der Tog. His book of poems A Ring in der Keyt (‘A Link in the Chain, ’ 1916) was followed by Zamd (‘Sand, ’ 1920) , a collection which included a memorable poem on Theodor Herzl . After a trip to the U. S. S. R. In 1926, he contributed to the Communist daily Frayhayt but parted company with it in 1929, when it justified Arab attacks on Jews. He then worked with the papers Vokh and Yidish and became press officer of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee . His poem Zavl Rimer (‘Zavl the Harness-Maker, ’ 1923) , a novel in verse, in which Yiddish speech rhythms are combined with poetic meter, several parts of which are in the tradition of Yiddish folksong, exposed the horror of the postwar Russian pogroms. Der Geyer (‘The Wayfarer, ’ 2 vols. , 1943) is a spiritual autobiography on which he worked for ten years. It describes the progress of its main character, Noah Marcon, from skepticism to faith and from the profane to the holy. The work is a poetical attempt to summarize the intellectual legacy of Judaism and Jewish history in recent generations, while generally dramatizing human thought and the struggles of conscience within vividly portrayed social and natural settings. It extends into non-human spheres, including an empathetic portrait of a dog, often attains a cosmic consciousness, and is written in a great variety of verse forms, employed with technical inventiveness. His last poems, Durkh Doyres (‘Through Generations’) , appeared posthumously in 1950.” (EJ 2007) Subjects: Yiddish poetry. OCLC lists 6 copies worldwide.
