Braunstein, Baruch
THE GREAT TEST: HAVE WE LEARNED THE LESSON OF THE WAR?

Imprint: No Place [Allentown]: No Publisher [Congregation Keneseth Israel], 1945
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

1st edition, original paper wrappers. 8vo, 8 pages. A sermon preached on New Year’s Morning, Saturday, September 8th, 1945 before Congregation Keneseth Israel of Allentown, Pennsylvania by Rabbi Braunstein, Ph. D. “This sermon was preached before the release on Sept. 30, 1945 of Earl G. Harrison’s Report to President Truman on the conditions of refugees and displaced persons in western Europe, and of the subsequent interchange of correspondence between the President and General Eisenhower. All of these strengthen and confirm the point-of-view expressed in this sermon. ” (page 8) Braunstein doesn’t think that the Jews who fled should have to go back to their former homes. He says, “The Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees, of which our Government is a member, recently declared that the Jewish ‘D. P. ’ will be given the opportunity to learn ‘more about conditions in his country and give the governments more time to satisfy their nationals that they can return to their countries with the prospect of leading a healthy, normal life before reaching the conclusion that the person must be treated permanently as non-repatriable. ’ These are elegant words to conceal the real decision of the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees. That decision is this: ‘Let the Jews cool off their heels in the German concentration camps until they realize they must return to their former homes’. The simplest truth is that these Jews are afraid to return to their former homes. They who have cheated death for so many years at the hands of the Germans do not want to die at the hands of the Germans, do not want to die at the hands of their former co-citizens. And if their experiences in Poland and in Slovakia and elsewhere are any indication of how the wind is blowing, they have a right to fear. They have a right to refuse to return to their former homes. I have been wondering whether the late President Roosevelt’s promise of a world in which there would be freedom from fear will ever have meaning to the displaced Jews of Europe. ” (page 6) Subjects: Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) . Brenner, David A.
GERMAN-JEWISH POPULAR CULTURE BEFORE THE HOLOCAUST: KAFKA'S KITSCH

Imprint: London, New York; Routledge, 2008
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover

Publishers Boards. 8vo. 118pages. 24cm. First edition. Using modern social theory, David Brenner examines how German-Jewish identity was influenced by the production and consumption of popular culture. Part of the “Routledge Jewish Studies Series. ” “David A. Brenner examines how Jews in Central Europe developed one of the first ‘ethnic’ or ‘minority’ cultures in modernity. Not exclusively ‘German’ or ‘Jewish, ’ the experiences of German-speaking Jewry in the decades prior to the Third Reich and the Holocaust were also negotiated in encounters with popular culture, particularly the novel, the drama and mass media. Despite recent scholarship, the misconception persists that Jewish Germans were bent on assimilation. Although subject to compulsion, they did not become solely ‘German, ’ much less ‘European. ’ Yet their behavior and values were by no means exclusively ‘Jewish, ’ as the Nazis or other anti-Semites would have it. Rather, the German Jews achieved a peculiar synthesis between 1890 and 1933, developing a culture that was not only ‘middle-class’ but also ‘ethnic. ’ In particular, they reinvented Judaic traditions by way of a hybridized culture. Based on research in German, Israeli and American archives, German-Jewish Popular Culture before the Holocaust addresses many of the genres in which a specifically German-Jewish identity was performed, from the Yiddish theatre and Zionist humour all the way to sensationalist memoirs and Kafka’s own kitsch. This middle-class ethnic identity encompassed and went beyond religious confession and identity politics. In focusing principally on German-Jewish popular culture, this groundbreaking book introduces the beginnings of ‘ethnicity’ as we know it and live it today. ” (Publisher’s description. ) Subjects: Jews in popular culture -- Germany -- History -- 20th century. Jews -- Germany -- Intellectual life -- 20th century. Popular culture -- Germany. Jews in popular culture -- Germany -- History -- 20th century. Jews -- Germany -- Intellectual life -- 20th century. JUDAISM AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN CONTEMPORARY THOUGHT: A BIBLIOGRAPHICAL SURVEY

Imprint: Westport, Conn. ; Greenwood Press, 1993
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover

Publishers cloth. 8vo. XX, 195 pages. 24 cm. First edition. “Annotated bibliography of books and articles on Judaism and human rights. This reference provides a comprehensive survey of human rights in Judaism. It includes both theoretical discussions of the nature and substance of human rights and practical applications of that theory either by Jews or to Jews. While numerous dissertations and audio-visual materials focus on human rights and Judaism, the bibliography is limited to books and articles. The majority of the works have been written in English or Hebrew, but significant studies in other languages, chiefly French and German, have also been included. The volume contains more than 700 citations, each accompanied by a descriptive annotation. The book begins with an introductory essay that examines the basic concerns of the works that follow. The annotated entries are then presented in five chapters. The first chapter includes anthologies, references, and periodicals. The second chapter includes studies of human rights in the Bible and Talmud. The third chapter includes works on Jewish theories of human rights. The fourth chapter, broken down into smaller sections, includes works on Judaism and particular human rights. The fifth chapter contains entries for works on contemporary Judaism and human rights. The volume concludes with author, title, and subject indexes. ” (Publishers description) Subjects: Human rights - Religious aspects - Judaism. Jewish ethics. Judaism - Doctrines. Judaism - 20th century. Judentum Menschenrecht Bibliographie. Light highlighting on a few pages, otherwise clean and fresh. Very good + condition. (BIBLIOG-33-14), Kra 1/13

Brill (1836-1886) was " a pioneer of the Hebrew press in Palestine. Brill left his native Russia in the late 1850s, and after much wandering went to Erez Israel. He married the daughter of Jacob Saphir , and settled in Jerusalem from where he sent reports to Hebrew newspapers in the Diaspora. Together with Joel Moses Salomon and Michael Cohen he established Jerusalem's second Hebrew printing press, and began publishing the monthly Ha-Levanon, the first Hebrew periodical to appear in Palestine. A year later the publication was suspended and Brill went to Paris. There he revived his paper in 1865, first as a biweekly and later as a weekly. After the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71) he moved to Mainz, where he established a Hebrew printing press and published Ha-Levanon as a Hebrew supplement to Der Israelit, the Orthodox German weekly. Ha-Levanon supported the halukkah and the Jerusalem rabbis. A staunch defender of religious tradition, Brill also pleaded the cause of settlement in Erez Israel along the lines attempted by members of the old yishuv, outside the Jerusalem walls, and in Petah Tikvah. After the Russian pogroms of 1881 and the rise of Hibbat Zion, Brill returned to Erez Israel at the head of a small group of Jewish farmers from Belorussia who settled in Mazkeret Batyah (Ekron) . However, he became embroiled in an argument concerning the policy of the agricultural school, Mikveh Israel, and with other settlers and left the country disillusioned. In 1884 he settled in London and began publishing the short-lived Yiddish weekly, Ha-Shulamit. Shortly before his death he revived Ha-Levanon in London, but only 11 issues appeared" (Kressel and Elkoshi in EJ, 2007) . OCLC lists 2 copies worldwide (JTS, Univ of Leeds) . Ex-library. [Broadside Celebrating The Incorporation Of Jew’s Hospital At Mt Sinai Hospital]
JEWS’ HOSPITAL IN NEW YORK. INCORPORATED FEBRUARY, 1866

Imprint: [New York], Unknown, 1866
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Broadsie

First edition. Original beautifully illustrated broadside showing the hospital and with important names of hospital directors and committees. Mounted and framed in a wooden frame. Picture 11x16.5 cm, frame 22x28. Broadside page appears to be from an event related to the official re-naming of the Jews’ Hospital in New York to Mount Sinai Hospital. Jews' Hospital (later famously renamed as Mount Sinai Hospital) was founded in 1852 by Sampson Simson (1780-1857) to address the needs of New York's rapidly growing Jewish community. At the time, New York City hospitals often discriminated against Jews - refusing them treatment as patients as well as blocking the hiring of Jewish medical staff. The Jews' Hospital in the City of New York, as it was initially called, inaugurated its first building in 1855, in what was then a rural neighborhood on West 28th Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues on land donated by Simson. Just a short few years later the 45-bed hospital would be unexpectedly filled to capacity with soldiers wounded in the U. S. Civil War. In 1866 it was renamed Mount Sinai HospitalThe medical staff was primarily Jewish, because until relatively recently, it was difficult for Jewish doctors to obtain postgraduate training or specialist posts at major New York hospitals. (See T. Levitan, Islands of Compassion: A History of the Jewish Hospitals of New York. 1964) . A comparable item but without the important listings of names sold for over USD 6, 000.00 at auction in 2015 SUBJECT(S) : Mount Sinai Hospital. Very minimal markings and wear. Slight toning. Very good + condition. Attractive. (AMR-53-8)

Jews did not begin to settle in Springfield in large numbers until the East European immigration of the 1880s, though individual Jews were recorded in the city previously, among them Leopold Karpeles (1838–1909) , a Congressional Medal of Honor winner in the Civil War who lived in Springfield before the war. The first synagogues – B'nai Jacob and Beth Israel – were organized in 1891–92, and within a decade five other Orthodox congregations were established to serve the rapidly growing community, whose numbers increased from about 300 to 3, 000 between 1901 and 1907 alone. YMHA was organized in 1905 and a Jewish Home for the Aged in 1912. ” (EJ, 2007) Fine condition. (AMR-34-37) xx
