YIDISHER FOLKLOR

Imprint: Vilne; Yidisher Visnshaftlekher Institut, Filologishe Sektsye, Komisye Far Folklor, 1938
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

Original Wraps. 8vo. XIII, 357 pages. 25 cm. First edition. In Yiddish with added title page and table of contents in Polish and English and some text in Polish. Shriftn fun Yidishn visnshaftlekhn institut; band 9; Filologishe shriftn; 5. Folklor Zydowski; Jewish folklore. Dedicated to the memory of Y. L. Cahan. “Cahan edited the fifth volume of YIVO’s Filologishe shriftn (Philological Studies) devoted to Yiddish folklore, which appeared posthumously in 1938, dedicated to his memory. ” - YIVO Encyclopedia. “The most enthusiastic and prolific zamlers were those who had been recruited by the Ethnographic Commission, known after 1930 as the Folklore Commission. In its first year, this part of the institute operated under the joint sponsorship of the An-ski Vilna Jewish Historic-Ethnographic Society. By 1929, the members of 163 zamlerkrayzn (collectors circles) had sent more than 50, 000 copies of proverbs, folktales, and folk songs to YIVO. The analysis and publication of this material proceeded more slowly, in part because the leading folklorist, Y. L. Cahan, was living in New York. Cahan’s visit to Vilna in 1930 spurred work, but the fruits of the zamlers’ labor appeared in print only in 1938 as Yidisher folklor (Yiddish Folklore) . ” - YIVO Encyclopedia. THE RISE OF THE KARAITE SECT: NEW LIGHT ON THE HALAKAH AND ORIGIN OF THE KARAITES (AUTHOR INSCRIBED)

Imprint: New York, M. Tausner Publishing Co., 1937
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Cloth

First edition. 8vo, Original red printed publisher's cloth, 128 pages. "It is deplorable that the study of Karaitism had not received by a great number of our scholars its due attention. It seems that other epochs and events in Jewish history were more attractive to the Jewish research mind than the struggle between the Karaites and Rabbanites, which had its inception in Babylonia in the middle of the Eighth Century, and continued for many centuries after. The polemic literature inherited by us from our Rabbis of old, as well as from the Karaite writers, is of no value at all in his investigation. The research work that has been made in this somehow neglected field by the author, has had as its main object the juxtaposition of the Karaite Halakah with that of the Rabbis, in order to determine to what extent they differ. A complementary concern has been the origin of the Karaites. This vexing problem, with its uncertainty, found itself in the main body of our research, and an endeavor has been made to clarify it. With this in mind, I present this volume to the interested reader" (from the preface). Ex-library with usual markings, wear to lower spine. Good+ Condition. (BIB-17-5a)

THE IMAGE OF THE JEW IN POLISH FOLK CULTURE

Imprint: Jerusalem; Magnes Press, Hebrew University, 1995
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

Original wraps. 8vo. 235, [8] pages. 22 cm. First English edition. Polish title: Wizerunek Z? Yda w polskiej kulturze ludowej. With 8 pages of black and white plates. “The subject in the title of this book has not been taken up too often. Polish historiography and ethnography have avoided delving into the problems of Polish-Jewish relations, probably because it was (and still is) an emotional subject, painful for some and irritating to others. The last half-century has not afforded many opportunities for a dispassionate exchange of opinions as the last war brought about the extermination of the Polish Jews and put an end to the discussion once and for all. The history of the towns and economy of Poland cannot be written without discussing the activities of Jews. Closely connected with this problem is the question of the Jew's place in the social hierarchy and consequently - mutual attitudes. This study is an attempt to present the picture of intergroup contacts as it has been preserved in people's memory. It is also an effort to reconstruct the model of behaviours towards a community seen as alien. ” (Publishers Description) . In the series: Studies of the Center for Research on the History and Culture of Polish Jews, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Subjects: Jews - Poland -Public opinion. Jews - Poland - Folklore. Public opinion - Poland. Antisemitism - Poland. Folklore - Poland. Volkscultuur. Beeldvorming. O¨ffentliche Meinung Volkskultur. Poland - Ethnic relations. From Bucharest he arrived in Mandatory Palestine, from where he then went to New York, where he pursued a career studying the history and culture of Transylvania's Hungarian-speaking Jews. After 1989 he contributed to the creation of the Carmilly-Weinberger Institute for the study of Hebrew and Jewish History, which operates within the framework of the Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania) . Here he organized many conferences and lectures about the history of Transylvanian Jews, their traditions, and their culture. THE RABBINICAL SEMINARY OF BUDAPEST, 1877-1977: A CENTENNIAL VOLUME

Imprint: New York: Published By Sepher-Hermon Press For The Alumni Association Of The Rabbinical Seminary Of Budapest, 1986
Binding: Hardback

Hardcover, 8vo, xiii, 334, 56 pages, 11 pages of plates, illustrated, 24 cm. “When the Nazis occupied Hungary on March 19, 1944, the seminary building was sacked. By admitting all applicants – there were 174 students registered in 1944 – it saved some young men from deportation. Ninety graduates and over 60 students died in the Holocaust. With the liberation of Hungary by the Russians in 1945, the seminary gradually rebuilt its life under the present government, though on a limited scale. It trained Hebrew teachers and expanded the Tarbut high school with special emphasis on modern Hebrew. It maintained contact with Jewish scholars the world over and remained the only rabbinical seminary in Eastern Europe, housing a 150, 000-volume library and serving students from neighboring countries into the 21st century” (EJ, 2007) . Imprint: Paris, Durlacher,, 1900

Softcover, 26 pages, 12mo. In French. James Darmesteter (28 March 1849 – 19 October 1894) was a “French author, orientalist, and antiquarian. He was born of Jewish parents at Château Salins, in Alsace…. He was educated in Paris, where, under the guidance of Michel Bréal and Abel Bergaigne, he imbibed a love for Oriental studies, to which for a time he entirely devoted himself. In 1875 he published a thesis on the mythology of the Avesta, and in 1877 became teacher of Persian language at the École des Hautes Études. He continued his research with his Études iraniennes (1883) , and ten years later published a complete translation of the Avesta and associated Zend (lit. ‘commentary’) , with historical and philological commentary of his own (Zend Avesta, 3 vols. , 1892-1893) in the Annales du Musée Guimet. He also edited the Avesta for Max Müller's Sacred Books of the East series (vols. 4 and 23) …. In 1885 he was appointed professor in the Collège de France, and was sent to India in 1886 on a mission to collect the popular songs of the Afghans, a translation of which, with a valuable essay on the Afghan language and literature, he published on his return. His impressions of English dominion in India were conveyed in Lettres sur l'Inde (1888) . England interested him deeply; and his attachment to the gifted English writer, Agnes Mary Frances Robinson, whom he shortly afterwards married (and who in 1901 became the wife of Professor E. Duclaux, director of the Pasteur Institute at Paris) , led him to translate her poems into French in 1888. Two years after his death a collection of excellent essays on English subjects was published in English. He also wrote Le Mahdi depuis les origines de l'Islam jusqu'a nos jours (1885) ; Les Origines de la poesie persane (1888) ; Prophètes d'Israel (1892) , and other books on topics connected with the East, and from 1883 onwards drew up the annual reports of the Société Asiatique” (Wikipedia, 2010) . Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover

FT) Later Cloth. 8vo. XIV, 74 pages. 22 cm. First Edition. In Hebrew and German. Bound in later black cloth with marbled endpages. Title translates as: “Second Targum of the Book of Esther: the vocalists Original text with professional and linguistic explanations. ” Paulus Stephanus Cassel, “convert to Christianity and missionary to the Jews; born Feb. 27, 1821, in Gross-Glogau, Silesia; died Dec. 23, 1892, in Friedenau, near Berlin. His father was a sculptor, and his brother David was docent at the Berlin "Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judenthums. " Cassel studied at the gymnasium at Schweidnitz and at the University of Berlin, where he followed with special attention the lectures of Leopold Ranke. In 1849 he edited in Erfurt "Die Constitutionelle Zeitung, " and in 1850-56 "Die Erfurter Zeitung, " in a royalist spirit. He was baptized May 28, 1855, in Buessleben, near Erfurt, and became librarian of the Royal Library and secretary of the Academy in Erfurt in the following year. He remained in Erfurt till 1859. Frederick William IV bestowed the title of professor on Cassel in recognition of his loyal labors. In 1860 he removed to Berlin, where he was a teacher at a gymnasium for a short time, and occupied himself with literary work. In 1866-67 he was a Conservative member of the Prussian Chamber of Deputies. In 1867 Cassel was appointed missionary by the London Society for Promoting Christianity Among the Jews, a position which he retained till March, 1891. At the same time (1867) Cassel was assigned to the pastorate of the Christuskirche in Berlin, remaining in service for twenty-four years. In a pamphlet published a short time before his death, he complains of the inconsiderate treatment he had received at the hands of his Christian friends (see "Sendschreiben an Freunde in Deutschland und England über die Christuskirche in Berlin und Ihr Martyrium Durch die London Society, " Berlin, 1891) . H. L. Strack confesses that it is not clear what induced Cassel to join the Christian Church, though he contends that Cassel's reasons were obviously not mercenary (see Herzog-Hauck, "Real-Encyc. " iii. 744) . Cassel combated anti-Semitism with considerable warmth (in "Wider Heinrich von Treitschke für die Juden, " Berlin, 1880; "Die Antisemiten und die Evangelische Kirche, " 2d ed. , Berlin, 1881; "Ahasverus, die Sage vom Ewigen Juden mit einem Kritischen Protest Wider Ed. Von Hartmann und Adolf Stöcker, " Berlin, 1885; also "Der Judengott und Richard Wagner, eine Antwort an die Bayreuther Blätter") . … The original text of the Second Targum Cassel published in "Aus Litteratur und Gesch. " Berlin and Leipsic, 1885: "Zweites Targum zum Buche Esther, im Vocalisierten Urtext mit Sachlichen und Sprachlichen Erläuterungen Herausgegeben. " An English translation by Aaron Bernstein was published in Edinburgh in 1888.” (From the 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) . The volume we have is solely that of the “Zweites Targum. ” Subjects: Bible. O.
