Church Of Jesus Christ Christian, Aryan Nations
ARYAN NATIONS CATALOG

Imprint: Hayden, Idaho : Church Of Jesus Christ Christian, [1985]
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

1st Edition. Original Wrappers. 4to. 5 pages ; 28 cm. In English. Date is approximated from the listed material. In 2001, the Aryan Nations compound in Hayden Lake, Idaho was shuttered, famously bankrupted by litigation from the Southern Poverty Law Center. “Aryan Nations is a white supremacist religious organization originally based in Hayden, Idaho. Richard Girnt Butler founded the group in the 1970s, as an arm of the Christian Identity organization Church of Jesus Christ–Christian. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has called Aryan Nations a ‘terrorist threat’, and the RAND Corporation has called it the ‘first truly nationwide terrorist network’ in the United States… From the late 1970s until 2001, the Aryan Nations headquarters was located in a 20-acre (8.1 ha) compound 1.8 miles (3 km) north of Hayden, Idaho. There were a number of state chapters, only loosely tied to the main organization. The group ran an annual World Congress of Aryan Nations at Hayden Lake for Aryan Nations members and for members of similar groups. ” (Wikipedia, 2017) This catalog and order-form contains listings for mostly bigoted, anti-semitic and racist books and pamphlets. The catalog was probably used in part for dissemination in prisons. OCLC lists 1 copy worldwide (BOISE STATE UNIV. ) Pages are worn and creased. In good condition. (holo2-135-35)

Chwolson, D. [Khvol’son, Chvol'son, Daniil Abraamovich]. Translated by Eph M. Epstein.
THE SEMITIC NATIONS

Imprint: Cincinnati: Bloch, 1874
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

1st English Language edition. Later paper wrappers, 8vo, 55 pages, 22 cm. Singerman 2453. Daniel Abramovich Chwolson (1819-1911) "was a Russian-Jewish orientalist…Chwolson went to Breslau in 1841, and, after three years' preparation in the classical languages, entered Breslau University, where he devoted himself to the Oriental languages, especially Arabic. There he studied until 1848, and in 1850 he received the degree of doctor of philosophy at Leipzig University. On his return to Russia he settled in St. Petersburg….In 1855, being highly appreciated in learned circles, and having embraced Christianity, he was appointed extraordinary professor of Oriental languages in the university. Three years later he received a similar appointment in the Dukhovnaya Akademiya (Theological Academy)....The learned world in 1899 celebrated Chwolson's literary jubilee by presenting him with a collection of articles written in his honor by prominent European scholars. This was published by Baron David Günzburg under the title Recueil des travaux rédigés en mémoire du jubilé scientifique de M. Daniel Chwolson, Berlin, 1899. Blood libel accusations had been brought against the Jews of Saratov in 1857, and the government summoned a commission of scholars to see whether any passages could be found in Jewish literature recommending the use of Christian blood for ritual purposes. Chwolson, who was appointed a member of the commission, wrote a report in which he demonstrated the groundlessness of the accusations in general, and pointed out that in the particular case of Saratov the evidence given by the two principal witnesses was full of contradictions and absurdities. The investigation extended over a period of nine years. Chwolson secured permission to publish his memoir, which appeared in 1861 as O nekotorykh srednevekovykh obvineniyakh protiv evreyev ("On several medieval accusations against the Jews").In 1877 Chwolson saw a new blood accusation brought against Jews at Kutais, Transcaucasia. At the same time several Russian anti-Semitic writers undertook a campaign against the Talmud, repeating the old charge that it contained blasphemies against Jesus. Chwolson again took up the defense of the Jews, and republished his memoir with many additions (St. Petersburg, 1880). A German edition of this work appeared in the year 1901 under the title Die Blutanklage und Sonstige Mittelalterliche Beschuldigungen der Juden. In this edition Chwolson, before entering into a discussion of the blood question, expounds the history of the Talmud, and shows that the "Pharisees" condemned by Jesus in the Gospels were not the Rabbinites in general and that it was not the Pharisees but the Sadducees who were the enemies and persecutors of Jesus. He further demonstrates that, according to Talmudic law, Jews were bound to look upon Christians as their brethren, the assertions to the contrary being due partly to misconception, partly to hatred. The deep-rooted belief that Jesus was crucified by the Jews being the principal cause of the prejudice against them on the part of the Christians, Chwolson, in a dissertation entitled Poslyedniyaya paskhalnaya vecherya Isusa Christa i den' yevo smerti (St. Petersburg, 1875; German translation, Das letzte Passamal Christi, 1892) shows the groundlessness of this belief, pointing out that the proceedings of the trial and condemnation of Jesus, as related in the Gospels, were in violation of the rabbinical laws and consequently could not have been conducted by a Jewish tribunal. He defended the Jewish people as well as Judaism. In a work entitled Kharakteristika semitskikh narodov published in The Russian Messenger, 1872 (German ed., Berlin, 1872), he draws a parallel between the distinguishing characteristics of the Jew, the representative of the Semitic race, and those of the Greek, the representative of the Aryan peoples, not always to the advantage of the latter. The pamphlet was translated into English under the title The Semitic Nations (Cincinnati, 1874).....Chwolson was an indefatigable collector of Hebrew books, and his collection of Hebrew incunabula was valuable. A catalogue of his Hebrew books was published by him under the title Reshimat Sifre Yisrael, Vilna, 1897” (Wikipedia). SUBJECT (S) : Semites. Civilization, Semitic. Jews. Renan, Ernest, 1823-1892. (Civil War) Mayer, Nathan

Imprint: Hartford, Press Of The Case, Lockwood & Brainard Co., 1894
Edition: First Edition

1st edition. Original Blue and White Boards. 13 leaves plates ; 22 cm. In English. This is a poem about the Battle of Antietam written by a Jewish Union surgeon who served in the battle, and throughout the civil war. Mayer wrote the poem for the dedication of a monument established for his 16th Connecticut regiment. “Although Jews had not been allowed to serve in the military throughout most of European history, they had played a role in the defense of their communities in North America since the 1600s… Dr. Nathan Mayer joined the army as an assistant surgeon in a Connecticut regiment of volunteers. He soon became a full surgeon and served at many of the most important battles of the war. At Antietam, he used a farmhouse as a field hospital where he had some success using chloroform, an early anesthetic. ” The battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single-day battle in America History. In the poem, Mayer writes, “To all who in this holy strife/Went forward with their sweet young life/Prepared to give. And let it show/Set high in noonday’s golden glow/Upon this verdant field of blood/That life is not the highest good/but higher, holier, sweeter far/Are life’s ideals. Like a star…” Mayer was later captured with his regiment and held by confederate troops for seven months. (History of the Jews in America: Civil War Through the Rise of Zionism, Volume 2, by Shelley Kapnek Rosenberg, 2005) OCLC lists 19 copies worldwide. SCRIPTURE FOR THE EYES: BIBLE ILLUSTRATION IN NETHERLANDISH PRINTS OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY

Imprint: New York: Museum Of Biblical Art; London: In Association With D Giles Ltd, 2009
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

Original Wraps. 4to. 225 pages. 25 x 29 cm. First edition. Catalog accompanying an exhibition held at the Museum of Biblical Art, June 5-Sept. 27, 2009 and at the Michael C. Carlos Museum, Emory University, Oct. 17, 2009-Jan. 24, 2010. "This scholarly publication accompanies the exhibition Scripture for the Eyes, focusing attention on the extraordinarily rich array of biblical prints produced in the Low Countries (comprising today's Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg) during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, a time of dynamic and sometimes violent religious and political change. In particular, the book studies the crucial role played by scriptural prints in the complex processes of religious self-formation that dominated early modern European culture. Following early modern usage, the prints - woodcuts, engravings, and etchings by such artists as Lucas van Leyden, Jan Swart van Groningen, Maarten van Heemskerck, Philips Galle, Hendrick Goltzius, and Hieronymus Wierix, among others - are classed into five functional groups: Sacred History and Geography, Exegesis, Worship, Morality, and Politics and Polemics. In addition to a preface by James Clifton and the main interpretative essay by Walter Mellon, the volume also contains an extensive bibliography. ” (Publishers Description) . FRANZ ROSENZWEIG (IN CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM VOL. VIII, NO. 1 NOVEMBER 1951)

Imprint: New York: Rabbinical Assembly Of America, 1951
Binding: Hardback

Serial, 8vo. , 31 pages. Essay on pages 1-13 on Rosenzweig, including sections on his education, his philosophy, religious crisis, Judaism and Metaphysics, and role as an educator. Rosenzweig, the renowned German Jewish philosopher, “was born in Kassel, Germany, the only son of well-to-do parents. His father Georg financially supported many charity institutions, including the Jewish community, but the family's adherence to Judaism was minimal. In his youth, Franz came under the influence of his great-uncle, Adam Rosenzweig, a bachelor, an artist and a learned Jew, who lived in the Rosenzweig home and spent many hours with Franz. Through him the young boy learned of the Jewish world in an otherwise assimilated milieu. Unlike the rest of his family, Rosenzweig fasted on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) and also took private Hebrew lessons…In 1909, Rosenzweig tended towards assimilation, and justified the conversion of his cousin Hans Ehrenberg to Christianity. He did not see the advantage that Judaism could have over Christianity, the dominant culture, which would also help him obtain a teaching position, almost impossible for a Jew to get. Another cousin and friend, Rudolf Ehrenberg was already born a Christian. Eugen Rosenstock , a Jewish convert to Christianity, became Rosenzweig's closest friend. Rosenstock, who would become an important nonconformist Protestant theologian, repeatedly urged him to abandon what he considered Rosenzweig's merely nominal Judaism and to convert. After months of deep conversations, and especially the catastrophic conversation with Rosenstock during the night of July 7, 1913, Rosenzweig decided to convert. But he then made the condition, to convert not "as a pagan, " but "as a Jew. " All this led to a crisis and almost to suicide. He left his converted friends for a few years and refrained from having any contact with them. In the same year, on Yom Kippur of 1913, he attended in Berlin the synagogue of Rabbi Petuchowski and felt a profound identification with the praying Jewish community. After a few days he wrote his friends, "I shall remain a Jew. " He then reshaped his life, rethought his identity, and devoted his further life to a sincere return to Judaism, moving from the periphery of Jewish life to its center. ” (Meir, Horwitz, EJ, 2007) . Also includes an article on prayer, and on Professor Louis Ginzberg. Cover slightly tanned. Very good condition. (RAB-36-6)

JEWISH AND ROMAN LAW : A COMPARATIVE STUDY. COMPLETE IN TWO VOLUMES.

Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover

8vo. Vol.1: xxvii, 408 pages; Vol.2: xxvii, 897, 22 (Hebrew) pages. First edition. English and Hebrew. Includes multiple indexes, Hebrew essay. SUBJECT(S) : Roman law; Jewish law; Comparative law. “Cohen [1899-1968] was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and in 1924 was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he began teaching the following year and remained for the rest of his career... He was secretary of the Committee on Jewish Law of the Rabbinical Assembly of America, 1933–45, and chairman, 1945–48. He wrote thousands of opinions responding to every facet of Jewish life in America as he considered the request of rabbis and the needs of their congregants, including adoption and conversion. His judgment was restrained. Halakhah could not solve every problem and its processes must be respected and its authority protected. He led a committee to study the issue of the agunah, but out of respect for the unity of the Jewish people would not permit unilateral action by the Conservative Rabbinate. He was a leading expert on Jewish divorce law, and...the divorce documents that he supervised were recognized and respected by Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik and the Rabbinical Council of America despite the fact that Cohen was on the faculty of the Jewish Theological Seminary. A man of gentle disposition and immense erudition, his knowledge was far-ranging, including Greek and Roman, Canon, Islamic, and American law and Assyrian and Babylonian literature. Cohen was one of the first American-born and American-educated scholars to make significant contributions to the scientific study of rabbinic literature. ” (EJ, 2007) Very good condition +.
