Council On Foreign Relations; Bowman, Isaiah
STUDIES OF AMERICAN INTERESTS IN THE WAR AND THE PEACE : TERRITORIAL SERIES. SUBJECT: REFUGEE SETTLEMENT

Imprint: New York : Council On Foreign Relations, 1940
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

1st Edition. Stated, "Preliminary Memorandum: First Draft. " Original Wrappers. 4to. 4 pages ; 28 cm. "Strictly Confidential. " A Memorandum for Discussion on refugee settlement. Prepared by Isaiah Bowman, a notoriously anti-Semitic academic (and then-president of Johns-Hopkins University) who was for the Fourth Meeting of the Territorial Group, May 20th 1940. "If Germany wins, she will wish to keep all the population that she controls, for population means power, with the exception perhaps of the Jewish elements. In the matter of Jewish refugees it is even possible that she may reverse her policy (if she wins) because of the use she would desire to make of the abilities of part of this group. " "Isaiah Bowman (1878 1950) was an American geographer and President of the Johns Hopkins University In 1939 Roosevelt appointed Bowman to lead a search for an appropriate refuge for Jewish emigrants from Europe. Bowman's team looked for uninhabited or sparsely settled land on five continents, but not in the US. Bowman's opposition to accepting Jewish refugees stemmed from his deep antisemitism. At the Johns Hopkins University, he established an anti-Jewish admissions quota in 1945, just as other leading universities were dismantling their quota systems, on grounds that Jews were an alien threat to American culture Before and during World War II he served on the Council of Foreign Relations' War and Peace Studies project as chairman of its territorial group. LA SAGESSE DU SOUVERAIN DANS LES MOYENS DE RENDRE LE COMMERCE FLORISSANT

Imprint: Leiden, Elie Luzac, 1773
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

First edition. Blue paper wrappers. 8vo. 4, 84 pages, 22 cm. In French. Title translates to “The Wisdom of the Sovereign in Finding Ways to Establish a Flourishing Trade. ” Title in red and black and with engraved vignette. The author describes here the economies of different countries during the course of various eras. He posits that freedom of religion is one of the prerequisites for creating a prosperous national economy, examples of failure in that regard is France- who drove out the Huguenots and Spain and Portugal who expelled the Jews. “Certainly the Inquisition is blind, superstitious and cruel for pushing the Jews to desert Portugal and Spain - [eventually] bringing them to Amsterdam, where wise-men welcomed them with kindness. There, the [Jews] encouraged flourishing trade practices which they spread around the world, while in Spain and Portugal [trade] collapsed. That is why in order to populate our provinces and have them grow prosperous, our wiser nations should welcome the stranger… and let all freely practice his religion” (p. 16) . Imprint: New York: the American News Company, 1878
Binding: Harcover.

Original illustrated boards, 12mo, vii, 399 pages. Includes illustrations and index. Jennie June's American Cookery Book marked the first appearance of explicitly Jewish recipes in a non-Jewish cook book, giving them the space of an entire chapter, pages 319-325. Their inclusion was an indication of the growing view that Jews were in fact part of the American fabric and not simply a foreign group to be assimilated and normalized. The author informs us that the Jewish recipes are "all original and reliable, - the contribution of a superior Jewish housekeeper in New York."  In addition to its general cookery category, other general related topics are cross-referenced as well. SUBJECT(S): Cooking, American.  OCLC: 7583742. Substantial wear to boards, some pencil marks and stains as expected. Lacks front blank endpaper, corner torn off margin of title and one other page, no text affected. Paper remains good and strong, solid complete well used period cookbook. About Good Condition. Postcard from Hadassah Reinhard in Tel Aviv to Gerhard Reinhard in Gurs Concentration Camp, dated June 14, 1941. Over 163 words, in period-script German, in ink. Beginning “Dear Grandfather, ” and wishing the recipient a happy 75th birthday, Hadassah writes, “I pray to God that you can soon come to me in good health…. From Granny and everyone in Poland and Siberia we hear absolutely nothing…. The picture is not good…. Your youngest grandchild, Hadassah. ” Gurs was a major internment camp in France, near Oloron-Sainte-Marie and 80 kilometers from the Spanish border. Established in 1939 to absorb Republican refugees from Spain, Gurs served later as a concentration camp for Jews from France and refugees from other countries. While under the administration of Vichy France (1940-1942) most non-Jewish prisoners were released and approximately 2000 Jews were permitted to emigrate. In 1941 Gurs held some 15, 000 prisoners. The camp was controlled by the Germans from 1942 to 1944, during which time several thousand inmates were deported to extermination camps in Poland. An unknown number succeeded in escaping and reaching Spain or hiding in Southern France. Gurs was liberated in the summer of 1944. No stamp or postmark, presume originally delivered in envelope. Few incoming postcards into Gurs survived. Usual stains and wear, 4 faint slices into paper, Good- Condition. (holo2-131-38)
