Eitinger, Leo; Axel Strøm
MENNESKER BLANT MENNESKER: EN BOK OM ANTISEMITTISME OG FREMMEDHAT

Imprint: Oslo; Cappelen, 1985
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover

Publishers cloth. 8vo. 171, [1] pages. 21 cm. First edition. In Norwegian. Title translates as: “People among the people: a book on anti-Semitism and xenophobia. ” Written by Leo Eitinger (1912 - 1996) , Holocaust survivor, Norwegian psychiatrist, and Human Rights advocate. “He devoted a long period studying late-onset psychological trauma amongst Holocaust survivors, wherein Holocaust survivors like Paul Celan, Primo Levi and many others committed suicide due to holocaust trauma, several decades after the experience, towards late adulthood. Leo Eitinger was born in Lomnice, Moravia, at that time a town in the Austrian-Hungarian empire; currently the capital of Jihomoravský kraj and belonging to the Czech Republic. He studied medicine at the Masaryk University of Brno, graduated in 1937, and was drafted as an officer into the Czech Air Force. In 1939 he fled Nazi persecution of Jews and came to Norway as a refugee with the help of Nansenhjelpen. Upon arriving in Norway, he arranged for Jewish children to escape from Czechoslovakia to settle in the Jewish orphanage in Oslo. He was given permission to work as a resident in psychiatry in Norway in Bodø, but the permission was revoked by the Nazis after they invaded the country in 1940. He stayed underground from January 1941 until he was arrested in March 1942. He was imprisoned in various places throughout Norway and was deported on the ship Gotenland on February 24, 1943, arriving by train via Berlin at the concentration camp at Auschwitz (where the number 105268 was tattoed on his arm) and was later moved to Buchenwald. Of the 762 Jews deported from Norway to German concentration camps, only 23 survived - Leo Eitinger was one of them. After returning to Norway he specialised in psychiatry. In 1966 Leo Eitinger was appointed professor of psychiatry at the University of Oslo and became Head of the University Psychiatric Clinic. After the war Leo Eitinger allocated all his time and efforts to the study of human suffering with emphasis on clinical psychiatry, in particular victimology and disaster psychiatry. He conducted several landmark studies about the long-term psychological and physical effects of extreme stress and also about being a refugee. Some of the major works have been published; e. G. Concentration camp survivors in Norway and Israel (1964) ; Mortality and morbidity after extreme stress (1973) ; Strangers in the world (1981) ” (University of Oslo description) Subjects: Antisemitism -- History. Race Relations. Jews. Popular Works [PT]. Sociology. OCLC lists 16 copies. Pages lightly aged, contain consistent penciled marks throughout, and penciled notes on endpages. Otherwise fresh. (FT) Hardcover, 8vo, 221 pages, 23 cm. In Hebrew. Edition: Mahad. Hadashah ? Im hosafot v? E-tikunim. Series: Sifre Mekhon Zekher Naftali; Variation: Sifre Mekhon Zekher Naftali. SUBJECT(S) : Hasidism. Jewish meditations. Includes bibliographical references on pages 214-221 and indexes. Other Titles: Or Elimelekh. Elimelech of Lyzhansk (1717-1787) was a “popular zaddik of the third generation of ? Asidim and one of the founders of Hasidism in Galicia. Elimelech was a disciple of Dov Baer the Maggid of Mezhirech and is considered the theoretician and creator of “practical zaddikism. ” Elimelech and his brother Zusya of Hanipol traveled from village to village, according to the principle of nedudei galut, i. E. , their travels, symbolically expressing their identification with the wanderings of the shekhinah. According to a later interpretation, the purpose of their wanderings was the promotion of repentance. After the death of Dov Baer, Elimelech settled in Lyzhansk, Galicia, which as a result became an important ? Asidic center. He headed a court financed by pidyonot, i. E. , a system of internal taxes paid to the zaddik usually accompanied by kvitlakh, slips on which the Hasidim wrote their spiritual and material problems for the zaddik to solve. Letters published under his name show his attitude toward the quarrels between the Hasidim and the Mitnaggedim. Elimelech is also mentioned in the indictments against the Hasidim in Sefer ha-Vikku’ah and in Zemir Arizim. In his letters, he defends himself against the objections of the Mitnaggedim to Hasidim praying according to the Sephardi ritual. Elimelech cited as proof Joseph Caro and even Moses Isserles, who according to him established the Ashkenazi ritual for the general community, but not for the pious who had attained a higher plane of faith. Elimelech was ascetic, but he did not regard asceticism as the way of life for all. According to him, asceticism corresponds to the “breaking of the vessels” in Lurianic Kabbalah, whose purpose is tikkun. However, it is not the only path to tikkun; for “one zaddik reaches tikkun through eating and another, through asceticism” (Liebes in EJ, 2007) . OCLC lists 7 copies worldwide. Very good condition. Elina, Odette
SANS FLEURS NI COURONNES

Imprint: Bourges: Editions J. F. Boulet, 1948
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Paperback

1st edition, original portfolio wrappers, 8vo. 53 pages, plus many blank and unnumbered pages. Illustrations throughout. In French. Title translates as, “Without Flowers Nor Crowns.” This book is told “in the first person, in a succession of scenes, impressions, portraits, thoughts, reflections and emotions that, in chapters very brief and titled, make up a devastating panorama about Elina’s experience in Auschwitz.” (elcultural.com 2018). "When I returned from Auschwitz in 1945, I felt what I had just experienced with such acuteness that it was impossible for me to keep it to myself. I recorded it in notes and drawings. This constituted ‘Without flowers nor Crowns.’ I do not regret having written these notes as soon as I returned from camp because, over time, memories become distorted, they become watered down or dramatized, but always move away from the truth. (...)" Odette Elina (1910-1991) was a “painter, was deported by the Gestapo to Auschwitz-Birkenau in April 1944 as a communist, but above all and above all because she was Jewish. In 1940, she entered the French Resistance network, she had had an initial function to establish the liaison between the writers residing in the South zone (notably Mauriac, Aragon and Julien Benda) before entering the Secret Army in 1942. We actually know very little about the biographical career of Elina before and after her deportation, apart from her exacerbated desire on leaving the Camp to testify to her life in the Camp. ‘Without Flowers nor Crowns’, [was] originally published in 1948 in the wake of the first testimonies…on the Holocaust that appeared in the post-war years..." (Isabelle Dumont).  SUBJECT(S): World War, 1939-1945 -- Prisoners and prisons, German. Guerre mondiale (1939-1945) -- Camps de concentration -- Récits personnels. Französin. Elina, Odette. Auschwitz (Concentration camp). Konzentrationslager. OCLC: 58452978 (2005 edition by later publisher, with the OCLC record incorrectly listing the original 1st edition as 1947 instead of 1948).  OCLC lists no 1948 (or 1947) copies online. Pages are loose as issued, in an illustrated portfolio. This book is one of 270 numbered copies. Illustrated with 12 inset drawings, one reproduced on the cover; the title page mentions 13 drawings (?), but there are only 12, the same number as reproduced in the 1982 reissue [and also in the other copy of this first edition we examined], so "13" would seem to be incorrect or possibly counting the repeated drawing on the cover. Portfolio is slightly rubbed with short closed tear at lower front inside fold and spine has some creasing, else Very Good Condition. Important and exceedingly rare (HOLO2-141-27-IIIXX)

Elizabeth, Charlotte
JUDAH’S LION [THE FIRST ENGLISH-LANGUAGE ZIONIST NOVEL]

Imprint: New York; M. W. Dodd, 1843
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

Publishers cloth. 16mo. 406 pages. 16 cm. First edition. Added title page, engraved. Singerman 0832. This novel is considered to be the first English language ‘Zionist Novel’ (it predates George Eliot’s ‘Daniel Deronda’ by thirty years) ; the story concerns the return of an English Jew (Alick) to the Holy Land; it binds together English and Jewish history. This was the last novel the author wrote. Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna (1790-1846) wrote on the plight of English factory workers, was well known in her time for her novels and her Orange-Protestant essays and poems, was passionate about gardening, a pioneer of deaf education, and also wrote children’s stories. In her later years she defended the rights of Judaism, and in her last three years was a close friend of Moses Montefiore, owing to her fundraising on behalf of the Jews of Mogador in 1844 (she raised the most money of anyone for the Jewish community in the besieged Moroccan coastal city) , her public protest against the policies of Tsar Nicholas I towards Jews, and her 1844 letter to the Bishop of Jerusalem, entitled ‘Israel’s Ordinances. ’ “As Tonna’s health deteriorated rapidly, the Montefiores became devoted friends. When she set out on her final journey to Ramsgate from London, it was Montefiore who bade her farewell at the train station and handed her a basket of grapes. “ (Pg. 215; ‘Moses Montefiore: Jewish Liberator, Imperial Hero’; by Abigail Green) . Her work, "Days of Old, ’ by Charlotte Elizabeth (Mrs. Tonner) ” was part of the sixth volume published by the American Jewish Publication Society in 1847 (Jewish Miscellany no. VI; which also includes two works by Isaac Leeser, “Rachel Levi, A Tale” and “The Jews and Their Religion”) , two years after the society was founded by Isaac Leeser (EJ 1906; American Jewish Publication Society) . Bound in black cloth with gilt title on spine. Subjects: Jews - Fiction. Fiction (English) . OCLC lists 20 copies. The last copy offered at auction was over 30 years ago in 1987. P. GYLLII DE CONSTANTINOPOLEOS TOPOGRAPHIA LIB. IV

Imprint: Ex typis Elzevirianis [Barbou], Lugduni Batavorum [Paris], 1632
Binding: Hardcover

Second Bonaventure and Abraham Elzevier edition, more beautiful and more correct than their first release of the same year. Modern green boards, 64mo (2”x3”, miniature), 422+ [6] pages. In Latin. Illustrated title page which includes a nice title-frontispiece on copper showing, among others, a bird’s eye view of Constantinople from the harbor. Willems, 367.The author had been commissioned by Francois I to the Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. He left a testimony of the greatest importance describing Constantinople at the time of the great architectural upheavals. Thanks to him, one can locate most of the destroyed ancient buildings. The Elzevirs were “a celebrated family of Dutch booksellers, publishers, and printers of the 17th and early 18th centuries. The duodecimo series of ‘Elzevirs’ became very famous and very desirable among bibliophiles, who sought to obtain the tallest and freshest copies of these tiny books….The family ceased printing in 1712…Bonaventura Elzevir (1583–1652)...began business as a publisher in 1608, and in 1626 took into partnership Abraham Elzevir, his nephew….Abraham died on 14 August 1652, and Bonaventura about a month afterwards. The fame of the Elzevir editions rests chiefly on the works issued by the firm of Bonaventura and Abraham….their small editions in 12mo, 16mo and 24mo, for elegance of design, neatness, clearness and regularity of type, and beauty of paper, cannot be surpassed….Between 1626 and 1649, Bonaventure and Abraham Elzevir published a bestselling series titled the Respublicae (commonly known as the Republics or Petites Républiques), the ancestor of the modern travel guide. Each of the thirty-five volumes in the series gave information on the geography, inhabitants, economy, and history of a country in Europe, Asia, Africa, or the Near East” (Wikipedia). ZERA EFRAYIM: ... SHENE PERUSHIM AL PESIKTA RABATI DE-RAV KAHANA

Imprint: Lemberg: Gedruckt Bei M. F. Poremba, 1853
Binding: Hardback

(FT) Hardcover, 8vo, 97 leaves, 25 cm. In Hebrew. Other Titles: Pesikta rabbati. Margolioth (1760-1828) was a “rabbi and author. Ephraim studied under his uncle, Alexander Margolioth, rabbi of Satanov, Isaac of Ostrow, author of Berit Kehunnat Olam, and Ezekiel Landau. In his youth he was rabbi of Ohanov, but later left the rabbinate, according to some reports declining an offer of the rabbinate of Frankfurt. Ephraim settled in Brody and went into business, in which he was highly successful. He owned commercial establishments in Vienna and it was said of him: "From the time of the minister Saul Wahl there has not been Torah and wealth such as belong to Margolioth. " He spent most of his time in study, leaving the conduct of his business to his partner Simeon Dishze. He also studied esoteric works with a group of kabbalists at Brody, and had a sound knowledge of history. Margolioth wrote many books and exchanged responsa with the greatest rabbis of his time, with some of whom he maintained close relations. He was involved in the controversy caused by Joshua Heshel Zoref’s book Ha-Zoref and established the fact that it had strong leanings toward Shabbateanism. He also contended with the communal leaders of Brody over the leniency extended to the wealthy parnasim under the prevailing system of communal taxation and demanded their full participation in community expenditure. Margolioth gave his approbation to a great number of books, including many by hasidic rabbis. His own works, which appeared in many editions, and many of his halakhic decisions have been accepted. His works include Beit Efrayim, part 1 entitled Peri Tevu’ah, with commentary Rosh Efrayim; part 2 Shulhan Arukh, Yoreh De’ah; responsa Beit Efrayim; and another collection of responsa Beit Efrayim; Shem Efrayim, on Rashi’s commentary to the Pentateuch and haftarot; Zera Efrayim on the Pesikta Rabbati; Yad Efrayim, on Shulhan Arukh, Orah Hayyim. He also wrote Ma’alot ha-Yuhasin, a genealogical book on the families Landau, Margolioth, etc. R. Zevi Hirsch Chajes of Zolkiew was among his pupils” (Alfassi in EJ, 2007) .
