Title translates as “The Geonic commentaries on rules of the Tohoroth: a critical introduction to the commentaries ascribed to R Hai Gaon. ” Jacob Nahum Epstein was born in Lithuania in 1878 into an old rabbinical family, obtained a doctorate in Semitic Philology at Vienna in 1913, and taught in Berlin until 1925, when he left for Jerusalem as part of the first staff at the Hebrew University, and was a professor of Talmudic studies there until his death in 1952. Hai ben Sherira (or Hai b. Sherira (Gaon) , Hebrew: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ; better known as Hai Gaon, Hebrew: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ) , was a medieval Jewish theologian, rabbi and scholar who served as Gaon of the Talmudic academy of Pumbedita during the early 11th century. He was born in 939 and died on March 28, 1038. “Hai b. Sherira's philological abilities were directed to the expounding of the Mishnah; of this work only the portion on Seder ? Ohorot is extant; it was published by T. Rosenberg in "? Obe? Ma'aseh" (Berlin, 1856) . This commentary contains especially interesting linguistic notes, Arabic and Aramaic being often adduced for comparison. The author quotes the Mishnah, the two Talmuds, the Tosefta, the Sifra, Targums On? Elos and Jonathan, the Septuagint, the works of Saadia, the "Sifre Refu'ah, " and other anonymous sources. He also quotes his own commentary on Zera'im. (p. 34) and on Baba Batra (p. 43) . Epstein (1841-1918) was a “rabbinic scholar and historian. Epstein was born in Staro-Konstantinov, Russia, to a wealthy family. Epstein leased some land near Kozmin in 1865 and worked it himself for many years, trying to persuade some of the local Jewish poor to do the same. During that period he developed an interest in natural sciences and built a laboratory, where he carried out various experiments. After his father’s death Epstein left his farm and took over the family business. In 1861 he traveled to Western Europe, where he met some of the leading figures in Jewish scholarship who greatly stimulated his interest in Jewish studies. Gradually, he liquidated his shares in the family business and devoted himself to research. In 1876 he settled in Vienna, where he pursued his studies and contributed articles to learned Hebrew periodicals. Among Epstein's Midrash and Targum studies are Kadmut ha-Tan? Uma, on the antiquity and origin of Midrash Tan? Uma; and a critical edition of Eldad ha-Dani with a comprehensive introduction, notes, and appendices, including a note on Beta Israel and their customs. On the Franco-German school he wrote “Der Gerschom Meor-ha-Golah zugeschriebene Talmud-Kommentar”, an article which aroused much interest and revolutionized the study of pre-Rashi Talmud commentaries; Schemaja, der Schueler und Sekretaer Raschis; a critical edition of Ma’asei ha-Ge’onim, a collection of responsa of the Franco-German school; and Das talmudische Lexikon Jechuse Tannaim we-Amoraim und Jehuda b. Kalonimos aus Speier. Epstein’s historical studies on the same period include Juedische Altertuemer in Worms und Speyer and Mishpahat Lurie. In the controversy between Rapoport and I. Weiss, Epstein defended the former in Divrei Bikkoret. Epstein’s works manifest his vast knowledge and painstaking research: he combined the best of Eastern scholarship with Western method and is recognized as an outstanding scholar in his fields. A collection of some of his writings appeared under the title Mi-Kadmoniyyot ha-Yehudim, of which the second volume of Kitvei R. Avraham Epstein, edited by A. M. Habermann, is an enlarged version. An autobiographical sketch was published in N. Sokolow, Sefer Zikkaron le-Sifrei Yisrael, and is reproduced in Kitvei R. Avraham Epstein. First edition. “Robert Ericksen here presents his interpretation of the work and thought of three of Germany's great Protestant theological thinkers who supported Adolf Hitler. It is a most revealing study. He attempts throughout the work to understand how these three could have lent support to Hitler. He reviews the social setting of the Weimar Republic, deals with what he calls the crisis of modernity, and offers an interpretation of Protestant theological developments prior to and during Hitler's rise. Then he proceeds to study the three in turn. … Gerhard Kittel, perhaps the best known of the three because of his editorship of the massive Theologisches Wörterbuch zum Neuen Testament, now available in English translation, knew ancient Judaism very well and spent much of his life polemicizing against Jewish thought and in support of a Christianity freed of Jewish elements. He always claimed not to be anti-Semitic, but simply to be doing scholarly work that revealed the sharp contrasts between Judaism and Christianity. Many scholars in Germany have also drawn the contrast too sharply, but Kittel cannot be freed of the charge of having found support in his scholarship for his Nazi position with regard to the Jews. Emmanuel Hirsch, immensely learned in Protestant theology and a thoroughgoing apologist for Nazism, accomplished feats of scholarly work, especially in the history of Protestant thought. It is easy enough to spot the points where his Nazi views appear, but much of his work continues to be of great value. Paul Althaus is perhaps the most tragic of the three figures. Long associated with the Erlangen approach to theology and a great interpreter of Martin Luther, his constructive theological work aimed at showing how important the community was for an understanding of Christianity, and how central this notion of peoplehood had been for ancient Israel and was for the early Christian community-points well recognized and underscored today. But he was able to wring from this understanding a contemporary viewpoint in support of Hitler's call for peoplehood, racial purity, and land. A fine and discerning theological emphasis was perverted into a position that accommodated the Hitler movement. After the late 1930s, it appears, Althaus wrote nothing further that could easily be used for political-propagandistic purposes by the Nazis. One reads such a study with a sense of deep sadness as well as with frequent outbursts of anger. One need not share the view of the author that any one of the three theologians under review actually made Nazism intellectually respectable. One can hardly escape the author's conclusion, however: we all have much to learn from a careful review of the life and work of the three, for such aberrations, alongside Nazism's unspeakable accompanying deeds, could occur again. ” (Theology Today, Volume 43, April 1986, book review by Walter Harrelson of Vanderbilt Divinity School) . Title translates as, “Ernst Toller: The Tragedy of a Searching Spirit.” Lieberman was a Yiddish essayist and literary critic who wrote for the daily Yiddishes Tageblatt. As a Labor Zionist, he was active in the founding of the Jewish National Worker's Alliance (Farband) and Yiddish secular schools. In the 1930s Lieberman became an orthodox Jew and joined the religious Zionist movement. In his later writings he attacked left-wing Yiddish writers. His book “The Christianity of Shalom Asch”, is an attack against Shalom Asch's christological novels (YIVO). Toller (1893-1939) was “a German left-wing playwright, best known for his Expressionist plays. He served in 1919 for six days as President of the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic, and was imprisoned for five years for his actions. He wrote several plays and poetry during that period, which gained him international renown. They were performed in London and New York as well as Berlin. In 2000, several of his plays were published in an English translation. In 1933 Toller was exiled from Germany after the Nazis came to power. He did a lecture tour in 1936-1937 in the United States and Canada, settling in California for a while before going to New York. He joined other exiles there. Struggling financially and depressed at learning his brother and sister had been sent to a concentration camp in Germany, he committed suicide in May 1939 (Wikipedia). Born in Koniuszek near Przemysl, Erter, during the earlier part of his life, lived in various places including Lvov, where he, together with a group of young maskilim, was excommunicated in 1816 by Rabbi Jacob Ornstein; Budapest, where he studied medicine; and Brody, then an important commercial and cultural center for Galician Jewry, where he settled in 1831 and remained for the rest of his life. In addition to his literary work, Erter was also active communally among Haskalah circles, showing special interest in the plans for a reform of contemporary Jewish society. Toward the end of his life, he collaborated with his friend Y. H. Schorr in the early stages of the founding of He-Halutz, a Hebrew periodical dedicated to the study of Judaica in the spirit of religious reform, and distinguished by a boldly critical treatment of problems relating to Jewish tradition. Erter's only book, Ha-Zofeh le-Veit Yisrael, consists of five satires, all of which had been published separately with the addition of some personal correspondence relevant to his literary career. Noteworthy among the satires are the following: Hasidut ve-Hokhmah, Tashlikh, and Gilgul Nefesh. Written in the form of epistles, several of the satires seem to have been modeled on the work of Lucian, the second-century Greek satirist, whose writings were very popular in European Rationalist literature and which Erter came to know in Wieland's German translation. Lucian's satiric and ironic treatment of Greek mythology and of ignorant and boorish antiquity during its decline was adapted by Erter in his fight against the traditionalist Jewish society of his day. The recurring character – a type of "persona satirae" – "the watchman of the House of Israel, " has its source in the prophet-castigator of Ezekiel 3: 17; by virtue of the authority of the biblical figure, Erter's watchman reviews the reality of Jewish society in Galicia and Poland in the first half of the 19th century. In this narrative, written in an autobiographical manner, the "observer" gathers evidence and confronts the reader with confessions of figures belonging to an imaginary, fanciful world, confessions made in a dream state or after death. Having endowed them with a keen rhetoric ability, Erter enables these figures to explain their character and experience by ironic exaggeration, coupled with the idealistic pathos characteristic of the Haskalah movement” (Werses in EJ, 2007) . Other Titles: Kereti u-feleti. Eybeschuetz (1690/95-1764) was a “talmudist and kabbalist. Eybeschuetz, a child prodigy, studied in Poland, Moravia, and Prague. In his youth, after the death of his father, he studied in Prossnitz under Meir Eisenstadt and Eliezer ha-Levi Ettinger, his uncle, and in Vienna under Samson Wertheimer. He married the daughter of Isaac Spira, the av bet din of Bunzlau. After traveling for some time he settled in Prague in 1715, and in time became head of the yeshivah and a famous preacher. When he was in Prague he had many contacts with priests and the intelligentsia, debating religious topics and matters of faith with them. He became friendly with Cardinal Hassebauer and also discussed religious questions with him. Through the help of the cardinal, Eybeschuetz received permission to print the Talmud with the omission of all passages contradicting the principles of Christianity. Aroused to anger by this, David Oppenheim and the rabbis of Frankfurt had the license to print revoked. The people of Prague held Eybeschuetz in high esteem and he was considered second only to David Oppenheim. In 1725 he was among the Prague rabbis who excommunicated the Shabbatean sect. After the death of David Oppenheim, he was appointed dayyan of Prague. Elected rabbi of Metz in 1741, he subsequently became rabbi of the “Three Communities, ” Altona, Hamburg, and Wandsbek. Both in Metz and in Altona he had many disciples and was considered a great preacher…Eybeschuetz was considered not only one of the greatest preachers of his time but also one of the giants of the Talmud, acclaimed for his acumen and particularly incisive intellect. Thirty of his works in the field of halakhah have been published. His method of teaching aroused great enthusiasm among the pilpulists, and his works, Urim ve-Tummim on ? Oshen Mishpat, Kereti u-Feleti on Yoreh De’ah, and Benei Ahuvah on Maimonides, were considered masterpieces of pilpulistic literature. To the present day they are regarded as classics by students of the Talmud. They are unique in that the many pilpulim they include are in most cases based on clear, logical principles that give them their permanent value. His homiletic works, Ya’arot Devash, Tiferet Yonatan, and Ahavat Yonatan, also found many admirers. In succeeding generations his reputation was sustained by these works. Since his works were not printed in his lifetime, it is clear that his great influence among his contemporaries must have derived from the power of his oral teaching and from his personality, both of which were highly praised by many writers. In his youth, after the death of his father, he studied in Prossnitz under Rabbi Meir Eisenstadt and Rabbi Eliezer ha-Levi Ettinger, his uncle, and in Vienna under Rabbi Samson Wertheimer. He married the daughter of Rabbi Isaac Spira, the av bet din of Bunzlau. After traveling for some time he settled in Prague in 1715, and in time became head of the yeshivah and a famous preacher. After the death of Rabbi David Oppenheim (1736), he was appointed dayan of Prague. Elected rabbi of Metz in 1741, he subsequently became rabbi of the "Three Communities," Altona, Hamburg, and Wandsbek in 1750. Both in Metz and in Altona he had many disciples and was considered a great preacher. His position in the Three Communities, however, was undermined when a dispute broke out concerning his suspected leanings toward Shabbateanism. This controversy accompanied Rabbi Eybeschuetz throughout his life, and the quarrel had repercussions in every community from Holland to Poland. His main opponent was Rabbi Jacob Emden, also a famous talmudist and a potential rival in the candidature to the rabbinate of the Three Communities. The quarrel developed into a great public dispute which divided the rabbis of the day. While most of the German rabbis opposed Rabbi Eybeschuetz, his support came from the rabbis of Poland and Moravia. A fruitless attempt at mediation was made by Rabbi Ezekiel Landau, rabbi of Prague. Most of Rabbi Eybeschuetz' own community was loyal to him and confidently accepted his refutation of the charges made by his opponent, but dissension reached such a pitch that both sides appealed to the authorities in Hamburg and the government of Denmark for a judicial ruling. The king favored Rabbi Eybeschuetz and ordered new elections, which resulted in his reappointment. After his reelection as rabbi of the Three Communities, some rabbis of Frankfort, Amsterdam, and Metz challenged him to appear before them to reply to the suspicions raised against him. Rabbi Eybeschuetz refused, and when the matter was brought before the Council of the Four Lands in 1753, the council issued a ruling in his favor. In 1760 the debate was rekindled when some Shabbatean elements were discovered among the students of Rabbi Eybeschuetz' yeshiva.
