DER YUNYON ARBAYTER. VOL I, NRS 1-52, DEC 4 1925 -DEC 6, 1926. [COMPLETE FIRST VOLUME, PROBABLY OF ONLY TWO PUBLISHED] [YUNION UNION]

Imprint: Nyu York [New York]: Anarkhistischer Grupe A.L.G.V.Y [I.L.G.V.Y.], 1925-1926
Edition: First Edition
Binding: paperback

1st Edition. Original paper wrappers bound into period cloth, 4to, 6-16 pages per issue. In Yiddish. Includes some cartoons and other illustrations, including one we noticed by William Gropper. Der Yunion Arbayter (The Union Worker) lasted 2 volumes, running weekly until 1927. The first volume, complete, is here. “A.L.G.V.Y / I.L.G.V.Y.” stands for the Yiddish name for the heavily Yiddish speaking International Ladies Garment Workers Union; this newspaper was published by an Anarchist section within the union. “Yiddish-speaking Jewish anarchists were one of the pillars of the U.S. anarchist movement before World War II. This largely immigrant radical milieu was centered in New York City and opposed capitalism, the state, and organized religion. Yiddish-speaking anarchists built militant unions, anarchist newspapers, and other organizations to further their cause. Many famous anarchists were linked to this movement, including Johann Most, Emma Goldman, Alexander Berkman, and Rudolf Rocker. Yiddish-speaking anarchists played a pivotal role in unions like the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU), while the Yiddish anarchist newspaper the Fraye Arbeter Shtime (The Free Voice of Labor) was the largest and longest-lasting U.S. anarchist publication and formed a significant part of the Yiddish cultural landscape. In the 1930s a second generation of bilingual Jewish anarchists emerged, including Sam and Esther Dolgoff, and Audrey Goodfriend, whose influence is still felt in today’s anarchist movement.Despite the importance of Yiddish anarchism to the histories of both the U.S. Left and the Jewish community, it has been largely forgotten and written out of historical scholarship” (YIVO). Cited in Paul Avrich’s “Anarchist Portraits” (Princeton, 1988) pp 192 & 196. Listed in John Patten’s “Yiddish Anarchist Bibliography - Periodicals” (https://www.katesharpleylibrary.net/w9gk09). SUBJECT(S): Jewish anarchists. OCLC 10218086. OCLC lists 3 holdings worldwide LOC, YIVO, NYU), with NYU holding only this one volume and the Union List of Serials suggesting that the run may have "Ceased with Sept. 26, 1927 issue?" The other 49 issues, printed on quality paper and well protected, remain bright white. All issues clear and very well preserved. Very Good Condition. Fattorini, Emma; Carl Ipsen
HITLER, MUSSOLINI AND THE VATICAN: POPE PIUS XI AND THE SPEECH THAT WAS NEVER MADE

Imprint: Cambridge, UK; Polity Press, 2011
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover

Publishers cloth. 8vo. XVI, 260 pages. 24 cm. First edition. Publishers description: “The Vatican against Nazism and Fascism on the eve of the Second World War. A tired pope watching the crisis unfold and considering what action to take against the new enemies of Christianity. Pius XI died on February 10th, 1939, just after finishing the address he hoped to deliver to the Italian bishops on the tenth anniversary of the Lateran Pact. That text dealt harshly with Nazism and Fascism and was written in solitude. It was a discourse that Mussolini feared and that the pope did not survive to deliver. This moment captures the spirit of Emma Fattorini's book, a work that employs newly available and unpublished documentation from the Vatican Secret Archive to rewrite a fundamental page of 20th history. Pius XI came to view the 1930s as a ‘conflict of civilizations, ' a crisis which could only be resolved by a return to the Christian roots of the West. He was a pope who strongly defended the Jews because, in contrast to other elements in the Catholic hierarchy, he held the theological conviction that Jews and Christians shared a common origin: ‘spiritually we are all Semites. ' So wrote Pius XI in the last years of his life as he contemplated the direction in which the world was headed and came to the conclusion that Nazi and Fascist totalitarianism could be stopped by the Vatican. ” Subjects: Fascism and the Catholic Church - Italy. Church and state - Italy - History - 20th century. National socialism and religion. Faschismus. Widerstand. Pius XI, Pope, 1857-1939. Hitler, Adolf, 1889-1945. Mussolini, Benito, 1883-1945. "Michael von Faulhaber (March 5, 1869 – June 12, 1952) was a Roman Catholic Cardinal who was Archbishop of Munich for 35 years, from 1917 to his death in 1952. Faulhaber was a political opponent of the Nazi government and considered Nazi ideology incompatible with Christianity; but he also rejected the Weimar Republic as rooted in treason and opposed democratic government in general, favoring a Catholic monarchy. Faulhaber spoke out against some Nazi policies, but publicly recognized the Nazi government as legitimate, required Catholic clergy to remain loyal to the Nazi government, and maintained bridges between fascism and the Church. Edition: First Edition

1st editions. Original boards. 8vo. 42, 61, 87, 163, 175, 22 cm. In English. “Over 150 years ago, Jews were among the settlers heeding the proverbial call of the 19th century to "Go West." Following the lure of the Gold Rush, they came to California and helped establish the community that eventually would grow to be San Francisco. Because of the hardships endured during that westward migration, however, these early pioneers were driven to establish a communal fund — eventually called the Eureka Benevolent Society — to help aid the sick and needy, assist in the resettlement of Jewish immigrants, provide widows and children with food and shelter, and pay burial costs when their husbands and fathers succumbed to the hardships of dangerous work and difficult living conditions. With the Society as a starting point, San Francisco's growing Jewish community established a large number of social service agencies and, in 1910, the Federation of Jewish Charities was formed to direct a unified fundraising effort and to distribute the proceeds among programs serving the community. Eventually, the leaders of these agencies decided to centralize fundraising by combining agencies under one roof, and the Jewish Welfare Fund (JWF) was born” (JewishFed.org, 2019).
