Felsenthal, Bernhard
ZUR PROSELYTENFRAGE IM JUDENTHUM

Imprint: Chicago, E. Rubovits, 1878
Edition: First Edition
Binding: paperback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

1st edition, later paper wrappers, 8vo, 48 pages. Singerman 2688. Bernhard Felsenthal, (1822–1908) was a U.S. Reform rabbi. Felsenthal was born in Munchweile, Germany and taught in Jewish schools before settling in the U.S. in 1854. There Felsenthal served a congregation in Madison, Indiana, as officiant and teacher; then in 1858 he moved to Chicago as clerk in a banking house, while also devoting himself to rabbinical and theological study. Deeply influenced by David Einhorn, Felsenthal became one of the first protagonists of Reform Judaism in the Midwest. He was a strong opponent of slavery and refused to accept a pulpit in Mobile, Alabama. He was a founder and secretary of the Chicago Juedisches Reformverein. A statement of Reform views which he published in 1859, Kol Kore ba-Midbar: Ueber Juedische Reform, attracted some attention, and when the Reformverein developed into the Sinai Congregation, he became its first rabbi (1861). He was ordained by Einhorn and Samuel Adler. In 1864 Felsenthal became rabbi of the newly formed Zion Congregation, which he headed until his retirement in 1887. When questions on ritual came to him, he generally took an advanced Reform view. In several instances he dissented from the proposals of Isaac M. Wise. Thus, he strongly opposed the establishment of a rabbinical seminary, believing that conditions in America did not provide a satisfactory foundation. On the other hand, he advocated Jewish day schools. In 1879 he declined a professorship at Hebrew Union College. In later years Felsenthal became concerned with the threat to the Jews in America posed by religious indifference, and feeling that the course taken by Reform was preparing a "beautiful death" for Judaism, became an enthusiastic supporter of the Zionist movement. Felsenthal was a founder of the Jewish Publication Society of America and of the American Jewish Historical Society. For more on Felsenthal, see E. Felsenthal (ed.), Bernhard Felsenthal, Teacher in Israel (1924), includes extracts from his writings and bibliography; Stolz, in: ccary, 18 (1908), 161; idem, in: ajhsp, 17 (1909), 218–22. Universal Jewish Encyclopedia (1941) 4: 273–274. add. bibliography: K. Olitzky, L. Sussman, and M.H. Stern, Reform Judaism in America: A Biographical Dictionary and Sourcebook (1993). OCLC: 6688190. [Ferguson, Robert]
NO PROTESTANT-PLOT, OR, THE PRESENT PRETENDED CONSPIRACY OF PROTESTANTS AGAINST THE KING AND GOVERNMENT DISCOVERED TO BE A CONSPIRACY OF THE PAPISTS AGAINST THE KING AND HIS PROTESTANT-SUBJECTS. [WITH] THE SECOND PART OF NO PROTESTANT PLOT

Imprint: London; Printed For R. Lett, 1681-1682
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

Original Wraps. 8vo. 37; 32 pages. 19 cm. First edition. No Protestant-Plot, or The present pretended conspiracy of Protestants against the King and Government, discovered to be a conspiracy of the Papists against the King and his Protestant-Subjects, for R. Lett, 1681; The Second Part of No Protestant Plot, for R. Smith, 1682. A third part was published, 1682, not included here. The first and second parts have been attributed to the Earl of Shaftesbury, but Ferguson affirmed he wrote all three. Both published anonymously, attributed to Robert Ferguson (1637–1714) , a Scottish presbyterian minister, conspirator and political pamphleteer, known as "the Plotter". Having gained a reputation as a theological controversialist and become a person of importance among the Nonconformists, he attracted the notice of the Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury and the party which favoured the exclusion of the Duke of York from the throne, and he began to write political pamphlets just at the time when the feeling against the Roman Catholics was at its height. In 1680 he wrote 'A Letter to a Person of Honour concerning the 'Black Box, ' in which he supported the claim of the Duke of Monmouth to the crown against that of the Duke of York. He took an active part in the controversy over the Exclusion Bill, and claimed to be the author of the whole of the pamphlet 'No Protestant Plot' (1681) , parts of which are usually ascribed to Shaftesbury. Ferguson was deeply implicated in the Rye House Plot, although he asserted that he had frustrated both this and a subsequent attempt to assassinate the king, and he fled to the Netherlands with Shaftesbury in 1682, returning to England early in 1683. For his share in another plot against Charles II he was declared an outlaw, after which he entered into communication with Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll, Monmouth and other malcontents. Ferguson then took a leading part in organizing the rising of 1685. Subjects: Charles II, King of England, 1630-1685. Catholic Church -- Controversial literature. Government, Resistance to - Great Britain - Early works to 1800. Controversial literature. Great Britain - Politics and government - 1660-1688. Title page of first part loose with some edge chipping. Divided into 37 chapters, (“oratio”s), each with its own heading in large type with decorated initial letter. “Giovanni Battista Ferrari was born into a prosperous Sienese family in 1583 and entered the Jesuit Order in Rome in 1602. His subsequent career included a Professorship of Hebrew and Rhetoric at the Jesuit College in Rome, a position as horticultural advisor to the papal family, and the authorship of a number of important books. He also became a close associate of the scholar Cassiano dal Pozzo who was an advisor to the Barberini family. Through this connection, Ferrari joined an important circle of men of science in Rome, and was appointed to manage the new garden at the Barberini Palace which was unique as a showplace for the newest and rarest plants from the distant regions of Asia, Africa, and America. The cultivation of new specimens led Ferrari to the subject of botanical nomenclature, and he became a leading 17th century source for nomenclatural definition. Ferrari’s first book was a Syriac Lexicon, and he also published a series of Orations—treatises on Rhetoric which emphasized good Latin usage. His last publication was a book on Sienese saints.” (illustratedgarden.org) OCLC: 797749225, OCLC-Worldcat lists only 8 copies of any early editions worldwide, none in North America. [FIRST PRINTED APPEARANCE OF THE STARS AND STRIPES AND EAGLE SHIELD] Paine, Thomas (Robert Treat, jr.) [Not THE Thomas Paine]
AN ORATION, WRITTEN AT THE REQUEST OF THE YOUNG MEN OF BOSTON, AND DELIVERED, JULY 17TH, 1799. IN COMMEMORATION OF THE DISSOLUTION OF THE TREATIES, AND CONSULAR CONVENTION BETWEEN FRANCE AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Imprint: Printed by John Russell, Boston, 1799
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardcover

1st edition (with Errata/Errara), Paper Wrappers, 8vo, 30 pages. Includes an interesting headpiece showing cannons, bunting, American flags and the Seal of the United States atop the first text page, which is the First Printed Appearance of the Stars and Stripes and Eagle Shield. Evans 36030. Sabin 58200. Addressed to the Young Men of Boston one year into the Quasi-War with France. On July 7 1798 Congress dissolved all treaties with France in response to the continuing attacks on American ships by French privateers. Paine here announces that while the "FOURTH OF JULY will be celebrated by our latest posterity as the splendid era of our national glory...the SEVENTH will be venerated as the dignified epoch of our American character.... The one annihilated our colonial submission to a powerful avowed and determined foe; - the other emancipated us from the oppressive friendship of an ambitious malignant treacherous ally". Unlike the more famous Thomas Paine, this Robert Treat Paine [here “Thomas Paine”] was a dedicated Federalist, Anglophile, and Francophobe. He was an American poet and editor and the son of Robert Treat Paine, signer of the Declaration of Independence. An Oration was printed under his given name Thomas Paine. He later changed his name to Robert Treat in 1801 to avoid confusion with the famous revolutionary pamphleteer. (Wikipedia). ESTC notes 2 editions of this essay; the second edition lacks the errata. This is the rarer (and presumably earlier) state of the first edition with the true first edition, with “errara” instead of “errata at the bottom of the final page (The second edition lacks any errata/errara reference). SUBJECCT(S): Early works. Treaties. Livres numériques. United States -- Foreign relations -- France. -- Politics and government. États-Unis -- Relations extérieures -- France. -- Traités. -- Politique et gouvernement. Stains to title page, some foxing, lacks any blank endpapges. Very Good Condition (AC-22-28)

[4], 184, 186, [4], 12 pages. Hebrew and English on facing pages, parallel pagination. Goldman 36; Singerman 630.       The First Complete Machzor (Prayer Book Set for the full year) printed in America, a stunning complete set.       Isaac Leeser (1806-1868) was a central leader of American Jewry in the mid-19th Century, the stalwart defender of Orthodoxy against the rise of the Reform movement. He was the head of the Jewish community of Philadelphia and acted as a cantor, philosopher publisher, and author of many sermons and essays. He was key in the founding Jewish institutions and publications central to the building of Judaism in America, including the original Jewish Publication Society, the Jewish Sunday School movement, and many key translations of Hebrew texts into English.       As such, he was the first Jew to translate the Hebrew Bible into English, publishing The Five Books of Moses in 1845, followed by the full Twenty-Four Books of the Old Testament in 1853. His other major translation is that offered here, the first Machzor (Prayer Book set for the full year) published in America, in 1837-1838.Publication in this case was a complex project. Leeser based his new translation on an earlier London edition, improving upon both the English translation and the original Hebrew, which are presented in facing pages. Once the translation was ready for publication, he ordered new Hebrew types from Europe but could not find printers who were familiar with Hebrew–so he taught two Christian printers Hebrew in order to prepare them for the printing.       In spite of the difficulties involved, all six volumes of the machzor set were published in a total of only 13 months. Leeser marketed his prayer book to audiences in both America and the British Empire and therefore included prayers on behalf of a monarch (British) and a republican government (America). The work also includes a fascinating two-page list of subscribers spanning the Eastern US as well as Jamaica at the end of Vol. VI. The same volume here includes interesting notes in pen from a period Rabbi or service leader.      With an original run of only 500 sets, complete sets of the first edition such as this are very rare. The most recent American auction sale was a set at Christies in 2006 for $60,000.00.SUBJECT(S): Seder -- Liturgy -- Texts. Passover -- Judaism -- Sephardic rite -- Fasts and feasts -- Judaism -- Liturgy -- Texts. Pa^que -- Liturgie -- Textes. Judai¨sme -- Rite sefardi -- Liturgie -- Textes. Fe^tes religieuses -- Seder -- Passover -- OCLC: 18532819.All pages professionally washed before rebinding, the quality paper very clean and bright with beautiful marbled endpapers. Stunning matching blue leather binding with raised bands and gilt tooling in custom slipcase. Very Good+ Condition. Rarely found as a complete set. Gorgeous and important. (KH-1-1).
