Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 324 pages. The author's breakthrough second novel. One of the finest novels of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Kiran Desai's "The Inheritance of Loss". Her singular masterpiece. "Beautiful. Lit by a moral intelligence at once fierce and tender" (Pankaj Mishra). "The best novel I've read about the immigrant life and the ongoing parallel world left behind. It's the best, sweetest, most delightful novel I've read in ages" (Francisco Goldman). "Briskly paced and sumptuously written, the novel ponders questions of nationhood, modernity, and class in ways both moving and revelatory" (The New Yorker Magazine). The novel is dedicated to Anita Desai, a world-renowned and iconic writer ("To my mother with so much love"), who clearly inspired Kiran, the youngest of Desai's four children, to follow in her mother's footsteps. For better or for worse, Kiran Desai's own novel will be difficult to surpass, a very tough act to follow. An absolute "must-have" title for Kiran Desai collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen on the title page by Kiran Desai. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Desmond, Matthew
Evicted: Poverty And Profit In The American City

Imprint: New York City, NY, Crown Press, 2016
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 325 pages. The author's breakthrough book-length account on subject. One of the most important books of our time. Advance Reader's Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the regular trade edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only for the exclusive use of the author and publisher. None of the copies was sold commercially. The Advance Reader's Edition is now rare. Presents, in its earliest-state publication format, Matthew Desmond's "Evicted: Poverty And Profit In The American City". Our very own "How The Other Half Lives". A ground-breaking and indispensable account that is now widely considered a classic. "In this brilliant, heart-breaking book, Matthew Desmond takes us into the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee, to tell the story of eight families on the edge. All are spending almost everything they have on rent, and all have fallen behind. Even in the most desolate areas of American cities, evictions used to be rare. But today, most renting families are spending more than half of their income on housing, and eviction has become ordinary, especially for single mothers. In vivid, intimate prose, Desmond provides a ground-level view of one of the most urgent issues facing America today. As we see families forced into shelters, squalid apartments, or more dangerous neighborhoods, we bear witness to the human cost of America's vast inequality, and to people's determination and intelligence in the face of hardship. Based on years of embedded fieldwork and painstakingly gathered data, this masterful book transforms our understanding of poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving a devastating, uniquely American problem. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible" (Publisher's blurb). Matthew Desmond's own personal story is the driving force behind his book: He himself grew up in a (white) family which struggled with poverty throughout his childhood, and in a way that wasn't all that different from the (black) lives he has meticulously chronicled here as a sociologist and public intellectual. His account resonates because it is autobiographical. It is that very rare thing: A solid work of scholarship that is written in his irrefutable, personal voice. "Eviction is to young black women what incarceration is to young black men" (Matthew Desmond). An absolute "must-have" title for Matthew Desmond collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, placed, and dated in black pen on the title page by the author: "Matthew Desmond NYC 3.5.17". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as copies available online are. Laid-in is a pristine copy of Souvenir Material of the event during which his signature was obtained. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, placed, and dated copy of the Advance Reader's Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: By the time Desmond made a few public appearances to promote his book, it was already a bestseller. Copies available online are subsequent printings. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the MacArthur Genius Grant in 2015 on the basis of this one book. One of the most brilliant American writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER COPY OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). Deutsch, David (Artist/Photographer) & Rickels, Laurence A. (Contributor)
David Deutsch: Paintings/photographs

Imprint: Santa Fe, NM, Twin Palms Publishing, 2004
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 80 pages. Artist Book. One of the most unusually beautiful art and photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 1000 copies. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The Limited Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Jack Woody: Regular-sized volumes format in rectangular shape. The first volume is devoted to the paintings, the second, to the photographs. Hard pictorial boards, as issued. Art and photography by David Deutsch. Essay, "Haunts of Assimilation", by Laurence A. Rickels. The essay is appropriately, also in two parts and appended at the end of each volume. Black cloth slipcase with titles embossed on spine. Printed on glossy stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ's, as issued. Presents David Deutsch's "Paintings/Photographs". The hauntingly powerful imagery of Deutsch as artist and as photographer. The photographs are stark aerial shots of various suburban homes, buildings, and their surrounding environments, taken at night. Deutsch himself likens them to surveillance photographs from a satellite or a hidden camera. The paintings are softly lit renderings of homes, panoramic landscapes, and people in the streets, luminous and shadowy at the same time, complete yet also somehow unfinished. As soon as they gain clarity, the images become elusive again, evidence "that rests not on what we see but on what we forget" (Laurence A. Rickels). Born, raised, and educated in Beverly Hills, David Deutsch was discouraged by his wealthy family to pursue an artistic career. To his credit, he would not talk about what appears to have been a difficult childhood and adolescence. He became a world-class economist and joined the Peace Corps before moving to New York to become an artist. Best-known for his conceptual yet figurative paintings, his lifelong subject is "virtual nothingness", that which "appears vast and endlessly deep, that which is perceived but is not obviously visible". He is an artist with a loyal cult following and is associated with such major figures as Robert Mangold, Keith Sonnier, and Brice Marden. To discover his work is to experience the power of art as revelation all over again. An absolute "must-have" title for David Deutsch collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page of both volumes by David Deutsch. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 45 color, 40 duotone plates. One of the greatest American artist/photographers of our time. A flawless copy. . ISBN 1931885273.

Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited print run as a Leatherbound Edition which sold out upon publication. There is no ISBN. Gilt titles on cover and spine. Gilt paper edges. Letter from The Publisher laid-in. Marbled endpapers. Bound-in satin ribbon marker. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Pete Dexter's "The Paperboy". Widely acknowledged as his masterpiece. "Proves his ability to shift to completely different venues with ease. Set in the fetid swamps of northern Florida, the novel concerns the legal case of Hillary Van Wetter, who has been condemned to death for the murder of the county sheriff. Nineteen-year-old Jack James, son of the local newspaper publisher and delivery boy for the daily editions, narrates the story. Dexter has created vibrant characters who fit snugly in their hot, languid setting" (Gilbert Taylor). The basis of the fine (but underrated) film adaptation, with an all-star cast headed by Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey, John Cusack, and Nicole Kidman. An absolute "must-have" title for Pete Dexter collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue pen on the Front Limitation Page by Pete Dexter. This title is now collectible. Dexter, Pete
Train

Imprint: New York City, NY, Doubleday, 2003
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 280 pages. The author's "race" novel. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Pete Dexter's "Train". Dazzling and riveting. "Miller Packard is a sergeant in the San Diego police department who has little time for hypocrisy or racism. He lives life as a dare, fearless and bemused. He is also a golfer, though not a great one. Over a game with a fat cheater named Pinky, Packard's world collides with the troubled life of Lionel 'Train' Walk, a young African-American caddy at Brookline Country Club. Train is a virtuoso golfer but is doomed to tote old men's clubs in a sport that cannot find a place for a young black athlete. Train also holds a secret, a murder that has never been reported but haunts his every step. In the volatile world of 1950's racial politics, bonds of friendship that cross the color line are doomed, and Packard and Train cruise towards inevitable conflagration. Dexter explores racism with a cold eye in 'Train', rarely politically correct and always unafraid to find pettiness in the lives of liberal whites, beatniks, philanthropists, and powerful African-Americans. Outside of the purity of Train's golf swing, Dexter finds little to celebrate in the troubled times, and every page offers the possibility of new catastrophe. Yet, 'Train' is not a bleak novel, and Packard's detachment lends the book an air of dark comedy" (Patrick O'Kelley). It is important to keep in mind that Dexter set his novel in the 1950's, not in the present Age of Tiger Woods, precisely to make his point. An absolute "must-have" title for Pete Dexter collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Pete Dexter. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. Di Piero, W. S.
Brother Fire: Poems

Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 2004
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 80 pages. The polymath/poet's eighth collection. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents W. S. Di Piero's "Brother Fire". Forty indispensable poems. "A broad range of poems that examines ordinary routines like ironing, mowing a lawn, attending a party as well as symbolic rituals like holiday celebrations on Halloween and The Fourth of July. Di Piero takes a so-called 'language poet' approach while somehow managing to keep a solid footing on tangible subject matter. Strikingly American in how he pushes language, content, and experience through the lens of history, both personal and traditional, he creates unique cityscapes, everyday photographic moments, and contemplative, artistic compositions. Pushes boundaries of thought and expression in ways that may not appeal to more conservative readers but will certainly challenge and engage the willing" (Janet St. John). If poetry is not, first and foremost, about language, then it probably isn't poetry (whereas much prose is not necessarily about writing). Aside from his poetry, Di Piero has translated Euripides and Giacomo Leopardi, among others, published several collections of essays, and a Professor of Literature at Stanford University, a national treasure, in other words. "I / felt delivered, unfinished, / to bright solid scenes / melting through me as I / streamed helpless into them" (W. S. Di Piero). An absolute "must-have" title for W. S. Di Piero collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by W. S. Di Piero. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a late-modern classic. Diamond, Jared
The World Until Yesterday: What Can We Learn From Traditional Societies?

Imprint: New York City, NY, Viking/Penguin Books, 2012
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 500 pages. The author's book-length account on subject. One of the most important cultural events of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Jared Diamond's "The World Until Yesterday". His most probing book thus far on the fate of the earth. The book draws from Diamond's decades of fieldwork in the Pacific Islands as well as evidence from the Inuit (Eskimo), Amazonian Indian, and Kalahari San societies, and as such, is Diamond's first first-hand account. "Most of us take for granted the features of our modern society. From air travel and telecommunications to literacy and obesity. Yet for nearly all of its six million years of existence, human society had none of these things. While the gulf that divides us from our primitive ancestors may seem unbridgeably wide, we can glimpse much of our former lifestyle in those largely traditional societies still or recently in existence. Societies like those of the New Guinea Highlanders remind us that it was only yesterday, in evolutionary time, when everything changed and that we moderns still possess bodies and social practices often better adapted to traditional than to modern conditions. Their solutions to universal human problems such as child rearing, elder care, dispute resolution, risk, and physical fitness have much to teach us. Essential and delightful" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Jared Diamond collectors. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. All except for Lola, who asks, 'What if you left before you could start remembering? '. As Lola talks to some of her neighbors from the Island to draw from their memories, she learns of bats as big as blankets, a love of music and dancing, coconut water and sweet mangoes. An island where 'even the people are like a rainbow, every shade ever made'. With a place so beautiful, Lola wonders, why did people leave? Mr. Mir tells her of a Monster that fell upon their Island and did as he pleased for 30 years. Though never mentioned by name, the country in question is the Dominican Republic. The Monster is dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. Lola learns from her assignment that 'just because you don't remember a place doesn't mean it's not in you'. Espinosa's vibrant art portrays a thriving community living under the shadow of the George Washington Bridge in Manhattan. As Lola learns more about her Island, the illustrations incorporate a plethora of tropical plants and color, bringing to life both Lola's neighborhood and La Isla. A sensitive and beautiful story of culture, identity, and belonging" (Library Journal). An absolute "must-have" title for Junot Diaz and Leo Espinosa collectors. Presents James Dickey's "Spinning The Crystal Ball: Some Guesses At The Future of American Poetry". His magisterial lecture. Wallace Stegner famously wrote that Dickey's poems leave the reader with "an awed sense of the pure power of words". Better-known as the novelist who delivered "Deliverance" (the basis of the great film adaptation), Dickey was also one of the most important American poets of the 20th century. His greatest poems are typical of his writing in their blending of the physical and spiritual worlds, their memorable images, and the marriage of sound to sense. He explicitly celebrates all these qualities in his lecture. An absolute "must-have" title for James Dickey collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in green ink-pen on the very first page by James Dickey. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. DiCorcia, Philip-Lorca (Artist/Photographer) & Sante, Luc (Contributor)
Philip-lorca Dicorcia: Heads

Imprint: Gottingen, Germany, Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag/Pace Wildenstein, 2001
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 40 pages. Collection of portrait-cum-street photographs. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Philip-Lorca diCorcia and Gerhard Steidl: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with white titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Philip-Lorca diCorcia. Essay by Luc Sante. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Steidl in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. In matching black DJ with white titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition held at Pace Wildenstein Gallery New York from September 6 through October 13, 2001. Presents Philip-Lorca diCorcia's "Heads". His austerely original approach to the portrait, photography's oldest inherited genre (from painting), that the artist/photographer has given a fresh and nuanced twist by assimilating elements of street photography, the one genuinely photographic genre. "Setting up shop in New York City, diCorcia took unstaged pictures of passers-by that follow in the street photography tradition of Paul Strand, Walker Evans, Harry Callahan, and Robert Frank. DiCorcia's work helps to re-define the genre, bringing portraiture and street photography into our post-modern world" (Publisher's blurb). In other words (and despite being snapshots), they remain consistent with his elaborately staged photo-tableaux, in which he meticulously plans every element of the image before taking even one shot. These portraits may have been taken unposed and without the anonymous subjects' knowledge, but they still look posed rather than snapshot-spontaneous. In this sense, the collection is a departure from the genre we call street photography, and represents a further refinement of Philip-Lorca diCorcia's rigorous aesthetics. There is a stillness in each of the portraits that fixes one's gaze on the image within the frame, just as all of diCorcia's constructed photographs do. The subjects in the foreground are well-lit while the details in the background are blurred or darkened, capturing the essential "alone-ness" and "private-ness" that characterize the artist/photographer's artistic universe while hinting at the ineffable, the mysterious, and the sublime at the same time. "Photography is a foreign language everyone thinks he speaks" (Philip-Lorca diCorcia). An absolute "must-have" title for Philip-Lorca diCorcia collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. "The disparate photographs assembled here were made over the course of twenty years. None of them were originally intended to be used in this book. By ordering and shaping them, I tried to investigate the possibilities of narrative both within a single image and especially in relation to the other photographs: An attempt to discover the possibilities of meaning in the interaction of seemingly unrelated images in the hope that content can constantly mutate according to both the external and internal condition of the viewer but remain meaningful because of its inherent but latent content. The conscious and subconscious decisions made in editing the photographs is the real work of 'A Storybook Life' " (Philip-Lorca DiCorcia). An absolute "must-have" title for Philip-Lorca DiCorcia collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition of 100 numbered and signed copies, indicated/numbered as such on the Back Limitation Page. Didion, Joan
Blue Nights

Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 2011
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 200 pages. The author's second memoir on grief. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly copies that are signed on a bookplate. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Joan Didion's "Blue Nights". Her sequel to "The Year of Magical Thinking" (2005). The latter was her unforgettable account of two tragedies in 2004: Her husband John Gregory Dunne's sudden death (heart attack) and her daughter Quintana's sudden illness (critical but not life-threatening). "Blue Nights" is about Quintana's death on August 26, 2005, two months before "The Year of Magical Thinking" was published. Even though Quintana's death was widely publicised, Didion, in a feat of emotional and literary poise, chose not to re-write the memoir or add an epilogue. Six years later, she finally tells us the story of Quintana's life, illness, and death at the age of 39. "When I began writing these pages, I believed their subject to be children, the ones we have and the ones we wish we had, the ways in which we depend on our children to depend on us, the ways in which neither we nor they can bear to contemplate the death or the illness or even the ageing of the other. As the pages progressed, it occurred to me that their actual subject was this failure to confront the certainties of ageing, illness, death. Only as the pages progressed further did I understand that the two subjects are the same: When we talk about mortality, we are talking about our children" (Joan Didion). In Joan Didion's, and all other mothers', case, she is talking about the child who will not be there to mourn her when she dies. An absolute "must-have" title for Joan Didion collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Joan Didion. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on the bookplate that the publisher released "en masse". This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. It is one of the most beautiful signed copies we have ever seen. Please note: Didion did not tour for the book (as she did for "The Year of Magical Thinking"). Hence the deluge of bookplates. Copies available online have serious flaws, are in multiple subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the National Book Award in 2005 for "The Year of Magical Thinking". One of the most brilliant writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. Diepraam, Willem
Willem Diepraam Vintage Silver-gelatin Print: "lomo De Corvina, Panamerica Sur, Lima, Peru, 1990"

Imprint: Amsterdam, Netherlands, Willem Diepraam Studios, 1990
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare Willem Diepraam collectible piece. Vintage Silver-Gelatin Print of the great Willem Diepraam photograph. Limited Edition of 15 signed, titled, and dated copies. Print size is 11 X 20 inches. It is elegantly and archivally framed in white matte stock paper and mounted on solid dark wood. Full frame size is 29 X 23 inches. The back is mounted in Plexiglas in order to show the signature. It weighs 20 pounds. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Willem Diepraam's "Lomo De Corvina, Panamerica Sur, Lima, Peru, 1990". His iconic photograph of a hapless boy being chased by a pack of wild dogs. The craggy, dotted landscape is streaked with long, undulating gray lines, as if by design, giving the image a powerful, abstract character. It looms over the tiny subjects and appears to envelop them, the Universal and the Particular merging as One. The photograph is named after the place where the incident actually took place, was witnessed, and captured permanently on film by Willem Diepraam (he will not reveal if the dogs caught up with the boy and killed him; we have to think that they did hence the image's menacing power). As one has come to expect of a photographer who is both a moralist and a formalist, the image is an aesthetic triumph as well as a genuine evocation of unmitigated horror. His most celebrated image, it is beautifully reproduced as a doublespread in the monograph, "Willem Diepraam" (2001). Willem Diepraam is a Dutch photojournalist who has published several books in Europe, none of which is available in the United States. Knowledge of his brilliant work is long overdue here. An absolute "must-have" print for Willem Diepraam collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, and it is very boldly and beautifully signed, titled, and dated in black ink-pen on verso (visible through the Plexiglas mounting on the back) by the photographer: "Willem Diepraam LOMO DE CORVINA, PANAMERICA SUR, LIMA, PERU, 1990" . This vintage print is a photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online, is elegantly and archivally framed, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies of the Limited Edition are now in private hands or public collections. This particular print was obtained from Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago, the photographer's American gallery, and comes with Certificate of Provenance from us. As archivally framed and mounted by the gallery, it weighs 20 pounds. A rare signed vintage print thus. 1 original print. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine collectible print. (SEE ALSO OTHER WILLEM DIEPRAAM TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 20 pages. Artist Book. Collection of tipped-in color transparencies. One of the most valuable photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 250 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are many, mainly exhibition catalogs, all of them sourced from this Artist Book. There is no ISBN. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Erika Diettes: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with titles printed on white stock paper that is pasted on the cover, as issued. Photographs by Erika Diettes. Essay by Miguel Gonzalez in both the Spanish original and felicitous English translation. Each original color transparency is hand-tipped into a pristine-white, thick card-stock paper to the highest standards. They must be seen and experienced in all their beauty, power, and sheer innovativeness in their use of the book format. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its Limited Edition collectible format, Erika Diettes' "Rio Abajo/Drifting Away". A luminous sequence of photographs that Diettes originally produced on transparent 60 X 35.5 inch (5 X 2 feet) life-size glass. How many photographs have you seen printed on glass or transparency (which means that they have no "back" side, the images can be viewed on both sides) ? Not very many, if at all. In a stroke of brilliance, Diettes chose glass and transparency because they both evoke River and Water, Colombia's fluids, evocatively and powerfully, and in a way that the regular photographic print cannot. "The rivers of Colombia are the largest graveyards in the world, favored places to dispose of the victims of the country's civil war. Out of this tragedy, Erika Diettes has created a powerful body of work about loss and memory in her photographs of personal articles once owned by The Disappeared. Her work is in the Permanent Collection of The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, among other major venues, and is exhibited alongside that of Christian Boltanski and Gordon Matta-Clark. Erika Diettes holds a Master's Degree in Anthropology and was recently selected as one of the leading 180 thinkers in Latin America" (Charles Guice). Like Boltanski's work, Diettes' imagery resonates precisely because she uses the most basic elements of a human life, in this case, the articles of clothing that were recovered from the bodies of people murdered in Colombia's unending armed conflict. As such, her work is a radical departure from the more elaborate, ritualistic, even fetishistic photography we generically associate with Latin America (she is, after all, an anthropologist/social thinker as well as an artist/photographer, of the first rank in both instances). An absolute "must-have" title for Erika Diettes collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition of 250 numbered and signed copies, blind-stamped and numbered as such on the Back Limitation Page. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Erika Diettes. Each original color transparency is blind-stamped on recto by the artist/photographer. This title is a great Artist Book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: The life-size glass prints have been acquired by museums and private collections for thousands of dollars apiece. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative, on a more intimate scale, of this masterpiece. A rare signed copy thus. 15 original color transparency prints. One of the most brilliant artist/photographers of our time. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ERIKA DIETTES TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Imprint: Bogota, Colombia, Erika Diettes Studios, 2012
Edition: First Edition

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 30 pages. Commemorative Catalog. Collection of extreme close-up, black-and-white portraits of weeping women. One of the most evocative and moving portrait collections of our time, presented as a Souvenir. The images are all culled from Erika Diettes' Artist Book of the same name. There is no ISBN. The Catalog is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Erika Diettes: Regular-sized volume format. Photographs and text by Erika Diettes. This is no ordinary catalog: Each portrait is reproduced on onion-skin, translucent paper (to suggest fragility and pain) to the highest standards. In publisher's original, pristine-white envelope. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in a Commemorative Souvenir format, Erika Diettes' "Sudarios". Heart-rending. "My decision to create this work comes from some questions which have remained from previous photographic series. They are consequences of the same process which began with my Series, 'Silencios' (2004), which deals with survivors of the Second World War who live in Colombia. They are also to be found in 'Rio Abajo' (2008), a Series which deals with the victims of forced disappearance, and 'A Punta de Sangre' (2008), a Series in which I examine the idea of the search for the bodies of The Disappeared by their families who, in the midst of despair, find a ray of hope in the vultures that might lead them to the remains of their loved ones. I have received the testimonies of more than 300 victims of the violence in Colombia. They have confided intimacies of this violence to me: Not only its harrowing details, but the way they rebuild their lives and keep going despite what they have suffered. Many times, with my camera, I have been a witness of the moment when people have to close their eyes as they recall the event which divided their life into two parts. The intention of the 'Sudarios' Series is to enable the spectator to enter into and walk through these impenetrable and apparently alien worlds, when he observes that moment in which these women close their eyes because they find no other way to communicate the true dimension of the horror which they witnessed and the intensity of the sorrow they were subjected to. The women are first-hand witnesses of acts of horror. They were forced to feel on their own flesh or in front of their own eyes that there is no difference between man and the most savage beasts of nature. Or rather, that there is a difference, and it is that we are the only species capable of mass murder and the only ones who do not adapt to our own kind" (Erika Diettes). Presents Rineke Djikstra's "Beach Portraits". First shown at the Photographers Gallery London and published as "Beaches". "Clad in little more than bathing suits, these young people are striking to behold. Remarkably clear and formally classical, each subject is frontally posed and shot straight-on. The resulting photographs participate in a quasi-scientific categorization reminiscent of the work of August Sander and Thomas Ruff. Yet Dijkstra's pictures are not just that. There is also something of the eccentric in them, something that comes closer to Diane Arbus' images. Seen together, the complete Series creates a kind of collective portrait of the existential insecurity and awkward beauty of youth" (Publisher's blurb). One of the leading contemporary photographers, Rineke Dijkstra was born in The Netherlands. She has been the subject of major exhibitions at museums and galleries, including The Museum of Modern Art New York, the Venice Biennale, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Photographers Gallery London. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. As one character says, 'All immigrants are dreamers but they're practical about it. They know what's OK to dream about, and what isn't'. The novel stands alone as an exploration of the contemporary immigrant experience. Anju and Sudha, cousins and best friends since their Calcutta girlhood, find themselves in the Bay Area, Anju with a husband and Sudha with a baby daughter. Each covets what the other has until finally their relationship collapses. Anju finds solace among her fellow Berkeley students, while the beautiful Sudha learns, for the first time, what it's like to pay her own way" (Publishers Weekly). Doctorow, E. L.
All The Time In The World: New And Selected Stories

Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 2011
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 285 pages. Retrospective collection of short stories. One of the most important literary events of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents E. L. Doctorow's "All The Time In The World". His third and final collection of short stories. Includes six pieces that appear in book form for the very first time. "Virtuoso Doctorow is revered for his grandly dimensional novels. But he is also a superlative and transfixing short story writer. The incandescent new stories and forever stunning vintage tales that Doctorow selected for this powerhouse collection portray psychological outliers on the edge of either liberation or an abyss. Doctorow is rightfully treasured for his social acuity and fluency in urban life, but he is also a penetrating observer of Nature and our concealed primal selves. Doctorow's complex and masterful tales of the strangeness, pain, and beauty of life are wise and resplendent" (Publisher's blurb). One brilliant new piece, "Assimilation", captures the illegal immigrant experience as no Federal Government or partisan politics rhetoric, pro and con, ever could. "History is the present. That's why every generation writes it anew. But what most people think of as history is its end product, myth. So to be irreverent to myth, to play with it, let in some light and air, to try to combust it back into history, is to risk being seen as someone who distorts truth" (E. L. Doctorow). E. L. Doctorow died on July 21, 2015 at the age of 84, an irreplaceable loss. An absolute "must-have" title for E. L. Doctorow collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by E. L. Doctorow. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Late in life, E. L. Doctorow seldom did public signings, and when he did, limited the number of books he was willing to sign. As a result, his Limited Editions, while highly collectible, are often more widely available than copies of the First Hardcover Editions, which are signed directly on the title page rather than on a tipped-in leaf. Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 200 pages. The author's twelfth and final novel. One of the most important literary events of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents E. L. Doctorow's "Andrew's Brain". His valedictory novel. "Speaking from an unknown place and to an unknown interlocutor, Andrew is thinking, Andrew is talking, Andrew is telling the story of his life, his loves, and the tragedies that have led him to this place and point in time. And as he confesses, peeling back the layers of his strange story, we are led to question what we know about truth and memory, brain and mind, personality and fate, about one another and ourselves. Written with psychological depth and great lyrical precision, this suspenseful and groundbreaking novel delivers a voice for our times: Funny, probing, skeptical, mischievous, profound" (Publisher's blurb). "The reach of American possibility, in which plain lives take on the cadences of history" (Don DeLillo). "History is the present. That's why every generation writes it anew. But what most people think of as history is its end product, myth. So to be irreverent to myth, to play with it, let in some light and air, to try to combust it back into history, is to risk being seen as someone who distorts truth" (E. L. Doctorow). E. L. Doctorow, E. L.
Billy Bathgate: The Limited Edition

Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 1989
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 323 pages. The author's seventh novel. One of E. L. Doctorow's finest achievements. Limited Slipcased Edition of 300 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the much more common Franklin Mint and the regular trade edition. The Limited Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Random House: Regular-sized volume format. Blue cloth boards with gilt titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Text by E. L. Doctorow. Matching blue hard board slipcase. Protective plastic sleeve. Printed on archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its Random House Limited Edition format, E. L. Doctorow's "Billy Bathgate". The story of Arthur Flegenheimer, the man better-known to the world as Dutch Schultz. "Told from the enamored point-of-view of his eponymous fifteen-year-old protege. E. L. Doctorow explores the relationship between the older "role model" and his impressionable, ambitious, and murderous young thug, adding his own singular twist to the ancient paradigm of Master and Disciple, with fame and fortune side-by-side with danger and death, themes that nearly every major work in the Western canon has touched upon. Doctorow has introduced more formal innovations to the historical novel than any other American novelist of our time. His work has influenced a whole generation of writers, but his limpid style is entirely his own. The basis of the fine and underrated film adaptation by Brian de Palma, with Dustin Hoffmann, Loren Dean (as Billy Bathgate), and a very young Nicole Kidman (as his girlfriend). This copy is one of the Limited Slipcased Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the Front Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by E. L. Doctorow. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few copies of the Limited Slipcased Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Because it is numbered and elegantly produced, this Limited Edition is more collectible than the un-numbered (and gaudy) Franklin Mint edition. Yet, inexplicably, the latter is typically priced more than the former. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the very first National Book Critics Circle Award in 1976 for "Ragtime". Winner of the National Book Award in 1986 for "World's Fair". Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Winner of the PEN/Faulkner, and a second National Book Critics Circle Award in 2006 for "The March". Doctorow, E. L.
City Of God

Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 2000
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 272 pages. The author's ninth novel. One of E. L. Doctorow's greatest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Franklin Mint edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents E. L. Doctorow's "City of God". A mix of alternating voices that touch on such matters as theology, popular music, astronomy, physics, science, war, carnal love, and the verisimilitude of film to life. "Probes the validity of religion in a century that has fostered epic barbarism and bloodshed. Doctorow's language is both lyric and bracing, a mix of elegant, precise wordplay and brash vernacular. In a masterwork of characterization, he depicts a gallery of characters with vivid economy. At once audacious and assured, this profound existential inquiry will surely be ranked as a brilliant mirror of our life and times" (Publishers Weekly). The city in question is New York once more, but this time from the vantage point of the future as opposed to the rich past that Doctorow previously explored in "Ragtime", "World's Fair", The Waterworks", and "Billy Bathgate" (and mined one more time with "Homer & Langley", his eleventh and next-to-last novel). As has been suggested by some critics and admirers, Doctorow has written in "City of God" a more fully realized (and more mature) version of his second, "fantasy"-genre novel, "Big As Life", an early effort that he never allowed to be reissued. As a result, his Limited Editions, while highly collectible, are often more widely available than copies of the First Hardcover Editions, which are signed directly on the title page rather than on a tipped-in leaf. Random House indicated its First Editions with the statement and a number line that began with the Number 2. It did not adopt the Number 1 until recently (around 2004/2005), and even then, on a very inconsistent basis. A scarce signed copy thus. One of the greatest American writers of our time. A fine copy. Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 208 pages. The author's eleventh novel. One of E. L. Doctorow's most original and finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Easton Press edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents E. L. Doctorow's "Homer & Langley". His fourth novel on New York City. The preceding novels in the Series are "Ragtime", "World's Fair", and "The Waterworks". From what is perhaps its most unusual, moving, and intriguing perspective yet: The legendary Collyer Brothers, Homer and Langley, lifelong recluses in their Fifth Avenue mansion, where they accumulate anything and everything from the outside world that they have paradoxically chosen to shut out of their private lives. The accumulation amounts to a history of both New York City and the 20th century. "Brilliantly conceived, gorgeously written, this mesmerizing narrative, a free imaginative rendering of the lives of New York's fabled Collyer Brothers, is a family story with the resonance of myth, an astonishing masterwork unlike any that have come before from this great writer" (Publisher's blurb). "History is the present. That's why every generation writes it anew. But what most people think of as history is its end product, myth. So to be irreverent to myth, to play with it, let in some light and air, to try to combust it back into history, is to risk being seen as someone who distorts truth" (E. L. Doctorow). E. L. Lives Of The Poets: Six Stories And A Novella

Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 1984
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 145 pages. The author's debut collection of short stories. Now considered a late-modern classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents E. L. Doctorow's "Lives of The Poets". A collection of short stories that is unified and rendered intelligible (from a literary standpoint) by the concluding eponymous piece, which is the only novella E. L. Doctorow ever wrote. Doctorow is a singular phenomenon: A master of the historical novel, who has written a series of books on his beloved New York City ("Ragtime", "World's Fair", "The Waterworks", and "Homer & Langley") as well as a restless and agile technical and formal experimenter, who has written such challenging works as "Loon Lake" and this collection, pushing the boundaries of late-modern fiction and exploring the possibilities of his own art. How does he meld the two opposing ambitions? "Highly-regarded and controversial, Doctorow's work is characterized by serious philosophical probings, a subtle and diverse prose style, and placement of historical figures in unusual, sometimes bizarre, situations and settings. His novels stretch the limits of the literary genres on which he draws. 'Lives of the Poets' presents readers with what they have come to expect from him over the years: A literary surprise, in its form, content, and stylistic intention" (Publisher's blurb). One of the short stories became the basis of the full-length novel, "The Waterworks". "History is the present. That's why every generation writes it anew. But what most people think of as history is its end product, myth. So to be irreverent to myth, to play with it, let in some light and air, to try to combust it back into history, is to risk being seen as someone who distorts truth" (E. L. Doctorow). E. L. His most innovative and formalistic work. The novel has puzzled and delighted readers in equal measure. And yet, the story is as American (and as characteristically Doctorow) as it gets: "During the Great Depression of the 1930's, a passionate, young New Jersey man leaves home to find his fortune. What he finds is a life so different from his own that it changes his destiny. A haunting story of dreams and desires" (Publisher's blurb). Doctorow will be remembered for the way he has used the so-called historical novel to serve his own very personal vision of a society in transition, fluid, imperfect, fascinating, and oddly memorable. This is a copy of the First Edition Society, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by E. L. Doctorow. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. As issued, Doctorow did NOT sign copies of this First Edition Society title. His signature on this copy was obtained in person. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Souvenir Announcement of the event during which his signature was obtained. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Edition Society still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the very first National Book Critics Circle Award in 1976 for "Ragtime". Winner of the National Book Award in 1986 for "World's Fair". Winner of the PEN/Faulkner and a second National Book Critics Circle Award in 2006 for "The March". One of the greatest American writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER E. L. Doctorow, E. L.
Sweet Land Stories

Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 2004
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 147 pages. The author's second collection of short stories. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents E. L. Doctorow's "Sweet Land Stories". Possibly his best collection of short stories. Doctorow is at once a supremely entertaining storyteller and a profound writer of conscience, and he forges an extraordinarily potent blend of artistry, compassion, and outrage in his short-story collection, the first since the now-classic "Lives of the Poets" (1984). Here are five perfect and sharp-edged stories about faith, love, and the abuse of power, hair-raising tales featuring intensely compelling characters and impossible situations that unveil key paradoxes intrinsic to American society. The criminal mind fascinates Doctorow, as does the law and its failings, men's cruelty toward women, tragic realities he explores to powerful effect. "History is the present. That's why every generation writes it anew. But what most people think of as history is its end product, myth. So to be irreverent to myth, to play with it, let in some light and air, to try to combust it back into history, is to risk being seen as someone who distorts truth" (E. L. Doctorow). E. L. As a result, his Limited Editions, while highly collectible, are often more widely available than copies of the First Hardcover Editions, which are signed directly on the title page rather than on a tipped-in leaf. Doctorow, E. L.
The March

Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 2005
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 363 pages. The author's tenth novel. One of the greatest novels of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Should not be confused with copies signed on a tipped-in page that the publisher distributed to the trade or the Easton Press edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents E. L. Doctorow's "The March". His late-career masterpiece. The novel has become controversial because of its graphic depiction of violence and cruelty as well as its underlying "message". Its working title was, after all, "Consuming Fire". Many, if not most, Americans think that while the North won the war, the South has won the peace. The inevitable conclusion one draws from Doctorow's fictional account of "Sherman's March" is that the South won the war and rules the peace, uninterrupted, all the way up to the present. Doctorow contends that all "core American values" are Southern values whereas at every point in time since the Civil War, none of the ideas and values from the North has ever implanted itself in American society (beyond the major cities and among the educated and upper classes). Doctorow has also vehemently insisted that he has written a historical novel, not an allegory (which is what critics have called his book). "Gets into the heads of a remarkable variety of characters, famous or ordinary, making this a grim Civil War Canterbury Tales. Upon reaching the novel's last pages, the reader feels wonder if this nation was ever able to heal after so brutal and personal a conflict" (Publishers Weekly). Doctorow is absolutely right: His novel is not an allegory or a cautionary tale. It is the elegy of a great American writer for his beloved country, for hopes and dreams defeated by fear and hatred. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and dated (three days after publication) in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "E. L. Doctorow Oct. 3, 05". It is signed directly on the page itself whereas copies available online are signed on a tipped-in page. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed and post-publication dated copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Doctorow, E. L.
The Waterworks

Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 1994
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 253 pages. The author's eighth novel. E. L. Doctorow's third and highly acclaimed novel about New York City. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents E. L. Doctorow's "The Waterworks". Set in the 1870's, an absorbing narrative and also a brilliant portrait of The City at a crucial moment in its history. Doctorow has been creating a fictional history of New York City through a series of novels, from "Ragtime" to "World's Fair" and now this, perhaps his most accomplished novel on the subject (he published his fourth installment, "Homer & Langley", the most oddly moving novel in the Series thus far, in 2009). His lifelong preoccupation with the history and character of New York City is the literary equivalent of the filmmaker Woody Allen's celebrated love affair with the greatest city of the 20th century. However gritty and even nasty Doctorow's vision of New York (versus Allen's more romantic view of it), there is still a grudging admiration and affection for the city's resilience and sheer power to inspire awe. Doctorow's work has influenced a whole generation of writers, but his limpid style is incomparable and remains entirely his own. L. (Author/Screenwriter) & Levine, Paul (Editor/Contributor)
Three Screenplays: Daniel, Ragtime, Loon Lake

Imprint: Baltimore, MD, The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2003
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 464 pages. Collection of screenplays. One of E. L. Doctorow's finest and most underrated achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only by a University Press. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents E. L. Doctorow's "Three Screenplays: Daniel, Ragtime, Loon Lake". Doctorow's achievement as a playwright and screenwriter, finally recognized. "Adapting novels for movies is a tricky and often thankless endeavor. Because Doctorow is profoundly intrigued with film's seductiveness, he has performed this task to fine effect. Here are the screenplays for 'Daniel' (produced in 1983 under the direction of Sidney Lumet), 'Ragtime', a magnificent adaptation that perfectly mirrors the panoramic novel, but was never made (a much shorter screenplay was commissioned for the Milos Forman film), and 'Loon Lake', which has yet to be produced. Doctorow's remarks, meticulous commentary by Film and American Literature Professor Paul Levine, and Interviews with Doctorow and Lumet coalesce to form a provocative inquiry into the process of artistic alchemy that attempts the nearly impossible: The translation of fiction into film" (Booklist). "History is the present. That's why every generation writes it anew. But what most people think of as history is its end product, myth. So to be irreverent to myth, to play with it, let in some light and air, to try to combust it back into history, is to risk being seen as someone who distorts truth" (E. L. Doctorow). E. L. Dorfman, Ariel (Translated by George Shivers)
Some Write To The Future: Essays On Contemporary Latin-american Fiction

Imprint: Durham, NC, Duke University Press, 1991
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 255 pages. Landmark collection of essays. One of the finest books on its subject ever written. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only by a University Press. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Ariel Dorfman's "Some Write To The Future" in a felicitous English translation. A brilliant and indispensable collection. Incisive, insightful, and highly provocative essays on some of the greatest Latin-American writers. Among them: Jorge Luis Borges, Alejo Carpentier, Miguel Angel Asturias, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, to whom the erudite Ariel Dorfman devotes a chapter apiece. One of Chile's finest living writers, Ariel Dorfman has lived in exile in the United States since the bloody collapse of the Allende Government in a US-sponsored coup whose principal architect, Augusto Pinochet, has since died in disgrace. As his title implies, the ultimate greatness of Latin-American literature is that its greatest writers were writing with posterity, that is to say with literature in mind, rather than just the bottom line or immediate popular success. A great English novelist has memorably described the work of Ariel Dorfman as that of a writer "capable of seeing God in the vertigo of experience" (John Berger). An absolute "must-have" title for Ariel Dorfman collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. Still Lovers

Imprint: New York City, NY, Channel Photographics, 2005
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 128 pages. Collection of color photographs on life-size sex dolls and their partners. Now considered a contemporary photography classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Laura Lindgren: Oversize-volume format. Glossy pictorial boards with white titles on spine, as issued. Photographs by Elena Dorfman. Essay by Elizabeth Alexandre. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Elena Dorfman's "Still Lovers". The real-life men and their Real Doll sex surrogates. "The dolls are sculptural beauties, sex kittens, companions, and family members. These photographs are as riveting and culture-shifting as those of Diane Arbus" (Publisher's blurb). The mannequin-as-sex-object is not a recent phenomenon. Pierre Molinier, a truly great artist, made it the most desirable plastic object of the 20th century. Unbenownst to Matt McMullen, Real Doll's immensely successful inventor, the great critic/novelist Susan Sontag eerily anticipated and described in "The Dummy" (it appears in "I, Etcetera", her only collection of stories) the life of an engineering wizard and the Real Doll he has created for himself and with whom he falls in love, an allegorical tale about the doll as perhaps the ideal partner, companion, friend, and lover for every man, the perfect substitute for the exasperatingly complex Real-Life Woman. "Still Lovers" was taken over a period of many years, as Real Doll evolved and became fantastically real, a development period that the Real Doll male benefitted from. The Real Doll male (called "Charlie"), flaccid and erect on command, was created in 2001. The Real Doll phenomenon has finally gone mainstream via a major Hollywood film in 2007, "Lars And The Real Girl", with Ryan Gosling and "Bianca". An absolute "must-have" title for Elena Dorfman collectors. Dorris, Michael
Cloud Chamber

Imprint: New York City, NY, Scribner, 1997
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 316 pages. The author's final novel. Advance Reader's Edition of the First Hardcover Edition. "Special Signed Copy: Not For Sale" label indicated on the DJ's rear panel. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited one-time-only print run as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Michael Dorris' "Cloud Chamber". His most deeply felt novel. Until his tragic death, Michael Dorris, a member of the Modoc Tribe, was one of the most celebrated Native-American writers of the late-20th century. He was married to Louise Erdrich, herself a Native-American from another tribe, and they openly spoke of being co-authors of each other's books. All of their published books up until Dorris' sensational suicide were dedicated to each other. The cause of his suicide is well-known, and what he allegedly committed before it inexcusable, making an objective and fair appraisal of his large body of work, which nevertheless has moments of great beauty and crystalline prose, difficult at best and (perhaps) impossible at worst. An absolute "must-have" title for Michael Dorris collectors. This copy of the Advance Reader's Edition is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the front free endpaper by Michael Dorris. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page even though it comes from the publisher. This title is now collectible. This is one of few such signed copies of the Advance Reader's Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant American writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MICHAEL DORRIS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Dostoyevsky, Fyodor (Author) & Arad, Ron (Architect/designer)
The Idiot: The Penguin Books 60th Anniversary Artist Book

Imprint: London, England, Penguin/Penguin Designer Classics, 2006
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 704 pages. Artist Book. One of the most beautiful Artist Book interpretations of the classic ever created. Limited Edition of one numbered and signed copy. Should not be confused with the Limited Edition of 1000 copies. The Limited Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Ron Arad: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 4 pounds. Text by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Art by Ron Arad. White cardboard box. Printed on archival acid-free stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. In transparent Plexiglas ("Perspex") box, which serves as the book's DJ, as issued. Rather than just an outer slipcase, it is completely integral to the book. Published on the occasion of Penguin Book's 60th Anniversary, "The Idiot" is one of five classics that the publisher issued in a Limited Edition by commissioning five of the world's most important artists in their respective fields. The other titles are Gustave Flaubert's "Madame Bovary", D. H. Lawrence's "Lady Chatterley's Lover", F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Tender Is The Night: A Romance", and Fyodor Dostoyevsky's "Crime And Punishment" (he is the only novelist to be honored with two masterpieces in the Series). Penguin held a global auction of the "Number 1" signed copy of each title on the day of its 60th Anniversary in 2006. Re-presents Fyodor Dostoyevsky's "The Idiot". Ron Arad's Artist Book rendition: The ultimate book-as-object, the literary classic as work of art, worthy of Penguin's auspicious celebration and of posterity. "Arad's book has no cover so the reader will pick it up and read the author's first words. It is stripped back to show the glue and thread in the spine which is visible through an acrylic slipcase with a fresnel lens so the text appears to move as the lid is removed" (Publisher's blurb). "By not wanting to have a cover, it ended with the book becoming an amazing object that is alive, but which maintains its transparency. It becomes a glorious box with a book inside, almost like a monument" (Ron Arad). Said like a true architect who has worked for the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou Paris, the Vitra Design Museum Germany, and the Victoria & Albert Museum London. An absolute "must-have" title for Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Ron Arad collectors. This copy of the Limited Edition is Number 1, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the first page by Ron Arad. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great book. This is the only such signed copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: By special arrangement with Penguin, Ron Arad signed only the first copy of the Limited Edition. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest novels of all time, re-interpreted by one of the most brilliant architect/designers of our time. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 0713999659.

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 150 pages. Retrospective collection of black-and-white photographs. Jonas Dovydenas' finest achievement. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Photographs by Jonas Dovydenas. Essay by Gail Buckland. Printed in tritone on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Meriden-Stinehour Press in the United States to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Their clarity, warmth, and tonal range represent American publishing at its very best. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Jonas Dovydenas' "Nevada, A Journey". The Lithuanian-American photographer's serenely beautiful and often magnificent landscape images and portraits of so-called "Ordinary Americans". They evoke nothing less than the essential, "trail-blazer" aspect of the national character. What do we think of today when we say "Nevada"? Las Vegas. And yet, much of the state remains the "American Cowboy" West amid the harsh desert. As the title says, one must be willing and want to make this journey regardless of where one comes from originally (Dovydenas himself fled Lithuania with his family just before the Soviet occupation, and has journeyed throughout the United States ever since). He is unapologetically nostalgic and celebratory about What We Have Lost. He captures for posterity, in these stark landscapes and stoic faces, the physical manifestation of what is, or was, not just pioneering but noble and heroic about America. These hymnal photographs of men and women, boys and girls (even babies), in solo and group portraits, comprise a forgotten America, and are authentic, eloquent, and moving. A major body of work, worthy to stand alongside Richard Avedon's "In The American West" (1985). An absolute "must-have" title for Jonas Dovydenas collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the half-title page by Jonas Dovydenas. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a late-modern American photography classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws yet are priced as though they had collectible value. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative.
