Editors of Nazraeli Press & Moriyama, Daido
One Picture Book: Self

Imprint: Tucson, AZ, Nazraeli Press, 2015
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 16 pages. Artist Book. The 90th title in the now-legendary "One Picture Book" Series by Nazraeli Press, one of the most superb ongoing projects of contemporary art photography. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the photographers (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Daido Moriyama. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Daido Moriyama's "Self". A static yet compelling series of black-and-white self-portraits ("selfies", if you will). Moriyama presents himself, provocatively, "in drag", wearing what appears to be a black wig, a blouse, and lipstick. Moriyama is, in effect, saying that self-portraits reveal only because they conceal. In this self-portrait sequence, Moriyama himself deliberately hides behind the mask called "make-up". As such, his self-portraits "comment" on the fact that every photographic self-portrait is artificial (rather than real) because it shows the subject in the best possible light, or in the light that the controlling subject would like to be seen. This is his second contribution to the One Picture Book Series, and his participation is a major coup. Every Moriyama book is an event, and "Self" is brilliant and exemplary. An absolute "must-have" title for Daido Moriyama collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. It comes with a large-size original print (of his reversed self-portrait) that is very boldly and beautifully signed in gold pen-marker on recto by Daido Moriyama. It's a truly brilliant Moriyama touch: He has made his signature an integral part of his self-portrait, in a way that most signatures are not (or meant to be). This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: The remaining copies from the publisher command $150. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. 20 plates, 1 original print. Five of Daido Moriyama's books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". The greatest Japanese photographer of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ONE PICTURE BOOK AND DAIDO MORIYAMA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1590054261.

The 63rd title in the now-legendary "One Picture Book" Series by Nazraeli Press, one of the most superb ongoing projects of contemporary art photography. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the artist/photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Alec Soth. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Alec Soth's "One Mississippi". His very first contribution to the One Picture Book Series. "In March of 1992, Rachel and I made a road trip down the Mississippi River. Along with our German Shepherd, Tasha, we travelled from our home in Minnesota to Memphis, Tennessee'. The twelve images that follow - eleven reproductions and one original photograph - are all previously unpublished. They convey wonderfully both the innocence and excitement of what was to become an epic journey" (Publisher's blurb). "One Mississippi" is the sequel, if you will, to that epic journey, which resulted in Soth's masterpiece, "Sleeping By The Mississippi" (1999). An absolute "must-have" title for Alec Soth collectors. This is an Artist Proof and is indicated as such ("A/P") in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. It comes with an original color print that is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on verso by Alec Soth. This title is a great art photography book. As a regular trade edition (that has since been reissued in multiple subsequent editions), "Sleeping By The Mississippi" did not come with a print. This one does, and it's a beauty. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Artist Proof available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online command more than $800, which is where this title's value is headed. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 11 color plates, 1 original color print. Alec Soth's "Sleeping By The Mississippi" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 16 pages. Artist Book. The 64th title in the now-legendary "One Picture Book" Series by Nazraeli Press, one of the most superb ongoing projects of contemporary art photography. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the artist/photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Mark Steinmetz. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Mark Steinmetz's "Italia Cronaca di Un Amore". His very first contribution to the One Picture Book Series. A true romance despite our post-modern photographic world of satire and irony. "Mark Steinmetz, whose recently-completed trilogy of books, 'South Central', 'South East', and 'Greater Atlanta', is the subject of wide critical acclaim, brings 'Italia: Cronaca di Un Amore'. This is an unending story, conveyed here in 15 photographs" (Publisher's blurb). Steinmetz's lovely photographs of Italian women, romantic couples, and a family on holiday, shot against the scenic beauty of the country, have a cinematic quality that recalls the work of Italy's legendary film masters: Vittorio de Sica as well as Roberto Rossellini, Michelangelo Antonioni (who did make a film called "Cronaca di Un Amore") as well as Federico Fellini, Pier Paolo Pasolini as well as Bernardo Bertolucci. Steinmetz is paying tribute in each photograph to three great loves simultaneously: For Italy, her people (especially her women), and her great artistic tradition. An absolute "must-have" title for Mark Steinmetz collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. It comes with a stunningly beautiful original color print that is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on verso by Mark Steinmetz. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 16 pages. Artist Book. The 94th title in the now-legendary "One Picture Book" Series by Nazraeli Press, one of the most superb ongoing projects of contemporary art photography. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the artist/photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Elaine Ling. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Elaine Ling's "Habitacion Cubana". Her first, and posthumous, contribution to the One Picture Book Series. "Elaine Ling was an exuberant adventurer, traveller, and photographer who felt most at home backpacking her view camera across the great deserts of the world and sleeping under the stars. Born in Hong Kong, she grew up in Canada and studied the piano, cello, and medicine. She received her medical degree from the University of Toronto, and practiced medicine among various First Nations peoples in Canada's North and Pacific Northwest as well as on the other side of the world, in Abu Dhabi and Nepal. Elaine Ling passed away in August of this year after a long illness. This vibrant and colorful book comprises seven pairs of photographs made in Cuba, on two separate trips: The first in 2002, and the second in 2015. In each of the pairs, Ling presents a chosen subject in black-and-white, and again, thirteen years later, in color. The double layers of time and color create diptychs that can be contemplated endlessly, always with new discoveries to be made. Elaine Ling's photographs have been widely exhibited and published, and are included in the Permanent Collection of museums around the world, including those of the Bibliotheque Nationale Paris; Musee de la Photographie Charleroi, Belgium; Fotografie Forum International Frankfurt; Museet for Fotokunst Odense, Denmark; Centro Portugues de Fotografia Porto, Portugal; Scavi Scaligeri International Centre of Photography Verona, Italy; Fototeca de Cuba Havana; Lishui Museum of Photography; Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Texas; and the Brooklyn Museum New York" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Elaine Ling collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. It comes with a large-size, original color print that is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on verso by Elaine Ling. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. One Picture Book: Bijou

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 16 pages. Artist Book. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the artist/photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Ave Pildas. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Ave Pildas' "Bijou". His first and only contribution to the One Picture Book Series, a nostalgic valentine to the movies. "When I arrived in Hollywood in 1971, I was smitten by the sunshine and the Art Deco cityscape. Prominent on her streets were the lavish movie palaces, first appearing in the 1920's, that were emblematic of the immense popularity of the movies and the importance of the movie industry to the economy of Southern California. The architects of the early movie theaters believed that the movie-going experience began on the sidewalk in front of the building where the movies were viewed. The box offices were the tiny, stand-alone structure where tickets were sold. The elaborate little buildings, occupied by one or two ticket sellers, provided a preview to the opulent decoration of the interior, and reflected its style. I referred to these as 'bijou', the French word that translates as 'jewel' " (Ave Pildas). Together with its predecessor, Michael Putnam's "Silent Screens" (2000), "Bijou" pays tender, loving homage to a vanished cultural landmark, the movie theater, in all its glory. An absolute "must-have" title for Ave Pildas collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. It comes with a large-size, original print that is very prominently and beautifully signed in pencil on verso by Ave Pildas. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 16 pages. Artist Book. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the artist/photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photograph by Julien Coulommier. Poem by Freddy De Vree. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Julien Coulommier's "Soleil Cou Coupe". The artist/photographer's first and only contribution to the One Picture Book Series, which culminates the multi-page poem by Freddy De Vree. "The Belgian photographer, author, and critic Julien Coulommier has been an important figure in Western European avant-garde art since the early 1950's. His association with Otto Steinert led Coulommier to be seen as a representative of subjective photography in Belgium and Holland, but his most important stimulus came from the Belgian surrealist Marcel Broodthaers, with whom he became friends. Coulommier started out at a time when abstract art and figurative art were seen very much as separate genres. With great skill and imagination he has melded these opposing styles, presenting the abstract figuratively and the figurative in an abstract way. He has long been concerned with exploring the difference between knowledge about things and images of them. Freddy De Vree has written a memorable and vividly descriptive poem in honor of Coulommier's work and it complements perfectly the original print tipped into the final page of each book" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Julien Coulommier and Freddy De Vree collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. It comes with an original print that is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully numbered and signed in black ink-pen on verso by Julien Coulommier. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Javier Carrillo's "Las Trocas Angelinas, con sus Mercancia". One of the last four concluding titles in the Series. "Javier Carrillo created a suite of 6 'suicide prints', a type of linoleum print considered to be the single most difficult form of multicolor printing, each featuring what is a common sight across this country and many others: A small, well-worn pickup truck filled to the breaking point with tools or merchandise. In Carrillo's prints, the pickup trucks with their humble yet priceless cargo - used wooden pallets, freshly-picked oranges, lawn-mowing equipment - become almost heroic in their stoicism, and one can't help but draw a comparison between them and the burros that they have replaced. The original, signed photograph included with each copy of the book is one of the snapshots Carrillo made as a sketch for his finished studio prints" (Publisher's blurb). "My life, society, and culture have given me much to think about, but I am able to express only a small amount of it with words. I prefer to express myself through my artwork" (Javier Carrillo). An absolute "must-have" title for Javier Carrillo collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Gregori Maiofis. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Gregori Maiofis' "Taste For Russian Ballet". One of the last four concluding titles in the Series. "Gregori Maiofis's influences are multinational and multicultural. Born in St. Petersberg, Russia in 1970, where he immersed himself in traditional academy training, Maiofis then moved to Los Angeles where he participated in the vibrant art scene and learned new art forms. After five years in LA, Maiofis returned to his native St. Petersburg because, he states, 'I can do things here artistically that I couldn't do anywhere else'. One of which, of course, was to create his now-famous series pairing a long-limbed ballerina with a burly circus bear, carefully smuggled into an empty apartment building for the shoot. Seated in a chair, sometimes in profile and at others with his back to the viewer, the bear appears to be giving directions to the ballerina, who beautifully, and very professionally, obeys him. One of the most poignant images: That of the bear lifting his paw in imitation of the ballerina's own gracefully uplifted arm" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Gregori Maiofis collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. The 99th title in the now-legendary "One Picture Book" Series by Nazraeli Press, one of the most superb ongoing projects of contemporary art photography. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the artist/photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Tomoko Sawada. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Tomoko Sawada's "Face". The second-to-the-last, concluding title in the Series, one of the very best in the entire Series. "One of the most recognizable artists of her generation, Tomoko Sawada is a Japanese contemporary photographer and performance artist. Twelve self-portraits, each one showing her made-up as a different ethnicity and cultural background. As playful as it appears to be, Sawada's work has a very serious underlying message" (Publisher's blurb). "All people, despite having different types of so-called 'added values' such as nationality, race, religion, and language, are essentially and naturally equal human beings. This fundamental underlies my photographic work: I aim to point people euphemistically to the fact that humans share 99.99999% of the same genes" (Tomoko Sawada). She makes her point about us being One paradoxically, by embodying some of the most specific ethnicities, among other differentiating cultural referents. First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 16 pages. Artist Book. The 100th title in the now-legendary "One Picture Book" Series by Nazraeli Press, one of the most superb ongoing projects of contemporary art photography. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the artist/photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs from the collection of Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck. Photograph by Tomoko Sawada. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Gloria Katz's, Willard Huyck's, and Tomoko Sawada's "Souvenirs". The very last title in the Series, an ending with a bang. What a wonderful way to wrap up the Series: "A recreation of sixteen hand-tinted Japanese 'Geisha' postcards, originally printed in the early 1900's. Includes an original signed photograph by Tomoko Sawada, a photographer well-known for her chameleon-like self-portraits. In this case, she has transformed herself into a wistful turn-of-the century geisha. Sawada's cameo appearance in this book is also a play on the One Picture Book Series itself, as she authored # 99. Gloria Katz is a screenwriter whose credits include 'American Graffiti' and 'Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom'. She is an avid collector of Japanese photography, an interest that stems from her love of Japanese cinema. She is the co-author (with her husband Willard Huyck) of 'Visions of Japan', a book about her adventures collecting photography" (Publisher's blurb). "Images of famous events such as the Royal Wedding and the Moon Landing are here next to shots by Masters of photography such as Bill Brandt, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Cecil Beaton, and Robert Doisneau. There is fashion, sports, natural history, reportage, and society portraiture as well as social documentary and art. The photographers featured range from William Henry Fox Talbot and Julia Margaret Cameron to Larry Clark and Herb Ritts, from Robert Capa and Josef Koudelka to Nan Goldin and Pierre et Gilles. Arranged alphabetically by photographer, each full-page image is accompanied by an illuminating text which gives a useful insight into the work and its creator as well as extensive cross-references to others working in the same field or style" (Publisher's blurb). "The scope of this visual encyclopedia is truly epic" (Library Journal). Considering how vast and constantly-expanding the subject is, this is an impressive start indeed: Great photographs accompanied by (extremely) insightful commentary. Published almost as an afterthought to Phaidon Press' immensely successful Series that now includes "The Art Book", "The 20th-Century Art Book", and "The Movie Book", the "inclusion of iconic images and their juxtapositions raise questions central to the history of the medium, and make 'The Photo Book' perhaps the most successful of the Series" (Eric Bryant). An absolute "must-have" title for photography book collectors. This title is an indispensable photography book-reference. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing ("First Published 1997" with NO further indications) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Copies available online are subsequent printings or have serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. 500 plates. Some of the greatest photographs and photographers of all time. A fine copy. . ISBN 0714836346.

The Invisible Circus

Imprint: New York City, NY, Doubleday, 1995
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 340 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Jennifer Egan's "The Invisible Circus". The tale of a sensitive 18-year-old retracing her symbolically-named older sister's doomed excursion through Europe. The title refers to a 1960's trendy "Be-In" cult that was all about Watching Oneself Happen. "As a child, Phoebe felt less vital than her sister Faith. Their father, a failed artist, lived vicariously through the aptly-named elder girl. Faith learned to please him by taking extravagant physical risks. After his death, her apparent free-spiritedness masked the same desperate need to impress her peers. But Faith lost faith in 1968 when, on a trip with her boyfriend, she mysteriously fell from a cliff in Italy. Ten years later, Phoebe crosses the Atlantic, her itinerary mapped by Faith's (falsely) optimistic postcards, to learn how and why Faith died. Egan effectively contrasts Phoebe's rigidity with Faith's daring nature. Eventually, she discovers that Faith 'just threw herself away'. Phoebe chooses her own future over Faith's forsaken one" (Publishers Weekly). An absolute "must-have" title for Jennifer Egan collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in blue pen on the title page by Jennifer Egan. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Jennifer Egan's "A Visit From The Goon Squad". Beautifully written, her deservedly award-winning, and finest, novel thus far. "Egan's overarching concerns are about how rebellion ages, influence corrupts, habits turn into addictions, and lifelong friendships fluctuate and turn. Or as one character asks, 'How did I go from being a rock star to being a fat fuck no one cares about? ' Egan answers the question elegantly as this powerful novel chronicles how and why we change even as the song stays the same" (Publisher's blurb). Heroes Of The Frontier

Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 2016
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 390 pages. The author's seventh novel. One of Dave Eggers' finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. "Autographed Copy" round white sticker pasted in front. The First Edition is now scarce. Although the book is published by Knopf, it looks like a McSweeney's production, as Eggers is also a publisher and book designer: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial metallic-silver hard boards with matching metallic-silver titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Text by Dave Eggers. Printed on archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Dave Eggers' "Heroes of The Frontier". Favorably compared to Saul Bellow's "Henderson The Rain King" (1959), his valentine to Alaska, and by extension, all other faraway lands that Americans flee to in order to find solace, themselves, each other, and their very own version of The American Dream. The title alludes to classic American accounts of the Wild West. "The darkly comic story of a mother and her two young children on a journey through an Alaskan wilderness plagued by wildfires and a uniquely American madness" (Publisher's blurb). "A novel about America, about what forces people to leave 'the lower 48' to seek refuge in a forbidding, unpeopled landscape. Eggers renders it with such passion and good humor, and describes the 'land of mountains and light' in stirring, lustrous prose. There is a feeling of utopianism about the novel, a sense that, in Alaska, some original American Dream slumbers just beneath the ice. Acts on the reader like a breath of Alaskan air, cleansing the spirit and lifting the heart" (The Guardian). An absolute "must-have" title for Dave Eggers collectors. This Autographed Copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Dave Eggers. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Souvenir Bookmark of the NYC bookstore where the signing event was held. This title will become a contemporary classic. In matching pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Dave Eggers' "The Circle". An anti-totalitarian allegory-novel, in the Age of Facebook, Google, and fake news. "Most of us imagine totalitarianism as something imposed upon us. But what if we're complicit in our own oppression? That's the scenario in Eggers' ambitious, terrifying, and eerily plausible novel. When Mae gets a job at the Circle, a Bay Area tech company that has cornered the world market on social media and e-commerce, she is elated, and not just because of the platinum health-care package. The gleaming campus is a wonder, and it seems as though there isn't anything the company can't do (and won't try). But she soon learns that participation in social media is mandatory, not voluntary, and that could soon apply to the general population as well: A short step from sharing to surveillance to a world without privacy. Invites comparisons to 'Brave New World' and '1984'. Brilliantly depicts the Internet binges, torrents of information, and endless loops of feedback that increasingly characterize modern life. But perhaps most chilling of all is the notion that our ultimate undoing could be something so petty as our desperate desire for affirmation" (Keir Graff). The Monk Of Mokha

Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A Knopf, 2018
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 330 pages. The author's third novel in his real-life, immigrant series of novels. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. Without DJ, as issued. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Dave Eggers' "The Monk of Mokha". Mokha/Mokhtar/Mocca: Being the rags-to-riches true story of the aptly-named, real-life entrepreneur-hero Mokhtar Alkhanshali, a Yemeni immigrant who re-discovers his homeland's superior coffee and brings it, against all odds, to the United States. Proceeds from the book will go to the Mokha Foundation, established by the subject to help various projects for the Yemeni people. "Following in the path of 'What Is The What' and 'Zeitoun', Eggers delivers us the real-life tale of Mokhtar Alkhanshali, a Muslim in his early twenties who appeared to be on his way to a relatively undistinguished life. But when he discovers the historic Yemeni connection to coffee production, he embarks on a quest that will change his path and provide direction. The adventure itself is riveting, but when you add in the history of coffee, the story becomes even more elevated. Mokhtar is an inspirational character, and Dave Eggers has written an entertaining, inspirational, and informative book" (Chris Schluep). An absolute "must-have" title for Dave Eggers collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (on the day of the book launch) in black pen-marker on the title page by the author and subject: "Mokhtar Alkhanshali Dave Eggers 2/11/18 NYC". The Wild Things: The Fur-covered Edition

Imprint: San Francisco, CA, McSweeney's, 2009
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 288 pages. The author's novel, based upon the children's classic and its film adaptation. The Hardcover "Fur-Covered" First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published simultaneously with the regular trade edition in a small and limited first print run. The brilliant production is by Dave Eggers himself: Regular-sized volume format. Synthetic black fur-covered hard boards with Max's pair of eyes on the cover, as issued. Text by Dave Eggers. It is (loosely) based upon Maurice Sendak's "Where The Wild Things Are" (1962) and (more faithfully) upon the screenplay of Spike Jonze's film adaptation (2009), which was written by Eggers with the director. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In publisher's original shrinkwrap with a wraparound band that is pasted on the plastic, as issued. As such, the latter is integral to the edition: It contains the titles on the cover and the spine, and the publisher's blurb on the back cover. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Dave Eggers' "The Wild Things". His novelization of "Where The Wild Things Are". Lest anyone accuse Eggers of tampering with the beloved children's classic, the idea for the novel was suggested by Maurice Sendak himself (to whom the book is lovingly dedicated). "The Wild Things" is "about the confusions of a boy, Max, making his way in a world he can't control. His father is gone, his mother is spending time with a younger boyfriend, his sister is becoming a teenager and no longer has interest in him. At the same time, Max finds himself capable of startling acts of wildness: He wears a wolf suit, bites his mom, and can't always control his outbursts. During a fight at home, Max flees and runs away into the woods. He finds a boat there, jumps in, and ends up on the open sea, destination unknown. He lands on the island of The Wild Things, and soon he becomes their king. But things get complicated when Max realizes that The Wild Things want as much from him as he wants from them. Funny, dark, and alive, 'The Wild Things' is a timeless and time-tested tale for all ages" (Publisher's blurb). Sendak's picture book has evolved considerably in the course of its successive artistic transformations, with Sendak's permission and involvement. Sendak wrote the libretto for Oliver Knussen's opera, "Where The Wild Things Are" (1980). Now, again with his blessings, it is a major Hollywood film and an intriguing Dave Eggers novel. An absolute "must-have" title for Dave Eggers collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover "Fur-Covered" Edition/First Printing still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. You Shall Know Our Velocity: The Uncorrected Proof

Imprint: London, England, Hamish Hamilton, 2003
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 371 pages. The author's debut novel. Uncorrected Proof. Precedes and should not be confused with the regular trade edition. Published in a small and limited one-time-only print run as a softcover original only for the exclusive use of the author and publisher. None of the copies was sold commercially. It has no ISBN of its own. The Uncorrected Proof is now rare. A brilliant production by Hamish Hamilton: Regular-sized volume format. Softcovers with the opening paragraph of the novel on the cover and titles on the spine, as issued. Text by Dave Eggers. Printed on archival stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its earliest-state publication, Dave Eggers' "You Shall Know Our Velocity". His first, and in many ways, still his best, novel. Excerpted in The New Yorker Magazine, the novel is a further exploration of the themes of his breakthrough memoir, "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius". The title comes from the "Jumping People", who wanted to become birds and believed that by constantly trying to jump off a cliff, they would eventually learn how to fly. They left a poignant message on the same cliff, carved in stone, their motto as well as epitaph. The Spanish conquistadors who found the inscription translated it (correctly) as "you shall know our velocity". As such, Eggers' ears are keenly attuned to the malaise (as well as the inchoate, redemptive possibility) of contemporary life, which is otherwise about mindless velocity, speed as the principal quality of life. "He writes wonderfully. An extremely impressive debut" (John Banville). An absolute "must-have" title for Dave Eggers collectors. This is a copy of the Uncorrected Proof, and it is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the Back Cover by Dave Eggers. It is signed directly on the cover itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with a pristine copy of the lovely, multi-page Souvenir Program of the event during which his signature was obtained. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Uncorrected Proof of the First British Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the 2002 and 2011 Reissued Editions, which are themselves available in multiple subsequent printings. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Carl Laanes: Oversize-volume format. Black "pebbled" leatherette boards with a photographic reproduction pasted in front and gilt titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by William Eggleston. Essay by John Szarkowski, one of the seminal essays on photography, not just Eggleston, ever written. Printed on pristine-white, glossy stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition of the same apt name held at Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in 1976. Presents "William Eggleston's Guide". The ground-breaking and enormously influential distillation of his pioneering work. Despite the ensuing controversy, the first all-color photography exhibition of the images in this volume achieved two things almost overnight: It immediately established Eggleston's reputation as the most important photographer working primarily in color (after initially and intermittently working in black-and-white). It also made color itself a now-widely-accepted medium for serious art photography (no mean feat at the time precisely because color, having become the dominant choice, commercially and vernacularly, since its invention was thereby largely ignored as facile by serious photographers). Like a prodigiously talented writer who needed a great editor to give his work shape, phrasing, and rhythm, Eggleston needed John Szarkowski, who deserves credit for being the book's full-fledged collaborator. He worked with Eggleston to edit 375 images down to 75 for the exhibition and 48 for the book. Color remains a significant artistic challenge to this day: Your eyes "de-focus", do not know - despite what you think - what to look for in a color photograph, especially a bad one. Every image in color is inherently "all over the place", distracted, as it were, rather than focussed. Eggleston (as described by Szarkowski) shows that to be an effective colorist, one must, intuitively or consciously, use color as a formal element, that is, be a formalist. The work of a brilliant contemporary photographer like Alec Soth is contained, not just implied, in this Guide, and not just because of their shared subject matter. "At once ordinary and spectacular, they look like someone's not particularly interesting snapshots until their matter-of-fact gorgeousness kicks in" (Vince Aletti). An absolute "must-have" title for William Eggleston collectors. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: It should also be noted that this copy is not "bowed", "slanted", or "skewed", as may be found in many other copies available online. Despite such flaws, the latter command hundreds of dollars. A rare copy thus. 48 color plates. "William Eggleston's Guide" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER WILLIAM EGGLESTON TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0870703781.

The first and only edition. Limited Edition of 1500 numbered and signed copies. Photographs and brief text by Arthur Elgort. List of Plates And Credits appended at the end. Printed in gravure on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is outstanding in every respect: Each gravure plate is palpably rich and warm. In wraparound pictorial DJ, which features "Wendy Whitelaw, Park Avenue, July 1981", as issued. Presents Arthur Elgort's "Personal Fashion Pictures". The full range of the photographer's work: Fashion photographs, portraits, snapshots, nudes, and semi-abstract work. Fashion remains Arthur Elgort's passion. While he took lovely photographs of just about everything else, in this book at least, he sees them all from his personal perspective as Fashion Everywhere, that is to say, Beauty Everywhere (hence the title). For Elgort, fashion is not just on the runway, it is in the streets, in people's beautiful faces and voluptuous bodies, dressed or undressed, male or female, as seen by him and captured for posterity by the camera. Some of the most beautiful sequences in the book are his photographs of Balanchine and his New York City Ballet dancers, in rehearsal and posing imperiously before the camera, immobile just this once. His single most famous photograph (of the fashion model Wendy Whitelaw) is proof of fashion's inherent sex appeal: Elgort photographs Whitelaw from behind, the right sleeve of her Azzedine Alaia dress casually off her shoulder. The image has been copied innumerable times by other photographers without credit ever being given to Elgort (whose fame has now also been somewhat eclipsed, and he doesn't mind, by his son Ansel, the Hollywood actor/heartthrob). The photograph of the Dutch model Piet Houtenbous and his son frolicking in the nude offers a glimpse of pure joy. An absolute "must-have" title for Arthur Elgort collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the Back Limitation Page. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Arthur Elgort. This title is a photography book classic. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and despite its imperfection (slight wear on the DJ edges and spine, but it's there) is still in especially fine condition: Each gravure plate is clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 72 gravure plates. One of the most brilliant photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. .

Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly copies that are signed on a tipped-in page. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents Nathan Englander's "Dinner At The Center of The Earth". His timely political thriller-novel. "Unfolds in the highly charged territory of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and pivots on the complex relationship between a secret prisoner and his guard. A prisoner in a secret cell. The guard who has watched over him a dozen years. An American waitress in Paris. A young Palestinian man in Berlin who strikes up an odd friendship with a wealthy Canadian businessman. And The General, Israel's most controversial leader, who lies dying in a hospital, the only man who knows of the prisoner's existence. From these vastly different lives, Nathan Englander has woven a powerful, intensely suspenseful portrait of a nation riven by insoluble conflict, even as the lives of its citizens become fatefully and inextricably entwined. A political thriller of the highest order that interrogates the anguished, violent division between Israelis and Palestinians, and dramatizes the immense moral ambiguities haunting both sides. Who is right, who is wrong? Who is the guard, who is truly the prisoner?" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Nathan Englander collectors. Englander, Nathan
For The Relief Of Unbearable Urges

Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 1999
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 205 pages. The author's breakthrough debut collection. One of the most important literary debuts of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Nathan Englander's "For The Relief of Unbearable Urges". His first book, which immediately established his international reputation at the ripe old age of 23. Englander was based in Israel at the time of publication and for some time thereafter. "Nine graceful and remarkably self-assured stories. Ranging expertly from contemporary Israel to New York to isolated Yiddish communities in Russia and Europe, they spin a vision of 20th-century orthodox Judaism under siege from both political tyranny and the rapid pace of modern life. Spare and crystalline, capturing the singsong rhythms and sometimes contorted English of a primarily Yiddish cast, often striking a deliberately archaic tone. Despite their surface mixture of humor and horror, these are stories of ideas, offering complex meditations on Judaism through the eyes of an astonishing range of characters: A disconsolate middle-aged orthodox woman imprisoned in limbo by a husband who won't grant a divorce; a Cheever-esque Park Avenue financial analyst with a taxi-cab epiphany that he's Jewish; an American navigating the streets of contemporary Jerusalem during a terrorist campaign" (Publishers Weekly). As such, they have received and merit favorable comparisons with his great predecessors in Isaac Bashevis Singer and Bernard Malamud. An absolute "must-have" title for Nathan Englander collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Nathan Englander. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The Ministry Of Special Cases

Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 2007
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 339 pages. The author's debut novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Nathan Englander's "The Ministry of Special Cases". His triumphant first novel. "Young writers are often told to write about what they know. But the real trick to writing about what you know is to make sure you know MORE as you mature. The novel is set in 1976 in Buenos Aires during Argentina's 'Dirty War'. Kaddish Poznan, hijo de puta, son of a whore, earns a meager living defacing gravestones of Jewish whores and pimps whose more respectable children want to erase their immigrant parents' names and forget their shameful activities. Kaddish labors in the Jewish cemetery at night. His hardworking wife, Lillian, toils in an insurance agency, and their idealistic son, Pato, attends college, goes to concerts, and smokes pot with his friends. When Pato is taken from home, Kaddish learns what it really means to erase identity because no one in authority will admit Pato has been arrested. No one will even acknowledge that Pato exists. As Lillian and Kaddish attempt to penetrate The Ministry of Special Cases, Englander's novel takes on an epic quality in which Jewish parents descend into the underworld and journey through circles of hell. Gogol, Isaac Bashevis Singer, and Orwell all come to mind, but Englander's book is unique in its layering of Jewish tradition and totalitarian obliteration" (Allegra Goodman). An absolute "must-have" title for Nathan Englander collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Nathan Englander. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in are pristine copies of the Souvenir Materials of the event during which his signature was obtained. What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank

Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 2012
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 215 pages. The author's second collection of short stories. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Nathan Englander's "What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank". Eight brilliant short stories that add up to a cumulative whole. They grapple with the great questions of modern life "with a command of language and the imagination that place Englander at the very forefront of contemporary American fiction". The eponymous story, a nod to Raymond Carver's "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love", is a "provocative portrait of two marriages in which the Holocaust is played out as a devastating parlor game" (Publisher's blurb). The blurbs by two great American writers sum up Englander's achievement, and for that matter, what all great narrative ought to be: "Nathan Englander writes the stories I am always hoping for, searching for. These are stories that transport you into other lives, other dreams. Deft, engrossing, deeply satisfying" (Geraldine Brooks). "Manages to make his seemingly obsessive, insular concerns all the more universal for their specificity. It's this neat trick that makes the stories in his collection so utterly haunting" (Richard Russo). An absolute "must-have" title for Nathan Englander collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and dated (the day after publication) in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "Nathan Englander 8.2.12". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Englander launched the book in New York City. Imprint: Stockholm, Sweden, Journal Stockholm, 2003
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 2000 copies. Published as a hardcover original only. The Limited Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by J. H. Except for the credits and a brief text excerpt by Engstrom that is printed on the back cover, there is no text. Handmade gray cloth slipcase. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Stockholm, Sweden to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Presents J. H. Engstrom's "Trying To Dance". His best book. One of the few photographic projects of our time that capture the contemporary moment, it is "a non-linear juxtaposition of views of Engstrom's everyday surroundings, ranging from self-portraits and nudes to landscapes and interiors. The book does not offer the viewer an overall narrative that would subsume the meaning of the single image. It is a visual stream-of-consciousness monologue, an ongoing succession of moments that retain an importance of their own, fragments of relentlessly passing time. The impression of looking at memories, rather than documentary images, is heightened by the variety of the photographs" (Martin Jaeggi). "A masterpiece of enigma and indeterminacy. In the vanguard of a new genre that depicts a veiled, oblique, almost novelistic view of modern life, especially modern relationships" (Martin Parr and Gerry Badger). "I can only make photographs of what I feel, of what results from my encounters with people. In this regard, my work is completely subjective. At the same time, I am interested in objectivity, in the fact that since you take photographs, you always deal with reality. And in this respect, I am not interested in subjectivity. It's a paradox" (J. H. Engstrom). An absolute "must-have" title for J. H. Engstrom collectors. This title is a great art photography book. This is one few copies of the Limited Edition still available online, is beautifully encased in an elegant custom-made cloth slipcase, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates. "Trying To Dance" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 150 pages. Collection of color photographs on subject. One of the most important photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Mitch Epstein and Gerhard Steidl: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 4 pounds. Gray cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Mitch Epstein. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. In matching pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Mitch Epstein's "American Power". His ground-breaking and ongoing project. "Tackles one of the most loaded issues in the nation's agenda: What and who powers America? Between 2003 and 2008, prompted by the evacuation of an environmentally contaminated Ohio town, Epstein travelled the United States to document the country's energy hot spots, where fossil fuel, nuclear, hydro-electric, wind, and solar power are produced, encountering further contaminations, Homeland Security obstacles, corporate invincibility, and the occasional token of hope. In a post-Katrina and post-Patriot Act America, the angle of engagement permitted Epstein often varied so that many of the power plants and refineries were shot from an enforced distance ('If you were Muslim, you'd be cuffed and taken in for questioning', he quotes an FBI agent in West Virginia). Alongside these classic depictions of looming, obdurate power, Epstein includes more idiomatic images: A woman wading in the water above Niagara Falls, father-and-son motorcross bikers, a tree cluttered with debris, which bring the issues back to human scale. In an accompanying essay, he tells us how these experiences deepened his political convictions, and led him to think harder about the artist's role in a country teetering between collapse and transformation. Here is his portrait of early 21st-century America, as it clings to past comforts and gropes for a more sensible and sustainable future" (Publisher's blurb). "My aim is to engage with the complexity of the cultural state of things rather than reduce it to visual sloganeering" (Mitch Epstein). An absolute "must-have" title for Mitch Epstein collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the half-title page by Mitch Epstein. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. Edition: First Edition

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 295 pages. Collection of color photographs. One of the most important photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Mitch Epstein and Gerhard Steidl: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 4 pounds. Brown cloth boards with metallic-silver titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Mitch Epstein. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Mitch Epstein's "Family Business". A visual-cum-textual narrative. It is the photographer's deeply personal account, in images and a few words, of The American Dream-Become-The American Nightmare. "Mitch Epstein was 48 and living in New York when his mother called him about the fire. On a windy August night in 1999, two 12-year-old boys had broken into his father's boarded-up apartment building in Holyoke, Massachusetts and just for the hell of it, set it ablaze. The fire spread, engulfing a 19th-century Catholic church, then a whole city block. The $15 million lawsuit brought by the church against the senior Mr. Epstein unravelled his life. Faced with the family crisis, Mitch went home to help, possessed by the question of how his father, owner of the largest furniture and appliance store in New England, and a former 'Chamber of Commerce Businessman of The Year' recipient, ended up as a character out of an Arthur Miller tragedy. An epic work about the demise of a Jewish-immigrant dynasty. Traces the parallel fall of a New England town from industrial giant to drug-dealing capital" (Publisher's blurb). The brilliance (and poignance) of the book lies in its dispassionate (though never cold) rigor, in the face of its harrowing subject. Epstein combines photographs with video clips to re-create a whole world, now gone for good. Divided into four chapters ("Store", "Property", "Town", and "Home"), he also incorporates storyboards, archival material, and his own text. The result is a photographically-based, mixed-media "graphic novel" that shows us how the American Dream can be upended and ruined by one prank. An absolute "must-have" title for Mitch Epstein collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Mitch Epstein. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped in-page. This title is a great photography book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Mitch Epstein's "Work". Some of his finest and most representative work, which has significantly expanded and enriched the formal, narrative, and thematic possibilities of photography. "While Mitch Epstein is widely acknowledged as one of the world's most distinguished art photographers, a complete survey of his work has never been published until now. Allows readers to trace the evolution of Epstein's entire career, following formal and thematic concerns that allow us to see how his aesthetics, his techniques, and his politics have shifted and influenced one another over time. His early work on recreation is given its most natural yet unexpected configuration: Images from the United States are mixed with those from other parts of the world. Sections on each of his major projects cover 'Common Practice' (1973-1989), 'Vietnam' (1992-1995), 'The City' (1995-1998), 'Family Business' (2000-2003), and the ongoing project, 'American Power'. The beginning of each chapter is a short essay or an excerpt from his previously published writings" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Mitch Epstein collectors. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. None of the copies was sold commercially. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago in January/February 2011. Presents "Elliott Erwitt: Small And Serious". A lovely selection of the finest of his less-well-known photographs. A photographer identified with irrepressible vitality, the catalog shows Erwitt's more serious, even darker side. "As you examine the photographs in this select volume, you will see thoughtful consideration of the darker side of the light. Contemplative and enigmatic. Somber, respectful, and nuanced, it is precisely because the artist Erwitt has made his peace with the pain and uncertainty of our collective existence that he can so genuinely respond to and transmit an understanding of both the dystopia and its opposite, the joys and silliness and warmth of human connection" (Paul Berlanga). "Arlington, Virginia, 1963" is a portrait of inconsolable grief: A black-veiled Jacqueline Kennedy, poised despite being visibly drenched in tears, burying her husband, the assassinated 35th President of the United States of America. For those who have seen (or have) everything else by Elliott Erwitt, this is a gem of a book. An absolute "must-have" title for Elliott Erwitt collectors. This title is now collectible. The photographer's second collection of dog portraits, preceded by "Son of Bitch" (1974), followed by "Woof" (2005), and culled from a lifetime of taking such pictures. When viewed as a trilogy, the collections amount to one of the most exhaustive AND endearing collections on their beloved subject in the history of photography. "They are portraits in the full sense of the word: Whether posed or impromptu, each image reveals something true about a particular dog or about dogs in general. In all shapes and sizes, they are pensive and playful, reflective and active. They zestfully leap into a lake or lie belly up in a grassy field. Even if you're not a dedicated dog lover, this book will charm you" (Publishers Weekly). Another legendary photographer of dog portraits (exclusively Weimaraners in his case) offered the following compliment: "There are only two kinds of photography: Elliott Erwitt's and everyone else's" (William Wegman). "Elliott Erwitt's dogs make me yearn to take every single one of them home and hug them" (Audrey Hepburn). "A dog teaches a man fidelity" (Elliott Erwitt). Imprint: New York City, NY, Crown Publishers, 2000
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 153 pages. Collection of pieces on subject. Intended by the author as the "essayistic" version and sequel to her ground-breaking novel, "Like Water for Chocolate", it is one of the finest books on its subject ever written. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Laura Esquivel's "Between Two Fires" in a felicitous English translation. A sumptuous delight. "In all of these essays, Esquivel reflects on the essential way that food connects people to the important, spiritual aspects of life, often promoting her ideal of the New Man who 'will give equal value to production and reproduction, to reason and emotion, to the intimate and the public, to the material and the spiritual'. She employs her characteristic blend of anecdotes and Mexican recipes. Other works are more philosophical and describe the time the author gave up chocolate as a political statement, among other things. Esquivel has a strong, distinctive voice and a passion for her subject" (Publishers Weekly). An absolute "must-have" title for Laura Esquivel collectors. Converging Territories: Photographs By Lalla Essaydi

Imprint: New York City, NY, Powerhouse Books, 2005
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 32 pages. The artist/photographer's breakthrough first book. Retrospective collection of color portrait-photographs. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Lalla Essaydi and Daniel Power: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Lalla Essaydi. Essay by Amanda Carlson. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Lalla Essaydi's "Converging Territories". The artist/photographer's ground-breaking debut. "According to Islamic tradition, men dominate the public sphere and women are expected to remain indoors at most times. In Lalla Essaydi's native Morocco, this confinement has been further used as a punishment for those who transgress the rules of gender conduct. Essaydi reverses the meaning of these spaces, using them as a place where women are seen, not hidden. Essaydi's subjects are given a voice not only through their actions, but also through the written word. The women pose after long sessions during which Essaydi covers their clothing and few areas of exposed skin as well as the rooms themselves with elaborate Islamic calligraphy. The words are drawn with henna, a form of adornment considered women's work. Her images reflect the complex female identities found in Morocco and other Muslim societies, and give women the opportunity to engage in the emerging culture of Islamic feminism" (Publisher's blurb). Lalla Essaydi received her BFA from Tufts University and Masters in Fine Arts (MFA) from The School of The Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Her work has been shown globally at Edwynn Houk Gallery and Laurence Miller Gallery New York; Schneider Gallery Chicago; Howard Yezerski Gallery Boston; Fries Museum The Netherlands; the Art Institute of Chicago; The New Britain Museum of Art; the Columbus Museum of Art; The National Museum of Singapore; and the Danish Center for Culture and Development Denmark. An American by choice and residence, Essaydi was born in Morocco and now lives in New York City. That her work would never ever be shown in most (though not all) Arab countries and that she would never be allowed to be an artist if she ever went back almost goes without saying. About presence-as-absence/absence-as-presence, her work is unfamiliar and even alienating at first glance, which all breakthrough art is. It is only upon repeated and immersive viewings that one realizes its originality and beauty: Her work is unique, lyrically so, not just distinctive, innovative, and defiant. "I am a book that has no ending. Each book I write is the first" (Lalla Essaydi). An absolute "must-have" title for Lalla Essaydi collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed (in Arabic) in black ink-pen on the title page by Lalla Essaydi. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. Eugenides, Jeffrey
Fresh Complaint: Stories

Imprint: New York City, NY, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2017
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 285 pages. The author's debut collection of short stories. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents Jeffrey Eugenides' "Fresh Complaint: Stories". His brilliant first collection. "Eugenides' novels have shown him to be an astute observer of the crises of adolescence, self-discovery, family love, and what it means to be an American in our times. These stories explore equally rich and intriguing territory. Ranging from the bitingly reproductive antics of 'Baster' to the dreamy, moving account of a young traveler's search for enlightenment in 'Air Mail' (selected by Annie Proulx for 'The Best American Short Stories'), this collection presents characters in the midst of personal and national emergencies. We meet a failed poet who, envious of other people's wealth, becomes an embezzler; a clavichordist whose dreams of art founder under the obligations of marriage and fatherhood; and in 'Fresh Complaint', a high school student whose wish to escape the strictures of her immigrant family lead her to a drastic decision that upends the life of a middle-aged British physicist. Narratively compelling, beautifully written, and packed with a density of ideas despite their fluid grace" (Publisher's blurb). Among his peers, Eugenides has probably the most poetic sensibility. His mastery of the formal possibilities of the novel and the linguistic intricacies of the English language is unequalled among writers of his generation. He shows here that his genius extends to the deceptively simple short story genre. An absolute "must-have" title for Jeffrey Eugenides collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Jeffrey Eugenides. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as many copies available online are. The author signs like his Greek ancestors, with his family name only. One of the most valuable photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. Many copies were acquired by private and public university libraries. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by the Aperture Foundation: Oversize-volume format. Khaki cloth boards with photographic reproductions pasted in front and on the back, and blue titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photo-albums by various artists, a Who's Who of 20th century and contemporary photography, as well as by anonymous photographers. Edited with definitive text by Verna Posever Curtis. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Hong Kong to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in a beautifully produced volume, the Library of Congress' "Photographic Memory: The Album In The Age of Photography". The role of memory in photography, the role of photography in memory. "As photography became an increasingly accessible medium in the 20th century, the popularity of the photographic album exploded, yielding a wonderful range of objects made for varying purposes: To memorialize, to document, to promote, to educate, and to channel creative energy. Traces the rise of the album from the turn of last century to the present day, showcasing some of the most important examples in the history of the medium, as collected by the Library of Congress. Includes albums by acclaimed photographers and filmmakers, among them Walker Evans, Danny Lyon, F. Holland Day, Jim Goldberg, Dorothea Lange, Duane Michals, and W. Eugene Smith as well as lesser-known but equally significant albums. Each album is beautifully reproduced over numerous spreads with an accompanying detailed explanatory text. An insightful history of the album format as well as an informative Essay about caring for and restoring albums are included. At a time when the physical collection of photographs has become increasingly immaterial through the ascent of digital technology, and at a time in which radical shifts have occurred in the status of handmade artists' objects, 'Photographic Memory' is a comprehensive illustrated history of a form of presentation that became an art in itself" (Publisher's blurb). The Digital Age will NOT kill the handmade photo-album although it has definitely lessened its production in terms of sheer quantity. But, in the process, it will make the photo-album - just like the photography book and the photographic print - more, not less, desirable. An absolute "must-have" title for photography book collectors. This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. One of the most important photography collections of its kind. A fine copy. . ISBN 1597111317.

Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 318 pages. Exhibition Monograph. One of the best books of the photographic art of Walker Evans. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Bruce Campbell: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with metallic-silver titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Walker Evans. Essays by Maria Morris Hambourg, Jeff L. Rosenheim, Doug Eklund, and Mia Fineman. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Madrid, Spain to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the major retrospective exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York in 2000. Presents "Walker Evans". "The best book on the photographer and his images" (Library Journal). Images, now icons, of national identity that have shaped Americans' views of themselves, and influenced important currents of modern art: "A tenant farmer's deprivation-lined face. Antebellum homes that have seen better days. The display windows of small-town main streets. The early subway commuter. Billboards. The full range of Evans' work, from his 1920's black-and-white street scenes of anonymous urban dwellers to the color photographs of signs and letter forms from his final years. Soon after he returned from Paris to New York City in 1927, Evans began contributing to the development of American photography. He captured the substance of people and buildings with a spare elegance that is utterly unpretentious. His gaze is serious, but often amused as well, direct yet never simple. The time that he and writer James Agee spent with Alabama sharecropper families yielded an evocative, honest record of The Great Depression, published as 'Let Us Now Praise Famous Men' (1941). Evans then turned his lens back on New Yorkers, photographing subway riders with a camera hidden in his coat, in 'Many Are Called'. Evans always chose art over what he criticized as artiness. Offers insights into the sources and legacy of Evans' work" (Publisher's blurb). "Whether he is an artist or not, the photographer is a joyous sensualist, for the simple reason that the eye traffics in feelings, not in thoughts. He is a voyeur by nature. He is also reporter, tinkerer, and spy" (Walker Evans). An absolute "must-have" title for Walker Evans collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Faberge, Carl (Artist) & Swezey, Marilyn Pfeifer (Author)
Faberge Flowers

Imprint: New York City, NY, Harry N. Abrams, 2004
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 128 pages. Retrospective monograph on subject. The single best book on the art of the Faberge Flower. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents "Faberge Flowers". Some of Carl Faberge's greatest creations. "At one time, the royal families of Europe and Russia were accustomed to having their every whim satisfied, even apparently impossible desires like freezing and preserving Nature in its most perfect form. This collection of photographs and essays documents Carl Faberge's attempts to do just that for the Russian Imperial Family and other aristocrats throughout Europe. In the late 1800's and early 1900's, Faberge created delicate replicas of pansies, lilies of the valley, violets, and other flowers that were most often destined for glass display cabinets in the royal palaces of London and Moscow. The lush color photographs allow readers to get closer to the pieces than they could ever hope to otherwise, so close that one can see the real fuzz used to augment an intricately crafted dandelion puff and get a sense of how the jars were fashioned in order to look like they were filled with water" (Publishers Weekly). Faberge is identified with his opulent Russian Easter Eggs, which fetch millions of dollars today. The story of his exquisite, Oriental-flavored flower creations is much less-known even though "The Wild Rose Collection" of Queen Elizabeth II and "The Red Currants" at The Hermitage are world treasures. Combining brilliant yet simply composed photographs of these objects of fantasy with texts that illuminate the world of Faberge, the cultural historian Marilyn Pfeifer Swezey finally restores these aesthetic splendors to their rightful place. The flower jewels come gloriously to life but the water Faberge re-created to complete the illusion of Nature is probably even more beguiling to behold. A book that belongs on every shelf of great photography and art book collection. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online are remainder-marked while others command as much as $400. A scarce copy thus. 78 color plates. One of the most beautiful books on art. A fine copy. . Farber, Manny (Author) & Polito, Robert (Editor)
Farber On Film: The Complete Film Writings Of Manny Farber

Imprint: New York City, NY, The Library Of America, 2009
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 924 pages. Retrospective collection of essays. One of the most important film collections of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents, in one meticulously edited and elegant volume, "Farber On Film: The Complete Film Writings of Manny Farber". ALL of the great film critic's essays. A consistently top-notch body of work that reminds us, in almost 1000 pages, how film criticism was once practiced as if it were an art form, and was treasured as such by cinephile-readers. "With serious film criticism in a serious and inexorable decline due to the dumbing-down of the movie-going audience, these writings by Manny Farber (1917-2008) constitute a pointed reminder of what has been lost. Farber is best-known for championing such maverick filmmakers as director Sam Fuller, most notably in a signature 1962 essay, in which he excoriated moribund 'white elephant art' and praised the 'termite art' made by eager, eccentric artists, art that eats its own boundaries. Amasses all of Farber's writings, from weekly reviews for The New Republic and The Nation in the 1940's and 1950's to wider-ranging essays of the 1960's and 1970's for such specialized publications as Artforum. Throughout, Farber's iconoclastic viewpoints - he panned 'The Magnificent Ambersons' and 'Casablanca' - and virtuosic prose provide limitless rewards for readers who can negotiate his unexpected intellectual and stylistic turns" (Gordon Flagg). Even though she was herself frequently one of Farber's harsh targets, Susan Sontag respected Farber as the best full-time film critic America has ever had: "The liveliest, smartest, most original film critic this country ever produced" (Susan Sontag). An absolute "must-have" title for Manny Farber collectors. This title is a great collection. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. The finest American film critic of the 20th century. A fine copy. . ISBN 159853050X.
