Franzen, Jonathan
The Corrections
Imprint: New York City, NY, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2001
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 568 pages. The author's breakthrough third novel. One of the finest American novels of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a regular first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out upon publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Jonathan Franzen's "The Corrections". The "masterpiece" (The New York Times) that took him ten years to write, during which time he was largely silent. In America, that usually means the end of one's artistic career. "The brightest, boldest, and most ambitious novel I've read in many years. With this dazzling work, Franzen gives notice that from now on, he is only going to hunt with the big cats" (Pat Conroy). An absolute "must-have" title for Jonathan Franzen collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen on the title page by Jonathan Franzen. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The Erratum Slip is laid-in: "We have discovered that the text on pages 430 and 431 was reversed in this printing. Page 431 should be read before page 430. We apologize for this error". It also comes with a pristine copy of the Souvenir Announcement of the event during which his signature was obtained. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. It is one of the nicest signed copies we have ever seen. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. Selected by The New Yorker Magazine as one of "Twenty Writers for the 21st Century", a selection that was prescient because he had not written anything in almost a decade. Winner of the National Book Award in 2001 for "The Corrections". One of the finest American writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JONATHAN FRANZEN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0374129983.

Imprint: Liege, Belgium, POC Editions, 2005
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 70 pages. Collection of color portrait-photographs. One of the best titles in the iconic series of "Portraits Photographiques et Uniformes". The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Charles Freger: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Charles Freger. Text by Bill Kouwenhoven in the French original and felicitous English translation. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Liege, Belgium to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exquisite in its clarity, tonal range, and attention to detail. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Charles Freger's "2Nelson/Double Nelson: Portraits Photographiques et Uniformes". Portraits of wrestlers in Europe. Solo and action sequences rendered with pathos and drama as the intertwined bodies "seem to create a new species of thick-bodied, two-headed quadrupeds" (Bill Kouwenhoven). The work of a brilliant portrait-photographer whose only possible equal is Rineke Dijkstra, the Freger Style is documentary PLUS portrait. His antecedent is August Sander, with an opposite twist: His portraits present not a national community (as Sander does) but the individuals who give a specific community its face and form. As such, his work is neither purely documentary or sociological. His emphasis on individual particularity repudiates nationalism as well as "globalization" and "the human family", the most cherished ideas of humanist-photojournalists (and corporations), as nothing more and nothing less than a myth. Instead, he suggests, human beings choose, almost innately, to identify with a much smaller community than the nation or the UN. With every seemingly exotic portrait, Freger poses the same provocative and compelling questions: Why do I choose to belong to a tribe? Why do I adhere to its rules? Why do I believe in the necessity of social cohesion? Why do I express myself through others? Freger reminds us that so-called personal identity is inconceivable without the notion of belonging to a community; ethnic and sexual minorities understand this instinctively better than anyone else. An absolute "must-have" title for Charles Freger collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Charles Freger. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CHARLES FREGER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). Edition: First Edition

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 75 pages. Collection of color portrait-photographs. One of the most remarkable titles in the iconic series of "Portraits Photographiques et Uniformes". The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only whose limitation is not stated. Commissioned by Arcelor Packaging International, the book was not sold commercially. It is Charles Freger's rarest title. A brilliant production by Charles Freger: Regular-sized volume format. Pristine-white softcovers, as issued. Photographs by Charles Freger. Text by Didier Mouchel. Pictorial steel metal case. The latter is uniquely appropriate: The steel metal can (which Arcelor makes) is the most efficient, economical, and safest way to pack and deliver food and beverage products worldwide. Steel packaging is also environmentally-friendly and recyclable. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Nantes, France to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover, as issued. Presents Charles Freger's "Donneur: Portraits Photographiques et Uniformes". Commissioned portraits of middle-aged men and women (the average age is 50) who work for Arcelor Packaging International. As such, they are the older - and more prosperous - counterparts of the young workers Freger has photographed extensively. More important, they embody the worker as someone who identifies with a specific commercial enterprise in a specific place (rather than say, a national labor union or a Worker's Movement). Pristine-white hard boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Charles Freger. Text by Raphaelle Stopin and Didier Mouchel in the French original and felicitous English translation. Printed on thick, glossy stock paper in Paris, France to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark exhibition held at the Galerie du Chateau d'Eau Toulouse in 2002. Presents Charles Freger's "Legionnaires: Portraits Photographiques Et Uniformes". Formal and informal portraits of multi-national members of the legendary French Legion, "freedom fighters"/soldiers-for-hire/mercenaries, who are, not just represent, the ultimate symbol of state-neutral, military discipline. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed black pen-marker on the half-title page by Charles Freger. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online command hundreds of dollars. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CHARLES FREGER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 2914573073.

Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 144 pages. Retrospective collection of male nudes. One of the most beautiful erotic art photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 1000 copies. The first and only edition. The Limited Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Sam Shahid and Dimitri Levas: Regular-sized volume format. In black DJ with white titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Jim French's "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor". The last book published by him: A treasure trove of Polaroid male nudes. "All the Polaroid images in this volume were taken as research for Luger/Colt drawings. Soon after the Polaroid camera was introduced to the public, I purchased one and found it very helpful in creating my ever increasingly detailed drawings" (Jim French). French studied with the great painter Franz Kline, began his career as a painter and illustrator, before turning full-time to photography. The Classical lineage shows in even the most naughty and brazen photographs. Half, if not more than half, of the trick to all great male (and female) nude photography is the right choice of model. The men in this collection, with beautiful, chiseled faces, perfect physiques, and dare one say it, large endowments, were all born to be photographed. An absolute "must-have" title for Jim French and erotic art photography collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Jim French. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. French's famously exquisite signature is a work of art in and of itself. This title is an erotic art photography classic. Fridlund, Emily
History Of Wolves
Imprint: London, England, Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2017
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 280 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most important literary debuts of our time. The first appearance of the title in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Emily Fridlund's "History of Wolves". Singled out by the most prestigious British literary prize over hundreds of other candidate-titles, her mesmerizing first novel. "Exactly the kind of book you want to curl up with in the winter. Propulsive, vividly written, laced with a razor's chill, and filled with imagery that's impossible to forget. There is a constant sense of foreboding, of wondering when the truth will crash through the Minnesota ice. Linda is a loner, a teenaged girl who walks to school and lives on a failed commune in the woods. Outside of school, Linda begins to spend time with a young boy and his mother who move into a house across the lake. Fridlund masterfully ratchets up the tension, exploding this story of secrets with crisp, cutting prose that will leave you shocked and in awe. A remarkable novel that just so happens to be a debut by a fiercely talented writer" (Al Woodworth). "Its otherworldly winter escapism is just right for mid-season stir crazy. Supple fiction formed in able hands" (The National Post). An absolute "must-have" title for Emily Fridlund collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, dated (shortly after publication), and inscribed ("lined") in black pen-marker on the title page by the author: " 'And then there's this', 23/02/2017 Emily Fridlund". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The inscription is the first line of the novel's very last paragraph. This title will become a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed, post-publication dated, and inscribed ("lined") copies of the First British Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online command hundreds of dollars. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Binding:

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 115 pages. Retrospective collection of black-and-white photographs, presented as an Artist Book. One of Lee Friedlander's finest achievements. Limited Edition of 100 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with the regular trade edition, which was published simultaneously with it. They have the same ISBN. The Limited Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Lee Friedlander and Fraenkel Gallery: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs of Kitaj by Lee Friedlander. Remembrances by R. B. Kitaj and Maria Friedlander. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Meridian Printing Rhode Island from duotone separations by Thomas Palmer to the highest standards. In glassine DJ, as issued. Presents, in its Limited Edition format, Lee Friedlander's "Kitaj". One of Friedlander's most moving books. It is "an intimate friendship of more than three decades that is chronicled here along with the aesthetic evolution of two major American artists. R. B. Kitaj's unusual, handsome, troubled, charismatic face has been a rich subject for Lee Friedlander's camera since the two artists became friends in 1970, when both were teaching at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). 'Kitaj' begins and ends with photographs shot in Los Angeles, and the artist's passage from raw and vigorous young man to grizzly, white-haired prophet is charted through more than 90 images. A frank and moving series of images from 1994, focused on Kitaj during the days following his wife Sandra's sudden and unexpected death, achieve a disarming intimacy that could only have been the result of a deep and trusting friendship" (Publisher's blurb). Both Jewish-Americans were restless spirits. Friedlander has travelled throughout America more than any other photographer, which is saying a great deal as every photographer is innately peripatetic. Kitaj spent much of his life abroad, as an expatriate artist in the United Kingdom, where he developed lasting friendships with artists, writers, and philosophers such as David Hockney and Richard Wollheim. His magnificent collage-paintings have had an immense impact on contemporary art even as his draftsmanship remains unsurpassed, not even by David Hockney, another Master Draftsman. Having embarked on a personal diaspora, he emphasized that more than being The Wandering Jew, he was a Diasporist, by which he meant that he identified with the majority of the world's peoples, who are exiled or self-exiled. "The Diasporist lives and paints in two or more societies at once. You don't have to be a Jew to be a Diasporist" (Kitaj). An absolute "must-have" title for Lee Friedlander and R. B. Kitaj collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition of 100 copies, indicated/numbered as such in black ink-pen on the title page. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Lee Friedlander and R. B. Kitaj. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It is also signed in the same black ink-pen on the glassine DJ by both artists. This title is an art and photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 94 duotone plates. Two of the greatest artists of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER LEE FRIEDLANDER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1881337154.

Fronth, Per (Artist/Photographer) & Wood, John (Contributor)
Per Fronth: Cargo
Imprint: Chicago, IL, Schneider Gallery, 2000
Edition: First Edition
First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. Unpaginated. Exhibition Catalog. Limited Edition of 1500 copies. The first and only edition. Published as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Exhibition Catalog is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Per Fronth: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover, as issued. Photographically-based art by Per Fronth. Introduction by John Wood. Brief Biography appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Per Fronth's "Cargo". Some of Per Fronth's finest and most representative work. The great Norwegian artist/photographer enjoys cult status in both art and photographic circles throughout the world because he is a very special kind of artist: He begins with a photograph and then proceeds gradually to efface it by turning it into magical paintings ("totemic" is often used to describe the finished work). Per Fronth himself calls them "photo-transfers", which are beautiful not just because they evoke the elemental power of art that, as noted by John Wood, is now absent in most "conceptual" contemporary painting: The power of his work may be traced to the fact that at the deepest level, Per Fronth is a humanist and Maximalist in a world largely populated by merely lapidary craftsmen and Minimalists. The transfer is so complete that it is often very hard to see whether the finished work is a photograph (which it isn't) or a painting (which it isn't either). Per Fronth takes on the entire history of Western art in his work and emphasizes its Romanticism. His work is about every human being's inner life, its happiness as well as its sadness, its burdens and concerns. Hence the "cargo" of the title. In order to understand his work, John Wood believes one needs to turn to the music of such fellow visionaries as Arvo Part, John Tavener, and Henryk Gorecki. While the technical finesse of his work is impeccable, Per Fronth's work can only be understood if one expects and demands radical vision rather than mere "ideas" from an artist. An absolute "must-have" title for Per Fronth collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the Exhibition Catalog still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. 13 color plates. Per Fronth: Xingu Chronicles
Imprint: New York, Dillon Gallery, 1998
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 40 pages. Exhibition Catalog. One of Per Fronth's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a tiny first print run as a hardcover original only. The Exhibition Catalog is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Per Fronth: Regular-sized volume format. Red cloth boards with gilt titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographically-based art by Per Fronth. Essay by Donald Kuspit. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in South Korea to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Per Fronth's "Xingu Chronicles". Per Fronth's dramatically altered photographic images of the Xingu Indian tribe in the Amazon rain forest. Inspired by the "burning bush" motif that the Xingu tribe uncannily shares with the Western tradition, Per Fronth delicately applies the red color in all of the images he took. The results remind one of the work of two artist/photographers working in separate and divergent traditions: Edward S. Curtis and his pioneering photography of North American-Indian tribes and Luis Gonzalez Palma and his post-modern Romantic portraits in the Latin-American tradition. The great Norwegian artist/photographer enjoys cult status in both art and photographic circles throughout the world because he is a very special kind of artist: He begins with a photograph and then proceeds gradually to efface it by turning it into magical paintings ("totemic" is often used to describe the finished work). This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black pen on the title page by the artist/photographer: "Per Fronth 2000". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and publication-year dated copy of the Exhibition Catalog available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 13 color plates. One of the finest artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER PER FRONTH TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN B0006RKS0Y.

Fuentes, Carlos (Translated by Thomas Christensen)
Constancia And Other Stories For Virgins
Imprint: New York City, NY, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1990
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 340 pages. Retrospective collection of erotic short stories. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Carlos Fuentes' "Constancia And Other Stories For Virgins" in a felicitous English translation. Delectable sampling of his erotic mischiefs. Widely regarded as Mexico's man-of-letters, Fuentes was more erudite than most other Latin-American writers. Readers who have read him in the original claim that his mastery of the Spanish language is next to none among Latin-American writers in its lucidity, elegance, and beauty. He is highly regarded not just for his exquisite mastery of a very complex language but also for his restless imagination and genuine wisdom. Carlos Fuentes died on May 15, 2012 at the age of 83. To his credit, President Felipe Calderon was one of the very first to announce his death, a gesture that would be unheard-of from a political leader in America when one considers that Fuentes was such a vehement and often despairing critic of his country. Calderon was right to say that Fuentes' death is a loss to Mexico and world literature. An absolute "must-have" title for Carlos Fuentes collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. Winner of the Cervantes Prize in 1987, awarded to the greatest living writers in Spanish by the Spanish Government. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. Fuentes, Carlos
Myself With Others: Selected Essays
Imprint: New York City, NY, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1988
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 214 pages. The author's debut collection of essays originally written in English. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Carlos Fuentes' "Myself With Others: Selected Essays". Insightful, absorbing, and simply enjoyable essays originally written in English, the work of a Latin-American Master who is a true cosmopolitan. Dedicated to fellow writer Philip Roth (and his then-wife, the actress Claire Bloom), the essays recount the story of one writer's development and evaluates the work of other writers and artists who have had an indelible influence on him. They include such masterpieces as "How I Started To Write", "How I Wrote One of My Books" (which reads like a detective story), "Borges In Action", "Gabriel Garcia Marquez And The Invention of America", "Luis Bunuel And The Cinema of Freedom", and his celebrated Harvard Commencement Address (Fuentes wrote many of the essays while he was a Visiting Professor at Harvard University). With this collection, Carlos Fuentes proves, if proof were needed, that he is equally adept in the English language, as his idol Jorge Luis Borges was, and as very few other of his great Latin-American compatriot/writers are. Widely regarded as Mexico's man-of-letters, Fuentes was more erudite than most other Latin-American writers. Readers who have read him in the original claim that his mastery of the Spanish language is next to none among Latin-American writers in its lucidity, elegance, and beauty. Imprint: New York City, NY, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1995
Edition: First Edition
Binding:

With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 266 pages. The author's collection of short stories. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Carlos Funetes' "The Crystal Frontier" in a felicitous English translation. Nine stories that cumulatively add up to a brilliant novel. All concern people who have to do with the family of Leonardo Barroso, a powerful oligarch in Mexico with manifold connections to the United States. Recalls similar themes in Fuentes' masterpiece, "The Old Gringo", in its fervid examination of the uneasy and inseparable relations between Americans and Mexicans. Widely regarded as Mexico's man-of-letters, Fuentes was more erudite than most other Latin-American writers. The Hydra Head
Imprint: New York City, NY, Farrar, Straus & Company, 1978
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 292 pages. The author's seventh novel. One of Carlos Fuentes' finest achievements. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Carlos Fuentes' "The Hydra Head" in a felicitous English translation. His first, triumphant attempt at the spy thriller-genre novel. The book represents a major departure for Carlos Fuentes after "Terra Nostra", his massive and masterly historical/fantasy novel. The title comes from the fact that the plot is extremely complex, involving numerous characters, with labyrinthine plot twists and turns worthy of the proverbial hydra-headed monster. "The first Third World spy thriller, an action-filled, quick-paced, terse novel of intrigue as contemporary as a headline" (Publisher's blurb). Dedicated to Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Claude Rains, who are all featured on the cover. Calderon was right to say that Fuentes' death is a loss to Mexico and world literature. An absolute "must-have" title for Carlos Fuentes collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen on the front free endpaper by Carlos Fuentes. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Unlike copies available online, it is NOT price-clipped, remainder-marked, yellowed at the white DJ flaps, or sunned at the spine. Every internal page is clean and unmarked. Copies available online have such serious flaws, but are priced as though they had collectible value. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Fuentes, Carlos; Donoso, Jose; Sarduy, Severo (Translated by Suzanne Jill Levine & Hallie Taylor)
Triple Cross: Holy Place, Hell Has No Limits, From Cuba With A Song
Imprint: New York City, NY, E. P. Dutton Publishers, 1972
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 335 pages. Omnibus collection of novellas. One of the most important literary collections of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Carlos Fuentes', Jose Donoso's, and Severo Sarduy's "Triple Cross: Holy Place, Hell Has No Limits, From Cuba With A Song" in felicitous English translations. Marks the three great Latin-American novellas' first appearance in published form. More important, "From Cuba With A Song" also marks the very first appearance in English of the brilliant Cuban poet and novelist Severo Sarduy in English, and remains his single most celebrated work in the Spanish original and in translation. Both Fuentes and Donoso are well-known to readers in English. Sarduy is not. So the publisher provides helpful information about him: "Born in Cuba, Sarduy studied at the University of Havana and was one of the few writers involved in the fight against Batista. In 1960, he left for Paris, where he became the editor of the Latin-American Collection of 'Editions du Seuil'. Among the books he introduced to the French were Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' and Jose Lezama Lima's 'Paradiso'. 'De Donde son los cantantes' ('From Cuba With A Song') was Sarduy's first experimental work. Divided into three sections, each corresponding to the ethnic groups that make up Cuban nationality (Spanish, African, and Chinese), the novella explores the disparate elements at work in Latin-American culture. For Sarduy, culture is a series of radical and often violent displacements and errors" (Publisher's blurb). "The characters are made-up for a carnival that will let loose their deepest fantasies. Exposes the complicity between the novel's conventions and society's patriarchal structure. Denounces the quest for Latin-American identity as yet another ideological maneuver by writers who wish to strengthen the hold of authority" (Gonzalez Echevarria). An absolute "must-have" title for Carlos Fuentes, Jose Donoso, and Severo Sarduy collectors. This title is a great collection. This is one of few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 240 pages. Landmark Retrospective Monograph. The very first comprehensive monograph in English on the single most creative and visionary architect of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Art and architecture by Sou Fujimoto. Text by Naomi Pollock. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "Sou Fujimoto". The prodigy-successor of Frank Gehry: The architect-as-artist par excellence. "Occasionally, an architect emerges whose vision is so fresh that it causes us to reconsider the very nature of architecture itself. Sou Fujimoto is just such an architect. Guided by instinct and keen observation, he casts convention aside. Instead, he blurs boundaries and routinely re-thinks basic building blocks. Both comfortably familiar and curiously enigmatic, Fujimoto's dynamic work grabs our attention, then lingers on in our minds. Born in Hokkaido, Fujimoto received his undergraduate degree in architecture from Tokyo Imperial University before embarking on an uncharted, solo exploration that has probed the possibilities of architecture. Unfettered by the ideas and practices of others, Fujimoto's work has clarity of thought and purity of execution. Garnering significant international attention for his extremely successful Serpentine Pavilion in London (2013), Fujimoto was the youngest architect to receive the prestigious commission. In 2012, he was part of the Japanese team that won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Biennale for the design of alternative housing concepts for the homes that were destroyed by the tsunami" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Sou Fujimoto collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and dated (the day after publication) in black pen-marker on the title page by the artist/architect: "Sou Fujimoto 20160524". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Fujimoto's signature is serpentine and as such, uniquely his. This title is a classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Sou Fujimoto made a one-time-only appearance in New York City to launch the book during which event his signature was obtained. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with archival materials and color plates. One of the most brilliant artist/architects of our time. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 0714870684.

In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of Robert F. Kennedy's 75th Birthday Anniversary in 2000. Presents Paul Fusco's "RFK Funeral Train". Photographs of Americans who went out of their way to pay a final tribute to the slain Presidential candidate, captured for posterity in a moving photobook: One photograph after another of Americans from all walks of life saluting the passing train, a visual elegy of rigorous simplicity and transcendent power. With Kennedy-esque sense of ceremony and solemn occasion, Robert Fitzgerald Kennedy's surviving family and followers honored him by taking his casket on a funeral train trip. It was a felicitous gesture as Kennedy was in the midst of his cross-country Presidential campaign when he was assassinated in Los Angeles, on June 5, 1968. The funeral train was, in effect, the continuation and culmination of his campaign and journey unto immortality. An absolute "must-have" title for Paul Fusco collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in metallic-silver pen-marker on the title page by Paul Fusco. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great photography book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/ First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Precedes and should NOT be confused with the Softcover Edition, which was published simultaneously with it as well as the 2001 Second Edition. Copies available online have serious flaws yet command hundreds of dollars. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. Fusco turned 88 years old in 2018, is quite ill, and no longer appears in public. A rare signed copy thus. 50 color plates. Paul Fusco's "RFK Funeral Train" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most important American photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. . Gadamer In Conversation: Reflections And Commentary
Imprint: New Haven, CT, Yale University Press, 2001
Edition: First Edition
Binding:

With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 174 pages. Retrospective collection of interviews. Now considered a late-modern classic. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are several. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents "Gadamer In Conversation: Reflections And Commentary" in a felicitous English translation. Six lively conversations with one of the 20th-century's Master Thinkers. "Looking back over his life and thought, Gadamer takes up key issues in his philosophy, addresses points of controversy, and replies to his critics, including those who accuse him of having been in complicity with the Nazis. A genial and direct conversationalist, Gadamer is here captured at his best and most accessible. The interviews took place between 1989 and 1996, and all but one appear in English for the first time in this volume. These conversations are a lucid introduction for readers new to the philosopher's thought and for experts, they present an invaluable commentary on Gadamer's most important themes" (Publisher's blurb). If more people read Gadamer (rather than say, Derrida or Chomsky), what Gadamer calls the "speculative mind" would be accorded more value than it has received. "We learn from the work of art how to tarry. I think people will not be able to endure for long doing exactly what everyone else is doing in their so-called free time" (Hans-Georg Gadamer). An absolute "must-have" title for Hans-Georg Gadamer collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 152 pages. Retrospective collection of interviews. One of the most important collections on Hans-Georg Gadamer. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents "Hans-Georg Gadamer: A Century of Philosophy" in a felicitous English translation. More illuminating interviews with the great philosopher. "A philosophical and historical testament to the twentieth century, this volume consists of a wide-ranging series of interviews conducted in 1999-2000 between the then-centenarian and his former assistant and associate of over thirty years, Riccardo Dottori. These ten 'dialogues' distill and situate Gadamer's philosophy in the context of what has arguably been the bloodiest century in human history. In the course of the interviews, Gadamer addresses, often critically, the work of a wide variety of philosophers, including Heidegger, Nietzsche, Jaspers, Popper, Vico, Habermas, Rorty, and Derrida. He also elaborates on German philosophy during the Nazi Period and in one of the most fascinating conversations, we are treated to a glimpse of Gadamer's personal perspective on the question of Heidegger's Nazism, including a discussion of the political influence that the great philosopher's wife, Elfriede, had on him, which tends to contradict most other published accounts. Perhaps the most accessible expression of Gadamer's life and work in English today" (Publisher's blurb). A book that illuminates the darkness of our time, radiates with incandescent brilliance, and represents one of the best introductions to the work of possibly the greatest philosopher of the 20th century since Martin Heidegger. Some would go so far as to say that while Heidegger was profoundly original, it was Gadamer, who lived to be 102, who achieved true wisdom. An absolute "must-have" title for Hans Georg Gadamer collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 478 pages. Landmark biography on subject. One of the finest intellectual biographies of our time. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original by a University Press. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Jean Grondin's "Hans-Georg Gadamer" in a felicitous English translation. The very first full-length biography on Gadamer. "One of the greatest philosophers of our era. He was also at the center of some of the century's darkest, most complex historical events, for he chose to remain in his native Germany in the 1930's, neither supporting Hitler nor actively opposing him, but negotiating instead an un-political position that allowed him to continue his philosophical work. In this magisterial book, Jean Grondin appraises Gadamer's life and achievement. Drawing on countless interviews with Gadamer and his contemporaries, Gadamer's personal correspondence, and extensive archival research, Grondin traces Gadamer's life as an academician and the development of his ideas, placing them in the context of his times. He sheds light on the genesis and accomplishment of Gadamer's major opus, 'Truth And Method', the bible of modern-day hermeneutics. And he addresses the question of Gadamer's attitude and actions amid the catastrophe of Nazi Germany, painting a balanced portrait of a scholar who tried to preserve German culture and tradition in the face of an invasive menace" (Publisher's blurb). One of the best introductions to the work of possibly the greatest philosopher of the 20th century since Martin Heidegger. Some would go so far as to say that while Heidegger was profoundly original, it was Gadamer, who lived to be 102, who achieved true wisdom. Gadamer, Hans-Georg (Translated by Chris Dawson)
Praise Of Theory: Speeches And Essays
Imprint: New Haven, CT, Yale University Press, 1998
Edition: First Edition
Binding:

,
With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 185 pages. Landmark collection of speeches and essays. One of the most important books on the role of science and technology in our time. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are several. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only by a University Press. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Hans-Georg Gadamer's "Praise of Theory" in a felicitous English translation. Ten essays that explore important philosophical issues. Edited and translated with an illuminating Introduction by Chris Dawson as part of the Yale Studies In Hermeneutics. "Gadamer brings into sharp focus his thoughts on such topics as the power of language, the social role and influence of science, and the idea of reason" (Publisher's blurb). Should science be regulated by ethical considerations? A growing number of thinkers, especially in America, believe that the answer is a definitive "Yes", out of justified concern that science's expansion and dominance in contemporary culture are unprecedented events since the beginning of time itself, and if left unfettered (such as AI development), will supersede the idea of humanity altogether. Gadamer is a philosopher, that is to say, someone who lives through thinking about what is and what they ought to be at the same time. The gist of his provocative and thoughtful argument is that the "theoretical pursuit of truth is valuable for its own sake and that it is devalued when pursued explicitly for practical purposes". Hence the book's title. That would be a more complex and nuanced "Yes" and "No" to cloning, stem-cell research, and other deeply contentious issues. The essay, "Isolation As A Symptom of Self-Alienation", is one of the single greatest essays Gadamer has ever written. He has never had any use for thinkers who yearn for a nostalgic return to the past (even if there are very few contemporary philosophers whose command of Greek thought and the whole history of philosophy can match his own). The Relevance Of The Beautiful And Other Essays
Imprint: Cambridge, England, Cambridge University Press, 1986
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 191 pages. Retrospective collection of essays. One of the greatest books of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original by a University Press. The First Edition is now rare. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Hans-Georg Gadamer's "The Relevance of The Beautiful And Other Essays" in a felicitous English translation. His greatest essay on aesthetics, developed further by eleven other pieces, especially his critique of Immanuel Kant's "Critique of Judgment". Gadamer's aesthetics are consistent with, and a significant expansion of, his hermeneutics: He asserts that art is meaning that must be experienced, NOT deciphered - which is an arresting and original notion about hermeneutics itself - by both the artist/creator and the audience-recipient/lover of art. The fundamental aspect of the aesthetic experience, whether it be of literature, poetry, painting, music, or even architecture is that the reader, viewer, or listener experiences the work of art as if for the very first time, that it feels as if the work is addressed specifically to oneself, and that this amounts to nothing less than a life-changing event. Because he sees it as meaningful, Gadamer re-defines art as something that necessarily exists outside of and beyond historical space and time. At the same time, however, Gadamer "demonstrates the continuing importance of such hermeneutic concepts as imitation, truth, symbol, and play for our appreciation of contemporary art, and thereby establishes its continuity with the Western tradition" (Publisher's blurb). Gadamer's radical perspective clearly repudiates materialist-, technology-, identity politics-, and entertainment-premised aesthetics. And while he questions the very idea of the avant-garde as well as popular art, Gadamer's aesthetics ultimately "revitalizes our understanding of contemporary art" (Robert Bernasconi). There is no other modern critic or philosopher who has had a more compelling understanding of the centrality ("relevance") of art. We have other pressing life issues that we feel we can barely address let alone surmount. So we, thinkers and laymen alike, have consigned art to the realm of "luxury" as opposed to "necessity" as a matter of convenience. But such consignment impoverishes us. Gadamer proposes a philosophy of life as having an active notion of "surplus" in order for it to be worth living, that life-as-surplus is not an unattainable luxury but an existential necessity. An absolute "must-have" title for Hans-Georg Gadamer collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Presents John Kenenth Galbraith's "How To Get Out of Vietnam". A classic. The great economist/intellectual's incisive analysis of the American involvement in Vietnam: Why it was doomed to fail (because no superpower has ever won against an insurgency that has broad popular support), and what should be done that is in the best interest of both the besieged country and America (pull out, implement democratic reforms, minimize corruption, and introduce other economic and political reforms in tandem with an aggressive military offensive that demonstrates America's willingness to show its resolve). Does all this feel like deva ju? It does because America, now the only superpower left, apparently still has not learned the lesson of Vietnam. With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 606 pages. Landmark study on subject. One of the most important literary and cultural texts of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Marjorie Garber's "Vice Versa: Bisexuality And The Eroticism of Everyday Life". Published to enormous critical acclaim by such self-proclaimed bisexuals as Gore Vidal. A prescient, stupendous achievement. "Garber's erudite, provocative study of bisexuality challenges the easy polarities of heterosexual and homosexual, straight and gay. A Harvard professor of English, she argues that bisexuality can be a mature, adult, sustainable way of living one's sexual life. Instead of being a third category, or a period of confusion, oscillation, and experimentation, as is often supposed, bisexuality, in her theory, reveals human sexuality to be a continuum, a process of growth and transformation. Many readers will be intrigued by her candid look at the erotic and romantic lives of dozens of notables identified here as bisexual: Georgia O'Keeffe, Cary Grant, John Maynard Keynes, Laurence Olivier, blues singers Bessie Smith and Gertrude Rainey, painter Larry Rivers, Virginia Woolf, John Cheever, Harlem Renaissance poet Claude McKay, rock star Kurt Cobain, among others. Garber devotes chapters to androgyny, marriages between bisexuals, sexual-conversion narratives, bisexual love triangles, with close analyses of bisexual themes in Henry James, James Baldwin, Anne Rice's vampire fiction, and movies like 'Basic Instinct' and 'Personal Best' " (Publisher's blurb). "One of the key purposes of studying bisexuality is not to get people to 'admit' they are bisexual but rather to restore to them and the people they have loved the full, complex, and often contradictory stories of their lives" (Marjorie Garber). An absolute "must-have" title for Marjorie Garber collectors. This title is a contemporary classic. Garcia, Tristan (Translated by Marion Duvert And Lorin Stein)
Hate: A Romance
Imprint: New York City, NY, Faber & Faber/Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2010
Edition: First Edition
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 260 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most sensational literary debuts of the decade. Review Copy. Review Material laid-in. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. The brilliant book design/presentation by Marian Drukman, which features Andy Warhol's masterpiece, "Querelle", is just one more reminder why even a paperback is superior to an e-book. Presents Tristan Garcia's "Haine" in a felicitous English translation by Marion Duvert and Lorin Stein, the former Editor of The Paris Review. A controversial first novel that took the French literary world by storm and won the Prix de Flore. "Tristan Garcia uses sex, friendships, and love affairs to show what happens to people when political ideals (Marxism, gay rights, sexual liberation, nationalism) come to an end. As Elizabeth Levallois, a cultural journalist, looks back on this decade and on the ravages of the AIDS epidemic in Paris, a drama unfolds, one in which love turns to hate and fidelity turns to betrayal, in both affairs of the heart and politics. With great verve and ingenuity, Garcia lays claim to an era that promised freedom as never before, and he paints an indelible, sharp, but sympathetic portrait of intellectuals lost in the Age of MTV" (Publisher's blurb). Despite its subject's proximity and newsworthy relevance to our time, it is indeed a historical novel-of-sorts, a "romance", and remarkable as such, because the young author was barely an infant when the period and events he writes about with such candor and immediacy unravelled (hence its sensational reception in France). He could not have known any of what transpired first-hand in the way that Edmund White, for example, intimately did, when he wrote "The Beautiful Room Is Empty" (1988) and "Farewell Symphony" (1997). But then again, Tristan Garcia is self-evidently prodigious: Born in 1981, he attended the Ecole Normale Superieure Paris, where he specialized in philosophy. He published a book-length philosophical account, "The Image", in 2007, at the tender age of 26, and then "Hate", at the age of 29. An absolute "must-have" title for Tristan Garcia collectors. This is a Review Copy. The Review Material is laid-in. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only Review Copy of the First American Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by David R. Godine: Regular-sized volume format. Blue cloth boards with gilt titles embossed on spine, as issued. Text by William H. Gass. Brown-and-blue slipcase. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents William H. Gass' "On Being Blue: A Philosophical Inquiry". His brilliant and beautifully written essay on the particular color. Novelist, short-story writer, literary critic, essayist, poet, philosopher, and translator, William H. Gass has written one of the definitive books on the color blue: Its meanings, interpretations, and uses by the cultures that see it, respond to it, and define what it means. Gass has pulled off in literature what Yves Klein, the artist most closely identified with the color, pulled off in modern art. If red were a human being, he (or she) would be a lover. If blue, he (or she) would be, according to Klein and Gass, an artist. Which is also the idea that the late great Polish film director Kieslowski explored in "Three Colors: Blue", the first film of his masterpiece-trilogy. He probably never heard of Gass, but his heroine is very much a Gass-like character: A woman, who is a composer, who is forced to confront her genius and calling after a tragic event (and after years of avoidance and denial) in order to be fully human and truly free. An absolute "must-have" title for William H. Gass collectors. This is a copy of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen on the title page by the author: "[Number] 3 William H. Gass". This title is a great book. This is one of few copies of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Gass, William H.
Tests Of Time: Essays
Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 2002
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 320 pages. The author's seventh collection of literary essays. One of William H. Gass' finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents William H. Gass' "Tests of Time: Essays". Fourteen masterly essays on the author's lifelong concerns: The nature of literature, the role of narrative and storytelling, the importance of form in all of the arts, and above all, the point of writing at all. As expected from Gass, he approaches his literary subjects inclusively, from all possible and fertile angles, the aesthetic as well as the ethical, the philosophical, the socio-cultural, and where relevant and germane, even the political. His essays on Salman Rushdie and the death sentence hanging over his head at the time of the fatwa (still technically in place as it was never rescinded by the Ayatollahs) as well as American society's predilection for literary lists of the great works are models of reflection, explored by the author with grace, intelligence, and penetrating insight. "A high-wire act of thinking and writing that produces what Vladimir Nabokov once called 'an indescribable tingle of the spine' " (Publisher's blurb). For Gass, writing IS thinking: While one cannot write without being able to think first, one writes in order to understand, refine, focus, and finally, change one's way of thinking. He does the same for us, his grateful readers. An absolute "must-have" title for Willam H. Gass collectors. This title is a contemporary classic. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Bologna, Italy by Editore Damiani to the highest standards. In glossy pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents, in its collectible Limited Edition format, Tierney Gearon's "Alphabet Book". Her most enchanting and triumphant creation thus far, a fantasy-inspired re-imagination of the classic children's alphabet book. "Los Angeles photographer Tierney Gearon has gained critical acclaim for her intense, colorful photographs that feature her children as subjects. Her debut in 2001 was quite controversial, when two nude photographs of her sons were included in the 'I Am A Camera' Exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery London. Her new Artist Book takes the form of a children's alphabet book: Each letter of the Roman alphabet is illustrated with a photograph that animates the letter. A is for 'Airplane Adventure', B is for 'Bear Boy', C is for 'Clown Car', and so, delightfully, on. At once an inventive photobook and an enchanting 'take' on the children's alphabet book, this volume is Gearon's most charming work to date" (Publisher's blurb). Gearon has more in common with the equally radiant and optimistic imagery of Cig Harvey than she does with Sally Mann, whose darker vision of childhood and family has been immensely influential. Gearon and Harvey, both much younger women photographers themselves, indirectly acknowledge Mann's looming presence (as it were) by moving in the exact opposite direction. Their ineffably beautiful work has been rewarded with enormous and well-deserved success. An absolute "must-have" title for Tierney Gearon collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Slipcased Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the accompanying color print. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in pink pen-marker on the title page by Tierney Gearon. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with a 10 X 7 inch original color print that is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in matching pink pen-marker on verso by the artist/photographer. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Limited Slipcased Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online command as much as $900, or double the publisher's original list price. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 27 color plates, 1 original color print. One of the most brilliant American photographers of our time. A flawless collectible copy. Its admirers include Jean-Paul Sartre, who wrote a 500-page philosophical and literary study of the writer, "Saint Genet", as well as Michel Foucault (who consciously adopted Genet's ascetic bald head for himself), and Edmund White, who wrote Genet's 500-page biography in English. From another great admirer: "Only a handful of 20th-century writers, such as Kafka and Proust, have as important, as authoritative, as irrevocable a voice and style" (Susan Sontag). An absolute "must-have" title for Jean Genet collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition of 500 copies, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page. This is the 1949 Leatherbound Variant of the Limited Edition. This title is a great book. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and despite its imperfection (visible wear on cover tips and lower spine, caused by age as well as some use) is still in fine condition overall: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: This is the pebble-grained Red-Dyed Morocco Leatherbound Variant Edition. The other variant was bound in plain brown cloth boards only, and is much more common as such. The book has NOT been retouched or re-bound, as the latter would have destroyed the key attraction of the edition: Cocteau's gilt portrait-drawing of Genet on the cover, which remains radiant. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JEAN GENET TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Genet, Jean (Translated by Bernard Frechtman)
The Screens: A Play In 17 Scenes
Imprint: New York City, NY, Grove Press, 1962
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 201 pages. The author's most ambitious play. One of the greatest plays of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited print run as hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Jean Genet's "The Screens" in a felicitous English translation by Bernard Frechtman. Set amid the Algerian War and with a mammoth cast of fifty. The play's complex structure and controversial subject matter ensured that it would be only occasionally produced even in France, and it had not yet been produced there at the time of the book's American publication. "Only a handful of 20th-century writers, such as Kafka and Proust, have as important, as authoritative, as irrevocable a voice and style" (Susan Sontag). Genet is one of very few great writers who also wrote great plays. Indeed, it is hard to think of any other major novelist or intellectual who has pulled off what Genet has with his ground-breaking works for the theatre. An absolute "must-have" title for Jean Genet collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and despite its imperfection (price-clipped) is still in fine condition overall: Every internal page is clean, crisp, and bright. It is priced accordingly. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JEAN GENET TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Germain, Julian (Photographer/Author) & Whiteley, Michael (Contributor)
In Soccer Wonderland: A Fan's Vision Of Football With A Fan's Souvenir Football Stamp Album
Imprint: London, England, Booth-Clibborn Editions, 1994
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 168 pages. Collection of photographs with accompanying text on subject. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. It comes with a copy of the "In Soccer Wonderland" Souvenir Football Stamp Album, which was originally issued with the book and is now rare. A brilliant production by Julian Germain and Why Not Associates: Oversize-volume format. Glossy pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Julian Germain. Germain's text is beautifully and movingly written, an autobiography of a fan's obsession that serves as a prism of his life. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Hong Kong to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Originally shown at the exhibition of the same name held at The Photographer's Gallery London in 1992. Presents Julian Germain's "In Soccer Wonderland". One of the most unusual sports photography books ever published. With a design that flawlessly captures the vibrancy, dynamism, and sheer excitement of the game through the juxtaposition of Julian Germain's contemporary photographs and text with graphics, layout, doublespreads, vintage photographs, souvenirs, trading cards, head dolls, trophies, and other soccer memorabilia. The British, European, and Latin-American fanaticism about soccer, which has made it the world's greatest sport, is the subject of the book, and it is truly wonderful indeed (the title is an allusive homage to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"). "Germain is a pioneer of the contemporary photo-collage book, whereby different types and generations of the photograph are combined to make a pluralist genre of photobook" (Martin Parr and Gerry Badger). Parr and Badger are idiosyncratically (and quite dogmatically) opinionated about their own passion for photography books. But their inclusion of "In Soccer Wonderland" is a sure goal. Julian Germain's images leap off the page with infectious spontaneity, and his book should delight and dazzle not just soccer fans, but all lovers of great photography books. An absolute "must-have" title for Julian Germain collectors. This title is a great photography book. It comes with a pristine copy of the Stamp Souvenir Album, which was originally issued with it, but is now virtually impossible to find. As far as we know, this is the only set of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing and Souvenir Album available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. A rare set thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates. All 24 stamps are encased in their original glassine sheet. "In Soccer Wonderland" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant British photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. Gessen, Masha
The Future Is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia
Imprint: New York City, NY, Riverhead Books, 2017
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 515 pages. Book-length account on subject. One of the most valuable books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly copies that are signed on a tipped-in page. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Masha Gessen's "The Future Is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia". The single best book on Putin's Russia, by the American biographer of Vladimir Putin. "Reveals how, within a generation, Russia surrendered to a virulent and invincible autocracy. Gessen's understanding of the events and forces that have wracked Russia is unparalleled" (Publisher's blurb). The title is deliberately provocative: Russia is NOT yet a full-fledged totalitarian state like the former Soviet Union. But that is no consolation for the fact that it is headed back in that direction (hence the title). Right now, it is only a full-fledged mafia state, ruthlessly run by Putin, with all power and wealth concentrated in his hands and his cabal of oligarchs, who are all, every single one of them, mafioso types. They are not just corrupt, they have been able to plunder Russia by keeping her people lashed to a nationalist agenda that has now spread as an ideology throughout the world, including, of course, the United States, where a significant number of Americans openly admire Putin. Putin is, more accurately, an authoritarian-dictator figure, who has murdered his enemies, critics, journalists, and anyone else in his way with impunity - and, as Gessen describes in meticulous detail, with the tacit or explicit support of his people. A murderous thug like President Duterte (who deeply admires Putin) has done exactly the same thing in the Philippines, which is a failed state, not just a failed democracy, condemned, like Russia, to succumb to authoritarianism because of its history and culture. It is important to make a distinction between failures: All of the Philippines' neighbors are failed democracies (Indonesia and Thailand as well as Burma) precisely because they have always been military regimes all along whereas partly because of American interventions in the past, the Philippines has tasted real democracy, and therefore knows better. That it gives in anyway to Fascist longings and tendencies is a failure of statist will, and if it ever fell to the resurgent Left, it will become a totalitarian state. Trump (who also admires, and may be beholden to, Putin) is merely, but dangerously, a dictator-wannabe. An absolute "must-have" title for Masha Gessen collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (on the day of the National Book Award) in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "Masha Gessen NYC Nov. 14, 2017". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as many copies available online are. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the lovely NBA Awards Night Souvenir Program. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, placed, and NBA Awards Night dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the National Book Award in 2017 for "The Future Is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia". One of the most brilliant writers of our time. A fine copy. Ben Gest: Photographs
Imprint: Chicago, IL, The Renaissance Society At The University Of Chicago, 2006
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 80 pages. Exhibition Monograph. The single most important book on the photographic art of Ben Gest. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Ben Gest and Jason Pickleman: Oversize-volume format. Khaki cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Ben Gest. Essay by Catherine M. Soussloff. Interview with the artist by Hamza Walker. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition held at the Renaissance Society of the University of Chicago in 2006. Presents Ben Gest's "Photographs". Digitally-assembled imagery that aspires to change the current "conversation" between photography and painting (whereby the former now dominates the latter) by adopting painting's spatial perspective to arrive at a new way of creating, not just taking, photographs. "Captures his lone sitters at the chance interstices of deep reflection, when the self dwells in thought. The construction of the self as it happens before Gest's camera serves to question the construction of that self in reality. Gest uses digital photography to monumentalize photography's ability to capture such fleeting moments. Each photograph is seamlessly constructed from hundreds of digital images of the sitter and their surroundings. The photographs' initial straightforward appearance can only be maintained at a cursory glance. Gest's subtle and not-so-subtle exaggerations of proportion and perspective quickly betray the images as Mannerist constructions" (Publisher's blurb). With their static character, the photographs recall the ground-breaking work of Philip-Lorca DiCorcia (achieved by Gest using elaborate digital manipulation rather than elaborate actual production) yet have a contemplative, thoughtful quality all their own. Individually and cumulatively, they remind us of the necessity of pressing the "pause" button, especially those of us who routinely go about our affluent, hectic social lives. An absolute "must-have" title for Ben Gest collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Ben Gest. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. He signed on top of the page, making it even more prominent. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or command unheard-of prices because the book is scarce. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus.
