Everybody I Ever Met In L.a.
Imprint: Santa Fe, NM, Just One Guy Press, 2008
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 64 pages. The artist/photographer's second collection. One of the most beautiful photography books of the decade. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 20 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with the Limited Edition. A brilliant production by Jonathan Hollingsworth: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial aquamarine cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted on the recessed center and titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Jonathan Hollingsworth. Original 3.5 X 4.5 inch color print mounted, encased in its own folio, and laid into the box. Bright yellow cloth clamshell box. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its Deluxe Edition format, Jonathan Hollingsworth's "Everybody I Ever Met In LA". Collection of portrait-cum-text photographs of everybody he ever met in Los Angeles in the most collectible edition possible. The rogues' gallery of memorable people are all here, committed to posterity by Hollingsworth in a singular way: Each of the portraits is of Hollingsworth as his subject, a brilliant inversion of Cindy Sherman's by-now-familiar approach. In all of Sherman's transformative portraits, we never ever forget that we are looking at Cindy Sherman, the artist "expressing" herself. In all of Hollingsworth's portraits, he has so thoroughly immersed himself in his subjects' lifestyles, wardrobe, furniture, and other pertinent personal details that we do forget we are looking at him in various guises. Sherman re-defined the photographic portrait by making us keenly aware that every such portrait is ultimately a self-portrait. Hollingsworth beautifully builds on that insight by aiming for and largely succeeding at a Zelig-like effect: The Self-As-Others. Everybody he ever met in LA is a hysterically unforgettable subject because Hollingsworth was determined to capture them as faithfully as possible. Using himself to do so makes his attempt both poignant and witty, tender and funny. An absolute "must-have" title for Jonathan Hollingsworth collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 20 numbered and signed copies, indicated/numbered as such on the Front Limitation Page (Number 1, the very first one). It is very prominently and beautifully numbered, signed, and dated (in the year of publication) in metallic-silver pen-marker by the photographer: "Jonathan Hollingsworth 1/20 2008". It comes with an original 3.5 X 4.5 inch color print variant of the cover image, also very prominently and beautifully numbered, titled, signed, and dated in black pen on verso: "Jonathan Hollingsworth 2008 'Like, totally' 1/20". It is the first of two print choices of the Deluxe Edition. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the Deluxe Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 45 color plates, 1 original color print. One of the most brilliant American artist/photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. What We Think Now: Young People's Response To The U.s. Involvement In Iraq
Imprint: Santa Fe, NM, Jonathan Hollingsworth/Samhwa Printing Company, 2006
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. Unpaginated. Debut collection of color photographs. One of the most important photographic debuts of our time. Limited Edition of 1000 copies. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Jonathan Hollingsworth: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the spine, as issued. Photographs by Jonathan Hollingsworth. The "text-messages" in all of the photographs were conceived and written down by participating American youths from all walks of life. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Korea to the highest standards. In publisher's original shrinkwrap. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Jonathan Hollingsworth's "What We Think Now". Collection of portrait-cum-text photographs. The concept is arrestingly and deceptively simple: Hollingsworth went around the state of California (he was based in Los Angeles at that time) to ask young people not if they were willing to pose for a photograph (which seemingly every other young person in California is asked) but to pose with their handwritten views about the American involvement in Iraq, as if they were sending one of their electronic "text-ings". Hollingsworth is not a polemicist. Indeed, no one will be satisfied with the messages that the kids thoughtfully wrote down (using a standard-size, pristine-white cardboard and black pen provided by the photographer), whether for or against the war that will undeniably define at least the first half of the 21st century. Hollingsworth has deftly combined in one image not one but three crucial visual elements: The portrait, the rally placard (in effect, the 1960's), and the electronic text message (in effect, the new century). His attempt is simply motivated: Why don't we ask what young people think? After all, they have much more vested in this war emotionally than any of us because they will have to live with its consequences much longer than any of us will? Hollingsworth has done just that, and his collection is stunning in its simplicity, moving in its power, and heartbreaking in its beauty: The kids are "speaking" to us through the messages they hold up, but they remain mute presences, a photographic message in itself of their powerlessness. An absolute "must-have" title for Jonathan Hollingsworth and contemporary art photography collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in pen on the title page by the photographer: "Jonathan Hollingsworth 2006". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and publication-year dated copy of the Limited Edition available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 40 color plates. One of the most brilliant American artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JONATHAN HOLLINGSWORTH TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). Homans, Jennifer (Author); Balanchine, George; Stravinsky, Igor & Other Subjects
Apollo's Angels: A History Of Ballet
Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 2010
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 645 pages. Book-length account on subject. One of the best books on ballet ever written in our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Jennifer Homans' "Apollo's Angels: A History of Ballet". Her deeply moving history of ballet. For Homans, ballet is a metaphor for art itself. Ballet is not dance. Anyone can dance, which is about life's vitality. Ballet demands the exact, mediated opposite: Precision, rigor, purity. In a word, art. Ballet - art - is about transcendence: The high leap we identify with ballet is transcendence itself, about a higher and exalted state of being that we often call grace. "Grace" is now undervalued and rarely invoked in both demotic and hieratic discourse. There is no grace, and a lot of vulgarity, for example, in contemporary culture as well as Ivory Tower academe. Like all great histories, "Apollo's Angels" makes a larger point: A culture that does not have a notion of transcendence is an inferior one, and will not have an enduring legacy. Often described as "Dionysian", "Le Sacre du Printemps" ("The Rite of Spring"), the sublime Nijinsky/Stravinsky collaboration that radically changed the course of ballet, is instead "Apollonian", the re-presentation of primitive trance-ritual through ballet's highly formalized movements, steps, and gestures. The virgin sacrifice in "Le Sacre du Printemps" is the primal version of the sacrifice in "Swan Lake" (and countless other ballets) that the prima ballerina-heroine makes. An absolute "must-have" title for Jennifer Homans and ballet aficionado/collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. Selected as one of the Ten Best Books of 2010 by The New York Times. One of the most brilliant American critic/writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 1400060605.

A Long Way Down

Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 333 pages. The author's fourth novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Nick Hornby's "A Long Way Down". His darkest and in many ways, wisest novel. "In four distinct and riveting first-person voices, Nick Hornby tells a story of four individuals confronting the limits of choice, circumstance, and their own mortality. This is a tale of connections made and missed, punishing regrets, and the grace of second chances. Intense, hilarious, provocative, and moving, a novel about suicide that is, surprisingly, full of life" (Publisher's blurb). Nick Hornby's pulse on contemporary life is infallible, his humane-ness authentic, and both are especially evident in the suicidal reflections of his characters. Here is Martin: "Nearly every single time, the coroner says the same thing: 'He took his own life while the balance of his mind was disturbed'. And then you read the story about the poor bastard: His wife was sleeping with his best friend, he'd lost his job, his daughter had been killed in a road accident some months before. Hello, Mr. Coroner? I'm sorry, but there's no disturbed mental balance here, my friend. I'd say he got it just right" (Nick Hornby). An absolute "must-have" title for Nick Hornby collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Nick Hornby. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. Nick Hornby Songbook
Imprint: San Francisco, CA, McSweeney's Books, 2002
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 147 pages. The author's collection of essays and prose-poems on music. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Marcel Dzama and Alysha Naples: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Text by Nick Hornby. Original art by Marcel Dzama. CD containing 11 selections attached on the inside back endcover. Printed on archival stock paper in Iceland to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Nick Hornby's "Songbook". An instant hit. Still the best book on popular music ever written in our time, by an ardent fan who is also a brilliant writer. With the exception of Marcel Dzama's "The Berlin Years" (which is an Artist Book), this is also the single best book published by McSweeney's. Highly personal and idiosyncratic, Hornby is singularly qualified to write a book about popular music, having written the novel, "High Fidelity", which became the basis of a fine film (with John Cusack). He has also written music criticism for The New Yorker Magazine. The personal essays on music in "Nick Hornby Songbook" pop off the page with the immediacy and passion of an artfully arranged mixed tape. But then, who better to riff on his favorite songs than the author of that literary music-lover's delight, "High Fidelity"? "And mostly all I have to say about these songs is that I love them and want to sing along to them and force other people to listen to them and get cross when these other people don't like them as much as I do" (Nick Hornby). Apart from the indispensable accompanying CD, Hornby's pitch-perfect prose is also enhanced by the quirkily and indelibly beautiful illustrations of the Canadian artist Marcel Dzama. An absolute "must-have" title for Nick Hornby and Marcel Dzama collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Nick Hornby. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism in 2003, the first book by McSweeney's nominated in the hotly contested category by one of the most prestigious literary award bodies in America. Winner of the E. M. Forster Award from the Academy of Arts and Letters. Two of the finest writer/artists of our time. A fine collectible copy. First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 400 pages. Massive Biography-Cum-Monograph. The single most important book on the photographic art of Horst. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Horst and Susan Eisenman: Oversize-volume format. Gray cloth boards with metallic-silver titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Horst. Text by Valentine Lawford. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents "Horst: His Work And His World". Which are, in his case, inseparable and mutually beneficial. Here are the photographer's finest and most representative work over a lifetime of indefatigable work, immense success, and international fame, as told by his close friend, the eminent writer Valentine Lawford. The most brilliant disciple of Hoyningen-Huene, himself the single most important and influential lifestyle and fashion photographer of the 20th century, Horst quickly became world-famous as the man who created, refined, and perfected the Vogue Look. Horst was a restless photographer who tried his hand at everything: Fashion, still life, male and female nudes, portrait, travel, lifestyle, even landscape and architecture. Among the portraits he took, the list is staggering, and owes in part to the fact that he was himself a very handsome man of the world: Coco Chanel, Lisa Fonssagrives, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Ginger Rogers, Luchino Visconti, Barbara Hutton, Noel Coward, Henri Cartier-Bresson (a rare and lovely portrait of the reclusive photographer), Salvador Dali, Gertrude Stein, Jose Clemente Orozco, Jean Cocteau, Jean Marais, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Princess Lee Radziwill (a stunning duo portrait of the legendary sisters), Paloma Picasso, Brooke Shields, Robert Wilson, Truman Capote, Tom Wolfe, Duran Duran, Bianca Jagger, Andy Warhol, Diana Vreeland, Bruce Weber, Karl Lagerfeld, Calvin Klein, and Yves Saint Laurent, among others: A remarkable confluence of the leading figures in the arts, literature, fashion, photography, high society, and celebrity culture. Horst had few rivals among great photographers of the nude, and he is believed to have taken the only full-frontal nude of Steve McQueen, the Hollywood sex symbol/star, that the latter (and now his estate) have never allowed to be published. An absolute "must-have" title for Horst collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, dated, and inscribed in black ink-pen on the half-title page by the photographer and author: "For Anthony Buonfiglio, Horst Valentine Lawford 1988". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient is an accomplished photographer in his own right. Horst and Lawford signed an unspecified number of presentation copies (such as this) to recipients they knew personally. This title is a great photography book. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and despite its imperfection (price-clipped and slight wear on DJ) is still in fine condition: Every single internal page is clean, crisp, and bright. The boards are sharp, no bumping at all. It is priced accordingly. Please note: Copies available online command as much as $550. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 229 plates. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER HORST TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0394521714.

The photographer's finest and most representative work over a lifetime of indefatigable work, immense success, and international fame in one handsome and accessible volume. The most famous disciple and lifetime companion of George Hoyningen-Huene (perhaps the single most important and influential lifestyle and fashion photographer of the 20th century), Horst himself quickly became world-famous as the man who refined and perfected the Vogue Look. Horst was a restless photographer, who tried his hand at just about everything: Fashion, still life, male and female nudes, celebrity portraits, travel, lifestyle, even landmark and architecture. He will be remembered for having produced masterpieces in all of them. Among the portraits he took, the list is staggering and surely owes in part to the fact that he was himself a handsome and charming man of the world: Coco Chanel (one of his iconic portraits), Lisa Fonssagrives (the muse-wife of Irving Penn), Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Ginger Rogers, Luchino Visconti, Barbara Hutton, Noel Coward, Henri Cartier-Bresson (a brilliant portrait of the camera-shy photographer), Salvador Dali, Gertrude Stein, Jose Clemente Orozco, Jean Cocteau, Jean Marais, Jacqueline Kennedy and Princess Lee Radziwill (together in a lovely duo portrait), Paloma Picasso, Brooke Shields, Robert Wilson, Truman Capote, Tom Wolfe, Duran Duran, Bianca Jagger, Andy Warhol, Diana Vreeland (her signature portrait), Bruce Weber, Karl Lagerfeld, Calvin Klein, and Yves Saint Laurent, among countless others, a remarkable confluence of the leading figures in society, the arts, literature, fashion, and photography, High and Low. First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 96 pages. Collection of nudes, presented as an Artist Book. One of the greatest erotic art photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Eikoh Hosoe: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 3 pounds. Cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Eikoh Hosoe. Preface by Yukio Mishima, the greatest Japanese novelist of the 20th century. Mishima famously collaborated with Hosoe on "Ba Ra Kei". Cardboard slipcase with titles printed on black paper that is pasted on the slipcase. Printed in gravure on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper by The Nissha Printing Company in Tokyo, Japan to the highest standards. The gravure reproduction quality is outstanding in every respect. In pink DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Eikoh Hosoe's "Hoyo/Embrace". One of the most stunning and most influential explorations of the nude in the history of photography. Abstracted, choreographed down to the smallest detail, and yet sensuous, made palpably so by exquisite gravure printing, these nudes will not be surpassed. As the title suggests, every image is an embrace, showing a completely nude and physically intimate male and female couple, whose interest to us is the line formed by the erotic proximity of their bodies, which nevertheless remain discrete and never become "as one" (in the overtly sexual sense). They are posing, that is, re-enacting - if are not actually engaged in - sexual intercourse. Hosoe's goal - and genius - is to somehow make us see and think not about sex, but about the power of beauty: That the erotic is ultimately an aesthetic, not a sexual, experience. It's about pleasure, not arousal. An absolute "must-have" title for Eikoh Hosoe collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and placed in pencil on the half-title page by the artist/photographer: "Eikoh Hosoe Tokyo". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great erotic art photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and placed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: While the slipcase is in fragile condition (but it's intact), the book itself is uniformally fine. If both were perfect, this First Edition would command twice as much given its exquisite gravure printing and sheer rarity. A rare signed copy thus. 62 gravure plates. "Ba Ra Kei" and "Kamaitachi" were selected as two of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 132 pages. The artist/photographer's masterpiece, re-presented as an Artist Book. One of the greatest art photography books of our time. Limited Clamshell Box Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with the regular trade edition. The Limited Edition is now rare. An exquisite production by Eikoh Hosoe, Ikko Tanaka, and Tadanori Yokoo: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial cloth boards with blue titles on spine, as issued. Photographs by Eikoh Hosoe. Choreography by Tatsumi Hijikata. Introduction by Shuzo Takiguchi. Poem by Toyoichiro Miyoshi. Clamshell box design by Tadanori Yokoo, the greatest graphic artist/designer of our time. In publisher's original shrinkwrap. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in Tokyo, Japan to the highest standards. In pristine glassine DJ with blue titles on the cover, as issued. Re-presents, in a stunning Limited Edition format, Eikoh Hosoe's "Kamaitachi". The artist/photographer's masterpiece, re-imagined for our time: The book as beautiful object. Originally published in 1969, it has never before been available outside Japan and has been out-of-print for more than 40 years. "Each of the pages is printed as an individual gatefold, each of which opens to reveal a single, stunning black-and-white image. The exterior of each gatefold is printed in a spectacular azure blue. The effect of opening the book is of stepping into an unknown landscape of theater and baroque sensuality. A singular collaboration between Eikoh Hosoe and the founder of Butoh Dance, Tatsumi Hijikata: In 1965, Hosoe and Hijikata visited a small farming village in Northern Japan. Drawing in the villagers as performers and using the rice fields and rural landscape as a theatrical set for an improvisational Butoh performance, Hosoe photographed Hijikata's spontaneous interactions with the landscape and with the people they encountered. Hosoe has called the project 'a subjective documentary', an investigation of tradition and an exploration both personal and symbolic of the convulsions of Japanese society. It was inspired by the legend of the Kamaitachi, a weasel-like demon who haunts the rice fields and slashes those who encounter him" (Publisher's blurb). Hosoe called "Kamaitachi" a subjective documentary because it is his most personal work, a poignant attempt to recapture his wartime childhood in a visual (rather than narrative) way, by capturing Hijikata's choreographic flourish and grace in panoramic landscapes. An absolute "must-have" title for Eikoh Hosoe collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition, indicated as such on the Front Limitation Slip. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in azure-blue ink-pen by Eikoh Hosoe. Hosoe also stamped it with his red "chop". This title is a great art photography book. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: The clamshell box of many copies was very badly damaged in transit because of poor packing on the publisher's part, resulting in splits at the edges, bumps, and crushed corners. Houseman, John
Entertainers And The Entertained: Essays On Theater, Film, And Television
Imprint: New York City, NY, Simon & Schuster, 1986
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 336 pages. Collection of essays on subject. Now considered a late-modern classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents John Houseman's "Entertainers And The Entertained". The legendary American actor/producer/director's reflections on his life in the performing arts: Theater, film, and television. Written as a series of linked essays, John Houseman describes from a personal point-of-view (and as the ultimate insider) the revival of American theater after a period of seemingly irreversible decline, with the rise of film and television. Ever the pragmatist, Houseman did not object to the emergence of Hollywood or television. On the contrary, he embraced the new media and ended up becoming one of entertainment's most iconic figures. In his highly entertaining and insightful book, Houseman weaves several narratives into a seamless whole (Griffith, Hitchcock, and Chaplin as well as Brecht, Orson Welles, Marlon Brando, and John Gielgud). His breakthrough role as the intimidating Law Professor in "The Paper Chase", the film that became a global hit and made Houseman a household word in America, is recounted not as an American success story (which it was, because it brought Houseman enormous fame, riches, and awards), but as a wry and self-deprecating rumination on the unknowable in life and art. "For anyone who loves the performing arts, this is simply the liveliest and best of all books" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for John Houseman collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the front free endpaper by John Houseman. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as copies available online are. This title is a classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and despite its imperfection (publisher's neat stamp on bottom page edge) is still in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 48 pages. Breakthrough collection of photographs interspersed with text. The PhotoLucida Critical Mass Winner of 2011. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Jennifer B. Hudson: Oversize-volume format. Khaki cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted on the cover and titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Jennifer B. Hudson. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Oddi Printing in Iceland to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in a lovely collectible format, Jennifer B. Hudson's "Medic". Her prize-winning and ground-breaking collection. "Explores the tenderness of human relationships during illness and recovery. Each image is beautifully crafted and meticulously staged on hand-built sets. The viewer is transported to a world (the early 20th century) where languishing patients are attached to antique apparatuses and fantastical, imagined medical equipment. The images are interspersed with touching, anonymous personal notes (handwritten or typed), reminiscences of those who have tenderly watched over ailing loved ones. While the visual language is imaginary, the language of love and loss is real. The heartbreak of seeing a loved one suffer and the desire to assuage pain with a tender word and loving touch are universal. Hudson's sensitive approach and compelling aesthetic infuse these subjects with new resonance" (Publisher's blurb). The grid-like rigor of each image and the sequence as a whole heightens (rather than diminishes) the sensation and feeling of pain and suffering of the illness depicted. An absolute "must-have" title for Jennifer B. Hudson (who now goes by Jennifer Thoreson) collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. 20 plates. Hujar, Peter (Photographer) & Fraenkel, Jeffrey; Marks, Matthew (Publisher/Gallerists)
Animals: Photographs By Peter Hujar
Imprint: New York City, NY, Matthew Marks Gallery/Jeffrey Fraenkel Gallery, 2016
Edition: First Edition
First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 8 pages. Rare Peter Hujar collectible set. Pristine copies of the "Animals" Postcard Collection, issued by Matthew Marks Gallery New York, and "Peter Hujar: Photographs" Exhibition Souvenir Poster, issued by Jeffrey Fraenkel Gallery San Francisco. There are eight 4 X 6 Postcards in all, with a loose glassine title page. Each is printed on stiff, archival paper in the United States to the highest standards. The Poster is folded into four equal parts, to show three lovely (and relatively little-known) images by the photographer: "Paul Thek, Nude, Astride Zebra, 1965", "Self-Portrait, Jumping, 1974", and "Draped Male Nude, 1979" . The first two images fold out into the full-page, male-nude poster image. Published over the first decade of the 21st century on the occasion of separate major retrospectives and also, coincidentally, to mark the publication of the first and only book published in Hujar's lifetime, "Portraits In Life And Death" (1976), one of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Twin Palms had also published some of the images in 2005 as "Animals And Nudes". "Unsurpassed (and unsurpassable) male and female nudes as well as portraits of animals that are, collectively, among the finest ever taken in the history of photography. Hujar kept alive the tradition of masterful touch in photography, but reinvented traditional subject matter with his stunning conjunction of aesthetic restraint and emotional openness. He could identify with the animals he photographed to the point of thinking he was creating a self-portrait without irony or sentimentality. And few have seen deeper into the mortality of the nude, whether with joy, arousal, or tribulation, or shifting shades of all three" (Klauss Kertess). The reason Hujar's photographs are sublime is that he did not see his work as being about a subject other than himself, not out of vanity but on the contrary, in all his vulnerability. His portraits are self-portraits, which express and transcend his own body and milieu at the same time, and therefore have the purity and timeless quality that people often refer to when they speak of his work. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, set for Peter Hujar collectors. These copies of the "Animals" Postcard Collection and Folded Exhibition Souvenir Poster are now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. A rare set thus. 8 Postcards, 1 Folded Exhibition Souvenir Poster. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine set. (SEE ALSO OTHER PETER HUJAR TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 82 pages. Exhibition Catalog. Retrospective collection of nudes. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a slipcased softcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Katy Homans: Oversize-volume format. Presents, in one elegant volume, "Peter Hujar: Love & Lust". Brings together Hujar's nudes, mostly male, a few female, plus a lovely formal portrait of the pioneering and iconic gay couple Merce Cunningham and John Cage. "Celebrated and revered by artists, the work of Peter Hujar remains something of a public secret. His photographs dealing with sex and eroticism, made between the years 1969 and 1986, have come to define a certain era in New York. Today, they are widely considered to be his finest and most radical work. Hujar's view of the human body is uninhibited and uncompromising. But his poignant explorations of sexuality and desire also project a universal humanity. Captured in deeply textured black-and-white, these photographs present a view of human relationships that encompasses both the tender and the taboo" (Publisher's blurb). "Looking at his photographs of nude men is the closest I ever came to experience what it is to inhabit male flesh" (Nan Goldin). An absolute "must-have" title for Peter Hujar collectors. Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 96 pages. The photographer's breakthrough debut collection. One of the most beautiful art photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Should not be confused with the Softcover Edition, which was published simultaneously with it. Published in a small and limited print run of a reported 50 copies only. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Peter Mohring: Oversize-volume format. Pale gray cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Peter Hujar. Essay by Susan Sontag. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Peter Hujar's "Portraits In Life And Death". The first and only book published in his lifetime, cut drastically short by AIDS. A perfect book, it opens with a sequence of definitive portraits of Fran Lebowitz, Susan Sontag, Divine, John Waters, William S. Burroughs, and Edwin Denby, among others, portraits of The Living taken in deliberate "death poses", as if each subject is reflecting upon his or her mortality. The collection then, cinematically, cuts to and closes with Hujar's sequence of The Dead, life-like mummies in the catacombs of Palermo, Sicily. Hujar's mummy-portraits are hauntingly "alive" in their evocation of Death, "living portraits of death" (Toni Morrison). Hujar was a Modernist whose closely intertwined themes of vitality/morbidity rejected the pervasive development of his (and our) time, Post-Modernism, which he derisively called "Looks-Like-Art". As a result, he never gained in his lifetime the fame he deserved. The purity of Hujar's portraits bewildered and frustrated the "art elite", given its postmodernist expectations: Why are they so simple and so spare? Hujar now enjoys a global cult following, with collectors forking over serious thousands of dollars for his prints, many of which Hujar had to sell for $100 apiece when he was felled by his "death sentence" illness. The dying Hujar calmly reassured Nan Goldin and Annie Leibovitz, two of his closest fellow artist/friends, that their grief was superfluous because he and his work will be recognized posthumously through these portraits of life/death's "sweet poetry and panic" (Susan Sontag). An absolute "must-have" title for Peter Hujar collectors. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. It is the single most beautiful copy we have ever seen. Please note: Should NOT be confused with the Softcover Edition, which was published simultaneously with it, and is also scarce. Published as a hardcover original of a reported 50 copies only. Copies available online have very serious flaws, but nevertheless command a premium because the book, in any condition, is rare. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. 40 plates. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 0306800381.

The Machine: As Seen At The End Of The Mechanical Age: The Museum Of Modern Art Exhibition Monograph
Imprint: New York City, NY, Museum Of Modern Art, 1969
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 220 pages. Retrospective Exhibition Monograph. One of the greatest books on its subject ever published. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a tiny first print run as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by the Museum of Modern Art: Regular-sized volume format. The boards are, legendarily so, unique: A silkscreen pictorial cover that is archivally embossed/printed on aluminum metal that is hinged at the spine (in order to hold the contents). A sublime work of art in and of itself, it was created by Anders Osterlin from an original photograph by Alicia Legg. Curated with an Essay by K. G. Pontus Hulten, one of the most important art scholars of the 20th century. Art by various contributors, a Who's Who of 20th-century art history. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art New York (MOMA) in 1969, which travelled on to several other major venues. Presents the Museum of Modern Art's "The Machine: As Seen At The End of The Mechanical Age". The single most important and influential retrospective on its subject. Creator and destroyer at a time when its reign is threatened by other tools, here is THE exhaustive and definitive look at The Machine, as it has inspired virtually every major figure of the 20th century (in no particular order) : George Melies, Boccioni, Man Ray, Ribemont-Dessaignes, Max Ernst, Popova, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Fernand Leger, Ettore Bugatti, Alexander Calder, Rene Magritte, Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Hans Bellmer, Tinguely, Claes Oldenburg, Giorgio de Chirico, Andreas Feininger, Alberto Giacometti, George Grosz, Hanna Hoch, Paul Klee, El Lissitzky, Malevich, Bruno Munari, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Kurt Schwitters, Severini, Tobey, Vesnin, Tatlin, and perhaps most important of all, the Bauhaus School. Among others. "The Machine", as an idea and an actual tool, has provoked and stimulated artists since time immemorial. Think only of Leonardo da Vinci's fantastical mechanical inventions, meticulously imagined and drawn by the greatest artist/genius of the Western tradition, many of which since realized in our time. "Visionary" has always meant having a cutting-edge, revolutionary, and "sui generis" view of art (as well as worldview) that visualizes another world we call The Future. An absolute "must-have" title for art book collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of few copies of the Retrospective Exhibition Monograph still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: The fantastic metal cover of this outstanding survey is a work of art that no serious book or art collection could do without. Copies available online command hundreds, even thousands, of dollars. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with photographic plates. Some of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. .

Dmitri Hvorostovsky: Russian Romances
Imprint: London, England, Philips Classics Productions, 1991
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare Dmitri Hvorostovsky collectible item. A pristine copy of his landmark 1991 Philips Classics recording of the seldom-performed songs by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff, signed by Dmitri Hvorostovsky. The very first release on CD. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent releases, of which there are many. The first release is now scarce. Presents Dmitri Hvorostovsky's "Russian Romances". Hair-raisingly powerful and definitive performances by the Siberian baritone in his youthful, second CD release. "I have heard many beautiful voices, but none more beautiful than Dmitri's. He possesses a voice with a quality of velvet that is both a joy to hear and immediately recognizable. Dmitri's technique is impeccable: He has the best breath control I've ever encountered. He is a consummate musician. Add to this his charisma and committed portrayals, and you have a complete singing artist. I expect Dmitri's artistry to go on undiminished, in the tradition of other great baritones, forever" (Renee Fleming). Perhaps there was a premonitory reason that he was so prodigious, finding and attaining his true voice in his early 20's (when most opera singers mature in their 30's at the earliest). The most beloved Classical Music singer-performer of our time, Dmitri Hvorostovsky died on November 22, 2017 at the age of 55, at the absolute peak of his phenomenal career, and after a prolonged, courageous, and heartbreaking struggle with brain cancer. "Words cannot express my anguish that one of the greatest voices of our time has been silenced" (Placido Domingo). An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Dmitri Hvorostovsky collectors. This copy of the Philips Classics CD of "Russian Romances" is very boldly and beautifully signed in gold pen-marker in front by Dmitri Hvorostovsky. It is signed directly on the cover itself. Hvorostovsky's specimen-signature is, quite simply, the fullest and most beautiful we have ever seen: Clean, flowing, elegant. During his regular visits to the city (his American career was launched by The Lyric Opera of Chicago), this charismatic artist signed generously, but none more beautifully as on this copy. This title is a CD classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. The greatest baritone of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DMITRI HVOROSTOVSKY TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Edition: First Edition

Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare Dmitri Hvorostovsky collectible item. A pristine copy of his landmark 1994 Philips Classics recording of the seldom-performed songs by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Alexander Borodin, Anton Rubinstein, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and the eponymous suite by Modest Mussorgsky, signed by Dmitri Hvorostovsky. The very first release on CD. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent releases, of which there are many. The first release is now scarce. Presents Dmitri Hvorostovsky's "Songs And Dances of Death". Hair-raisingly powerful and definitive performances by the Siberian baritone in his youthful CD release with full orchestral accompaniment. "At first, Hvorostovsky's voice seems almost too beautiful; his sound seems too youthful to fill out these narratives. But his concentration and breath control are so sensational that we realize what he's up to: He's spinning us seductively into the spooky world of these songs, where Death converses with the mother of a dying child, a young girl, an old peasant, and dying soldiers. Hvorostovsky modulates his voice and changes his tone with each song" (Robert Levine). This copy of the Delos Classics CD of "Passione di Napoli" is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the CD by Dmitri Hvorostovsky. It is signed directly on the disc itself. Hvorostovsky's specimen-signature is one of the fullest and most beautiful we have ever seen: Clean, flowing, elegant. During his regular visits to the city (his American career was launched by The Lyric Opera of Chicago), this charismatic artist signed generously, such as on this copy.

Hvorostovsky, Dmitri (Performer) & Ilja, Ivari (Pianist/Accompanist)
Dmitri Hvorostovsky: Pushkin Romances
Imprint: London, England, Philips Classics Productions, 2010
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare Dmitri Hvorostovsky collectible item. A pristine copy of his landmark 2010 Delos Classics recording of songs by various Russian composers (in order) : Mikhail Glinka, Alexander Borodin, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Cesar Cui, Nikolai Medtner, Piotyr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Georgi Sviridov, signed by Dmitri Hvorostovsky. The very first release on CD. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent releases, of which there are many. The first release is now scarce. Presents Dmitri Hvorostovsky's "Pushkin Romances". Seventeen songs, "romances", all composed to texts from the works of Alexander Pushkin, Russia's greatest poet. "The composers here define the true meaning of Russian Romance, and have created some of the world's greatest songs. Choosing only romances inspired by Pushkin texts, Hvorostovsky has upped the ante to make a musical statement no other singer has attempted" (Publisher's blurb). "Bringing them all to life is Hvorostovsky's performance: Passionate, brooding, or forceful, in a manner which might be a bit overpowering in less emotional music, but is exactly right for these songs. His dark baritone has lost remarkably little of the sheen that distinguished his 1991 Philips 'Russian Romances' recording" (BBC Music Magazine). The landscape and female nude photographs of an American artist who is better-known as an immensely successful commercial photographer. Like his great predecessors in Tom Baril, among others, Carl Austin Hyatt is an impeccable printer/craftsman/art designer with an American Romantic sensibility. His commitment (after the necessary commercial work is done) is to the majestic American landscape, whose beauty could never quite be exhausted by the photographing eye, and to the female form. Ditto. As produced, these are sublime images, paying homage to Nature and Woman as few contemporary photographers have either the means, technical expertise, and just as important, artistic commitment at their disposal. An absolute "must-have" title for Carl Austin Hyatt collectors. This copy of the Limited Edition is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed, dated, and inscribed in black fountain pen on the front free endpaper by the photographer: "For Paul, All best blessings, Carl Austin Hyatt 4/11/08". Hyoung Tae, Lim (Artist/Photographer) & Jeong Ju, Choi (Contributor)
I See: Photographs By Lim Hyoung Tae
Imprint: Seoul, Korea, Seoul Museum Of Art, 2011
Edition: First Edition
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 35 pages. Exhibition Catalog. Sequence of color photographs. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The book is now rare. It is beautifully produced by the Seoul Museum of Art, with pictorial softcovers, text by Choi Jeong Ju, and stunning color photographs by Lim Hyoung Tae that are reproduced on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Seoul, Korea to the highest standards. The reproduction quality of the images is remarkable for their clarity, rich tonal range, and warmth. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Lim Hyoung Tae's "I See". Conceptual art photography. He appears in every image, situating himself in Nature, a juxtaposition that alludes to his philosophy of "being-towards-death" as "being-returning-to-Nature" (the artist is deeply influenced by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, as indeed, many artists who are obsessed by death and dying are). The simplicity of the photographs belies their rich and complex layered-ness. Like all reflective artists, Lim Hyoung Tae's coolly detached style presents the Ordinary as being transformed and made Extraordinary through the intervention of art. Each image is part of a sequence that is individually and collectively titled "I See". The artist/photographer has also put together a DVD of his work, which is laid-into the book. An absolute "must-have" title for Lim Hyoung Tae collectors. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Exhibition Catalog available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. 12 color plates, 1 DVD. One of the most brilliant Korean artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy. .

Paul Ickovic: In Transit
Imprint: Boston, MA, Odeon Editions, 1977
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. Unpaginated. The photographer's breakthrough debut collection. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Larry Webster: Oversize-volume format. Brown cloth boards with gilt titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Paul Ickovic. Essays by Kathryn Ungerer and Patricia Griffith. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with white and black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Paul Ickovic's "In Transit". One of the most riveting collections of images of people in transit: Passengers on trains, at the train station, in buses, at the bus station, in terminal cafes and restaurants, parks, streets, and in their cars. The subjects were photographed very simply, either standing, walking, or sitting down. The photographs were taken in a wide variety of places: Paris, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New Orleans, Zagreb, Copenhagen, and Cannes, unmistakably demonstrating that the photographer is above all, a traveller-par-excellence, perpetually "in transit". Born in the United Kingdom to Czech parents, Paul Ickovic returned to his homeland as a boy, only to leave again for Canada and Latin America before finally moving to the United States, where he acquired his education and found his calling as a photographer. His very name underwent several transformations in the process: His birth name was Pavel, which became Pablo, and finally, Paul. Given his extremely peripatetic childhood, it is not surprising that Ickovic became a photographer. He practically spent his whole life preparing for his chosen career. Ostensibly about other people on the move, "In Transit" is in fact, Ickovic's brilliant metaphor about himself and all other photographers: They are all travellers, every single one of them. It doesn't just come with the territory; the urge comes from very deep within. We all have only one life to live, but yearn for at least two, the other being the exact opposite of the one we were handed by fate and circumstance. Hence, in Paul Ickovic's case, his Czech roots and heritage (what keeps him "in place") have become his principal subject and resulted in "Kafka's Grave And Other Stories" as well as two other books, "Prague Portfolio" and "Safe Conduct". An absolute "must-have" title for Paul Ickovic collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Paul Ickovic. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and despite its imperfection (slight wear on the DJ spine and corners) is still in especially fine condition: Every single internal page is clean, crisp, and bright. The cloth boards are sharp, NO bumping at all. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 52 duotone plates. One of the finest photographers of our time. A fine copy. . ISBN 0930746015.

Ingalls, Rachel
Be My Guest: Two Novellas
Imprint: New York City, NY, Turtle Bay Books/Random House, 1992
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 238 pages. Retrospective collection of two novellas. One of Rachel Ingalls' finest achievements. The first appearance of the pieces in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Rachel Ingalls' "Be My Guest". Two novellas: "Sis And Bud" and the eponymous "Be My Guest". "Shows her to be as adept as ever at mixing the sinister and the commonplace to create psychological suspense: Two adopted children set out to find their real parents, descending into obsession, incest, and murder. A young woman rescues a boy who claims to be an adult trapped in a man's body" (Kirkus Reviews). Rachel Ingalls is THE bewildering, eternal recluse among great late-modern writers in English. She has never made a public appearance in her fifty-odd-year career as a published writer, and her publishing history is as bewildering as her tales. For devoted reader/collectors, the rules of thumb are fairly simple: a) All of her books first appeared in the United Kingdom, where she has lived since 1964; b) All of them have been issued subsequently in the United States, sometimes under altogether different titles; and c) the American Editions remain eminently collectible, particularly for completists, because she has been served well by her publishers here in terms of both content and production values. One of the greatest storyteller-writers of our time, she is a latter-day Isak Dinesen whose theme is the sublime mystery of human existence. Once started, it is impossible to put down a Rachel Ingalls book. An absolute "must-have" title for Rachel Ingalls collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Turtle Bay Books was a Random House Imprint, and as such, followed the latter's First Edition indications: "First Edition" statement with a number line that begins with the Number 2 (instead of 1). So this is a copy of the true first. Copies available online are subsequent printings. A scarce copy thus. Rachel Ingalls' "Mrs. Caliban" is widely regarded as one of the greatest novels in the English language of the 20th century. One of the finest American writers of our time. A fine copy. Binstead's Safari
Imprint: London, England, Faber & Faber, 1983
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 221 pages. The author's fourth novella. Now considered a late-modern classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Rachell Ingalls' "Binstead's Safari". Her "Africa" novel, set in a lyrically evoked, imaginary Africa, and philosophically, her most unusual (and somewhat underrated) creation. Even more so than in "Mrs. Caliban", she explores in "Binstead's Safari" the felt and real connection human beings have with their animal - as opposed to human - nature, their repressed yet deep ties with the animal kingdom (we are mammals, first and foremost), and with Nature as a whole. The novel's shocking ending would have immediately collapsed in lesser hands. In Ingalls' agile hands, it is a triumph of art and truth over self-deception and false consciousness. As a literary achievement, "Binstead's Safari" is inescapably linked to Isak Dinesen, as homage and as an advance over the work of the one writer who has had the most influence on her. Ingalls, Rachel
Mrs. Caliban
Imprint: London, England, Faber & Faber, 1982
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 125 pages. The author's breakthrough third novel. One of the greatest novels of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the American Gambit Press and Harvard Common Press Editions (which are both lovely in their own right). Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Both the green cloth boards and green-dominant DJ design are in keeping with the novel, which should be the case with ALL book designs, but isn't necessarily so. Presents Rachel Ingalls' "Mrs. Caliban". Her masterly novella-length novel: Shakespearean-inspired fable ("The Tempest") meets Hollywood suspense-thriller to form a singular, seamless whole. While not a doctrinaire feminist at all, Ingalls does have a feminist sensibility: When he dreams, Man reaches for the heights and searches for life elsewhere in outer space. Mrs. Caliban, Woman, plumbs the depths of the sea, and there she finds the erotic and romantic answer to her deepest needs, in the green, tender, loving creature-being, who makes his earthling counterpart wholly inadequate indeed. If "Binstead's Safari", her follow-up novel, underscores our connection as human beings to the animal kingdom, "Mrs. Caliban" imagines a sea-mammal as more humane than his human male counterpart. The novel received the ultimate accolade any writer could hope for: From another great writer, one of Ingalls' most ardent reader/admirers in America: "I loved 'Mrs. Caliban'. So deft and austere in its prose, so drolly casual in its fantasy. But opening up into a deep female sadness that makes us stare. An impeccable parable, beautifully written from first paragraph to last" (John Updike). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 141 pages. Landmark collection of novellas. One of Rachel Ingalls' finest achievements. The first appearance of the pieces in the United States. They first appeared as "Three of A Kind" (1985) in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. The DJ design features a translucent black-and-white photograph by the brilliant American photographer Matt Mahurin. Presents Rachel Ingalls' "I See A Long Journey". Three of her most haunting creations: "I See a Long Journey", "On Ice", and "Blessed Art Thou". "In prose as unself-conscious as a child's, three macabre tales of unspoken fear and longing are spun out: Of a woman tamed to submissiveness by her husband's money and power; of a young girl who cannot imagine life without her lover; and of a priest chosen by the Angel Gabriel to bear his child" (Publisher's blurb). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 300 pages. Retrospective collection of novellas and short stories. Some of Rachel Ingalls' earliest and finest achievements. The first appearance of the pieces in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. "Devoted readers of this perceptive writer will recognize her subtle ability to reveal the most profound observations through seemingly small and ordinary happenings. Imprint: London, England, Faber & Faber, 1986
Edition: First Edition
Binding:

,
With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 205 pages. The author's third collection of novellas. One of Rachel Ingalls' finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the American Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Together with "Mrs. Caliban", it is one of the author's most successful and popular books. Features the brilliant cover art/design by Andrzej Klimkowski. Presents Rachel Ingalls' "The Pearlkillers". Her moving homage to her writer-precursor, Isak Dinesen. The collection includes "Third Time Lucky", "People To People", "Inheritance", and "Captain Hendrik's Story". By design, each tale vividly evokes the often weirdly beautiful and disturbing ("Gothic", so-called) universe of Dinesen - yet each is also marked and inspired by Ingalls' unmistakable tenderness and genius. Rachel Ingalls is THE bewildering, eternal recluse among great late-modern writers in English. The first appearance of the pieces in the United States. They originally appeared in the United Kingdom as "Black Diamond" (1992) and "Days Like Today" (2000). Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only and through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Rachel Ingalls' "Times Like These". Eight, middle- to late-period short stories by a Modern Master of the form. Their publication in the United States is long overdue and most welcome. Here are creepy, unforgettable, near-perfect stories that "pose the same questions: What do people really believe in, where can they put their trust, and why do they continue to hope?" (Publisher's blurb). Ingalls' masterpiece, "Mrs. Caliban", classified as a novel, is really a book-length short story, the novel as a work of distillation, written in impeccable prose, not a single word wasted, and vastly superior to other writers' thousand-page efforts. The same could be said of every piece in this collection, which includes "Last Act: The Madhouse", "The Archaeologist's Daughter", "Somewhere Else", "Correspondent", "Fertility", "Veterans", "The Icon", and "No Love Lost". The way she is able to evoke the senses, notably the sense of smell, through words is unsurpassed. War has a certain odor, and if we can smell trouble, Ingalls makes us smell war in "Veterans", the longest and most beautiful piece in the collection. Rachel Ingalls is THE bewildering, eternal recluse among great late-modern writers in English. She has never made a public appearance in her fifty-odd-year career as a published writer, and her publishing history is as bewildering as her tales. For devoted reader/collectors, the rules of thumb are fairly simple: a) All of her books first appeared in the United Kingdom, where she has lived since 1964; b) All of them have been issued subsequently in the United States, sometimes under altogether different titles such as the present volume; and c) the American Editions remain eminently collectible, particularly for completists, because she has been served well by her publishers here in terms of both content and production values. With "Times Like These", Rachel Ingalls' work also seems suddenly, unexpectedly, and sadly complete: She has not published a new book since "Days Like Today" in the United Kingdom, and there is a sense of an ending with this generous, 316-page volume, which appeared five years later, in 2005. No matter. She will still be remembered as one of the greatest storyteller-writers of our time. She is a latter-day Isak Dinesen whose theme is the sublime mystery of human existence. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. Rachel Ingalls' "Mrs. Caliban" is widely regarded as one of the greatest novels in the English language of the 20th century. One of the finest American writers of our time. A fine copy. Irving, John

Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback

With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 465 pages. The author's fourteenth novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a regular first print run as a hardcover original only. "Autographed Copy" round sticker pasted in front. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents John Irving's "Avenue of Mysteries". Widely described and praised as his "American-immigrant" novel. His protagonist, Juan Diego, is Hispanic. He also makes an epiphanic trip to the Philippines, the former (and only) Asian colony the United States has ever had, where he befriends and becomes close to two Filipino women. Irving pulls this off as a novelist writing at a new peak, combining Dickensian "verisimilitude" realism (an acute sense of life's probabilities) with Irving-esque surreality (an even more acute sense of life's improbabilities that is, by now, identified with him). It sounds relatively easy. In fact, very few novelists succeed in uniting the particular and the universal as convincingly as Irving does at his very best. "Juan Diego got his start in an Oaxacan dump, where he and his sister were self-described 'dump kids'. Their mother Esperanza was a prostitute and cleaning woman, and in 'Avenue of Mysteries', we revisit Esperanza, a pair of Jesuits who affected Juan Diego's life, various circus members, his sister, and others in a series of flashbacks. Having salvaged books in English and Spanish from the dump, Juan Diego taught himself to read and to write. He becomes a successful author. He takes a trip to the Philippines, where he encounters a mother and her daughter, who insist on taking him around. An immersive read that delivers character, humor, and emotion" (Chris Schluep). "A richly detailed, imaginative, and beautiful novel, with a series of events that seem equally bizarre and resoundingly universal. A complex and many-layered novel that covers a lot of intellectual, moral, and emotional ground, but in the end, it is the simplest, saddest, and most wonderful tale of the human condition because it is about what we all fear: Finding people to love and then losing them in the end" (The Fort Worth Star-Telegram). An absolute "must-have" title for John Irving collectors. This Autographed Copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by John Irving. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: John Irving did NOT sign copies in person. A very limited number of pre-signed copies were made available by his publisher. A rare signed copy thus. First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 822 pages. The author's eleventh novel. One of John Irving's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents John Irving's "Until I Find You". Like all of John Irving's novels, long ("Less is not more. More is more") and autobiographical. Unlike all of them, its laser-beam focus (not just emphasis) on pre-pubescent sexuality, the sexual molestation of a boy at the hands, literally, of older women has been dubbed "the narrative of a penis", in the now-infamous review by the brilliant novelist Marianne Wiggins. Once close friends, the two writers no longer speak to each other. "Irving's descriptions are distressing to read, but they force the reader to relate to the characters in a way they would not in most works of fiction" (Calgary Herald). An absolute "must-have" title for John Irving collectors. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Ishiguro, Kazuo
When We Were Orphans
Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 2000
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 336 pages. The author's fifth novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are many. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Kazuo Ishiguro's "When We Were Orphans". A historical novel, with touches of the detective genre, on the author's lifelong theme: The inescapable Past and its near-unbearable weight upon the Present, that is to say, upon our ongoing lives. His evocation of 20th-century China at a liminal and tumultuous time, "Ishiguro has never been one for verbal pyrotechnics, but the unruffled surface of this haunting novel only adds to its emotional power. An extraordinary feat of sustained, perfectly controlled imagination. In Christopher Banks, the author has created one of his most memorable characters" (Simon Leake). Ishiguro himself left Japan at the age of five, young enough to forget yet old enough to re-imagine everything, his very own Japan, what the Nobel Prize Citation aptly describes as his imaginative "aesthetic universe". That is, his often bleak themes are rendered in - made bearable by - his pitch-perfect, austerely elegant prose: "One of the finest prose stylists of our time" (Michael Ondaatje). The Nobel Prize Citation is deeply moving, their 2017 Nobel Laureate is an inspired choice, but another authority sums it up best: "An original and remarkable genius" (The New York Times). The basis of the very fine film adaptation, "The White Countess", written by Kazuo Ishiguro, with Ralph Fiennes and Natasha Richardson in career-peak performances. An absolute "must-have" title for Kazuo Ishiguro collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by Kazuo Ishiguro. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient is named. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed and inscribed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. It is the single most beautiful signed copy we have ever seen. Please note: Copies available online command hundreds of dollars. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Whitbread Prize in 1986 for "An Artist of The Floating World". Winner of the Booker Prize in 1989 for "The Remains of The Day". Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2017. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KAZUO ISHIGURO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0375410546.

Printed on Tri-Pine Velvet Natural 135kg glossy stock paper by Tokyo Inshokan Company to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Yasuhiro Ishimoto's "Toki"/"Moment". Serene, contemplative photographs of earth, water, and sky that evoke both metaphor and memory. Images of leaves on the ground, rain, clouds, gray landscapes of autumn, pristine-white vistas of winter, beverage cans, and footprints in the snow are interspersed with photographs of people in Tokyo's busy streets. The latter are photographed in frenetic motion while the leaves seem to have a "still life" quality about them. Ishimoto's project is a meditation on change captured in one moment that says, "I am still here, I am still alive". "All living things eventually fade away. I thought I understood that years ago, but it was only an intellectual understanding. Now, I am more than 80, confronted with a reality I can no longer escape. Look up and you see clouds, some with magnificent shapes, others fading away to wisps. Look down at a river and you see ripples and strange patterns on the water. These things keep changing all the time. I will keep taking pictures of things that are continually changing, things that show just how strange reality is" (Yasuhiro Ishimoto). "The most beautiful Ishimoto book since 'Chicago, Chicago' " (Stephen Daiter). Yasuhiro Ishimoto died on February 6, 2012 at the age of 90. His stature as "photographer's photographer" will remain secure. An absolute "must-have" title for Yasuhiro Ishimoto collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Yasuhiro Ishimoto. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. The great Japanese photographer's work in two places: Tokyo and Chicago. Through his radical juxtaposition of disparate images, Ishimoto delineates the striking differences between the two cities, both of which he photographed with an acute eye. There is, at the same time, a wonderful and moving sense of "elective affinities" about the imagery because of his lifelong devotion/affection for his adopted city (Chicago), where he studied, developed, and matured as an artist, and his fierce attachment/loyalty to home (Tokyo), where he is revered as a National Artist. Ishimoto donated 200 vintage prints, representing the work of a lifetime, to the Art Institute of Chicago, which now owns the single largest and most important Permanent Collection of his work in the West. Yasuhiro Ishimoto died on February 6, 2012 at the age of 90. His stature as "photographer's photographer" will remain secure. An absolute "must-have" title for Yasuhiro Ishimoto collectors. Juxtaposition of two magnificent sequences: "Hana", his black-and-white flower photographs, and "Meguriau Iro To Katachi", his masterly semi-abstract studies in color. Pursued later in his career, the separate bodies of work show the influence of both the Bauhaus aesthetics that he immersed himself in during his Institute of Design stint as well as the enduring influence of Japanese aesthetics: Rigorous yet vibrant, ethereal yet sensual, cosmopolitan yet natural, all at the same time. Viewed individually and together, "Hana" and "Meguriau Iro To Katachi" represent some of the most beautiful "painterly" photographs one is likely ever to see. The project was inspired, of course, by Dante Aleghieri's "La Divina Commedia", and Jaar shows how Dante's vision of Inferno and Paradiso remain just as relevant more than 700 years later. Being photojournalists, the contributors are at the forefront of human suffering, as it unfolds, and their images show their powerful response to and empathy for those who are in pain, that is to say, the overwhelming majority of people in the world. What is truly more surprising is that they are just as able to see a more hopeful, and for us, the viewers, equally necessary, side to humanity, such as the image of Danish teen-agers swimming joyfully on a beach. Some of the photographers are well-known such as Susan Meiselas and David Turnley. Many are not, and we have Alfredo Jaar to thank for bringing their brilliant work to our attention. "Alfredo Jaar is one of the most uncompromising artists working today. His installations, combining elements of photography, architecture, and theater, and often featuring graphic documentary imagery in the form of back-lit transparencies, explore the complex relationships between developed nations and the so-called Third World. In his work, Jaar tracks the ironies and injustices which characterize those relationships and plays out the systematic pursuit of profit which drives them" (Actar). An absolute "must-have" title for Alfredo Jaar collectors. This title is an art photography classic. As far as we know, this is one of only two copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. 36 plates. Some of the world's finest photojournalists, curated by one of the most important artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy. . ISBN 9170570450.

Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition of the same name held at the Chicago Center For Contemporary Photography, Columbia College in 1980. Presents "Light Touching Silver: Photographs by Joseph D. Jachna". A lovely early guide to the singular art of one of the most remarkable artist/photographers of our time. Throughout his long career, Jachna's desire to photograph Nature, particularly bodies of water, became a powerful instrument that connected him (and us) to the elemental richness of life, and just as important, to metaphorical self-reflection, the outer reality reflecting the inner life. As such, his images have reliably provided a much-needed calming, immersive, and meditative experience. This respite is otherwise impossible to find in contemporary photography, whose imagery is hectic, passive-aggressive, even violent. The title itself is a poetic way of describing what happens during the photographic process, an artisanal event that has always had a metaphorical significance for Jachna: His exploration of physics, our natural state, is finally about metaphysics, our psychological, even philosophical, state of being. This is why despite their ostensible natural subject, most of his prints are "Untitled", flouting the widely-accepted practice of identifying every landscape photograph with a specific place, date, and time. An absolute "must-have" title for Joseph D. Jachna collectors. This title is an art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: None of the copies was sold commercially. Copies available online have serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. 45 plates. One of the most brilliant American photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOSEPH D. JACHNA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. Unpaginated. The artist/photographer's breakthrough debut collection. One of the most brilliant art photography books of the 20th century. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 50 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Bill Jacobson and Jack Woody: Oversize-volume format. The set weighs 5 pounds. Pale gray cloth boards with black titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Bill Jacobson. Short story, "Lost Profile", by Klauss Kertess. Original photographic print laid into the box. Matching pale gray cloth clamshell box. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. In white pictorial DJ, as issued. Presents "Bill Jacobson: 1989-1997". The artist/photographer's dramatic sequence of images that test the boundaries of the portrait by a singular blurring/effacing technique applied to all of the photographs. The images appear to be eerie at first, but as one moves progressively through the complete series (which are grouped into three suites, "Interim Portrait", "Song of Sentient Beings", and "Thought Series"), one cannot help but be deeply moved by the cumulative and overwhelming power of Bill Jacobson's achievement. Jacobson has accomplished nothing less than a re-imagination of every human being as a presence who is also an absence: We are and we are not at the same time. As Ingmar Bergman once said of "Persona", perhaps the greatest film of the 20th century, it is not so much a question of being or nothing ("to be or not to be"). Rather, it is a question of being-as-nothing. Jacobson has explicitly said that the book is one of loss and remembrance, especially of friends and lovers, that is, nothing-ness. The images are deepened rather than effaced by the unusual blurring technique that the photographer has used. "I started taking photographs nearly twenty-five years ago. Since then my work has been an ongoing meditation around desire, loss, and the role of photography as a vehicle for remembrance. My pictures often function as a metaphor for the way the mind works: Simultaneously collecting images while letting others go, fading in the way memories fade, and alluding to the fact that, historically, photographs have faded as well" (Bill Jacobson). An absolute "must-have" title for Bill Jacobson collectors. This copy is Number 50, the very last (and therefore, most valuable) copy of the Deluxe Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the Back Limitation Page. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Bill Jacobson. Laid-in is an original photographic print that is mounted, framed, and protected with a glassine paper overlay. It is also very prominently and beautifully signed, titled, dated, and numbered in pencil on verso by the artist/photographer: "bill jacobson thought series # 712 1993 (twin palms) 50/50". Jacobson deliberately used all-lower-case letters for the inscription. This title is a great art photography book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 52 tritone plates, 1 original print. One of the most brilliant American artist/photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 96 pages. Retrospective collection of color photographs. One of Bill Jacobson's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. A brilliant production by Bill Jacobson: Oversize-volume format. Pristine-white hard boards with black titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Bill Jacobson. Essay by Eugenia Parry. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Bill Jacobson's "Photographs". His color photographs, a companion volume to his breakthrough debut, "Bill Jacobson: 1989-1997", his debut collection of hauntingly beautiful black-and-white portraits. "Bill Jacobson's photographs resist easy identification. They are blurred, diffuse, and atmospheric, depicting only the vague outlines of urban scenes, rural landscapes, and human figures. Enveloped by a dark or light mist, these shadowy forms refute the premise that photographs capture reality and serve as a reliable aid to memory. Instead, his photographs are images of vague recollections and forgotten experiences. They speak of mortality and dissolution, not only of the body but of its surroundings as well. Related to his earlier series from the 1990's, which were direct responses to the AIDS epidemic, they are more open-ended and universal in spirit" (Publisher's blurb). "Most photographs are meant as documents of moments we wish to hold on to forever. My work suggests that these moments, like life itself, are constantly fading into the past" (Bill Jacobson). An absolute "must-have" title for Bill Jacobson collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Bill Jacobson. A Brief History Of Seven Killings
Imprint: New York City, NY, Riverhead Books, 2015
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 688 pages. The author's breakthrough third novel. One of the most sensational literary events of our time. The First Softcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent printings as well as the British Booker Prize Commemorative Edition. Copies of the First Softcover Edition (as well as all other multiple subsequent printings) have the "Booker Prize" Seal on the cover. One of few released just before the October 13, 2015 Booker Prize, this copy of the First Softcover Edition does NOT have the Seal. The First Edition now rare. Presents Marlon James' "A Brief History of Seven Killings". The single greatest "breakthrough" writer from the Caribbean since V. S. Naipaul. As is now well-known, the title is doubly ironic: It spans three decades, and at 688 pages, is not brief at all. At the same time, Bob Marley's life was very brief indeed: While he survived the ferocious attempt on his life, he soon died of cancer at the age of 36. With its cacophony of multiple, anguished voices, the novel is dense yet rewarding, a triumph of linguistic and literary virtuosity. "A great book. Its achievement goes far beyond opening up the terrible moment in the life of a great musician" (The Boston Globe). Marley is not a character in the novel, whose single most brilliant stroke is that the story is told by (and is about) Marley's would-be killers. Marley is instead The Singer, an inescapable presence, whose actual life is telegraphed by Marlon James: Bullet points, as it were, about the single greatest Jamaican figure, a universal icon, who can only be gleaned from a distance, in a feat of novelistic poise. An absolute "must-have" title for Marlon James collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, dated (before publication), and inscribed ("lined") in blue ink-pen on the title page by the author: "Marlon James 10.31.15 'Listen. Dead people never stop talking' ". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The inscription is the novel's first two lines. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Souvenir Program of the event during which his signature was obtained. This title is a great book. This is the only such signed, pre-publication dated, and inscribed ("lined") copy of the First Softcover Edition/First Printing/First State available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies of the First Softcover Edition have the "Booker Prize" Seal on the cover. One of very few copies released before the Booker Prize, this copy does NOT have the seal.
