Klein, Olaf Georg (Translated by Margot Bettauer Dembo)
Aftertime

Imprint: Evanston, IL, Northwestern University Press, 1999
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 115 pages. The author's first novel to be translated into English. One of the finest literary works of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only by a University Press. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Olaf Georg Klein's "Aftertime" in a felicitous English translation. Apocalypse Now. "In Klein's haunting account of a life destroyed by the aftermath of nuclear disaster, a young German woman studying in the USSR is exposed to radiation when a nearby nuclear reactor explodes, contaminating Kiev and its surroundings. Forced to take an oath of silence by Soviet officials who recommend she wait several years before having children, the young woman returns to Germany, where she is reunited with her high-school sweetheart. After she becomes pregnant and miscarries, however, she is gripped by an obsession to carry a baby to term to prove to herself that she was not affected by radiation exposure. Eventually, unable to avoid a second miscarriage, she attempts suicide rather than face the looming specter of slow, painful death. Alternately hopeful and bitter, 'Aftertime' delves convincingly into the psyche of a woman clinging desperately to denial. Klein's nameless heroine movingly recounts her effort to hold back the horrible fate that circumstances have decreed for her" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Georg Olaf Klein collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. William Klein: In And Out Of Fashion

Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 1994
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 254 pages. Landmark collection of fashion and lifestyle photographs. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by William Klein: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 5 pounds. Glossy pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by William Klein. Afterword by Martin Harrison. Stunning endpapers. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Amilcare Pizzi in Milan, Italy to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents William Klein's "In And Out of Fashion". The truly astonishing range of the photographer's fashion and lifestyle work. Complemented and juxtaposed with his unsurpassable street photography. The creator of a style that has been extremely influential just as it has remained completely original, William Klein's approach to fashion is more subdued, but still retains his trademark "in-your-face" aggressiveness, wit, and panache, in stark contrast to the polished, clean, and Minimalist "look" perfected and favored by the School of the great Alexey Brodovitch and his disciples, most notably Avedon. William Klein began his career as a graphic designer, which is why his books are beautifully and meticulously produced, and more important, it provided the basis for his raw, powerful, and obtrusive photographic style. Every graphic designer wants his work not just to be noticed, but to invade your consciousness and implant itself there (this is why "art directors" of advertising agencies are graphic designers, and Klein himself worked in advertising intermittently). Klein inaugurated a revolution in photography by breaking with the medium's taboos and traditions. He developed a radically new way to take pictures, perfecting his graphic design-based style by incorporating elements of black humor, social criticism, satire, reportage, cinema, literature, and poetry, thereby creating the unique look that has since been so widely copied by other artists, graphic designers, and photographers (without credit being given to its creator) it is now part of our collective photographic vocabulary. There is no modern, "cutting-edge" magazine in the world that does not have an unmistakable trace of Klein's style. The work of such photographers as Max Vadukul, Ellen von Unwerth, Peter Lindbergh, David Sims, and Mario Testino, to name just a few, owes an immense debt to William Klein's ground-breaking oeuvre. An absolute "must-have" title for William Klein collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in white pen-marker on the black title page by William Klein. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The signature stands out against the page's predominantly black background. This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First American Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 91 duotone, 74 color plates. William Klein's "Life Is Good And Good For You In New York: Trance Witness Revels " was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest artist/photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER WILLIAM KLEIN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0679434240.

William Klein: Films

Imprint: Paris, France, Marval/Maison Europeenne De La Photographie, 1998
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 158 pages. Retrospective collection of the artist/photographer's films. The single most important book on the cinematic work of William Klein. The true First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the American Edition, which appeared a full year later. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by William Klein: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and film stills selected and sequenced by William Klein. Essay by Claire Clouzot. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie Paris in 1998. Presents William Klein's "Films". The complete cinematic oeuvre of the visual artist who is much better-known as a ground-breaking photographer. By 1964, Willam Klein had completed his now-legendary series of books on cities ("New York", "Moscow", "Rome", and "Tokyo"), and felt he had said everything he wanted to say through photography. He turned his restless and inexhaustible creative energies to film-making, and spent an extended period that lasted for more than two decades (from 1965 to the 1980's), making quirkily brilliant films that now enjoy a global cult following. It takes a truly courageous and uncompromising artist to abandon one medium, after leaving his indelible mark on it, and move on to another. Just as he permanently and radically changed the way people take photographs, William Klein's films expanded and enriched the cinematic vocabulary with such pioneering films as "Broadway By Light", "Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?" , "Mr. Freedom", "Muhammad Ali The Greatest", "The Little Richard Story", and "The Messiah". One of the greatest film directors of all time praised "Broadway By Light", on Manhattan's magnificent neon-lit signs: "It is truly the very first film that needed to be made in color" (Orson Welles). Since then, many well-known photographers have branched out into film-making. Some of the more recent sensations like Larry Clark, Bruce Weber, David LaChapelle, and Anton Corbijn have either turned to making films in addition to their photographic work or abandoned photography altogether. All of them credit William Klein's pioneering example as their primary inspiration. William Klein eventually returned to photography, and is now firmly established as one of the greatest visual artists of our time. Supplemented with an insightful essay by Claire Clouzot, this is the definitive book on William Klein's film work, whose recognition is long overdue. An absolute "must-have" title for William Klein collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in metallic-silver pen-marker on the title page by William Klein. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with a brand-new, shrinkwrapped copy of "The Delirious Fictions of William Klein" from Criterion, which presents for the very first time in DVD format three of William Klein's finest films. This title is a great film book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. William Klein's "Life Is Good And Good For You In New York" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". Klima, Ivan (Translated by A. G. Brain)
The Ultimate Intimacy

Imprint: New York City, NY, Grove Press, 1998
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 387 pages. The author's novel. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Ivan Klima's "The Ultimate Intimacy" in a felicitous English translation. His most philosophical novel. "It is easy to tease out the serious themes in Ivan Klima's novel of ideas: Religious belief versus earthly love; freedom versus responsibility; skepticism versus belief and the burdens of the Communist past versus those of the capitalist present. But 'The Ultimate Intimacy' is far more than a metaphysical point/counterpoint. Klima's exploration of one crucial year in the life of a good minister, who discovers that truth and passion can be all too distant, is no simple construction. Daniel Vedra is determined to live according to the Biblical certainties he proclaims. At a particularly low point, he is distracted by a mysterious and beautiful churchgoer and the two are soon entangled. In lesser hands, the situation might be incredible or at best, credible but hackneyed. In Klima's complex narrative, however, Daniel's crisis becomes a powerful drama of faith and salvation" (Publisher's blurb). "It is better to suffer and be loved than to be joyous but not loved" (Ivan Klima). An absolute "must-have" title for Ivan Klima collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Klima, Ivan (Translated by Paul Wilson)
Waiting For The Dark, Waiting For The Light

Imprint: London, England, Granta Books, 1994
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 234 pages. The author's "post-Communist" novel. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The British Edition is superior in terms of production values in every respect. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Ivan Klima's "Waiting For The Dark, Waiting For The Light" in a felicitous English translation. The first work by the great Czech writer-dissident since the collapse of the former Soviet Union and its satellite countries. For much of his writing life, Ivan Klima's work was banned in his native Czechoslovakia. Set during the Velvet Revolution led by President Vaclav Havel, the novel follows the life of Pavel Fukova, a cynical cameraman for state-controlled TV in Czechoslovakia circa 1989. "Pavel and his cineaste buddy, Peter, attempted to flee the country 21 years ago. Since then, Pavel has sacrificed his dreams one by one on the altar of expediency. Klima's fine prose is as unsettling as his purpose. The handful of scenes in an acrid explosives factory are so gloomy they could have been written by Conrad. Klima may, indeed, be reflecting the Velvet Revolution's darkening heart" (Publishers Weekly). An absolute "must-have" title for Ivan Klima collectors. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (British) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: The British Edition is superior in terms of production values in every respect. Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. Boyhood Island: My Struggle: Book Three

Imprint: London, England, Harvill Secker, 2014
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 395 pages. The third volume of the author's "My Struggle" six-volume novel. The first appearance of the title in the United Kingdom. The translation is published in the United Kingdom as "Boyhood Island", and also as part of the British "My Struggle" six-volume cycle. It's the other way around in the United States, where "My Struggle" takes precedence over the individual volumes. Published in a regular first print run as a hardcover original that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now rare. The production values of the British Edition are superior in every respect to its American counterpart. Presents Karl Ove Knausgaard's "Min Kamp" Volume Three in a felicitous English translation. Painful (rather than idyllic) childhood memories. What is the significance of Karl Ove Knausgaard's "My Struggle"? It is the most full-fledged break from - and signals the end of - the mannerism, academicism, post-modernism, and all other pretentious and tired isms of our time. It confirms the arrival of a major and original voice in world literature, writing in deceptively simple yet eloquent prose, without crutches. It rejects our obsession with "celebrity lives", by focussing on the tiniest details of one man's ordinary life as well as deeply painful struggle. It represents nothing less than a new - and transgressive - way of writing for our time. An absolute "must-have" title for Karl Ove Knausgaard collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (shortly after publication) in black pen-marker on the title page by the author: "London 23/5/14 Karl Ove Knausgaard". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It should also be noted that this copy has his FULL signature, which is the way he signed the first three volumes of "My Struggle" when they first came out. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed, placed, and post-publication dated copies of the First British Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (three weeks before publication) in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "London 14/3/2012 Karl Ove Knausgaard". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The publisher released advance copies for the author's London debut. It should also be noted that this copy has his FULL signature, which is the way he signed the first three volumes of "My Struggle" when they first came out. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, placed, and pre-publication dated copy of the First British Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KARL OVE KNAUSGAARD TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1846554675.

Knausgaard, Karl Ove (Author); Various Contributors & The Editors of ESOPUS Magazine
Esopus Magazine: Issue 23: Karl Ove Knausgaard

Imprint: New York City, NY, ESOPUS Foundation Limited, 2016
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. Unpaginated. Rare Karl Ove Knausgaard collectible item. A pristine copy of the legendary ESOPUS 23 Magazine Issue, signed by Karl Ove Knausgaard. The Issue features a stand-alone Pamphlet/Insert that contains an Essay by the author. It marks the very first appearance of the piece in English and in published form. ESOPUS is a multi-media magazine that all-encompasses literature, photography, the visual and performing arts. Includes contributions from a cross-section of creative disciplines. Presented in a striking visual format with no advertising. Removable posters, booklets, foldouts, and hand-assembled sculptures, utilizing complex printing processes, unique paper stocks, and specially-formulated inks, produced and realized in Canada to the highest standards. CD enclosed in pouch that is attached at the back. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in a separate Pamphlet/Insert format, Karl Ove Knausgaard's "On The Value of Literature" in a felicitous English translation. His full-fledged, characteristically iconoclastic, and indispensable literary manifesto. "Why books, sentences, words? Well, art can be invigorating to look at, but what is art exactly, if not the arbitrary product of human beings who never really learned how to adapt to society, people who believe themselves to be so special they don't need to contribute to the community, and instead spend their time giving form to the encounter between their precious inner being and the community's external manifestation, in the shape of earth piled up on a floor, an erect penis drawn with a marker on a sheet of metal, a motorcycle suspended from the ceiling, or simply an untidy room with an unmade bed, reconstructed in a gallery space?" (Karl Ove Knausgaard). An absolute "must-have" title for Karl Ove Knausgaard collectors. This copy of ESOPUS Magazine Issue 23's Pamphlet/Insert is very boldly and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (shortly after publication) in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "Brooklyn 21/5/16 Karl Ove Knausgaard". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great Issue. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, placed, and post-publication dated copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Extreme demand and time constraint have made Knausgaard resort to an Ondaatje-like swirl of a signature. Copies signed in this drastically abbreviated way have little to no collectible value. So the more he leaves of himself on the page (such as the place and date), the better. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KARL OVE KNAUSGAARD TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 525 pages. The second volume of the author's "My Struggle" six-volume novel. The first appearance of the title in the United Kingdom. The translation is published in the United Kingdom as "A Man In Love", and also as part of the British "My Struggle" six-volume cycle. The production values of the British Edition are superior in every respect to its American counterpart. Presents Karl Ove Knausgaard's "Min Kamp" Volume Two in a felicitous English translation. A man in love. What is the significance of Karl Ove Knausgaard's "My Struggle"? It is the most full-fledged break from - and signals the end of - the mannerism, academicism, post-modernism, and all the other pretentious and tired isms of our time. This title is a great book. Knight, Renee
Disclaimer: A Novel

Imprint: London, England, Doubleday & Company, 2015
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 300 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most important literary debuts of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the American Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Renee Knight's "Disclaimer". A "brilliantly conceived psychological thriller" (Publisher's blurb). It's more than that: A "novel-within-a-novel", gut-wrenching, and delirious account of a woman haunted by (very dark) secrets, her nemesis' all-consuming hatred and revenge, and the price she ultimately pays for trying to hide the truth. Knight uses a sequence of found photographs as her novel's deeply unsettling, central element to show us the profoundly ambiguous nature of photography itself, and what this means about our quest for the truth. Both professional and amateur photographers (Jonathan, the dead character who triggers the narrative, is an amateur photographer of professional caliber) like to say that their photographs tell a story. They do. The problem is that the exact same photographs tell not one, but many, stories that contradict one another. If the story you derive from a photographic sequence turns out to be the wrong one, turns out to be a lie, the consequences will be nothing less than catastrophic. "Sensationally good" (Lee Child). Renee Knight was an award-winning and successful BBC documentary filmmaker before she quit to write her remarkable debut. Often compared to "Gone Girl" (2012), and "The Girl On The Train" (2015), the latter on a yellow sticker pasted on the front of the first-state DJ, "Disclaimer" is, in fact, their exact, post-feminist opposite. An absolute "must-have" title for Renee Knight collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the month and year of publication) in black pen by the author: "Renee Knight April 2015". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title will become a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed and publication-month dated copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (British) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: The British precedes the American Edition by six weeks. Copies available online command as much as $100. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant novelists of our time. A fine copy. . ISBN 0062362259.

The exhibition was re-presented in 2013 on the occasion of the 12th Anniversary of 9/11. Presents Lewis Koch's "Bomber, A Chance Unwinding". An "exploration of a World War II crash site, a meditation on the ultimate futility of war, and on the importance of memory, grieving, and healing". Koch "uses photography, found images, maps, and text to engage in a critical response to contemporary life and politics. Bears witness to a World War II bomber crash site above the treeline in Wyoming's Cloud Peak Wilderness, a remote area that Koch describes as 'almost inconceivably stark and humbling'. Linking his own photographs of the site with images from documentary films, details of period maps, and poetry, this installation is a reflection on a particular tragedy as well as a metaphor for the societal devastation and environmental destruction caused by war" (Publisher's blrub). Koch is an artist's artist who makes photographic works, site-specific installations, and sculptural assemblage. He has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, in which countries his work is in the Permanent Collections of major museums. He isn't as well-known as Ed Ruscha (although he deserves to be). Like Ruscha, he makes his own Artist Books from scratch: From concept to image to design to full realization. Three of the most austerely and quirkily beautiful Artist Books one will ever see. Ed Ruscha, as it were, with a genuinely inquisitive, probing, and intellectual slant. "The photographic assemblages presented here reconfigure the idea of totems in a contemporary context. Offers sincere respect to the mysteries of our existence in its many manifestations. It also becomes a tool of critical discourse by suggesting the connectedness we all implicitly have to the pressing issues of our time" (Lewis Koch). But as these Artist Books will immediately show, he knows how to make elegant books, has a dry wit, and is an American original. An absolute "must-have" title for Lewis Koch collectors. Each copy of the "Totem" Complete Set is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the Limitation Page by Lewis Koch. They are all signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. A record and document, it also reflects the advanced Modernist aesthetics of Lewis Koch, David Mandel, and Michael Simon: These images could not be farther away from the lush Romanticism of their predecessor in Ansel Adams while having a lot more in common with the work of the other great Adams, Robert. The title comes from the cover image, a building named as such. "Created as a poetic and visual journey, spans twenty-five years and four continents. These striking photographs capture 'found text': The sometimes mysterious, occasionally humorous, often cryptic presence of words in the everyday landscape. In Koch's lyrical sequencing, the images reveal obscure and eccentric voices in their various and distinctive roles on the daily stage of the world around us. This intriguing approach at the intersection of language, image, and the social landscape will appeal to readers interested in contemporary art and photography, popular culture, and conceptual concerns both literary and visual" (Publisher's blurb). Koeppen, Wolfgang (Translated by Michael Hofmann)
The Hothouse

Imprint: New York City, NY, W. W. Norton & Company, 2001
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 221 pages. The author's masterpiece. Now widely considered one of the greatest novels of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Wolfgang Koeppen's "Das Triebhaus" in a felicitous English translation by Michael Hofmann. Masterpiece. "Long neglected in America, this 1953 novel traces the final two days in the life of a minor German politician. With a passionate, despairing voice, Wolfgang Koeppen, whom Gunter Grass once called 'the greatest German writer', creates a portrait of idealism crushed by political and personal compromise. It is an elegy to the amateur and the dilettante and an indictment of a century reduced to imitating its own movie actors, where even a miner looked like a film star playing a miner" (Michael Hofmann). Koeppen has been compared to and ranked with such 20th-century masters as Malcolm Lowry and James Joyce. The novel's belated translation is a major literary event. An absolute "must-have" title for Wolfgang Koeppen collectors. This title is a great book. Double Talk: The Erotics Of Male Literary Collaboration

Imprint: London, England, Routledge, 1989
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 215 pages. The author's debut book. One of Wayne Koestenbaum's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the regular trade edition, which was a softcover original only. Published in a small and limited first print run as the Library Edition, for distribution to libraries and university collections only, and as the inaugural volume of the "Literature And Sexuality" Routledge Series. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Wayne Koestenbaum's "Double Talk: The Erotics of Male Literary Collaboration". A subject the author was naturally born to write about: Men writing books together. "Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuer on hysteria, J. A. Symonds and Havelock Ellis on sexuality, a novel by Ford Madox Ford (and Joseph Conrad), 'The Waste Land' of T. S. Eliot (and Ezra Pound), even the 'Lyrical Ballads' of Wordsworth (and Coleridge). Koestenbaum's startling interpretation of literary collaboration focusses on homosexual desire: Men write together in order either to express - or to evade homosexual feelings. Their writing becomes a 'textual intercourse', the book at once a female body they can share and the child of their partnership. These man-made texts steal a generative power that women's bodies represent. Seen as the site of a struggle between homosexual and homophobic energies, the texts Koestenbaum explores - works of psychoanalysis, sexology, fiction, and poetry - emerge as more complex, more revealing. They crystallize and refract the anxiety of male sexuality, and open up a deeper understanding of connections between the erotic and the literary. Koestenbaum connects male collaboration and the exchange of women within patriarchy. He peers into both medical texts and imaginative literature, disturbing our ready acceptance of the co-authored work. This strong and unsettling book transforms our understanding of the creative process, providing a new sense of what both collaborative and solitary artistry mean" (Publisher's blurb). The original DJ Cover (since censored by Amazon and other platforms) is especially, even disturbingly, apt: It reproduces George Platt Lynes' great homoerotic photograph, "The Birth of Dionysus", one of the most imaginative male nude images ever conceived and realized. It shows a baby boy emerging from a naked man's ample thigh, Platt Lynes' serenely imagined substitute to a woman giving birth. An absolute "must-have" title for Wayne Koestenbaum collectors. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Should NOT be confused with the regular trade edition, which was a softcover original only. Humiliation

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 185 pages. Book-length account on subject. Now considered a contemporary classic. The true First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the British Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only and as part of Picador's "Big Ideas/Small Books" Series. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Wayne Koestenbaum's "Humiliation". "Considers the meaning of humiliation in this eloquent work of cultural critique and personal reflection". "The lives of people, both famous and obscure, are filled with scarlet-letter moments when their dirty laundry sees daylight. In these moments we not only witness the reversibility of 'success', of prominence, but also come to visceral terms with our own vulnerable selves. We can't stop watching the scene of shame, identifying with it and absorbing its nearness, and relishing our imagined immunity from its stain, even as we acknowledge the universal, embarrassing predicament of living in our own bodies. Takes us through a spectrum of mortifying circumstances: In history, literature, art, current events, music, film, and his own life. His generous disclosures and brilliant observations go beyond prurience to create a poetics of abasement. Plunges into one of the most disquieting of human experiences, with reflections at once emboldening and humane" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Wayne Koestenbaum collectors. Jackie Under My Skin: Interpreting An Icon

Imprint: New York City, NY, Farrar Straus & Giroux, 1995
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 292 pages. Book-length account on subject. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a regular first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents Wayne Koestenbaum's "Jackie Under My Skin: Interpreting An Icon". A brilliant "deconstruction" of an American icon, and as such, an expansion by its author of the meaning and pathos of being a fan. "The same kind of serious play that distinguished Koestenbaum's 'The Queen's Throat' shapes his scrutiny of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis: The highly charged gap between the private woman and the public icon she became. Her signature sunglasses and scarf, her coiffure ('battle gear of a woman of means'), even the 'O' of her name occasion manic, inventive, and wildly funny ruminations from Koestenbaum. In 'Silent Jackie', Maria Callas is quoted as saying that she 'spoke like Marilyn Monroe playing Ophelia'; in 'Jackie As Housewife', she is at once the devoted help-mate of powerful men and the star whose allure overshadowed them. Though some will undoubtedly find the book irreverent, those fascinated by the Cult of Celebrity will find Koestenbaum's analysis of an enduring icon a compelling contribution in cultural studies" (Publishers Weekly). Partly through the benefit of generational, not just chronological, distance, Koestenbaum is more illuminating about the True Meaning of Jackie than the accounts by the writers who actually knew her well - public figures themselves like Truman Capote, Gore Vidal (who was related to her), Pete Hamill, and Sir Stephen Spender, among innumerable other writers she befriended, who all succumbed to the centripetal force of her allure. The book originated as a series of essays in The New York Times Magazine (rather than say, Antaeus or New York Review), itself an indication of its subject's immense and enduring, perhaps eternal, appeal. An absolute "must-have" title for Wayne Koestenbaum collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, dated (two weeks before publication), and inscribed in blue pen on the front free endpaper by the author: "For Alfred and Chris - with love and gratitude - Wayne 14 April 1995". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipients, who are (or were) probably a couple, are (or were) unmistakably close to, not just known to, the author. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, pre-publication dated, and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. My 1980s And Other Essays

Imprint: New York City, NY, Farrar Straus & Giroux/FSG Originals, 2013
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 320 pages. Retrospective collection of essays. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only and as an FSG Originals title. "Autographed Copy" round green sticker pasted in front. The First Edition is now scarce. The book is very beautifully produced and features Andy Warhol's iconic Polaroid portrait of Debby Harry on the cover. Presents Wayne Koestenbaum's "My 1980s And Other Essays". A "retro" glance at the formative decade of his writing life - he is that rare animal, a poet and a critic - which also happens to be the most crucial decade of the late-20th century. "Impossible lovechild from a late-night, drunken three-way between Joan Didion, Roland Barthes, and Susan Sontag, Wayne Koestenbaum brings together a hyper-literate collection of manifestos, essays, and disclosures that wrestle with a series of prominent cultural figures - Koestenbaum's lodestars - and blur the boundary between academic and personal" (Publisher's blurb). A "kaleidoscopic intellectual autobiography" of the first rank, we come to know Koestenbaum, as we do every great critic/commentator, through his passions and obsessions. "Interests" doesn't quite do justice in his case, and Koestenbaum has an authoritative voice and presence: We not only hear but see him on every page. His style re-defines "threshold" in that it is reassuringly predictable and "come-from-nowhere", disruptively unpredictable at the same time. His range is staggering: James Schuyler, Roberto Bolano, Cindy Sherman, and Brigitte Bardot, among many others. His homages to his personal gods (who are frequently goddesses: Anna Moffo, with whom he is practically identified, Elizabeth Hardwick, Susan Sontag, ditto) are idiosyncratic, brilliant, and moving. His essays on popular culture shade Camille Paglia. As radical, insightful, and brilliant as Paglia could be, Koestenbaum tops her because his flamboyance is irresistible whereas Paglia's pugnaciousness, a sign of insecurity, can be tiresome and reactionary in the end. "An intellectual high-wire act that rarely falters" (Kirkus). An absolute "must-have" title for Wayne Koestenbaum collectors. This Autographed Copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Wayne Koestenbaum. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 80 pages. The author's breakthrough debut collection of poems. One of Wayne Koestenbaum's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Wayne Koestenbaum's "Ode To Anna Moffo And Other Poems". Lyrical odes to passions (artistic, erotic), devotions, and loves. "It is The Low that allows him to exult in the lavish heights of the Metropolitan Opera, idolizing a diva who rises above the physical world in her performances: 'I think that Anna / Moffo sings, / to this day, in a second, / parallel Met, a hologram of the original / projected in air, / where failing voices continue / to thrive amidst a system of strange geysers'. The unifying strength of the poems is Koestenbaum's burgeoning awareness of being gay, with all its emotional ramifications: 'When Carla put her hand on Ricky's knee / I saw my future's blueprint' " (Publishers Weekly). And of course: "Mired in low culture, / I was aching to reach the high" (Wayne Koestenbaum). An absolute "must-have" title for Wayne Koestenbaum collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in blue pen on the title page by Wayne Koestenbaum. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It is also very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed, placed, dated, and inscribed in blue pen on the same page by the author: "For Charles Berger, with admiration, Wayne, Salt Lake City 16 March 1992". The Queen's Throat: Opera, Homosexuality, And The Mystery Of Desire

Imprint: New York City, NY, Poseidon Press, 1993
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 271 pages. Landmark study on subject. One of the best books on opera ever written in our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only by a small independent press. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Wayne Koestenbaum's "The Queen's Throat: Opera, Homosexuality, And The Mystery of Desire". An idiosyncratic and masterly account on opera. The book began as one brilliant essay on Mozart that the great literary critic and novelist Susan Sontag included in her selection of the Best American Essays of the Year 1992. It is surely (if somewhat uneasily for opera's heterosexual devotees) the definitive book on the connection between opera and homosexuality. Koestenbaum sees in opera's preposterous marriage of music and words not snobbish comfort, but the pathos of being its fan - indeed, of being a fan - as well as a source of proud self-affirmation. Opera is singularly appealing to homosexuals: Its transformation of tragedy and unrequited love into smoldering passion and ecstasy, the noble, not just the ephemeral, suspension of disbelief, which imagines a more beautiful world not just for gay men but for all men, which is why it would be a shame if only gay men read the book. Everyone leads a double life, the real one and the fantastic one. If gay men were made to choose just one life to live to the fullest, they would probably choose fantasy, given the long and continuing history of persecution and oppression they have endured. It should be pointed out that this is not an exercise in self-indulgence: Koestenbaum knows his beloved music supremely well, and writes about it with penetrating intelligence. His analyses of the greatest operas, from Mozart to Puccini, put to shame the dry, academic, and cold essays by musicologists. He devotes an entire chapter to Maria Callas, the greatest diva of the 20th century, and anyone who knows Callas' tragic personal life will immediately see the projection that connects her and the gay man. "A brilliant book, an ecstatic book, and inevitably, an elegiac book. And one which, like some operas, certain voices, has the capacity to provoke admiration, rapture, identification" (Susan Sontag). An absolute "must-have" title for Wayne Koestenbaum collectors. This title is a classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition of the same name held at the Saint Louis Art Museum from September 28, 1993 to January 2, 1994. Presents Bob Kolbrener's "Photographs: Twenty-Five Years In The American West". Poetic, lyrical, and stunningly beautiful landscapes in the Classical tradition of Ansel Adams, by his most celebrated contemporary disciple. Adams' influence is inescapable (after all, Michael Kenna could not escape it, either). But every Kolbrener image has a brilliant interpretive twist: "They represent what happens to the grand tradition of landscape photography in the late 20th century: The grandeur of Nature is still there, but it has had to accommodate an increasing human presence. The American West, once the site of heroic explorations by lone dreamers, has since become the persistent destination of tourists and spoilers" (James D. Burke). Kolbrener has had two lifelong artistic goals: To photograph many of the same pristine landscapes, and many more new vistas, in all their Romantic glory and majesty; and to document the encroachment of human intervention, as the other Adams, Robert, did. Kolbrener is not a pessimistic nag, and in fact, he truly believes that Nature will prevail in the end. In the process, Kolbrener has gained a fervent following among environmentalists, who collect his work, and hold him in the highest esteem. His imagery speaks eloquently for itself. An absolute "must-have" title for Bob Kolbrener collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, dated, and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by the photographer: "For Paul Berlanga, You are nicer than we deserve! Best always, Bob Kolbrener 9/03". The recipient is the Chicago-based photography expert and important artist/painter, who is also a committed environmental activist. This comes with pristine copies of "Kolbrener's Yosemite" and "Bob Kolbrener Landscapes". This title is a late-modern photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. Michiko Kon: Still Lives: The Mit Visual Arts Center Exhibition Catalog

Imprint: Cambridge, Massachusetts, MIT Visual Arts Center, 1992
Edition: First Edition

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 8 pages. Exhibition Catalog. The first and only edition. Published in a tiny print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Catalog is now scarce. An elegant production by MIT Visual Arts Center: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover, as issued. Photographs by Michiko Kon. Essays by Katy Kline and Michiko Kasahara. Printed on thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the MIT Visual Arts Center in 1992. Presents a selection of Michiko Kon's singular photographs. She works exclusively in the still life genre. Each of her images is of an object assembled from fish, flesh, and fowl, in a post-Modernist nod to Man Ray and Meret Oppenheim. Her Surrealist-inspired art has also been compared to Arcimboldo and Edward Weston. "A contemporary artist of startling originality. Her exploration of the photographic still life, in which perishable materials - raw fish, fowl, vegetables - are combined with familiar, often feminine objects - a schoolgirl's uniform, high-heeled shoes, a pocketbook - triggers our senses of touch, taste, and smell through vision and imagination" (MIT Visual Arts Center). "Michiko Kon takes the Classical tradition of the still life and gives it new life through the re-animation of object parts and body parts in new forms. A fish with legs, a vacuum cleaner turned into an animal, a light bulb turned into a pear, a remote device turned into a living creature, a flower vase display sprouting heads of fish. It is this exchange of the inanimate with the animate that imbues the stillness of her photography with the dynamism of the balance between life and death, being awake and dreaming" (Aperture Foundation). An absolute "must-have" title for Michiko Kon collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the Exhibition Catalog still available online and despite its imperfection (slight wear on the fragile spine corners, but it's there) is still in fine condition overall: Every single internal page is clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: The wear happened at the publisher's, not from human use or handling, and does not affect any of the inside pages. A scarce copy thus. 7 plates. One of the finest artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy. .

The Beneficiary

Imprint: Evanston, IL, Northwestern University Press, 1993
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 116 pages. The author's first novel to be translated into English. One of the finest literary works of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only by a University Press. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Barbara Konig's "The Beneficiary" in a felicitous English translation. Widely acknowledged to be her masterpiece. "Have you been able to exist for 35 years knowing that you aren't really living your own life but someone else's? That's the real question in German writer Konig's thought-provoking novel. Toward the end of the Second World War, a man named Mommsen, an unwilling accomplice in a plot to blow up a bridge, was condemned to be executed. Unbeknownst to him, another prisoner, a chaplain, takes his place in front of the firing squad. Now 35 years later, the chaplain's sacrifice is being memorialized, and reporters, citizens, and even Mommsen's wife want to know: Was it worth it? But Mommsen, busy building the success of his real-estate firm, never gave much thought at all to the chaplain's sacrifice, having seen himself less as a beneficiary than as the man who made another man a hero. Mommsen does eventually do his share of soul-searching but Konig has an ironic touch, neatly steering her terse, episodic narrative away from the maudlin and the simplistic. Readers willing to spend a little time and effort thinking about what makes a life worthwhile will be intrigued" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Barbara Konig collectors. Konrad, George (Translated by Ivan Sanders)
Stonedial

Imprint: New York City, NY, Harcourt Brace, 2000
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 290 pages. The author's novel. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents George Konrad's "Stonedial" in a felicitous English translation. A magisterial novel. Konrad, a past President of International PEN, known for his novels criticizing the authoritarianism of Hungary's communism, sets his book in 1993, four years after the old regime has been swept away. A famous author similar to Konrad himself, returns to Kandor, a fictional city very much like Budapest. Slipping between first- and third-person accounts of past and present, Konrad reflects for the first two-thirds of the book, providing historical background and information about his protagonist. Then, in its last third, the narrative suddenly crystallizes: At a party that is being filmed by the mayor, an argument about an incident in the 1956 revolt ensues, resulting in a violent death. "This is an intellectual novel in every sense, by one and about one, intended for page readers rather than page turners" (Richard Lourie). An absolute "must-have" title for George Konrad collectors. Imprint: New York City, NY, The Monacelli Press, 2002
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition Thus / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1344 pages. Massive Topographic Monograph. One of the greatest books of our time. The Third "Special" Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the 2007 Purple Variant Edition. Published in yet another small and limited print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The Third Special Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Rem Koolhaas and Bruce Mau: Oversize-volume format. Issued in several title-color variants over the years (Yellow, Orange, Blue, and Purple), this copy is in the uniform metallic-silver hard boards with Blue titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Concept, writings, sketches, designs, drawings, photographs, completed projects, ephemera, and other materials by Rem Koolhaas. Photographs by Hans Werlemann. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Rem Koolhaas' and Bruce Mau's "S, M, L, XL: Small, Medium, Large, Extra-Large". The Last Word on architecture and urban planning of and for our time. "A novel about architecture and urban planning. Conceived as a free-fall in the space of the topographic imagination, the book's title is also its framework: Projects and essays are arranged according to scale. Projects are arranged according to scale. Small and Medium address issues ranging from the domestic to the public. Large focuses on what Koolhaas calls 'the architecture of Big-ness'. Extra-Large features projects on the urban scale" (Publisher's blurb). Koolhaas' mission is arrestingly and stubbornly simple: To re-think in a radical manner every structure or urban landscape. The importance of Rem Koolhaas and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) is now universally recognized. It has no equivalent in the United States (or for that matter, in Europe) as a leading nerve center of cutting-edge architecture, of "thinking-about-space-as-time". An absolute "must-have" title for Rem Koolhaas collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in metallic-silver and gold pen-markers on the title page by Rem Koolhaas. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Third "Special" Edition/First Printing/Blue Variant available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: This book has the most confusing printing-indication history ever because there is NO indication on the Copyright Page at all. You can only tell the sequence-edition through the color variant on the cover, in this case Blue. Copies available online command up to $1750. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 1250 plates. One of the greatest architects of our time. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 1885254016.

Kotlowitz, Alex
Never A City So Real: A Walk In Chicago

Imprint: New York City, NY, Crown Publishers, 2004
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 160 pages. Book-length account on subject. One of Alex Kotlowitz's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are many. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The tenth volume in the elegant Series called "Crown Journeys", which includes some of the brightest stars in the literary firmament descending on a particular place that has special significance for them. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Alex Kotlowitz's "Never A City So Real: A Walk In Chicago". The Number One best-selling title in the "Crown Journeys" Series. He is not the first to make the observation, but his account of it is surely one of the most compelling: That Chicago, not New York or Los Angeles, is the true city of outsiders and immigrants, of lost souls seeking refuge from a hostile country, foreign and native, and their own personal messed-up-ness. If New York is the quintessentially European American city, Chicago is surely the quintessentially American city. As Woody Allen's films show, New York is about fantasy, romance, and day-dreaming, which has its place in everyone's life. As captured with brute savagery in David Mamet's early plays, Chicago is convinced that the only real point is the nitty-gritty of fighting and living. An absolute "must-have" title for Alex Kotlowitz collectors. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are in multiple subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. Exiles: The 1988 First Edition: With The 2014 New And Expanded Edition

Imprint: New York City, NY, Aperture Foundation, 1988
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 180 pages. Rare Josef Koudelka collectible set. A fine copy of "Exiles" First Hardcover Edition with a pristine/shrinkwrapped copy of "Exiles" 2014 New And Expanded Edition. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Originally published in 1988 in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Josef Koudelka and The Aperture Foundation: Oversize-volume format. Brown cloth boards with facsimile of Koudelka's signature embossed on cover and titles on spine, as issued. Photographs by Josef Koudelka. Essay by Nobel Laureate Czeslaw Milosz, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Switzerland to the highest standards. The reproduction quality of the First Edition has not been surpassed. In pictorial DJ, which features a reproduction of the single most celebrated image in the book, and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition held in Paris and New York in 1988. Presents Josef Koudelka's "Exiles". His most autobiographical collection. The title refers to Koudelka himself, and all other exiles like him. Koudelka escaped from Communist Prague to London and finally to Paris, where he lives to this day as a Magnum photographer. Along the way, he was in "stateless" transition several times, just like the marginalized and impoverished individuals and communities in his book. "The images are underpinned by Koudelka's stark and austere compositional style and the deliberate 'grainy-ness' of the photographs themselves. The photographs are beautiful not because they present pretty images, but because they reveal the realities and oddities of life. Milosz's essay on the meaning of exile is one of the greatest essays on the subject ever written, a perfect match to this great collection" (Robert Delpire). This comes with a pristine copy of the 2014 New And Expanded Edition, which remains faithful to the original edition while supplementing it with 10 new images and a new Essay by Robert Delpire, and is described thus: "Solitary, moving, deeply felt, and strangely disturbing, the images suggest alienation, disconnection, and love. Evokes some of the most compelling and troubling themes of the 20th century while resonating with equal force in this current moment of profound migrations and transience" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" set for Josef Koudelka collectors. This title is a great photography book. This is one of few copies of the 1988 First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. It comes with a pristine, shrinkwrapped copy of the 2014 New And Expanded Edition. As far as we know, this is the only set of "Exiles" available online. Please note: By critical consensus, the reproduction quality of the First Edition has not been surpassed, not even by the New Edition. Copies of the 1988 true First Edition available online command up to $1000 by itself, regardless of condition, as indeed copies available online have serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely set. A rare set thus. 77 duotone plates. Three of Josef Koudelka's books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". Gypsies: The New And Expanded Edition

Imprint: New York City, NY, Aperture Foundation, 2011
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 230 pages. New And Expanded Edition of the photographer's classic. One of the greatest photography books of our time. The first appearance of the title in this edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Second Printing and the Thames & Hudson Facsimile Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition Thus is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Josef Koudelka and Gerhard Steidl: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with black titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Josef Koudelka. Afterword Essay by Will Guy. Printed in quadrotone on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper using all-new, high-resolution scans by Steidl in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. By critical consensus (notably, John Gossage), it is vastly superior to all other previous editions in terms of its production values. In pristine-white DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Re-presents, in nothing less than a restorative and definitive edition, Josef Koudelka's "Cikani". Otherwise better-known as "Gypsies". His debut and masterpiece. "Rekindles the energy and astonishment of this foundational body of work by master photographer Josef Koudelka. Offers an expanded look at 109 photographs taken between 1962 and 1971 in then-Czechoslovakia (Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia), Romania, Hungary, France, and Spain. Revisits the artist's original intention for the work and is based on the maquette prepared in 1968 by Koudelka and graphic designer Milan Kopriva. Koudelka intended to publish the work in Prague, but was forced to flee Czechoslovakia, landing eventually in Paris. In 1975, Robert Delpire, Aperture, and Koudelka collaborated to publish 'Gitans, la fin du voyage', a selection of 60 photographs taken in various settlements around East Slovakia" (Publisher's blurb). The book restores and incorporates 30 images that appear in published form for the very first time, accompanied by a new Essay by sociologist Will Guy. Except for the title itself, Guy restores the name these great people call themselves, "Roma", Gypsies being their marginalized/outsider-status appellation. Guy helps us understand their status as an oppressed (yet irrepressible) minority, a people who originally came from India and remain nomadic to this day. As such, they are exactly like our human ancestors. Constantly moving and never permanently settling down in one place are in their blood, making their presence in modern, stable societies destabilizing and well, unsettling, therefore deeply threatening. An absolute "must-have" title for Josef Koudelka collectors. This New And Expanded Edition of a great photography book is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the 2011 Aperture Foundation First Edition Thus/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Should NOT be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Second Printing and the Thames & Hudson Edition, which is an exact facsimile/replica of the Aperture Edition. Copies available online, especially those shrinkwrapped ones, are Later Printings. How do you know if a copy is the First Edition/First Printing if it is still shrinkwrapped? You do not. A rare copy thus. 109 plates and gatefolds. Three of Josef Koudelka's books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". The greatest Czech photographer of our time. Kramer, Lawrence
Why Classical Music Still Matters

Imprint: Berkeley, CA, University Of California Press, 2007
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 242 pages. Book-length account on subject. One of the most passionate, compelling, and accessible polemical books on the state of Classical Music in the Global Age. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only by a University Press. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Lawrence Kramer's "Why Classical Music Still Matters". Which has become a surprising mainstream success. The strength of Lawrence Kramer's argument lies precisely in the fact that he is unwilling to make compromises (as even some of the most well-known classical artists have) to a "mass audience". He thinks, rightly, that it is condescending to them, and that the fundamental appeal of Classical Music (before and after the rise and eventual dominance of American popular music) will always be that it is the more challenging and therefore more rewarding experience, an experience that isn't just about "The Past", but one that exists simultaneously on many complex levels. It is what the idea of music has always been about (and why the great British critic Walter Pater once said that "all art aspires to the condition of music"), and Kramer puts it in a fresh and engaging perspective, in polished, non-academic prose that is richly descriptive. "Classical Music isn't necessarily all that bad off. There is still a diverse range of concert performances, and many listeners are choosing to download works from the Internet. But something still feels wrong, something Lawrence Kramer identifies as the loss of Classical Music's central role in cultural life. The reasons Kramer offers for why one ought to appreciate Classical Music go back to the high-culture argument that it 'asks its listeners to imagine a work with more fullness and complexity than most other music does', converting emotions into tangible sound yet somehow not reducing them to abstraction. The problem with writing about Classical Music, of course, is that no matter how passionately you describe a Brahms quintet, it's not the same as hearing an actual performance. Kramer is very convincing when he describes the effect a young performer's Bach sonata has on crowds at a New York subway station. Such moments of direct observation are sprinkled throughout the erudite text" (Publishers Weekly). An absolute "must-have" title for all lovers (and would-be lovers) of Classical Music. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. Krasznahorkai, Laszlo (Translated by George Szirtes) & Tarr, Bela (Film Director)
Satantango

Imprint: New York City, NY, New Directions, 2012
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / Second Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 275 pages. Rare Laszlo Krasznahorkai collectible set. Pristine copies of "Satantango" First American Edition/Second Printing, signed by Laszlo Krasznahorkai, and the film version-adaptation on DVD. The author's masterpiece. One of the greatest novels of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. Even this First Edition/Second Printing is now scarce. Presents Laszlo Krasznahorkai's "Satantango" in a felicitous English translation. An apocalyptic Dance of Death like no other. "Spellbinding, bleak, and hauntingly beautiful, the story, spread over a couple of days of endless rain, focuses on the dozen remaining inhabitants of an unnamed isolated hamlet: Failures stuck in the middle of nowhere. Schemes, crimes, infidelities, hopes of escape, and above all trust and its constant betrayal are Krasznahorkai's meat" (Publisher's blurb). "At the center of 'Satantango' is the eponymous dance, referred to sometimes as a tango and sometimes as a csardas. A world that is rough and ready, lost somewhere between The Comic and The Tragic, in one small corner of the cosmos" (George Szirtes). Until recently (that is, 2015, upon winning the MAN Booker International Prize), Krasznahorkai was largely unknown among readers in English. But he has been a revered cult figure among cinephiles for a very long time: He collaborated with Bela Tarr, one of the four or five greatest filmmakers of our time, on the latter's most important films, notably "Werckmeister Harmonies" (2000), which is based upon "The Melancholy of Resistance" (1998), and of course, "Satantango" (1994). There is a reason why the film lasts for seven hours, which is, realistically, nothing less than an eternity: It consists of very long takes that visually approximate Krasznahorkai's very long sentences. The novel as a whole is relatively short at 275 pages, which can be read in one sitting lasting about two hours, the typical length of a film. But with a long sentence on every page, it is not difficult to imagine the equivalent number of takes adding up cumulatively to seven hours, thereby reversing the normal "book-to-film" ratio. Very few among the most dedicated cinephiles have been able to sit through the film without interruption (Sontag was one of them, and she proudly asserted that she planned to do so once a year for the rest of her life). Most people who have seen the film did so on video, with regular interruptions, and should be forgiven for being slack. "The contemporary Hungarian master of the Apocalypse who inspires comparisons with Gogol and Melville" (Susan Sontag). An absolute "must-have" title for Laszlo Krasznahorkai collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (in the year of publication) in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "Laszlo Krasznahorkai NY, 15 December 2012". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with a pristine copy of the three-disc DVD set of Bela Tarr's "Satantango", whose screenplay was written by the author. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First American Edition/Second Printing with DVD set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. Please note: Krasznahorkai signed the book, NOT the DVD. But the latter commands between $80 and $150 by itself online. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare set thus. First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 290 pages. The author's third novel. One of the most important literary events of the decade. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Nicole Krauss' "Great House". Her third novel, and her first since the critically acclaimed "The History of Love" (2005). The novel tells not one but several narratives that are unrelated to each other but are tied together by and revolve around a physical object, a writing desk. Krauss uses the desk as a metaphor for destruction, loss, and recovery through memory. With "Man Walks Into A Room" (2002), Nicole Krauss "strides into the forefront of American letters" (Susan Sontag). "Great House", a "soaring, powerful novel about memory struggling to create a meaningful permanence in the face of inevitable loss", confirms that she will stay there. Man Walks Into A Room: A Novel

Imprint: New York City, NY, Doubleday, 2002
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 250 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most sensational literary debuts of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Nicole Krauss' "Man Walks Into Room". Her first, and in many ways, still her finest novel. As she explores the classic theme of memory work, what it means to remember, to forget, and then, as epiphany or grace, to recognize something buried deep within each of us. "Achieves a beguiling, dreamy tenderness as it tells the story of Samson Greene, a seemingly happy, well-adjusted English professor whose life is thrown wildly out of kilter by a brain tumor. It is discovered only after he suddenly leaves home and is found wandering in the Nevada desert. Once the tumor is removed, he can remember nothing beyond the age of 12 so that his adult existence, his friends, his professional life, and especially his wife, Anna, are a profound mystery to him. A somber tale full of dark symbolism that is surprisingly lighthearted, sharply observant, and often touching" (Publishers Weekly). "Strides into the forefront of American letters" (Susan Sontag). Smokily evocative and unbearably sexy images of the most beautiful women in their sheer underwear. Imagined and fully realized for us, hopeless dreamers/voyeurs, by one of the most stylishly brilliant photographers of the female nude ever. "What happens when you take the vision and style of Paul Outerbridge, Helmut Newton, and Ralph Gibson, mix them with plenty of cigarette smoke, and photograph the naked women in color? Answer: Some of the best neo-noir work of our time" (Publisher's blurb). "A number of years ago, I began to see distinctive layouts that got me nervous. The photographs were that good. Whoever it was had style, and made the women HIS women. Krider Women. Women I began to desire on a monthly basis. In the world of professional golf, there is an expression: 'The world's greatest golfer not to win a major tournament'. Chas Ray Krider is the world's greatest erotic art photographer not to have a book. But thanks to Taschen, we now have these Krider images to pore over. He takes us to lustful places: Is it a crime scene or a sea of lust? These beautiful, languid women wait for whom? For me? For you. They play the 'waiting game' beautifully. Krider will take you places where you only think you have been" (Eric Kroll). Krider is the obsessional fetishist/artist/photographer par excellence, like Pierre Molinier, Helmut Newton, and Robert Mapplethorpe: "In the beginning, it was all stockings and girdles and high heels. Then, I discovered sheer panties. I really like this veiling. It is seeing and not seeing" (Chas Ray Krider). An absolute "must-have" title for Chas Ray Krider collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the accompanying original print. The latter is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully numbered, ante-dated (by two years, as a vintage print), and signed in black ink-pen on verso by the photographer: "MF6 Chas Ray Krider 2000". "MF" stands for "Motel Fetish", of which the print is Number 6. The print is highly collectible as it is the Cover Image. This title is a great erotic art photography book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Limited Edition With Original Color Print available online, is encased in a hand-made black hard board box, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Krider signed the print, NOT the book. The vintage print, by itself, commands thousands of dollars. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. Krugman, Paul
The Great Unraveling: Losing Our Way In The New Century

Imprint: New York City, NY, W. W. Norton & Company, 2003
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 426 pages. The author's account on subject. One of the most important books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Paul Krugman's "The Great Unraveling: Losing Our Way In The New Century". The most accessible, relevant, and intelligent account on the dire state of the United States of America, presciently written five years before the country finally unravelled. "A chronicle of how the heady optimism of the late 1990's gave way to renewed gloom as a result of incredibly bad leadership, in the private sector and in the corridors of power. Economist Paul Krugman lays much of the blame on the Bush Administration, which he views as a 'revolutionary power, a movement whose leaders do not accept the legitimacy of our current political system'. Declaring them radicals masquerading as moderates, he questions their motives on a range of issues, particularly their tax and Social Security plans, which he argues are 'obviously, blatantly based on bogus arithmetic'. A fine writer, Krugman relies heavily on both numbers and words to examine corporate malfeasance, the rise and fall of the stock market, the federal budget, the future of Social Security, and how a huge surplus quickly became a record deficit. He also rails against the American news media for displaying an appalling lack of skepticism and for failing to do even the most basic homework when reporting on business and economic issues. Krugman writes clearly about complex issues, and offers plenty of evidence and hard facts to support his theory regarding the intersection of business, economics, and politics, making this a detailed, informative, and thought-provoking book" (Shawn Carkonen). "For his analysis of trade patterns and locations of economic activity, Krugman formulated a new theory to answer questions about free trade: 'What are the effects of free trade and globalization? ' 'What are the driving forces behind worldwide urbanization? ' Paul Krugman has formulated a new theory to answer these questions. He has thereby integrated the previously disparate research fields of international trade and economic geography" (Nobel Prize Citation). An absolute "must-have" title for Paul Krugman collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Paul Krugman. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Letter from the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, which hosted Krugman's appearance. It comes with a copy of the April 6, 2009 Cover Issue, "Obama Is Wrong", which shows the author on the cover and features a scathing attack on President Obama's first (more or less) 100 days in office as its main story. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2008. One of the greatest economist/writers of our time. A fine copy. . ISBN 0393058506.

Kuhn, Mona (Photographer); Kai & Luzia (Contributors) & Berlnaga, Paul (Recipient)
Mona Kuhn: Photographs

Imprint: Gottingen, Germany, Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag, 2004
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 108 pages. The photographer's second collection of nudes. One of the most beautiful erotic art photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 5000 copies. A brilliant production by Mona Kuhn and Gerhard Steidl: Oversize-volume format. Peach cloth boards with green titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Mona Kuhn. Text by Kai and Luzia. List of Plates And Acknowledgments appended at the end. Souvenir Invitation laid into the book. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Steidl in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Mona Kuhn's "Photographs". In many ways, still her best collection: Ethereal nude and semi-nude portraits in solo, duo, and group shots. The debt to the work of Jock Sturges is unmistakable (Kuhn thanks him in her Acknowledgments). Still, these are only so much about the vulnerable beauty of the human body insofar as they also somehow evoke an otherworldy state of grace that Mona Kuhn has explored so well in her work (and that Sturges does not in his) : "Evokes states of being that are at once foreign and familiar. When I first saw her images, I felt the dislocation of a time traveller encountering a realm that we, in modern life, have almost lost through our carelessness or consciously abandoned with our callousness. In that far-off place, figures sit or stand or lie together with natural grace, resembling the Greek gods that Roberto Calasso reminds us have never left the world even though we have overlooked their presence here. In her photographs, Mona enables these archetypes to spring into physical form once again from deep within our psyches" (Darius Himes). Kuhn has exhibited in the United States and Europe extensively, and her work has been championed by Sir Elton John, who owns the single largest collection of her work. An absolute "must-have" title for Mona Kuhn collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, dated (in the year of publication), and inscribed in black pen-marker on the title page by the photographer: "For Paul, With my best wishes, love and joy! Mona Kuhn 2004". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient, Paul Berlanga, who is named, an important Chicago-based artist/painter and photography expert. It comes with a pristine copy of the Exhibition Invitation, which is laid into the book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, publication-year dated, and inscribed copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies of the Limited Edition available online command as much as $200. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 20 color, 33 tritone plates. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MONA KUHN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3865210082.

Kundzicz, Walter (Photographer) & Massengill, Reed (Editor/Author)
Champion: Photographs By Walter Kundzicz

Imprint: Frankfurt, Germany, Goliath Verlag, 2003
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 368 pages. Retrospective collection of male nudes. One of the best erotic photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Goliath Verlag: Small-size volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Walter Kundzicz. Introduction by Reed Massengill. The photographs are also reproduced in miniature with the full names of the models at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Frankfurt, Germany to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Walter Kundzicz's "Champion". Hundreds of male nudes taken by Kundzicz when he owned and operated Champion Studios. "Famous for quality color images of handsome, athletic men from the late 1950's and early 1960's, these photographs of scantily clad athletes (packed with amusing props, costumes, and bulging posing pouches) are notable not only for the commercial success they enjoyed during their heyday but also for their enduring creativity and imagination. Kundzicz and his work left an indelible imprint on male physique photography. Today, half a century later, Kundzicz's work and his most popular models continue to have their ardent fans" (Publisher's blurb). Actually, most of the models are full-frontal nude, and those who are "scantily clad" are wearing "see-through" briefs, fishnets, bikinis, and gym straps, allowing you not only to get a glimpse, but to see everything. The heterosexual Richard Prince, one of the most important and influential American artists of our time, has appropriated, that is, re-photographed many of the images, notably Stash Howard in his Marlboro Man outfit (who is shown actually smoking a Marlboro whereas the Marlboro Man was mostly shown lighting a cigarette). These photographs of a bygone era show how much we have become less, rather than more, open as a society over time. The Internet is helping change all that, and as such, is merely taking us back to a more uninhibited time when the handsome man on the street gladly posed nude before Walter Kundzicz's camera. An absolute "must-have" title for Walter Kundzicz collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Walter Kundzicz. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It is also very prominently and beautifully signed in blue pen-marker on the same page by Reed Massengill. This title is an erotic photography book classic. As far as we know, this is the only such double-signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 345 color plates. One of the most brilliant photographers of the male nude of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. Kundzicz, Walter (Champion Studios) & Chance, Darren (Model/Subject)
Darren Chance: "full-frontal Shower Scene" Nude Color Photograph By Walter Kundzicz

Imprint: New York City, NY, Champion Studio, 1988
Edition: First Edition

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare Darren Chance and Walter Kundzicz/Champion Studios collectible item. An original vintage color photographic print of Darren Chance, one of the most popular and most good-looking male-nude models discovered by Walter Kundzicz, in one of his full-frontal nude portraits. The print measures 3.5 X 5 inches and is presented "bleed". Champion Studio's earlier vintage prints were "pocket size" and had white borders, the widespread practice in the 1960's. It is encased in a protective plastic sheet. The photograph shows Darren Chance in a very revealing full-frontal nude portrait in the shower. The photograph belonged to the small surviving number of portraits in Walter Kundzicz's possession. The original prints were taken by Kundzicz's partner after Champion Studios dissolved, have completely vanished, and never been found. Darren Chance is a "Dark Knight" version of the prototypical All-American male beauty. He anticipates by about two decades the model/stars of the reigning American photographer of the male nude, Bruce Weber. This is the genuine article, an absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Darren Chance, Walter Kundzicz/Champion, and male erotic art photography collectors. This original vintage color photographic print, titled/indicated as such on verso, is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the print available online, is eminently suitable for framing, and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: There are Walter Kundzicz prints available online, but most of them are digital copies or have serious flaws and so have little or no collectible value. This print is a beauty, and as such, an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. One of the iconic American male-nude models of the 20th century. A fine print. (SEE ALSO OTHER JIM STRYKER, TUCK POWELL, JOE DALLESANDRO, AND BRUCE OF LOS ANGELES TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).
