Petterson, Per (Translated by Anne Born)
To Siberia: A Novel

Imprint: Minneapolis, MN, Graywolf Press, 2008
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 248 pages. The author's debut novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Per Petterson's "To Siberia" in a felicitous English translation. His first novel (1996). Published in the United States twelve years later following the sensational success of his international breakthrough, "Out Stealing Horses" (2007). "Has all of Petterson's haunted charms. As an unnamed young girl and her big brother, Jesper (who calls her Sistermine), grow up in rural Second World War-era Denmark, the two cope with distant parents, an eccentric extended family, and the cold wind. Jesper longs to go south to Morocco; Sistermine yearns for the plains of Siberia, foreshadowing lives that will diverge. The book builds up slowly, casting a spell of beauty and devastation that matches the bleak but dazzling climate that enshrouds Sistermine's young life" (Library Journal). An absolute "must-have" title for Per Petterson collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen on the title page by Per Petterson. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Phillips, Arthur (Author) & Shakespeare, William (Attribution/As Re-Written By Arthur Phillips)
The Tragedy Of Arthur: A Novel

Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 2011
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 370 pages. The author's fifth novel. Arthur Phillips' finest achievement. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Arthur Phillips' "The Tragedy of Arthur". Bids to be The Last Word on Post-Modernism by being contemporarily ironic about Shakespearean irony. "A long-lost Shakespeare play surfaces in Phillips' wily novel, a sublime faux memoir framed as the long Introduction to the play's first printing, a Modern Library Edition, of course. Arthur Phillips and his twin sister, Dana, maintained an uncommon relationship with their gregarious father, a forger whose passion for The Bard and for creating magic in the everyday leave lasting impressions on them both: Dana becomes a stage actress and amateur Shakespeare expert, Arthur a writer who 'never much liked Shakespeare'. Their father spends most of their lives in prison, but when he's about to be released as a frail old man, he enlists Arthur in securing the publication of 'The Tragedy of Arthur' from an original quarto he claims to have purloined from a British estate. As the authentication process wears on - successfully - Arthur becomes convinced the play is his father's greatest scam. Then there's the play itself, which reads not unlike something written by the man from Stratford-upon-Avon" (Publishers Weekly). After all, doubts persist as to who William Shakespeare really was or if he even existed. Arthur Phillips' play written in the manner of Shakespeare is dazzling, a copy worthy of the original. An absolute "must-have" title for Arthur Phillips collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (on the day of publication) in black pen on the title page by the author: "Arthur Phillips 4/19/11". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and publication-day dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Pierce, Olive
Iraqi Children: Photographs By Olive Pierce

Imprint: Boston, MA, The Art Of Compassion, 2003
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 13 pages. Rare Olive Pierce collectible set. A pristine copy of "Iraqi Children: Photographs by Olive Pierce", signed by Olive Pierce. Retrospective collection of postcards. 4 X 5 inch black-and-white photographic postcards, from the sequence taken by the American photographer in 1999. The Complete Set of 12 postcards (plus a Cover Card) was published by the Art of Compassion to help call attention to the plight of Iraq's children. Printed on stiff, uncoated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. There is no ISBN. The Postcard Set is now rare. Presents Olive Pierce's "Iraqi Children". Heartbreakingly beautiful photographs of beautiful children, "a people who have had more than their share of suffering and yet haven't lost hope" (Olive Pierce). Hers is a crucial point because out of habit, we seldom think - so Pierce forces us to think - of children as people, with the same reactions, sensations, thoughts, feelings, and experiences as grownups do. "Children everywhere in the world are especially vulnerable to the disasters that befall their countries. In Iraq, the young have suffered the effects of war. Yet they have a brightness of spirit that defies the harshness of their lives. Olive Pierce, a documentary photographer and longtime political activist, has been advocating since 1998 for an end to the economic sanctions that have caused disruptions and death among Iraqi children. In 1999, she made a journey to Iraq under the auspices of Voices In The Wilderness to bring back firsthand impressions of their lives" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Olive Pierce collectors. This Complete Set is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black pen on the Cover Card by Olive Pierce. It is signed directly on the card itself, not on a tipped-in page. The Cover reproduces all 12 photographs of the set in miniature. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Pierre, DBC (Pierre, D. B. C.; Pierre D B C)
Vernon God Little: A 21st Century Comedy In The Presence Of Death

Imprint: London, England, Faber & Faber, 2003
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 279 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents DBC Pierre's "Vernon God Little". His breakthrough first book. It became a huge success abroad, but was ignored in the United States by the big publishing houses (it was eventually published by a small press called Canongate). The New Yorker Magazine compared the book, very favorably, to J. D. Salinger's "The Catcher In The Rye". The basis for the comparison is primarily the eponymous character who, like Holden Caulfield, is a smart and frustrated teenager. He believes the world around him is completely synthetic and anesthecized by a confluence of malevolent forces: Tabloid television, consumer-culture idiocy, Americans' obsession with the suffering of others as their way of denying their own, conspicuous consumption (as exemplified by Corporate America and Wall Street), and image consciousness (as exemplified by mass-media advertising and "branded" personalities). If Vernon sounds way too intelligent and aware for his age, Joyce Carol Oates quickly points out that the novel's greatest strength is the author's "flawless ear for adolescent-boy speech. To his young narrator, virtually every adjective is 'f-----' and every vision of every adult is laced with repugnance, especially those adults in authority. Vernon is a Holden Caulfield on amphetamines. 'Vernon God Little' is raucous and brooding, coarse and lyrical, corrosive and sentimental in about equal measure and in the right way" (Joyce Carol Oates). DBC Pierre is the pseudonym of Peter Warren Finlay, who was born in Australia, raised in the United States and Mexico, and now divides his time among London, Sydney, and Dublin (DBC stands for "Dirty But Clean"). His book was considered a long shot for the Booker Prize, but when it was announced as the winner, the judges hastened to add that the vote took "less than an hour to decide and was unanimous". An absolute "must-have" title for DBC Pierre collectors. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. Winner of the Booker Prize for "Vernon God Little" in 2003. One of the most brilliant new voices in contemporary literature. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER COPY OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). Pierson, Jack
Every Single One Of Them

Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 320 pages. Collection of color photographs. One of the finest erotic art photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 4000 copies. The Limited Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Jack Pierson and Jack Woody: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 4 pounds. Yellow cloth boards with black titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Jack Pierson. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. In publisher's original shrinkwrap. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published in conjunction with Jack Pierson's participation at the Whitney Biennial New York City in 2004. Presents Jack Pierson's "Every Single One of Them". Photographs of men who are now identifiable with his vision of masculine beauty. The portraits are vibrant despite their Minimalist design: There are no props or elaborate setups. There is no text. There are no installations. The collection's relentless focus is on the men, with emphasis on their underwear. Pierson's fetishistic obsession with men's underwear is unmistakable: Their colors, shapes, sizes, bulges, how skimpy, sexy, and revealing they are. He has photographed hundreds of men in the course of his restless, peripatetic travels. He is drawn to "not-fashion-model" types, and in the photographs of Brad Pitt, Casper van Dien, and Val Kilmer, Pierson sees even the most celebrated sex symbols of our time in his own personal way: The men are good-looking, but of the kind that grows on you and needs to be discovered underneath the disheveled hair, casual clothes, and seemingly indifferent attitude. The more dangerous they look, the more the viewer is drawn to rather than repelled by them. An absolute "must-have" title for Jack Pierson collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Jack Pierson. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in plate. This title is a contemporary erotic art photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Limited Edition available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies of the Deluxe Edition now command $1500 from the publisher and online. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 280 color plates. Jack Pierson: Tomorrow's Man 3

Imprint: Toronto, Canada, Bywater Brothers Limited, 2015
Edition: First Edition

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. Unpaginated. Artist Book. Collection of male nudes. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original in two Variant Covers only. This is the "Full-Frontal Male Nude" Cover Variant. It is now rare. A brilliant production by Jack Pierson and Roger Bywater: Regular-sized volume format. Glossy pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. The Series consciously mimics (and pays tribute to) the original "Tomorrow's Man" physique magazine of yore. Photographs and art by Jack Pierson. Text by various contributors. Printed on glossy stock paper in Canada to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Jack Pierson's "Tomorrow's Man" Volume 3. His most explicit male nudes ever. The design mimics the "Tomorrow's Man" physique magazine (which Andy Warhol, among many others, patiently and meticulously collected, discovering Joe Dallesandro in the process), with a brilliant twist: All of the models who have posed nude for Pierson are legitimate supermodels, of fashion and magazine pictorials, whereas the real Tomorrow's Man models were not. They were, in fact, often underground figures who were hustlers, even criminals (albeit handsome). It is visible proof, if it were needed, of mainstream acceptance of male nudity and overtly homoerotic content. The nudes are juxtaposed with "bleed" color photographs of Pierson's work in other media (still lifes, installations, sculptures, and abstract paintings) that are all beautifully reproduced. Being born to be an artist and to take photographs happened at a very young age in Pierson's case. He became an established artist with a loyal following in his early 20's, a rare occurrence in the ruthless and highly competitive art world. The artist/photographer's nudes evoke masculine beauty in a way that is redolent of memory, the passage of time, and ultimately, mortality. Nan Goldin and Jack Pierson are often compared to each other, and they are indeed kindred spirits. But while Goldin's images are powerfully raw and gritty, Pierson's are serene, contemplative, and lyrical even (or perhaps, especially) at their saddest. An absolute "must-have" title for Jack Pierson collectors. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the "Full-Frontal Male Nude" Cover Variant First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: It should not be confused with the more common "Male Nude On The Beach" Cover Variant. A rare copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates. One of the most brilliant American artist/photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JACK PIERSON TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0993856756.

Pigozzi, Jean (Photographer) & Sottsass, Ettore (Designer/Contributor)
A Short Visit To Planet Earth: Jean Pigozzi Photographs

Imprint: New York City, NY, Aperture Foundation, 1991
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. Unpaginated. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the most brilliant portrait-photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Jean Pigozzi and Yolanda Cuomo: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial cloth boards with black titles on spine, as issued. The design on the boards is by Ettore Sottsass, one of the greatest architects of the 20th century and close friend of the photographer, and it is dazzling. Photographs by Jean Pigozzi. Introduction by Ettore Sottsass. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Jean Pigozzi's "A Short Visit To Planet Earth". Photographs of everything that has caught the wandering, penetrating eye of THE bon vivant par excellence of our time. "A visual diary of our times which is star-studded, witty, and a bit bizarre. An international insider whose candid photographs of his famous and infamous friends (from Mick Jagger to Gianni Agnelli) make him a paparazzo in style only. His camera reveals, but never betrays. His humor tweaks, but never wounds" (Publisher's blurb). The most inspired section is the collection of self-deprecating portraits that show him posing with celebrities, "photo-souvenir" style. In all of them, Pigozzi cozies up with the celebrity, and then brags: "Here I am with Isabella Rossellini. Eat your heart out". Which makes these portraits the exact opposite of the paparazzi's, invasive outsiders who could never ever come close to their subject-targets. That's because Pigozzi was himself a reigning celebrity among the Rich, Creative, and Famous (his ethos, if that is the right word, harks back to Lartigue), who knew all his subjects well, hobnobbed with them as their equal if not superior, and was as rich as - richer than - many, if not most, of them. As such, his photographs are unique in the history of photography as a record, for better and for worse, of our dominant celebrity-cum-entertainment culture. An absolute "must-have" title for Jean Pigozzi collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (in the year of publication) in black ink-pen on the title page by the photographer: "Jean Pigozzi N. Y.1991". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, placed, and publication-year dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 285 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the most stunningly beautiful photography books of its kind ever published. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only by a University Press. The book is magnificently produced, with pictorial hard boards, definitive essays, and truly great photographs reproduced on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents "The Light In Cuban Eyes". The definitive book on its subject thus far. "In 2002, art collector and philanthropist Madeleine P. Plonsker began traveling to Cuba to uncover Havana's thriving art scene. Focuses on Cuban photography between 1992 and 2012. These years cover Cuba's 'Special Period', a desperate time resulting from the withdrawal of financial support from the former Soviet Union that continues to present day. The fifty artists represented in this bilingual book, including Juan Carlos Alom, Adrian Fernandez Milanes, Marta Maria Perez Bravo, Cirenaica Moreira, and Glenda Leon, shoot their worlds in styles ranging from fabulist to gritty. This is world-class work yet the artists are often known only to the small population of collectors fortunate enough to have traveled to this tightly restricted country or through art-world reputations that have only recently started to expand beyond the island" (Publisher's blurb). "The range of photographers and their magnetic images reminds us of the complexity of contemporary Cuban culture. This is a book that reflects unique qualities about this special island, its sense of place and people, while also claiming a place for this array of work within the context of the best photography in our day" (The Wall Street Journal). Well, Juan Carlos Alom, to cite only the most obvious example, is a certified, bona fide world-class artist/photographer. His sublime photographs are in major museums in the United States and Europe. They are unbelievable in their power, originality, and beauty. Simply put, for all their worldly success, there are very few contemporary American photographers of comparable stature and achievement as Alom (at least to connoisseur American and European eyes). Even Larry Clark, who has visited Cuba, says so. An indispensable guide to a great photographic culture emergent and in due course, regnant. The United States and Cuba restored diplomatic relations on Monday, July 20, 2015, after a fifty-four-year rupture. An absolute "must-have" title for photography book collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by Madeleine P. Plonsker and all of her curator/writers: Pedro Abascal, Nelson Ramirez de Arellano Conde, Michael Weinstein, and James Quine. This title is a contemporary photography classic. This title will become a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such multi-signed and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Down At Theresa's...chicago Blues: The Photographs Of Marc Pokempner

Imprint: Munich, Germany, Prestel Verlag, 2000
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 95 pages. The photographer's breakthrough debut collection. One of the finest photography books on music ever published. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. According to the photographer himself, less than half of its full print run was completed. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Marc PoKempner and Prestel Verlag: Oversize-volume format. Ribbed hard boards with red titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Marc PoKempner. Essay by Wolfgang Schorlau. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Munich, Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Marc PoKempner's "Down At Theresa's...Chicago Blues". Evocative, riveting, and vibrant photographs that capture the people and atmosphere of Theresa's Lounge in Chicago, the world's most legendary venue for blues music. The images throb with the energy and vitality that characterized the Blues Era, when such legends as Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, and Jimmy Rogers, among others, performed at the lounge. As Wolfgang Schorlau writes, all popular music, especially rock n' roll, originated with the blues, which has not necessarily been surpassed, at least not according to aficionados like Schorlau and Luc Sante, the brilliant American writer who has written at length on the music ("Kill All Your Darlings"). Considering the number of great photography books on American music by talents as diverse as Ed van der Elsken, William Claxton, Lee Friedlander, and Bruce Weber, among others, Marc PoKempner has pulled off a neat triumph. But it would be a pity if his book were collected only by blues, jazz, or American music aficionados. Like the work of his predecessors, the best photographs in this collection are among the very best ever taken of an authentic art form invented in America (rather than borrowed from Europe) and as such, is expressive of American roots and ideals. An absolute "must-have" title for Marc PoKempner, music, and photography book collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed in black pen-marker on the front free endpaper by the photographer: "Here's the nitty gritty from the Windy City. Inside views of the real Chicago blues! Marc PoKempner". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. There is no recipient named. Evocative, riveting, and vibrant images of landmarks, places, and people that capture the ambience and beauty of the city and surrounding environs. Whoever came up with the idea was a genius: Instead of commissioning new, tourist-y photographs of the city to promote it to Hollywood and International film location scouts, as is the habit, the state gathered together and reproduced existing photographs (culled from Chicago galleries, various sources, and private collections), all of them taken freely and independently by Chicago-based photographers, who know the city best, and care about it the most. Seven of Marc PoKempner's iconic photographs are among 70 images that showcase Chicago, adjacent surburbs, and small towns for consideration by film producers. Polotan, Kerima
Stories By Kerima Polotan

Imprint: Manila, Philippines, Bookmark Inc., 1968
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 195 pages. Retrospective collection of short stories. One of the finest short story collections of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Kerima Polotan's "Stories". Written over a twenty-year period (between 1948 and 1968) : An arc of eleven, award-winning stories that begins with apprentice work then builds up to masterwork. Selected and arranged by the author herself, the stories, while self-contained, trace and illuminate her development as a writer, from the lyrical evocation of adolescent female confusions in "This Door" and "The Trap" to the unsparing and un-sentimental dramatization of her place and destiny in "The Virgin" and "Cost Price", and finally to the intricate, luminous, and complex narratives of "The Sounds of Sunday" and "A Various Season". The comment by the American critic Edward M. Potoker that Polotan's theme is "pastoral virtue versus urban corruption" is simplistic and ultimately wrong. As she herself writes, Polotan is uncompromising about life, rural or urban: "I have often been accused of patterning my fiction after true-to-life incidents, which is not quite the truth. Life, I am happy to say, has spared me nothing, and I have, in turn, given it no quarter. I have written for the simplest reason: It is what I can do, it is my life" (Kerima Polotan). Polotan's tough-minded yet generous writing exposes the mediocrity of contemporary writing for what it is: Sterile prose, undergraduate philosophizing, Marvel Comics fantasy-narratives. Kerima Polotan died on August 19, 2011, and will not be replaced. An absolute "must-have" title for Kerima Polotan collectors. This title is a classic. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Polotan, Kerima
The Hand Of The Enemy

Imprint: Manila, Philippines, Regal Books/Erewhon Bookshop Distributors, 1962
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 120 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most important novels of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Kerima Polotan's "The Hand of The Enemy". Her - and her marginal culture's - finest achievement. From a culture that is derivative at best, imitative at worst, productive rather than creative, how is Polotan's masterpiece possible? It is important to bear in mind that at the time of its publication, the Philippines was one of the most prosperous nations in Asia, a vibrant, if fragile, democracy that enjoyed unprecedented economic growth, American financial largesse to its only colony and World War II ally, and a culture that supported Philippine writing in English. The external factors that help make a masterpiece possible cannot be overestimated precisely because the latter comes into being to challenge a modernizing nation's intrinsic soul. Once compared to Sartre (wrongly) and Heinrich Boll (rightly), Polotan is an original: Going against the normative "naive-sentimental" grain, Polotan writes un-sentimentally and indeed, scathingly about love, the impossible demands it makes on human beings, and its fundamental incompatibility not just with personal ambition, but with the harsh realities of life. For Polotan's indelible protagonist Emma - she has the same name as Madame Bovary -, love is the sole reason for being. It's what we're here for. Its enemy, whose hand prevails in the end, is life itself. By all means, one should seize whatever saving grace life has to offer, be it the glory of literature, the pleasures of art, the consolation of religious faith, and most tangible of all, worldly success. Life is essentially a trade-off, and one must never ever have any illusions about the trade-offs one makes. Polotan saves her most withering words, in passages of great descriptive power, for those who think they can have it all. The bleakness of Polotan's vision is only somewhat relieved by the generosity of her soul. She cares about her characters, mourning rather than condemning, their failings. Whereas almost everyone else writes in the "Creole" style (the flowery Philippine language infused with Spanish Baroque), her lean and elegant prose makes Polotan the greatest stylist in English the Philippines has ever produced. Polotan's tough-minded yet generous writing exposes the mediocrity of contemporary writing for what it is: Sterile prose, undergraduate philosophizing, Marvel Comics fantasy-narratives. "A man follows something more urgent than himself" (Kerima Polotan). Kerima Polotan died on August 19, 2011, and will not be replaced. An absolute "must-have" title for Kerima Polotan collectors. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and despite its imperfection (closed and open tears on DJ, slight fading on DJ spine) is still in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare copy thus. The greatest Philippine writer in English of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KERIMA POLOTAN TITLE IN OUR CATALOG).

Edition: First Edition

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare "Port"-"Royal" mini-CD release. Limited Edition of 222 numbered copies. A brilliant production by "Port"-"Royal" and Pascaline Knight: Pocket-sized format. The CD measures 3 inches and can be played on a regular CD player (by being placed in the center). Music by "Port"-"Royal". Encased in inner protective plastic sheet. Cardboard case with stunningly beautiful artwork by Pascaline Knight on the cover, as issued. Presents the hypnotic, cutting-edge, and sublime music of the idiosyncratically inventive Italian group. The band insists on its name being spelled in lower case, with a dash, and quotation marks precisely because it subverts existing computer software programs that take control of your writing/spelling options: "port"-"royal". If you really love their music, the least you can do is oblige, with your integrity intact. There are five tracks, including two remixes: "Stasi", "The Beat of the Tiger", "Song of Megaptera", "Zobione pt. 1" (Landing remix), and "Zobione pt. 2" (Millimetrik Arctic remix). "Port"-"Royal" bids to be the future of rock. The Genoa-based post-rock band was formed in 2000 by Attilio Bruzzone (guitar and keyboards) and Ettore Di Roberto (piano). They were eventually joined by Michele Di Roberto (drums), Emilio Pozzolini (keyboards, sampling), and Giulio Corona (bass). Like the ambient nature of their music, the band itself is fluid, with the members working off and on, and in collaboration with other groups, as they do in this CD. Only Attilio Bruzzone, Ettore Di Roberto, and Emilio Pozzolini were involved in the present CD. Sieva Diamantakos joined the band in 2007 while Michele Di Roberto and Corona have since left, in 2005 and 2008 respectively. Their music starts out as fully written songs, of which some will form the melodic basis of the final track while others are discarded altogether. Celebrated for their unique approach to music, they have an ardent global cult following. This is dazzling music, blending primordial dynamics with state-of-the-art electronic sound. An absolute "must-have" item for "port"-"royal" and contemporary music lovers/collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the inside limitation in black pen: "151/222". This title is now collectible. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Andrew Porter's "Music of Three Seasons 1974-1977". The second retrospective collection by the greatest music critic in the Western tradition of the second-half of the 20th century. All of the pieces originally appeared in slightly different form in The New Yorker Magazine. Five volumes, published in chronological order, were published in all. The New Yorker invited the London-based Porter on a "trial" basis, initially to cover just one season that eventually became "A Musical Season: A Critic From Abroad In America" (1974). He stayed on for almost twenty years, helping to cement with his presence New York's supremacy as the arts and music capital of the 20th century. His near-weekly reviews and extended essays on music, thankfully collected for posterity in his retrospective volumes, are unsurpassed to this day. "Nobody reviewing in America has anything like Porter's command of it. Nor has The New Yorker ever before had access through music to so distinguished a mind" (Virgil Thomson). "One of the exceedingly rare examples of a scholar who is also a perceptive critic of the highest rank" (The New Republic). "No critic in the magazine's history - not Edmund Wilson, not Lewis Mumford, not Pauline Kael - possessed greater authority in his or her field" (Alex Ross). Porter's specialty was the human voice and its miraculous range in song, opera, theater, spectacle, and drama, culminating in his magisterial English translation of Wagner's "Ring" (Porter translated thirty-seven operas in all, and was also a world-class scholar). He was incurably curious and passionate about new music, that is, the music of our time, and one of the contemporary composers he discusses at considerable length in this volume is Ernst Krenek. Andrew Porter died on April 3, 2015 at the age of 87, a permanent loss. An absolute "must-have" title for Andrew Porter collectors. This is (was) the personal copy of the great composer Ernst Krenek, and it is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the front free endpaper by him. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great collection. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and despite its imperfection (slight wear on DJ) is still in especially fine condition: Every single internal page is clean, crisp, and bright. The cloth boards are sharp, no bumping at all. Please note: Krenek's signature is TINY. But it's there, and it's rare. Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest music critics of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ANDREW PORTER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0374216460.

Everybody Pays: Two Men, One Murder And The Price Of Truth

Imprint: New York City, NY, G. P. Putnam's Sons, 2001
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 276 pages. The authors' nonfiction account on subject. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Rick Kogan's and Morris Possley's "Everybody Pays". Relentless and riveting. "When Chicago's deadliest hit man, Harry Aleman, was brought to trial in the late 1970s, not a single one of the city's more than 1, 000 mob-related murders had been solved. This time, with a witness willing to testify, prosecutors believed they had a fool-proof case. But the mob was difficult to catch for more reasons than one: A strict code of silence, witnesses who turned up dead, cops and even judges under their control. Bob Lowe, the lone witness to the murder Aleman was tried for, learned this the hard way. Aleman was acquitted the first time around and wasn't retried (and convicted) until 20 years later. Meanwhile, Lowe and his family were forced to go into hiding not once but twice, and their lives were destroyed. Maurice Possley and Rick Kogan have written a searing portrayal of the mob's skewed moral universe, the legal system it corrupted, and a witness-protection system riddled with flaws. In this charged and ultimately redemptive story, only one man emerges a hero" (Lesley Reed). Everybody pays, but one pays the highest price. An absolute "must-have" title for crime non-fiction collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in black pen on the title page by the authors: "My new best friend! Morris Possley. Two books! I love you! Rick Kogan". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Despite the very personal message, there is NO recipient named. Powers, Richard
The Gold Bug Variations

Imprint: New York City, NY, William Morrow & Company, 1991
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 640 pages. The author's third novel. One of Richard Powers' finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Richard Powers' "The Gold Bug Variations". The title being a sly allusion to Johann Sebastian Bach's "The Goldberg Variations", one of the greatest achievements of Western Classical music tradition. This speculative yet rigorous meditation on what it means to be human rings - sounds - true. The title, and its contrapuntal inspiration, are beautifully realized by the novel: "A double love story of two young couples separated by a distance of twenty-five years. Stuart Ressler, a brilliant young molecular biologist, sets out in 1957 to crack the genetic code. His efforts are sidetracked by other, more intractable codes - social, moral, musical, spiritual - and he falls in love with a member of his research team. Years later, another young man and woman team up to investigate a different mystery: Why did Ressler suddenly disappear from the world of science? Strand by strand, these two love stories twist about each other in a double helix of desire" (Publisher's blurb). Richard Powers is a unique voice in American literature: A committed novelist of ideas, he has described the novel as a "supreme connection machine, the most complex artifact of networking that we have ever developed". An absolute "must-have" title for Richard Powers collectors. This is a Review Copy. The Review Material is laid-in. This title is a great book. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked yet command up to $795. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. Congo Stories: Battling Five Centuries Of Greed And Exploitation

Imprint: New York City, NY, Grand Central Publishing, 2018
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 335 pages. Book-length account on subject. One of the most important books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The book is very beautifully produced, with pristine-white cloth boards, numerous photographs of contemporary Congo by Ryan Gosling, the Hollywood actor and heartthrob, who (not only) lent his name to the project and whose images form an integral part of the book, and Contributions by Dave Eggers and others. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents John Prendergast's, Fidel Bafilemba's, and Ryan Gosling's "Congo Stories: Battling Five Centuries of Greed And Exploitation". Unmasks the sordid way in which the people and resources of the Democratic Republic of Congo were used to build, develop, advance, and safeguard the United States and Europe - and the unrepayable price the Congo has paid for that exploitation. Then, more hopefully, it shows the rapid and positive change taking place there: "The people of Congo are fighting back against a tidal wave of international exploitation and government oppression to make things better for their nation, their neighborhoods, and their families. They are risking their lives to resist and alter the deadly status quo. And now, finally, there are human rights movements led by young people in the United States and Europe building solidarity with Congolese change-makers in support of dignity, justice, and equality. Fidel Bafilemba, Ryan Gosling, and John Prendergast traveled to Congo to document some of the stories not only of the Congolese upstanders who are building a better future for their country, but also of young Congolese people overcoming enormous odds just to go to school and help take care of their families. Through Gosling's photographs of Congolese daily life, Bafilemba's profiles of heroic Congolese activists, and Prendergast's narratives of their extraordinary history and the evolving social movements, 'Congo Stories' provides windows into the history, the people, the challenges, the possibilities, and the movements that will change the course of Congo's destiny" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for John Prendergast, Fidel Bafilemba, and Ryan Gosling collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the half-title page by (from top to bottom) : John Prendergast, Fidel Bafilemba, Ryan Gosling, and Chouchou Namegabe. Prince, Richard
Adult Comedy Action Drama

Imprint: Zurich, Switzerland, Scalo Publishers, 1995
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 240 pages. Artist Book. Now considered a contemporary art photography classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the Second Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Richard Prince and Hans Werner Holzwarth: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 3 pounds. Blue hard boards with blue titles printed on spine, as issued. Photographs taken and collected by Richard Prince. List of Captions appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Zurich, Switzerland to the highest standards. In blue-toned pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Richard Prince's "Adult Comedy Action Drama". Seminal. The ultimate "post-modern" self-portrait of the artist/human being as acquisitive, wide-ranging yet discriminating consumer/buyer: Books, television, pornographic magazines, comics, photobooks, tapes, CD's, "found" images (especially other photographs) as well as family, sex, landscapes, adult, comedy, action, drama. Everything and everybody can be had, turned into an object, a possession, and a purchase in our advanced consumer capitalist culture. Critics who dismiss Richard Prince's book as "shallow" miss his point. This is contemporary life, not just a passing cultural moment, presented as it really is, perversely but also subtly and wittily. Prince's formal use of the color blue is brilliant; his blue-bathed images are a nod to Pablo Picasso's Blue Period, Yves Klein's International Klein Blue (IKB), William Gass' great essay, "On Being Blue", and Kieslowski's great film, "Trois Couleur: Bleu". If Blue were a person, he (or she) would be an artist. If Blue were a thing, it would be the evocative objects that others have created and Prince has collected. There is a correspondence between Prince's acquisitiveness and his acquisitions that the color blue captures in all its melancholy beauty. By dispensing altogether with text, "Richard Prince's contribution to photographic literacy may be the most significant of the past few decades" (Neville Wakefield). Acute, illuminating, and indispensable towards understanding and appreciating the aesthetics of the photographer-as-collector and art-as-appropriation. An absolute "must-have" title for Richard Prince collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare copy thus. 235 color plates. Richard Prince's "Adult Comedy Action Drama" was selected as one of the "Seminal Photography Books of the 20th Century" in the "Book of 101 Books". One of the most influential American artists of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER RICHARD PRINCE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1881616363.

Probst, Ken (Photographer) & Homes, A.M. (Contributor)
Pornographic/"por'ne-graf'ik"

Imprint: Santa Fe, NM, Twin Palms Publishing, 1998
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 102 pages. Landmark collection of sex pictures. Now considered a contemporary erotic art photography classic. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 50 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with the Limited Edition of 4000 copies. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Ken Probst and Jack Woody: Regular-sized volume format. Glossy red hard boards with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Ken Probst. "Ballad For the Beautiful Boy, Or Why I Like Photography" by A. M. Homes. Original 10 X 8 inch photographic print mounted on pristine-white boards and laid into the box. Black cloth clamshell box. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its Deluxe Edition format, Ken Probst's "Pornographic". One of the most unusual erotica books ever published: "Behind-the-scenes" photographs of porn stars "in action". Popularly (and aptly) known as The Valley, an actual place as well as the metaphorical opposite of The Heights of Hollywood, American pornography is a multi-billion-dollar industry and one of this puritanical country's biggest exports. Probst was hired to photograph film actors for publicity pictures and video boxes. Once on the sets, he began to photograph behind-the-scenes, revealing the absurdity, pathos, and humanity of the business. Despite its ironic stance, it is a highly erotic collection, and provides a remarkable glimpse of the mechanics of manufacturing desire. That is why the original print that the Deluxe Edition comes with is stunning: The cameraman is visible in the foreground but only as a silhouette while the male actors (who are in the throes of anal sex) in the background are brightly lit, reversing the focussed foreground/blurred background photographic convention, in keeping with Probst's point about the "behind-the-scenes" versus "in action" dynamic of desire. An absolute "must-have" title for Ken Probst collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the Back Limitation Page (Number 50/50), the very last, and therefore most collectible, copy. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the page opposite the very first plate by Ken Probst. It comes with an original 10 X 8 inch photographic print that is mounted in white boards, also very prominently and beautifully numbered, titled, and signed in pencil by the photographer: "Brad & Corey 50/50 Ken Probst". This title is an erotic art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Deluxe Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Pron, Patricio (Translated by Mara Faye Lethem)
My Fathers' Ghost Is Climbing In The Rain

Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 2013
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 220 pages. The author's first novel to be translated into English. One of the most important literary events of our time. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the British Edition, which is a softcover original only. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Patricio Pron's "El espiritu de mis padres sigue subiendo en la lluvia" in a felicitous English translation. His brilliant breakthrough in English. "A young writer with memory loss returns home to Argentina to say good-bye to his dying father, a journalist. In reviewing the father's files, the son uncovers the older man's obsession with the disappearance and murder of a local man whose sister was 'disappeared' by the infamous Argentine military dictatorship in the brutal 1970's. In piecing together the mystery, the son-narrator learns that his parents led secret lives as leaders of an underground Peronist resistance movement. A melancholy and chilling work, examining family, memory, and what collective fear does to a society. Pron brilliantly draws a line from individual crime, which interests few, to the epidemic of social crime, which transforms generations" (Jonathan Schwartz). There are, by now, whole shelves of books on Argentina's Dirty War. Patricio Pron was a baby when the events in his book took place. His novel is thus a work of vicarious yet authentic remembrance, not of memory, as he could not possibly have any (hence the "memory loss" of his writer-protagonist and the title's evocation of "fathers", that is, elders, rather than just one father/parent), a work of re-imagination, and a work of art. An absolute "must-have" title for Patricio Pron collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, dated (shortly after publication), and placed in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "Patricio Pron NYC, 22.IX.2013". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Pron's whirlwind-signature is dazzling. Laid-in are pristine copies of the Souvenir Materials of the event during which his signature was obtained. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, placed, and post-publication dated copy of the First American Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Proulx, E. Annie
Accordion Crimes

Imprint: New York City, NY, Scribner, 1996
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 381 pages. The author's third novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Should not be confused with copies that are signed on a tipped-in page. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents E. Annie Proulx's "Accordion Crimes". Stunning. "A masterpiece of storytelling that spans a century and a continent. Proulx brings the immigrant experience in America to life through the eyes of the descendants of Mexicans, Poles, Africans, Irish-Scots, Franco-Canadians, and many others, all linked by a simple green accordion. The music they make is their last link with the past, voice for their fantasies, sorrows, and exuberance. Proulx's prodigious knowledge, unforgettable characters, and radiant language make 'Accordion Crimes' a stunning novel, exhilarating in its scope and originality" (Publisher's blurb). It took Annie Proulx a very long time to write and after that, get published. "Heart Songs" appeared when she was 58 years old. Once she found her voice, it resonated with such indelible force among critics and readers in a way that many writers who have been around practically all their lives can only envy, and admire. A radical departure from Proulx's familiar Western terrain, this novel is a triumphant achievement. An absolute "must-have" title for E. Annie Proulx collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Annie Proulx. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It should not be confused with the Limited Edition of 2500 copies, which are signed on a tipped-in page, desirable in its own right, but surely not as collectible as a copy signed in person by the author on the title page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Annie Proulx's signature is TINY. There are actually fewer signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition than the Limited Edition still available online, especially in this condition. Proulx, Annie
Bad Dirt: Wyoming Stories 2

Imprint: New York City, NY, Scribner, 2004
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 219 pages. The author's third collection of short stories. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Most of the pieces originally appeared in The New Yorker Magazine. Presents Annie Proulx's "Bad Dirt: Wyoming Stories 2". Her sequel to "Close Range: Wyoming Stories". It is good to be reminded that the author of "The Shipping News" inaugurated her writing career with "Heart Songs", a collection of short stories, and that she remains a contemporary master of the form. Like its predecessor, the whole collection is indispensable reading. "The eleven stories are of a piece with her earlier depictions of a hardscrabble state and its ornery, hard-bitten citizens. It is somewhat difficult to fathom the full nature of Proulx's popularity given her implacable vision of human nature as deeply flawed. In her stories, the humor is mordant, the landscape is crushing, and the people are taciturn. It may be that her odd, vivid language and her idiosyncratic plotting are entertaining enough to distract readers from the bleak subtext. Even when Proulx employs Magic Realism, there are no happy endings. Proulx's vision, like the Wyoming countryside she so meticulously describes, is unyielding" (Joanne Wilkinson). It took Annie Proulx a very long time to write and after that, get published. Her debut collection of short stories, "Heart Songs", appeared when she was 56 years old. Once she found her voice, it resonated with such indelible force among critics and readers in a way that many writers who have been around practically all their lives can only envy, and admire. "One of our best writers gives us her best book" (Kirkus Reviews). An absolute "must-have" title for Annie Proulx collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Annie Proulx. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. Barkskins: A Novel

Imprint: New York City, NY, Scribner, 2016
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 720 pages. The author's fifth novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly copies that are signed on a tipped-in page. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. A massive national bestseller, it remains available in multiple subsequent printings. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Annie Proulx's "Barkskins". Her first novel since "That Old Ace In The Hole" (2002), published fourteen years ago, lavished with critical and popular praise. "Proulx's characters are vivid, insistent, captivating. Nary a page goes by without a few exquisitely observed historical details. The temptation to consider 'Barkskins' under the rubric of Great American Novel is difficult to resist, given its scope. But Proulx's ambitions seem to be keyed differently. Melville's 'Moby-Dick', Twain's 'Huckleberry Finn', Morrison's 'Beloved', all of these books might be doomed in their respective attempts to somehow encompass the United States in its full complexity, but they at least focus on that burgeoning and manifold nation. Proulx, in contrast, establishes in 'Barkskins' a narrative so grand in spatial and temporal scope, so broad in theme, that it cannot conceivably be strictly American. Her pitch-perfect sentences encompass the entire Western world" (The New Republic). "An epic capstone to 80-year-old Proulx's impressive career, 'Barkskins' surpasses even the extraordinary 'The Shipping News' as her finest novel" (Cliff Froelich). An absolute "must-have" title for Annie Proulx collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Annie Proulx. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as copies available online are. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Annie Proulx's signature is TINY. But it's there. Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 1993 for "Postcards". Brokeback Mountain: The Film Tie-in Edition

Imprint: New York City, NY, Scribner, 2005
Edition: First Edition

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 55 pages. The author's novella-length short story. One of the greatest American short stories of our time. The First "Film Tie-in" Edition. Marks the first appearance of the title by itself in the United States. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The piece first appeared (sensationally) in The New Yorker Magazine's October 13, 1997 Issue. It was subsequently issued as a softcover original (in 1998 and in the United Kingdom only) and then collected, together with her other stories, as "Close Range: Wyoming Stories" (in 1999 and as a hardcover original only). It should also not be confused with "Brokeback Mountain: Story To Screenplay", which describes the story's process of original creation and subsequent adaptation. This First "Film Tie-In" Edition is now scarce. A lovely production by Erich Hobbing: Small-size volume format. Pictorial softcovers, which feature Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal on the cover, and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Text by Annie Proulx. Without DJ, as issued. Re-presents, in a special collectible edition, Annie Proulx's "Brokeback Mountain". Her best story. How a "woman writer" could write what is now considered the finest sexual/romantic story between two cowboys is a tribute to Annie Proulx's genius: Two ranch hands meet on a job and, without thinking about it, fall in love. High-school dropouts, they have lived very rough lives, are penniless, and desperately in need of work. Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist end up herding for the same sheep operation on Brokeback Mountain. Proulx describes the ever-escalating passion of their sexual encounters in the most explicit yet tender manner. The love affair ends when they reluctantly go their separate ways. Four years later, they are reunited as married men with children, and quickly pick up where they left off. How the story unfolds and finally ends is vintage, top-drawer Proulx. The basis of the award-winning film by Ang Lee, with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. An absolute "must-have" title for Annie Proulx collectors. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few copies of the First "Film Tie-In" Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Close Range: Wyoming Stories

Imprint: New York City, NY, Scribner's, 1999
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 283 pages. The author's second collection of short stories. One of the greatest short story collections of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by William Matthews: Regular-sized volume format. Black hard boards with green cloth spine and metallic-silver titles embossed on spine, as issued. Stories by Annie Proulx. Interspersed with six watercolor reproductions by William Matthews, the finest artist in the Western genre of our time. Printed on thick archival stock paper (for the text) and coated stock paper (for the art) in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Annie Proulx's "Close Range". Eleven stories, two of which are now regarded as masterpieces written at the close of the 20th century: "The Half-Skinned Steer" was selected as one of "The Best American Short Stories of the 20th Century" by John Updike. "Brokeback Mountain" was issued in the United Kingdom by itself, remains one of Proulx's most controversial and most beautiful stories (it is about the passionate romance between two cowboys), and is the basis of the great film by Ang Lee, with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. "Annie Proulx demonstrates what makes her great: Images sharp as paper cuts conveyed in language so imaginative and compressed, a sense of character so specific it takes only a sentence to establish a whole life and the underlying promise of something utterly unexpected up ahead". An absolute "must-have" title for Annie Proulx collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Annie Proulx. Proulx signed on top of the page, making it that much more prominent (especially considering how tiny her signature is). It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as many copies available online are. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Annie Proulx's signature is TINY. Copies available online have serious flaws. Because of "Brokeback Mountain", this title has become one of Annie Proulx's most collectible titles: A signed and inscribed copy fetched $3000 at auction in 2005, an incredible sum by any measure. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 1993 for "Postcards". Winner of the National Book Award in 1993 and the Pulitzer Prize in 1994 for "The Shipping News". One of the finest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. Annie Proulx herself now lives in Wyoming, but was closely associated with the evil-doers at the time of "Close Range" 's publication. "Close Range" is Proulx's finest collection of (eleven) short tories, two of which are now regarded as masterpieces: "The Half-Skinned Steer" was selected as one of "The Best American Short Stories of The 20th Century" by John Updike. "Brokeback Mountain", the now-classic story of the passionate and ultimately tragic romance between two cowboys, first appeared in the New Yorker Magazine, was first issued in book form in the United Kingdom by itself, and became the basis of the great film by Ang Lee in 2005, with the late Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. It remains Annie Proulx's single most beloved story. The book itself is lyrically interspersed with reproductions of six watercolors by William Matthews, the greatest American artist in the "Western" tradition of our time. "The wild country - indigo jags of mountain, grassy plain everlasting, tumbled stones like fallen cities, the flaring roll of sky - provokes a spiritual shudder. It is like a deep note that cannot be heard but is felt, it is like a claw in the gut" (Annie Proulx). An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Annie Proulx and William Matthews collectors. This Broadside is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black pen by Annie Proulx. It is also very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker by William Matthews. This Broadside sold out shortly after publication and is now collectible. It is eminently suitable for framing. As far as we know, this is one of only two signed copies available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Please note: Annie Proulx's signature is TINY. But it's there. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 1993 for "Postcards". Winner of the National Book Award in 1993 and the Pulitzer Prize in 1994 for "The Shipping News". One of the finest writers of our time. A flawless copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ANNIE PROULX TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Heart Songs And Other Stories

Imprint: New York City, NY, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1988
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 151 pages. The author's breakthrough debut collection of short stories and first book. One of the greatest American short story collections of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Annie Proulx's "Heart Songs And Other Stories". Nine of her finest short stories. "Before she wrote her Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller, 'The Shipping News', E. Annie Proulx was already producing some of the finest short fiction in the country. Here are her collected stories, including two new works never before anthologized. These stories reverberate with rural tradition, the rites of nature, and the rituals of small-town life. The country is blue-collar New England; the characters are native families and the dispossessed working class, whose heritage is challenged by the neo-rural bourgeoisie from the city; and the themes are as elemental as the landscape: Revenge, malice, greed, passion. Told with skill and profundity and crafted by a master storyteller, these are lean, tough tales of an extraordinary place and its people" (Publishers Weekly). It took Annie Proulx a very long time to write and after that, get published. "Heart Songs" appeared when she was 58 years old. Once she found her voice, it resonated with such indelible force among critics and readers in a way that many writers who have been around practically all their lives can only envy, and admire. An absolute "must-have" title for E. Annie Proulx collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Annie Proulx. At the time of its publication, the author retained her first initial, "E. Annie Proulx", and she signed this copy that way. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Annie Proulx's signature is TINY. Unlike other copies available online, it is not crudely stamped "Not For Sale" and is not remainder-marked. Copies online also have all kinds of other serious flaws. Puig, Manuel (Translated by Elena Brunet)
Pubis Angelical: The First English-language Edition

Imprint: New York City, NY, Aventura/Vintage Books, 1986
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 236 pages. The author's seventh novel to be translated into English. One of Manuel Puig's greatest achievements. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the British Edition, which appeared in 1987. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Manuel Puig's "Pubis Angelical" in a felicitous English translation. The follow-up to "Kiss of The Spider Woman", his sensational breakthrough novel in the English-speaking world. "Pubis Angelical" is proof, if it were needed, of a great author going from strength to strength. "With his characteristic panache and originality, Puig, writing at the height of his powers, gives us a tour-de-force of paranoia and sexual obsession" (Publisher's blurb). Apart from his innate theatricality, Manuel Puig was also a profoundly formalist writer. His novel seamlessly follows and weaves together the lives of two women from different periods in history. Manuel Puig's reputation is secure, and his place in world literature canonical: "Kiss of The Spider Woman" was the basis of the great film by Hector Babenco, with William Hurt in an Academy Award-winning performance. It was later adapted into a highly successful Broadway musical. "The Buenos Aires Affair" was the basis of the great film, "Happy Together", by Wong Kar-Wai. "Pubis Angelical" was adapted for the stage in London and New York to enormous critical acclaim. Manuel Puig died of AIDS in 1990, just a few years after he finally achieved the international acclaim he so richly deserved and craved. According to Roberto Bolano, whose critical acumen is trustworthy, this is another Puig masterpiece. An absolute "must-have" title for Manuel Puig collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the front free endpaper by Manuel Puig. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate, as many signed Puigs available online are. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First American Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: During his very brief lifetime, cut short by his fatal illness, Puig signed few copies of his books in person. Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MANUEL PUIG TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0394746643.

Presents "The Complete Prose of Alexander Pushkin: Novels, Tales, Journeys" in definitive English translations by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. All of the prose narratives of the greatest Russian writer of the Romantic Era, her greatest poet ever, and one of the world's greatest storytellers. "The Father of Russian literature, Pushkin is beloved not only for his poetry, but also for his brilliant stories, which range from dramatic tales of love, obsession, and betrayal to dark fables and sparkling comic masterpieces, from satirical epistolary tales and romantic adventures in the manner of Sir Walter Scott to imaginative historical fiction and the haunting dream-world of 'The Queen of Spades'. The five short stories of 'The Late Tales of Ivan Petrovich Belkin' are lightly humorous yet reveal astonishing human depths, and his short novel, 'The Captain's Daughter', has been called the most perfect book in Russian literature" (Publisher's blurb). "Our collection includes Pushkin's few finished and published works of fiction, each different, all masterpieces. It also includes his experiments in various forms, borrowing from and parodying well-known European models, consciously trying out the possibilities of Russian prose. The closest he came to a self-portrait is perhaps the character of Charsky in his fragmentary 'Egyptian Nights'. Otherwise he appears in person only in the non-fictional 'Journey To Arzrum' where, as D. S. Mirsky wrote, 'he reached the limits of noble and bare terseness' " (Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky). An absolute "must-have" title for Alexander Pushkin collectors. The Day Does Not Know The Dark Of The Night: The Photography Of Wu Qi

Imprint: Beijing, China, 798 Photo Gallery, 2007
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 150 pages. Artist Book. Collection of color photographs of the night and human night-life. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print as a softcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. None of the copies was commercially sold in the United States. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Wu Qi: Oversize-volume format. Gray softcovers with black titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Wu Qi. Essay by Li Mei, in the Chinese original and felicitous English translation. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in China to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Wu Qi's "The Day Does Not Know The Dark of The Night". His breakthrough debut collection. It is unmistakably his homage to Brassai and the latter's influential "Paris de Nuit". It is also a rarity as a photography book about the night because it is in vivid, rich, and abundant color (unlike Ken Schles' "Invisible City", to cite only one example, a black-and-white masterpiece). The text is deliberately hypnotic, particularly its repeated use of the word "night": "Night is the edge of darkness. Night is our desire for mystery and an expectation of unexpected things. Night is good at inspiring desire and inciting evil. Night includes soothing and pain, moaning and struggling. When you look at the night of Wu Qi, you see an attitude towards the night. Wu Qi's night is the night between him and the somniloquist. He is fascinated and dependent upon the night, and does not want to leave this darkness. He becomes one of the participants and producers of the night game. Wu Qi's night seems to tell people's confusion because they can depend on nothing. Most of the people roaming in the night will not find their destination. The night of Brassai is the record of a city's night, but Wu Qi's night is the expression of a personal inner darkness. He uses a kind of language to create a unique effect belonging to the night, enriching our visual narrative about the night" (Li Mei). Well, the images speak for themselves: Their sustained inspiration, in image after image, makes this a visually sumptuous and truly magnificent book that you will pore over again and again, night after sleepless night. An absolute "must-have" title for Wu Qi collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed twice (in Chinese characters and Roman block letters) and dated (on the day of publication) in black ink-pen on the title page by the artist/photographer: "Wu Qi 07.7". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great art photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and publication-day dated copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: None of the copies was commercially sold in the United States. A rare signed copy thus. 36 color plates. One of the most brilliant artist/photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. .

Alphabetabum: An Album Of Rare Photographs And Medium Verses

Imprint: New York City, NY, New York Review Of Books Classics, 2014
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 80 pages. Retrospective collection of vintage photographs of children, presented in alphabetical order. One of the most charming photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The book is brilliantly produced by the authors, with pictorial hard boards, red cloth overboards, an irresistible design layout that appeals to kids and grownups alike in its simplicity and elegance, and glossy stock paper that is printed in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Vladimir Radunsky and Chris Raschka's "Alphabetabum". Extremely, effortlessly charming. "An ALPHABET book? An ALBUM of old photos? We named it ALPHABETABUM. Here celebrated artists and authors Vladimir Radunsky and Chris Raschka put a delightful new old-fashioned spin on the alphabet book. Radunsky has selected portraits of children from his spectacular collection of antique black and-white photographs. Raschka has given the children names and written deliciously teasing rhymes about them. The result is ALPHABETABUM, a book of letters and pictures to which readers will happily return again and again both to look and to learn" (Publisher's blurb). It is said that there are more serious collectors of photographs of children than of photographs in general. This album gives an inkling why if so. An absolute "must-have" title for photography book collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white vintage plates. A fine copy. . ISBN 1590178173.

Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 70 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs on subject. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the Softcover Edition. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Robert Rauschenberg: Oversize-volume format. White linen cloth boards with metallic-silver titles beautifully embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Robert Rauschenberg. Essay by Colta Ives. Matching white linen cloth slipcase. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Robert Rauschenberg's "Photos In + Out City Limits: New York". The great artist's collection of black-and-white photographs on New York City. It is the partial fulfillment of his 30-year-old wish to photograph the entire United States, a project he never completed. Showcases his unique approach to photography as a process of discovery, selection, and assemblage of objects from everyday life. One of the least well-known facts about Rauschenberg is that he began his career as a photographer. He makes no distinction between his photography and his painting, and he brings the same acute eye to both. The photographs, like the paintings, are formally rigorous, sensuous, and piercing. His celebrated method of appropriating found images and objects to capture the fabric, tempo, and "feel" of modern life is photographically-inspired and characterizes his large body of work. The idea of appropriation is not unique to Rauschenberg. It is a central tenet of Surrealism and continues to be the latter Movement's enduring legacy. What makes Rauschenberg's work unique is the way he has "set in motion an interplay of shapes in which the human form is integrated to a rigorous yet flamboyant sense of design, pictures in which art and real life coincide" (Pontus Hulten). "A protean genius who showed America that all of life could be open to art. Rauschenberg didn't give a fig for consistency or curating his reputation; his taste was always facile, omnivorous, and hit-or-miss, yet he had a big-ness of soul and a richness of temperament that recalled Walt Whitman" (Robert Hughes). "Mine is the need to be where it will always never be the same again. Photography is the most direct communication of non-violent contacts" (Robert Rauschenberg). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Rauschenberg collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in charcoal pencil by Robert Rauschenberg. It is signed directly on the page, not on a tipped-in page. The signature beautifully matches the facsimile of his signature on the book's cover and title page. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Rauschenberg basically stopped signing books in the 1990's. Signed copies still available online are vintage, not recent, and few. Copies available online have serious flaws because the color white soils very easily. A rare signed copy thus. 70 tritone plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). .
