Steele-Perkins, Chris (Photographer); Velter, Andre & Majrouh, Sayd Bohodine (Authors)
Chris Steele-perkins: Afghanistan

Imprint: London, England, Westzone, 2001

Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 127 pages. Collection of photographs on subject. One of the greatest documentary photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Chris Steele-Perkins and Rose Design London: Oversize-volume format. Black hard boards with white titles on spine, as issued. Photographs by Chris Steele-Perkins. Introduction by Andre Velter. Poems, prose-poems, and narratives taken from "Ego Monstre" (by Sayd Bohodine Majrouh) are interspersed throughout the book with the images. All of the photographs are reproduced in miniature and appended at the end with Captions by the photographer. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Chris Steele-Perkins' "Afghanistan". His profoundly personal homage and celebration of Afghanistan, a place he visited numerous times in the course of five years. Throughout those years, the country was devastated by a succession of wars, as it still is today. The photographer is not trying to ignore the horrors of war. Still, he is right to realize that in order to do justice to this long-suffering country, the appropriate response is not a book of photojournalism, but a photography book that transcends journalism (while being grounded in it). His "message" is hopeful and as a result, the photographs are unforgettable rather than sensationalistic. Steele-Perkins seeks to capture the continuing cycles of everyday life despite the fact of war, resulting in a collection of images of wonder and violence, terror and joy. Excerpts from the masterpiece of the greatest Afghan writer of the 20th century, Sayd Bohodine Majrouh, who was assassinated in 1988, deepen the poignance of the book in a way that no journalistic commentary ever can. Steele-Perkins is one of the world's foremost photojournalists and served as President of Magnum between 1995 and 1999. He is best-known for his classic, "The Teds". To his credit, he realizes the drastic limits of journalism. "It was heroic, beautiful, violent, twisted, gracious, and tragic. The experience of being there works its way narcotically into one's being; an infection of the soul demanding that you return" (Chris Steele-Perkins). An absolute "must-have" title for Chris Steele-Perkins collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Chris Steele-Perkins. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 70 duotone plates. One of the greatest photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CHRIS STEELE-PERKINS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 190339113X.

Steele-Perkins, Chris
Fuji: Images Of Contemporary Japan

Imprint: New York City, NY, Umbrage Editions Book, 2002
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 132 pages. Landmark collection of color photographs. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Chris Steele-Perkins: Oversize-volume format. Red cloth boards with black titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Chris Steele-Perkins. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Italy to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Steele-Perkins' "Fuhi: Images of Contemporary Japan". Photographs of the dynamic and complex country that is modern Japan. Unlike any other documentary, landscape, or street photography (all of which he draws upon), Steele-Perkins has struck upon an arrestingly simple and unrepeatable idea for his portrait of a whole nation: Every single one of the photographs has Mount Fuji in it, visible in the background, looming over Japan, whether it's Tokyo, Kyoto, or a small town, village, and ricefield. It is easy to overlook what Chris Steele-Perkins has pulled off in these photographs, and his achievement therefore deserves to be emphasized: He has made us keenly aware once again of the background, which we have come habitually to ignore, especially when looking at photographs. His approach is subtle, cunning, and instructive in every image: Mount Fuji is the background in varying degrees of recession, sometimes looming over the horizon and too close for comfort, sometimes remote and distant, omnipresent yet never the foreground or main subject of the image. While the Eiffel Tower is the concrete visual symbol of Paris, it does not symbolize France whereas to every Japanese (and every tourist), Mount Fuji is the enduring symbol of Japan. The idea is unrepeatable because there is no other mountain that any other people have vested with such symbolism. Mount Fuji (its proper names are Fuji-san and Fuji-no-yama) was a central aspect of Japan's imperial (and ultimately disastrous) ambitions in the 20th century, remains a part of every important ceremony and sacred ritual to this day, and continually reminds the Japanese people that they have once risen mightily, fallen shamefully, and risen triumphantly again, an economic powerhouse and the most advanced artistic culture in Asia today. The British Steele-Perkins was born in Burma and has had a lifelong love affair with Asia. The idea for his book was inspired by Hokusai's masterpiece, "The Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji". Hokusai discovered the Western notion of perspective through Dutch etching and radically transformed the Japanese wood-block print. As strange as it may sound, his resulting prints have a depth of field that is best described as photographic, and part of Steele-Perkins' achievement is to show precisely that fact in his own images. "Hokusai would have welcomed him as a worthy successor" (Ian Buruma). An absolute "must-have" title for Chris Steele-Perkins collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Chris Steele-Perkins. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great art photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Stehli, Jemima (Artist/Photographer); Burrows, David & Santacatterina, Stella (Contributors)
Jemima Stehli

Imprint: Birmingham, United Kingdom, ARTICLE Press, 2002
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 32 pages. Collection of female nudes. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Jemima Stehli: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and photo-performances by Jemima Stehli. Essays by David Burrows and Stella Santacatterina. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "Jemima Stehli". Her nude self-portraits and striptease-performances. Stehli appears in most of the photographs (she is a very attractive woman), but like Vanessa Beecroft, with whom she is often compared, also uses other models. Her most famous work, "Strip" (1999/2000), is beautifully re-presented here. "Many of these compositions address the Lacanian affirmation, 'I see myself looking at myself'. In the series of photographs entitled 'Strip', she invited a group of male critics, including Adrian Searle and Matthew Collings, to pose with her. We see them sitting against colored backgrounds, illuminated by studio lights, and with the trigger of the camera in their hands. Between the critic and the camera stands the artist undressing herself, while the critic captures the event" (Stella Santacatterina). So that's who those nerdy-looking men are, eminences in the world of art, who have (to their credit) agreed to take part in photographic performances that capture Stehli's (Lacanian) "triad": The subject, the object, and the gaze. That is, during sex, all of us fantasize. Our fantasies are voyeuristic: We are looking at ourselves having sex with the person presently engaged or with someone else. In another brilliant suite, "After Helmut Newton", Stehli re-takes some of the most iconic images by Newton, a doubling effect that is literally presented as such: Both the photographer and the model are within each frame in a full-frontal portrait. Newton himself loved doubling; his most beautiful images involved mirrors and water, and their reflections. Part of his genius was to make the viewer's eyes inevitably wander from the subject to her object-reflection within the frame. Stehli is a Conceptual artist/photographer of the best kind: Her images possess a sensuous beauty, a lyrical softness around the edges, and a raw, feminine sexiness within each frame. An absolute "must-have" title for Jemima Stehli collectors. This copy is very prominently, discreetly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the page opposite the first image by Jemima Stehli. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. When you open the book, please lift the French flap, as you would a skirt: Voila! Her signature is right there. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 97 plates. Steiner, Ralph (Artist/Photographer) & Van Dyke, Willard (Contributor)
Ralph Steiner: A Point Of View

Imprint: Middletown, CN, Wesleyan University Press, 1978
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 144 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the most important and beautiful photography books of the 20th century. Deluxe Slipcased Edition of 20 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Limited Edition of 100 copies and the regular trade edition. There is no ISBN. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Ralph Steiner: Oversize-volume format. Gray cloth boards with metallic-silver titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Photographs by Ralph Steiner. Essay by Willard Van Dyke. 10 X 8 inch silver-gelatin print. Matching gray hard board slipcase. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its ultimate collectible format, Ralph Steiner's "A Point of View". His "summing-up". Selected, sequenced, and annotated by the photographer himself. Steiner is a rarity among photographers: His prose is as eloquent as his images. A seminal - but unpretentious and therefore underrated - multi-media artist, Steiner recounts his career in photography, film, and the arts. Born in 1899, Steiner is a key figure of the "threshold" moment in photographic history, namely its move away from its Pictorialist past, when it consciously mimicked painting, toward its alignment with Modernism, when it found its own voice. As such, he is rightly seen as the critical link between Alfred Stieglitz and Walker Evans, who credited him as a major influence. When commentators refer to his images as having "unusual angles", "weird subject matter", and "feverish abstractions" (which all anticipate Aaron Siskind), they mean Modernist aesthetics in practice. The single greatest photographic genre, "street photography", which Steiner helped jumpstart, is inherently and indeed purely "photographic" (as opposed to "painterly"). A major Photo League figure, Steiner is also closely identified with film: He began by making gravure plates for Robert Flaherty's "Nanook of The North". His first film, "H2O", a poetic evocation of water, is now considered a classic. Together with Paul Strand, he was the cinematographer of the definitive documentary on The Great Depression, "The Plow That Broke The Plains". Steiner co-directed "The City" with Willard Van Dyke, famously scored by Aaron Copland. "His pictures glowed with the juxtaposition of rich blacks and luminous whites" (Willard Van Dyke). An absolute "must-have" title for Ralph Steiner collectors. This is a copy of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition, indicated/numbered as such in black ink-pen on the front free endpaper by the artist/photographer: "5/20 Milwaukee Center For Photography Limited Edition". It is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black ink-pen by the photographer: "Ralph Steiner February 8th, 1978 (my 79th birthday) ". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. He also drew a lovely self-portrait, "Man With Camera", beside his birthday signature. This comes with a 10 X 8 inch silver-gelatin print (reproduced on Page 52) that is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and annotated in pencil on verso by the photographer. This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Deluxe Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Should NOT be confused with the Limited Edition of 100 copies and the regular trade edition. A rare signed copy thus. 100 plates, 1 original silver-gelatin print. One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. .

Matching salmon cloth clamshell box with photographic reproduction pasted on the cover. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated Japanese stock paper using Nazraeli Press' "Daido black" patented ink to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Mark Steinmetz's "Paris In My Time". His homage to Paris. Yet another photography book on Paris? Yes, exquisitely so, as Steinmetz shows us his most lyrically beautiful and personal work to date. "Paris was where his mother was born and raised, giving Steinmetz a special connection to and familiarity with the city. In the streets, parks, and along the Seine, Steinmetz plays with the conventions of the Paris photographic tradition from Atget to Kertesz. The work is Classical, but with a Modern feel that both updates the tradition and follows the path Steinmetz has set with his other books" (Publisher's blurb). Steinmetz's unique affinity for children (who dominate both his "South" Trilogy and "Summertime") and birds, two of the most vulnerable living beings, is in full view here. The passage of time itself is Steinmetz's subject, a felicitous one for a photographer who must turn time into place. P is for Paris, and for Mark Steinmetz, Paris = People, Place, and Pigeons. An absolute "must-have" title for Mark Steinmetz and Paris photography book collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition, indicated/numbered as such. It is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in pencil on the title page by Mark Steinmetz. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Deluxe Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 92 pages. Retrospective collection of black-and-white photographs. One of Mark Steinmetz's finest achievements. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 25 numbered and signed copies. As such, it is one of the smallest limitations by Nazraeli Press. Precedes and should not be confused with the regular trade edition, which has the same ISBN. An austerely elegant production by Mark Steinmetz and Chris Pichler: Oversize-volume format. Khaki cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted in front and black titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Mark Steinmetz. Introductory Essay by Anne Wilkes Tucker. 12 X 10.5 inch original photographic print laid-in. Matching cloth clamshell box. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its ultimate Deluxe Edition format, Mark Steinmetz's "The Players". His most evocative collection. "Photographs of adolescent and teenaged baseball players, on the field and in the dugout, focused on the game and lost in their own worlds. Made between 1986 and 1990, the photographs are classic Steinmetz: Tenderness, humor, and humanism are all present here, as is Steinmetz's exquisite use of natural light and attention to poetic detail. The kids are ages 6 to 13, with a few older boys. Steinmetz must remember how awkward and uncoordinated bodies that age can be. His empathy is evident throughout the series. Most of these kids are too young to have the grace, skill, or concentration required and are too 'green' to experience the sheer pleasure of knowing they are good, maybe really good, ball players in an unforgiving sport. These kids run into each other in pursuit of a fly ball. Hope drives their swings more than their awareness of the art of hitting. Steinmetz concentrates less on the players in the field than those outside the base lines who are waiting to play or cooling off. He observes the managers as well as the spectators who love the game or one of the players or who just have a free afternoon. He sees 'high fives' as well as the 'what were you thinking' moments" (Anne Wilkes Tucker). According to today's great players themselves, every Major League Baseball (MLB) player started out like one of these hopeful and talented kid-dreamers. The photograph of the little boy, his hands clasped together in prayer, is one of Steinmetz's most beautiful images. An absolute "must-have" title for Mark Steinmetz collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 25 copies, indicated/numbered as such by the publisher. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Mark Steinmetz. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This is the very last, and therefore the most collectible, copy of the Deluxe Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the 12 X 10.5 inch photographic print that is encased in its own protective plastic sleeve. The print is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully numbered and titled in pencil on verso by the photographer: "Mark Steinmetz Jacksonville, Illinois 1988 25/25". This title is a contemporary photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 133 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the best photography books of our time. Limited Clamshell Box Edition of 25 numbered and signed copies. None of the copies was commercially sold. The Limited Edition has the same ISBN as the regular trade edition. Black cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted on the recessed center in front, metallic-silver titles embossed on the spine and back, as issued. Photographs by Joseph Sterling. Introduction by David Travis. Original 10 X 14 inch photographic print laid into the box. Matching black cloth clamshell box. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Germany to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its most collectible format, Joseph Sterling's "The Age of Adolescence". One of the best photographic records of The American Teen-ager. "This Age sparkles with the promise of what's to come, hides its insecurities under the cover of bravado, and trembles with excitement about the here and now. From 1959 to 1964 (arguably the Adolescence of America itself), Joseph Sterling photographed teenagers, hanging out after school, at drive-ins, in fast cars. As Sterling himself defined it, 'the world of the adolescent is totally interlaced within itself and incapable of freeing itself. It whirls, rolls, and engulfs what it is allowed to engulf' "(Publisher's blurb). The "Age of Adolescence" shows American kids to be both playful and serious, friendly and menacing, cheerful and pensive. Some images anticipate the work of many contemporary photographers without their necessarily being aware of it. Their remarkable simplicity and effortless grace have re-appeared in so many images of young people ever since. Still, few photographs have the timeless appeal as Joseph Sterling's work. Closely identified with the Institute of Design (ID), Sterling has done work characterized by the technical perfection and formal experimentation identified with the Bauhaus-inspired Institute. Here, he lets go, and the result is simply wonderful. The design by Dimitri Levas, the designer of Bruce Weber's books, gives this book a contemporary look and feel that are compatible with the photographs. It is also, sadly, the last book published by Sterling, who died unexpectedly on November 12, 2010. An absolute "must-have" title for Joseph Sterling collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition, indicated, stamped, and hand-numbered as such on the front free endpaper. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Joseph Sterling. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with a stunningly beautiful 10 X 14 inch original photographic print that shows two teen-agers in a public beach shower (it appears on Page 90 of the book). The print is very prominently and beautifully archived, numbered, and signed in pencil on verso by the photographer: "486-25 Joseph Sterling Limited Book Edition T. A. O. L. 11/25". This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Limited Edition With Original Print available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Joel Sternfeld's "iDubai". Cell-phone images. Every page consists of three, actual-size reproductions of digital pictures that Sternfeld took using his Apple iPhone (hence the title). Since he is not just another iPhone user, his images capture a phenomenal social reality as no other photographer has thus far (except perhaps for Martin Parr, who has not, however, adopted the iPhone camera) : An exhaustive and exhilarating mobile gaze of a wholly man-made, artificial Paradise on Earth, fully realized in the desert cosmopolis of Dubai. There is nothing else in the world quite like Dubai: A wholehearted, total embrace of Western capitalism (in its most advanced consumerist phase) by a Middle Eastern/Arab kingdom whose values and culture remain, at least officially, orthodox Muslim. That more and more of Dubai's inhabitants are self-transplanted, permanent-resident Westerners is a testament to its magnetic allure (they help run the country efficiently). "What Parisian shopping arcades were to the nineteenth century and early-capitalism, Dubai's luxurious mega-malls are to the new millennium and late-capitalism. The Baudelairean flaneur, who patrolled the avenues as a detached observer, is today replaced by the 'phoneur', a wired wanderer who uses a cell phone to text, call, surf, and snap digital images on the fly" (Publisher's blurb). Sternfeld does show some of the workers who have made all of this possible, contract labor imported from Third World countries (just as all of the luxury goods are imported from the West), thereby offering a powerful visual critique of Dubai as the Persian Gulf's Disney World, "locating subtler social strata and interactions". An absolute "must-have" title for Joel Sternfeld collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated in black pen on the title page by the photographer: "Joel Sternfeld 10/19/15". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 70 color plates. Joel Sternfeld's "American Prospects" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the finest American photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOEL STERNFELD TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3865219160.

Presents Joel Sternfeld's "Stranger Passing". The turn-of-the-century sequel to Sternfeld's ground-breaking "American Prospects". A fresh and riveting view of contemporary American society, Sternfeld turns his exacting eye to American faces, social classes, character types and stereotypes. "Sternfeld devotes a remarkable volume to sixty hard-edged studies of individuals from Manhattan to Malibu to Austin to Appalachia, in snapshots and portraits that are by turns comic, disturbing, angry, pathetic, and silly" (Publishers Weekly). Robert Frank and William Eggleston come to mind right away, and their inescapable spirit illuminates (rather than dims) Sternfeld's vision. The cover image in particular is an homage to William Eggleston's famous portrait of a young supermarket worker. An absolute "must-have" title for Joel Sternfeld collectors. It is a suite of Pictorialist-inspired photographs that register and evoke our time. "Stivers extends, deepens, and complicates the themes of mystery and movement, sensuality and spirituality, and the search for individual identity. Stone, Robert
A Flag For Sunrise

Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 1981
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 439 pages. The author's third novel. One of Robert Stone's finest achievements. Review Copy. Review Materials, including an original silver-gelatin print, laid-in. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Robert Stone's "A Flag For Sunrise". Regarded by some critics and admirers as his best novel: A relentless, torrential descent into the abyss. Kept afloat by the air of inevitability it shares with the predecessor-novels of Joseph Conrad and Graham Greene, there are no pauses, no chapter breaks, as one expects of a full-fledged novel, and certainly of one that is nearly 500 pages long. "Saints and sinners compete in this nightmare, each with a different agenda. An ideological train wreck in which the ultimate victims are the disenfranchised. The name of the game is greed and the players are the usual suspects: Corporations, governments, a militia trained to fight insurrection, criminals, religious zealots, spies, and assorted operatives. Our personal guide is Frank Holliwell, an American anthropologist with CIA ties from his Vietnam days, visiting an invented Latin-American country called Tecan, ostensibly to give a lecture. Holliwell becomes one more pawn in a dangerous game with incredibly high stakes. Step into the chaos that jolts from one state of anxiety to another. Watch over your shoulder at every turn" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Stone collectors. This is a Review Copy. It comes with the Review Materials, including a 5 X 7 single-weight silver-gelatin print of the author's official portrait. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Robert Stone. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed Review Copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Illustrated by hundreds of never-before-seen photographs and documents from Stone's personal archive: Personal snapshots, private correspondence, annotated script pages, storyboards, behind-the-scenes photography, and production files from all of his films, including Stone's epic Showtime mini-series, 'The Untold History of The United States'. The title comes from Avrahm Yarmolinsky's book, "The Road To Revolution: A Century of Russian Radicalism" (1959). "I think it is time we began to appreciate Stoppard not for his intellectual legerdemain, but for what he is actually best at: Exploring the mystery of existence, the anguish of the human heart, and the strange fact that it is our apprehension of death that gives joy and intensity to life" (The Guardian). "A major work of theatrical craftsmanship, the singular narrative seductiveness of drama" (The New York Times). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 336 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Darin Strauss' "Chang And Eng". A brilliant debut. Born attached at the chest, Chang and Eng Bunker were the first to be called Siamese Twins. They were one of the 19th century's most legendary human oddities. "Narrated by Eng during the final moments of his life, 'Chang and Eng' follows the extraordinary lives of the twins from poverty to wealth, from hopeless solitude to boundless love, from the court of the King of Siam to the crowded bedroom of their North Carolina home. An unforgettable and sublimely moving story that reveals the longings and humanity of these remarkable twins" (Publisher's blurb). There is a whole library on the real-life characters. Darin Strauss seems to have read and sifted through them all, and found the true story. "One of the most riskily imagined and successfully realized novels I've read in years" (Joyce Carol Oates). An absolute "must-have" title for Darin Strauss collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Darin Strauss. Abide With Me: A Novel

Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 2006
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 298 pages. The author's second novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Elizabeth Strout's "Abide With Me". Her remarkable second novel. "The word 'remarkable' plays a crucial role in Elizabeth Strout's 'Abide With Me'. That word best describes the novel itself. A brave, rare book" (Nicholas Delbanco). Elizabeth Strout began publishing very late in life. She was a lawyer for many "utterly miserable" years before she finally decided, "No more law! I would rather fail miserably in life as a writer than be successful as a lawyer" (Elizabeth Strout). As such, she is a "mature" writer, the only writer worth reading, rather than a "flash-in-the-pan" prodigy although she has been writing all her adult life, her many lawyer years included. She is not a prolific writer at all: It took her eight years to write this luminous second novel. An absolute "must-have" title for Elizabeth Strout collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Elizabeth Strout. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Unlike her more recent signatures, it is signed in full instead of slightly abbreviated (although the latter signature is still very clear and legible, unlike most other authors'). Given the significant demand for signed copies of all her books, this is probably what the future holds. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. It is one of the most beautiful signed copies we have ever seen. Please note: Signed copies of the First Edition will always be rather scarce because according to the author herself, the first print runs of her first three novels were "tiny" (her word) and the books immediately went into paperback thereafter. A scarce signed copy thus. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for "Olive Kitteridge". One of the finest American writers of our time. A fine copy. Amy And Isabelle: A Novel

Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 1998
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 304 pages. The author's debut novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a tiny first print run as a hardcover original only. "Autographed Copy" round white sticker pasted in front. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Elizabeth Strout's "Amy And Isabelle". Her quietly triumphant debut. "Offers up a moving yet resolutely unsentimental portrait of people coming to terms with their lives, finding unsuspected nobility in themselves and unexpected kindness in others. A gem of a novel" (Alix Wilber). An absolute "must-have" title for Elizabeth Strout collectors. This Autographed Copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Elizabeth Strout. It is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful signed copies we have ever seen. Please note: Signed copies of the First Edition will always be rather scarce because according to the author herself, the first print runs of her first three novels were "tiny" (her word) and the books immediately went into paperback thereafter. Random House indicated its true firsts at the time of publication (1998) with a number line that began with 2. This practice did not change until 2005/2006, and even then on a very inconsistent basis. So this is a copy of the true first. Copies available online are remainder-marked or have serious flaws. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for "Olive Kitteridge". One of the finest American writers of our time. A fine copy. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly copies that are signed on a tipped-in page. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents Elizabeth Strout's "Anything Is Possible". The sequel-of-sorts to "My Name Is Lucy Barton" (2016), originally conceived and beautifully realized as such by the beloved author. "When Elizabeth Strout is on her game, is there anybody better? A generous, wry book about everyday lives, and Strout crawls so far inside her characters you feel you inhabit them. A book that earns its title. Try reading it without tears or wonder" (USA Today). "She paints cumulative portraits of the heartache and soul of small-town America by giving each of her characters a turn under her sympathetic spotlight" (National Public Radio). An absolute "must-have" title for Elizabeth Strout collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (on the day of publication) in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "Elizabeth Strout 4.25.17 NYC". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as many copies available online are. Strout also signed her name in full instead of her abbreviated signature (although the latter is still clear and legible when compared with those of most other authors'). It comes with a pristine copy of the Souvenir Announcement of the launch event during which her signature was obtained. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, placed, and publication-day dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Strout, Elizabeth
My Name Is Lucy Barton

Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 2016
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 200 pages. The author's fifth novel. Now considered a contemporary classic (by the New Yorker Magazine). The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly copies that are signed on a tipped-in page. Published in a small and limited first print run that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Elizabeth Strout's "My Name Is Lucy Barton". Her critically acclaimed bestseller. "Much of the joy comes from piecing together the hints and half-revelations in Strout's unsentimental but compelling prose, especially as you begin to grasp the nature of a bond in which everything important is left unsaid. Strout paints an indelible, grueling portrait of poverty and abuse that's all the more unnerving for her reticence. She reminds us of the power of our stories, and of our ability to transcend our troubled narratives" (The Miami Herald). Writing at her absolute peak, Elizabeth Strout has done it again: A reliable contemporary master of creating unforgettable characters, she opens up her novel to the reader in a way that seems familiar and "relatable", that pop-culture expectation. Then she aims and lands zingers that, after recovering from the hit, one can only marvel at and relish. An absolute "must-have" title for Elizabeth Strout collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "For Maggie, with warm wishes, Elizabeth Strout". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as copies available online are. The recipient, who is named, is personally known to the author. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed and inscribed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: This is Strout's very first bestseller upon publication. "Olive Kitteridge" became a national bestseller only AFTER its Pulitzer win, and all of her novels have had very small first print runs. So most copies available online are now subsequent printings. A scarce signed copy thus. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for "Olive Kitteridge". One of the finest American writers of our time. A fine copy. The Burgess Boys

Imprint: New York City, NY, Random House, 2013
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 270 pages. The author's fourth novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly copies that are signed on a tipped-in page. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. "Autographed Copy" round white sticker pasted in front. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Elizabeth Strout's "The Burgess Boys". A gem that will be regarded as a climactic achievement in her career. "With a rare combination of brilliant storytelling, exquisite prose, and remarkable insight into character, Elizabeth Strout has brought to life two deeply human protagonists whose struggles and triumphs will resonate with readers" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Elizabeth Strout collectors. This Autographed Copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (on the day of publication) in black pen on the title page by the author: "Elizabeth Strout 3.27.13". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as copies available online are. Unlike her more recent signatures, it is signed in full instead of slightly abbreviated (although the latter signature is still very clear and legible, unlike most other authors'). Given the significant demand for signed copies of all her books, this is probably what the future holds. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and publication-day dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Strout launched the book in New York City, but did not tour to promote the book. She pre-signed copies instead, making copies signed on the title page scarce. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for "Olive Kitteridge". One of the finest American writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ELIZABETH STROUT TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1400067685.

Struth, Thomas (Photographer) & Loock, Ulrich (Contributor)
Thomas Struth

Imprint: London, England, MACK Publishers, 2014
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 42 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of Thomas Struth's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. An austerely elegant production by MACK: Oversize-volume format. Purple cloth boards with white titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Thomas Struth. Essay by Ulrich Loock in the German original and felicitous English translation appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper (for the images) and archival, purple-color stock paper (for the text) in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is outstanding in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Published as part of the travelling exhibition, "This Place", held in 2014, curated by Frederic Brenner and participated in by twelve photographers, in order to document contemporary Israel and the West Bank. Presents "Thomas Struth". An eponymously titled (and indispensable) suite of photographs about a contentious subject, seen through the photographer's relentlessly detached gaze. "Brings together sixteen photographs of Israel and Israeli-occupied West Bank. Continues his practice of creating singular images, each within one of the strictly segregated subject-fields he has developed throughout his career: Street photographs, portraits, landscapes, and high technology. Each image carries the enduring complexity and visual distillation of human experience for which Struth is known. Approaching the sheer diversity and quiddity of the inhabited world, he attempts to represent what he has referred to as 'a particle of the conflict of the region', to photograph the political and social landscape" (Publisher's blurb). "Unified by strata of antitheses which reveal themselves as a matrix running through the work, as Struth attempts to grasp the circumscribed reality of a region where co-existence has failed, a reality that is, however, inaccessible to photography" (Ulrich Loock). It is easy to miss Loock's important point: Given what we have come to expect of the "cool" Struth-ian eye, the self-aware modesty of Struth's project is precisely what makes it unexpectedly moving - and a genuine contribution to Frederic Brenner's ambitious, multi-photographer project. He shows us Israel and the West Bank, but coolly and steadfastly refuses to make an overbearing or didactic comment on this very "hot" subject (as a "concerned" photographer might have done). An absolute "must-have" title for Thomas Struth collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in pencil by Thomas Struth. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 16 color plates. "Thomas Struth: Museum Photographs" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 150 pages. Exhibition Monograph. Now considered a modern photography classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the Softcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the 1998 Salander O'Reilly Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that did not exceed 500 copies. The Hardcover Edition is rare. Introduction, Notes, and Appendix by Anna Farova, the single most authoritative expert/scholar on Sudek. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Amsterdam, The Netherlands to the highest standards. The fidelity of the reproductions to the original prints is outstanding. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the travelling exhibition of the same name that was held in Europe and the United States from 1994 through 1996. Presents Josef Sudek's "Pigment Prints 1947-1954". A seminal aspect of the Czech photographer's oeuvre, which is now universally recognized as among the greatest photography ever undertaken by anyone in the 20th century. Josef Sudek remained in his native Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) throughout his long and stupendous career, spiriting out prints of his work, many of them just single copies, to friends like Anna Farova, so that his work will be in caring hands and not be forgotten. A reclusive man who shunned publicity, lived modestly, and remained loyal to his beloved country through thick and thin, Sudek's inner life was clearly the inexhaustible source of his work. When they first see a Josef Sudek photograph, many receptive people are moved to tears. Whether he did landscapes, street photographs, portraits, nudes, still lifes or inspired combinations thereof, Sudek left his indelible mark on the medium called the photograph. The Pigment Print process, which dates back to the earliest days of photography, is based on a complex (and tedious) technique. One of the enduring legacies of 19th-century photography, it is also called the Carbro Process, which Anna Farova explains in layman's language in an Appendix. In the hands of a Master like Sudek, the resulting images are visible on every page of this book. An absolute "must-have" title for Josef Sudek collectors. This title is a great art photography book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. 73 plates. Josef Sudek's "Praha Panoramaticka" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". "Josef Sudek Fotografie" was selected as one of the "Seminal Photography Books of the 20th Century" in "The Book of 101 Books". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. Gerardo Suter: Labyrinth Of Memory: The Retrospective Exhibition Monograph

Imprint: New York City, NY, Distributed Art Publishers (DAP), 1999
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 111 pages. Exhibition Monograph. One of the best retrospectives on the photographic art of Gerardo Suter. The first and only edition. Published in a tiny print run as a softcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The Exhibition Monograph is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Gerardo Suter: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine and large flaps, as issued. Art photographs by Gerardo Suter. Essays by Mary Schneider Enriquez and Olivier Debroise, the renowned scholar of 20th-century Mexican photography. Printed on glossy stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the travelling retrospective exhibition of the same name, which was organized by the Americas Society New York, and commenced at the Americas Gallery New York City on February 10, 1999. Presents Gerardo Suter's "Labyrinth of Memory". His very first solo exhibition in the United States. In his photographs and mixed-media installations, Suter employs themes and subjects, drawn from pre-Columbian myths and cultures, in order to create powerful and haunting metaphors of contemporary Latin-American personae. The exhibition ranges from early compositions of enigmatic landscapes and ruins to more dramatic male and female nude figures (wearing sado-masochistic masks and other ritualistic props) to monumental installations that combine photography with video and performance art. Born in Argentina in 1957, Gerardo Suter has lived in Mexico since 1970. Largely self-taught as an artist, he emerged as one of Latin America's most original voices in the early 1980's. Suter has become an influential figure for his move away from documentary photography towards a more expressive art that now includes innovative combinations of photographic images with video, installation, and performance. "His work explores themes of memory, nostalgia, and the persistence of the past in mysterious scenes of pre-Columbian architectural remains. These startling and compelling images seem to suggest the simultaneously fearful and tantalizingly sensual immediacy of Latin America's pre-Hispanic inheritance. Gerardo Suter has pushed the boundaries of straight photography, printing on sheets of transparent acetate, which are often combined to create enormous multi-panel images. He has incorporated these into room-sized installations along with sound and video elements, encompassing the viewer in enclosed, multi-sensory, and ritual environments. The depicted figures, less explicitly pre-Columbian in their references than those in the earlier series, have become more universal in their emotional charge. Evokes the primal forces of life and death and the dualities of human existence" (Elizabeth Ferrer). An absolute "must-have" title for Gerardo Suter collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (on the day of the exhibition and book launch) in black ink-pen on the title page by the artist/photographer: "Gerardo Suter N. Y. February 10, 1999". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great Exhibition Monograph. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Based in Mexico, Suter seldom ever signs his books. This is the only one we have ever found. A rare signed copy thus. 30 plates. One of the greatest artist/photographers of our time. Imprint: Vilnius, Lithuania, Maketavo R. Sutkiene/Soros Centre For Contemporary Arts, 1995
Edition: First Edition

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 70 pages. Retrospective Exhibition Catalog. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Antanas Sutkus: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and large front inside flap, as issued. Photographs by Antanas Sutkus. Essay by Raminta Jurenaite. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Moscow, Russia to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition of the same name held at the George Soros Centre For Contemporary Arts Lithuania in 1995. Presents Antanas Sutkus' "Nostalgia For Bare Feet". Humanist photography at its very best. A Classicist in the great tradition of 20th-century street photography, Antanas Sutkus is regarded as perhaps Lithuania's greatest photographer, her Cartier-Bresson. His focus on children will remind viewers of Cartier-Bresson and also, Helen Levitt, the crucial difference being one of place: Levitt captures New York City's grit and melancholy whereas Sutkus depicts Lithuania's rural, small-town charm, innocence, and natural beauty. Starting with the lovely cover portrait, every photograph in the collection is about a child or has a child in it. Of course, the camera loves children. Still, Sutkus' photographs of children are not sentimental. They are, instead, genuinely affecting, and will leave one moved upon first encountering them. Through them, Sutkus captures everyday life in his beloved Lithuania with clarity of vision and profound empathy. That his work is well-served by the stunning reproduction standards of Slavitch Printing Moscow needs to be said. Recipient of the Lithuanian National Prize, Antanas Sutkus was one of the founders and President of the Photography Art Society of Lithuania (Lietuvos fotografijos meno draugija). His work is quietly subversive: "Working at the time when Lithuania was part of the Soviet Union, Sutkus focussed on black-and-white portraits of ordinary people in their everyday life rather than the model citizens and workers promoted by Soviet propaganda". One of the most wonderful photobook discoveries for our paradoxical time of plenty-yet-empty photography, "Man's essence coincides with his vision in a way that can be rendered in a photograph" (Raminta Jurenaite). An absolute "must-have" title for Antanas Sutkus collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. Ginza Kaiwai/ginza Haccho: The 1954 First Edition

Imprint: Tokyo, Japan, Toho-Shuppan Publishing, 1954
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 364 pages. Two-volume book on subject. One of the greatest book discoveries of our time. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run in this unique format only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Toho-Shuppan: Boxed Set consisting of two volumes, both of which are encased in the publisher's original cardboard box. Volume One, "Ginza Kaiwai", is a book-length account on the world-famous Tokyo district. The text by Kimura Shohachi is interspersed with "ukiyo-e" woodblock print reproductions by Hiroshige, black-and-white photographs by Yoshikatsu Kanno, maps, and reproductions of original drawings. Publisher's original promotional leaflet laid-in. Publisher's original rice-paper-wrapped slipcase with pictorial labels pasted in front and on the spine. In publisher's original rice-paper DJ, as issued. Volume Two, "Ginza Haccho", consists of Yoshikazu Suzuki's photographic re-construction of Ginza in an accordion foldout format. A marvel of publishing ingenuity: Two continuous plates present Every Building On Ginza Street, one across the top, the other across the bottom, with text in the center. The accordion is encased in pale green hard boards with red titles in front. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "Ginza Kaiwai/Ginza Haccho". Ostensibly, the precursor of Ed Ruscha's "Every Building On The Sunset Strip" (1966). "Ginza Kaiwai/Ginza Haccho" is first of all, two books, both of them realized to the superior standards that one has come to expect of Japanese publishing. Second, the concept and realization of "Ginza Haccho" is the same as Ed Ruscha's most celebrated Artist Book, except that the former precedes the latter by thirteen years. Calling "Ginza Haccho" the "Japanese Every Building On The Sunset Strip", as some commentators have done, is racist-wrong, as the appellation suggests that "Ginza Haccho" followed rather than preceded Ruscha. Whether Ruscha was aware of "Ginza Haccho" or not is irrelevant. Yoshikazu Suzuki did it first, brilliantly so. Just as important, its precedence does not in any way diminish Ed Ruscha's achievement either. An absolute "must-have" title for Yoshikazu Suzuki, photography, and Artist Book collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of few copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online, is enclosed in a hand-made protective black cloth slipcase for posterity, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. It is the single most beautiful copy we have ever seen. Please note: The few copies that have turned up online all have serious flaws: Heavy foxing, staining, soiling, and wear as well as intrusive repairs. As collectors realize the importance of "Ginza Kaiwai/Ginza Haccho" in the history of modern book-making, its value will increase accordingly. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest Artist Books of our time. A fine collectible copy. .

"In the mystery genre, there's always room for a new premise, and Swain has come up with a doozy: His hero, Tony Valentine, is an ex-cop who specializes in catching casino cheats. The downside of the job is that Tony must work for casino owners, which is why he is on the lam, enjoying a romance with a lady wrestler and even participating in the odd tag-team match. But when the romance founders and Tony gets a summons from the head of security at Florida's Micanopy Indian Reservation Casino, he heads for the Everglades. The scam is several layers deep: Crooked blackjack dealers and fixed basketball games play roles, along with a couple of nasty alligators eager to test Tony's wrestling skills. The gambling details are a treat, the banter is worthy of a place at Elmore Leonard's table, and the Floridian sense of absurdity draws on Hiaasen without seeming derivative" (Bill Ott). An absolute "must-have" title for James Swain collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue pen on the title page by James Swain. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. One of the finest American mystery writers of our time. A fine copy. . ISBN 0345461754.

Presents, in an elegant collectible format, Charles Swedlund's "Circa 1955". The single most complete and illuminating overview of the photographer's body of work and achievement. "At 75 years old, Charles Swedlund, who was schooled at Chicago's fabled Institute of Design, decided to open up for public view the vast archive of black-and-white experimental photography he had kept to himself through more than fifty years of persistent shooting that ranged over countless genres, each of which he bent in new directions. He selected works 'circa 1955', dividing them into groups: Dense and intricate multiple exposures, dramatic action shots of firefighters, ice abstractions, swampscapes of Okenfenokee, cityscapes of Chicago, and urban night scenes. Swedlund shows himself to be THE quintessential photographer, dedicated to technical care and precision, harnessed to disciplined imagination, and aimed at seeing the world around us through what is revealed distinctively by the photograph" (Michael Weinstein). Swedlund's "Firefighters" sequence of real-life, unposed photographs is unsurpassed in the history of the medium: Dynamic and powerful studies in chiaroscuro that are worthy of comparison with "Old Master" artists, but with an immediacy, even urgency that is entirely their own. An absolute "must-have" title for Charles Swedlund collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page of Volume I by Charles Swedlund. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It is also very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on his Contribution by Paul Berlanga. He conducted and transcribed the important Interview with the artist that appears in Volume II. This title is a late-modern art photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the Slipcased Set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. Firefighters, Chicago 1955: Photographs By Charles Swedlund

Imprint: Berlin, Germany, Only Photography, 2015
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 61 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs, presented as an Artist Book. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 300 copies. The first and only edition. The book was distributed mainly in Europe, not sold commercially in the United States. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Roland Angst: Regular-sized volume format. Black hard boards with titles embossed on the cover, as issued. Elegant exposed spine. Photographs by Charles Swedlund. Text by Stephen Daiter. Artist Interview by Paul Berlanga. Printed in tritone on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in Berlin, Germany to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is outstanding in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in a Limited Edition format, Charles Swedlund's "Firefighters, Chicago Circa 1955". One of the most dramatic real-life, unposed photographic sequences of the 20th century. Some of the images first appeared in "Circa 55", a brilliant overview of the photographer's body of work and achievement. "Firefighters", which was Volume Two of "Circa 1955", is re-presented here in a different image-sequence (the publisher is well-known as an exemplary photography book-maker), a larger format, and with even more dazzling images, beautifully reproduced, of Swedlund's masterwork, published at last for the very first time. As such, "Firefighters" is unsurpassed in the history of the medium: Dynamic and powerful studies in chiaroscuro that are worthy of comparison with "Old Master" artists, but with an immediacy, even urgency that is entirely their own. "There are charms made only for distant admiration. Yet no spectacle is nobler than a blaze" (Samuel Johnson). Swedlund gets as close to the action as one could possibly be without becoming engulfed in flames, the lethal possibility that his firefighters confront with every conflagration, including those captured for posterity in these stunning images (that Dr. Johnson would surely have admired). "Swedlund shows himself to be THE quintessential photographer, dedicated to technical care and precision, harnessed to disciplined imagination, and aimed at seeing the world around us through what is revealed distinctively by the photograph" (Michael Weinstein). An absolute "must-have" title for Charles Swedlund collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page. It is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Charles Swedlund. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is an art photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Swedlund did NOT sign most copies of the book. The latter was distributed mainly in Europe, not sold commercially in the United States. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with tritone plates. One of the most brilliant American photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CHARLES SWEDLUND TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

The Whole Show: Photographs By Charles Swedlund

Imprint: Chicago, IL, Anna Press/Alibi Fine Art Press, 2012
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 62 pages. Exhibition Catalog. Retrospective collection of button-photographs. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. There is no ISBN. The Exhibition Catalog is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Charles Swedlund: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Charles Swedlund. Essay by Michael Weinstein. Two Nine-Inch Souvenir Art Cards laid-in. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition of the same name held at the Alibi Fine Art Gallery Chicago in 2012. Presents Charles Swedlund's "The Whole Show". Full-size reproductions of photographs he took and turned into buttons for widespread distribution and use. The images are, of course, round, like irises, and round is, after all, how we first see all images (until painting and then photographs trained our eyes to see them two-dimensionally). As such, tens of thousands of photographs were first (very creatively) circulated and popularized as pictorial buttons, as small as one inch in diameter, collected and packaged in a tin can, and sold or given away (for advertising and promotional purposes). Some buttons were, however, as big as nine inches in diameter, and were called medallions. Swedlund fell in love with the whole idea when he chanced upon them, avidly collected the buttons as historical artifacts (the button-photograph vogue eventually passed, like all popular fads do in America, and the surviving pieces could only be found, if at all, in flea markets), and finally decided to make some of them himself. The Swedlund button-photographs come in two sizes: As one-inch buttons in one can, and as nine-inch medallions. The imagery is anything but "popular", is in fact, erotic, showing his wife Elizabeth nude during and after pregnancy, their daughter Heather, and two other female nude models. Swedlund did not really intend for his buttons to be worn on one's lapel. He did 25 of them in all. After very long absence, they are back in their entirety as The Whole Show. An absolute "must-have" title for Charles Swedlund collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Charles Swedlund. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in are two pristine Nine-Inch Souvenir Art Cards, which reproduce the Medallion Version. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Exhibition Catalog available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 26 plates. One of the most brilliant American photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CHARLES SWEDLUND TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 344 pages. Massive Exhibition Monograph. One of the most important and most beautiful books on photography ever published in the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Michael Hentges: Oversize-volume format. Maroon cloth boards with gilt titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by various contributors, a Who's Who of the whole history of photography. Text by John Szarkowski, then as now, the greatest photography curator/scholar of our time. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. We do not make books like this any longer: The reproduction quality is outstanding in its warmth, tonal range, and crispness. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition of the same name held at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) New York in 1989. The show travelled on to other major venues in the United States in 1990. Presents John Szarkowski's "Photography Until Now". The author's indispensable and single most valuable contribution to photographic scholarship, more important than even his ground-breaking "Looking At Photographs" (1973). "No other book on photography describes so clearly the development of the medium, and specifically the pictorial implications of a series of inventions that have shaped the art and craft of photography and the cultural role of the photographer" (Publisher's blurb). "Szarkowski's exquisite eye is matched by prose whose grace is equal to its deep seriousness. Essential for anyone with an interest in photography or culture in larger terms" (Publishers Weekly). "I have attempted to map out a history of photographic pictures, organized according to patterns of technological change. It is my hope that this approach will allow the art of photography to be seen not as a special case, peripheral to the larger story of the medium's broad concerns and instrumental functions, but rather, simply as work that embodies the clearest, most eloquent expression of photography's historic and continuing search for a renewed and vital identity" (John Szarkowski). The book brilliantly showcases MOMA's Permanent Collection, the greatest in the world, which Szarkowski was singularly instrumental in putting together. An absolute "must-have" title for John Szarkowski and photography collectors. This title is a great photography book. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws because they have been pored over. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. 161 tritone, 126 duotone, 17 color plates. John Szarkowski's "Looking At Photographs" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographic figures of the 20th century. A fine copy. . ISBN 0870705733.

Szymborska, Wislawa (Poet); Trzeciak, Joanna (Translator) & Milosz, Czeslaw (Contributor)
Miracle Fair: Selected Poems Of Wislawa Szymborska

Imprint: New York City, NY, W. W. Norton & Company, 2001
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 159 pages. Retrospective collection of poems. One of the greatest poetry books of our time. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Wislawa Szymborska's "Miracle Fair" in a felicitous English translation. A new selection of Szymborska's poems in English: Fresh and vital translations by Joanna Trzeciak that amount to a different approach, meticulously culled from her body of work in the Polish original. Part of the reason Szymborska's work resonates with readers is that it demands to be read ALOUD: Its "metaphorical intonation" is a "vocalise" (to paraphrase the great American poet Richard Howard), and these new translations are a "counter-voice" to the elegant translations of Stanislaw Baranczak and Clare Canavagh. Among other nuances of translation, Trzeciak uses rhyme whenever she thinks it could work, as in Szymborska's love poems, where it does. The Introductory Essay by fellow Pole and fellow Nobel Laureate Czeslaw Milosz is "must" reading. "Presents the full range of Wislawa Szymborska's major themes: The ironies of love, the wonders of nature's beauty, and the illusory character of art. Szymborska's voice emerges as that of a gentle subversive, self-deprecating in its wit yet graced with a genius for coaxing the extraordinary out of the ordinary" (Peter Davison). According to Szymborska, all poets are in a perpetual dialogue with the initial as well as the lasting epiphany, "I don't know" (the original title of her Nobel Prize Speech is "I Don't Know"). "Deep currents run / as strange as the echoes of old truths in prayer / There are no questions more urgent / than the naive ones" (Wislawa Szymborska). Wislawa Szymborska died on February 1, 2012, one of the most beloved literary figures of our time. An absolute "must-have" title for Wislawa Szymborska collectors. This copy comes with a 4.0 X 5.5 inch Nobel Prize Souvenir Card that bears Wislawa Szymborska's pre-printed/facsimile signature in black ink-pen on recto. This title is a late-modern classic. As far as we know, this is the only copy (with Nobel Prize Souvenir) of the First American Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare set thus. Joanna Trzeciak won The Heldt Prize for Translation for "Miracle Fair" in 2001. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1996. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine set. Tahimik, Kidlat (A.K.A. Eric C. DeGuia)
Turumba: A Film By Kidlat Tahimik

Imprint: El Cerrito, CA, Flower Films, 2005
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. The filmmaker's second film classic. One of the most important films of the 20th century. Manufactured in NTSC in a small and limited press run. Original DVD plastic case with front and back pictorial covers and titles on the cover, back, and spine, as issued. Both the case and the disc are in pristine condition. Manufactured in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Kidlat Tahimik's "Turumba". His sequel-of-sorts to "Perfumed Nightmare". His real name is Eric C. DeGuia; his Filipino pseudonym literally means "Lightning Silence". "The ironies of capitalism on the margins make easy targets for Kidlat Tahimik's wit. But his sharp eye never makes him seem bitter. Demonstrates great affection for his subjects, without stooping to romanticism" (The Village Voice). Made before the advent of the Digital Revolution, the message of all his films is even more urgent and relevant today. Formally rigorous and ingenious, they anticipate the work of the great Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Kidlat Tahimik's aesthetic is probably best described as affectionate ambivalence. He is not a Luddite who rejects high-tech. After all, his chosen art is film, itself a technological invention that depends on constant innovation and breakthroughs, and his cult following is the cosmopolitan, international film audience (his films have never been released commercially in the Philippines). He is instead a visual poet, whose goal is self-expression ("roots") and self-transcendence ("progress"). An absolute "must-have" title for Kidlat Tahimik collectors. This title is a great film. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. Winner of the International Film Critics Award of the Berlin Film Festival and the American Film Festival Blue Ribbon in 1978 for "Perfumed Nightmare". First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 420 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most sensational literary debuts of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Gabriel Tallent's "My Absolute Darling". His masterly first novel: "The breakout debut of the year" (The New York Times). "The word 'masterpiece' has been cheapened by too many blurbs. But 'My Absolute Darling' absolutely is one" (Stephen King). "A major American debut that incorporates psychological realism of the highest order juxtaposed with nature writing that at times is so lyrical you might as well be reading poetry" (The Houston Chronicle). "The year's must-read novel. Tallent in this debut makes an old story - the drama of coming of age - feel original and full of youthful power" (The Times of London). The flood of mostly positive, indeed rave reviews must have come as an immense and gratifying relief for the author, who spent, by his own account, almost ten years writing, re-writing, and re-writing again his gripping novel. Violently murdered days before takeoff, she is reduced to watching her friends bumble through their travels from the remove of the spirit world" (Publisher's blurb). "Tan, marvelously liberated, attains new heights with her piquant humor and ship-of-fools cast of charmingly cranky characters. The Hundred Secret Senses

Imprint: New York City, NY, G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1995
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 358 pages. The author's third novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Amy Tan's "The Hundred Secret Senses". In many ways, her most beguiling and seductive work. Within a very short period of time, Amy Tan has become a living symbol of literary success and identity: Possibly the most visible (and most active) Asian-American writer/icon, she is justly celebrated for the abundance of her talent, a writer of effortlessly and lyrically limpid prose whose abiding subject is the "push" of identity and exile and the "pull" of tradition and family, from a singularly and sentimentally (in the best sense of the word) Chinese-American perspective. Her narratives of the Asian-American immigrant experience are written without bitterness, despite the pain they recount, but with humor, charm, and genuine feeling. They are unmistakably stories that come from experience, retold imaginatively. An absolute "must-have" title for Amy Tan collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in black pen on the title page by the author: "To Sandra, Joy! Amy Tan". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient is named. The greeting, which is an allusion to her most famous novel, "The Joy Luck Club", has been adopted by the author for many of her inscriptions. This title is a contemporary classic. Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 415 pages. The author's second novel. One of the most important literary events of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. This is more desirable than the kitschy Franklin Mint Edition. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Amy Tan's "The Kitchen God's Wife". Featuring a dazzlingly beautiful design by Gretchen Shields (who did the wonderful illustrations for Amy Tan's "The Moon Lady", her children's-book adaptation of "The Joy Luck Club"). "Beautifully written, heart-rending, sometimes violent, with strong characterization, it will captivate one's interest to the very last page. This is more than a story about family relationships at a crossroads: It captures the essence of Chinese heritage and culture" (Midwest Book Review). The Cinema Of Paolo And Vittorio Taviani: Nature, Culture, And History Revealed By Two Tuscan Masters

Imprint: Rome, Italy, GREMESE Editore, 2001
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 160 pages. Book-length appreciation and appraisal of subjects. Now considered a contemporary film classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. The GREMESE Editore Edition was published simultaneously in Italian-, French-, and English-Language Editions. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents "The Cinema of Paolo And Vittorio Taviani: Nature, Culture, And history Revealed by Two Tuscan Masters". A portrait of Italian film craftsmen as geniuses. The single most thorough study and loving homage to the cinema of Vittorio and Paolo Taviani, the brothers who have worked together as co-filmmakers on some of the greatest films ever made of the 20th century. They have produced at least two full-fledged masterpieces, "Padre Padrone" ("My Father, My Master") and "La Notte di San Lorenzo" (known in the English-speaking world as "The Night of the Shooting Stars"), which have not only endured but prevailed in the sense that the Taviani Brothers' deliberate, rigorous, and austere post-Neo-Realism style (so "un-Italian", as some critics have noted, for their restraint and understated drama) remains the central style of all great European film-making instead of Fellini's more flamboyant, but genuinely great, film style. "Here is the complete oeuvre of two bashful, talented artisans, recognized as pioneers of a uniquely intense cinema. A selection of high-quality essays, brought together and complemented by some of the most beautiful images" (Publisher's blurb). Taylor, Benjamin
Tales Out Of School

Imprint: New York City, NY, Turtle Point Press, 1995
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 283 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most important literary debuts of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only by a small, independent press. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Benjamin Taylor's "Tales Out of School". An ambitious historical drama and a coming-of-age narrative at the same time, an epic (succinctly told in a mere 283 pages) compared to Andre Aciman's lyric, "Call Me By Your Name" (2007). "Affectingly introduces members of a genteel, wealthy German-Jewish family living in early 20th-century Galveston, Texas. Felix, scholarly and loyal, works his way through 'The Aeneid' and adolescent stirrings of desire, which he acts upon with Wick Frawley, once a bully, now a friend. Taylor's spare, supple prose easily accommodates effective forays into Magical Realism as well as nuanced evocations of the desire, religious doubt, and affection that animate his memorable characters. It is a measure of his skill that even those met briefly in this bewitching novel continue to resonate in the reader's imagination" (Publishers Weekly). Benjamin Taylor is well-known as a scholar, literary critic, editor, and essayist, which multi-faceted achievement may have (negatively) affected his reception as a novelist. As a "nonfiction" writer so-called, he is a major figure: "Into The Open: Reflections On Genius And Modernity" (1995) and "Proust: The Search" (2015), among others, are regarded as masterpieces. But as a serious novelist, he is unjustly underrated, a so-called "writer's writer" with an esoteric following, admired by Philip Roth. An absolute "must-have" title for Benjamin Taylor collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the half-title page by Benjamin Taylor. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Souvenir Material of the event during which his signature was obtained. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. The Book Of Getting Even

Imprint: Hanover, New Hampshire, Steerforth Press, 2008
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 166 pages. The author's second novel. One of Benjamin Taylor's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only by a small, independent press. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Benjamin Taylor's "The Book of Getting Even". A tour-de-force, pulled off in a mere 166 pages. "Among the most original novels I have read in recent years" (Philip Roth). "Gabriel Geismar grows up in mid-20th-century New Orleans as the only son of a rabbi, maturing into a brilliant mathematician who is gay. Gabriel meets the twins Daniel and Marghie Hundert, the children of the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Gregor Hundert, one of the so-called 'Hungarian Eight', who immigrated to America and worked with Robert Oppenheimer on the bomb. Fascinated by the stately, Old World professor and his kindly wife, Lilo, and deeply attached to Marghie, a cinema-obsessed vegetarian, and Daniel, an angry counterculture figure" (Publishers Weekly). Taylor-Wood, Sam (Artist/Photographer); Taylor-Johnson, Sam & Visser, Hripsime (Contributor)
The Passion Cycle

Imprint: Vienna, Austria, BAWAG Foundation, 2003
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. Unpaginated. Exhibition Catalog, presented as an Artist Book. One of the most beautiful erotic art photography books of our time. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Catalog is now rare. A brilliant production by Sam Taylor-Wood and FUEL: Oversize-volume format. Red cloth boards with black titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Sam Taylor-Wood. Afterword by Hripsime Visser. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in Vienna, Austria to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the BAWAG Foundation Vienna from September 19 through November 30, 2003. Presents Sam Taylor-Wood's "The Passion Cycle". A feverish sequence of a couple having sex. The images are presented as postcard-size "souvenirs". Arranged in a non-linear, anti-narrative order, Sam Taylor-Wood makes us view the images randomly rather than sequentially, in keeping with the "collecting" aspect of the project. Now, the one thing about sex, whether routine or extreme, is that it always happens in a narrative-like, beginning/middle/end sequence: Pre-coitus, coitus, post-coitus. And while every photographic image is discrete, photography books make some kind of narrative possible, that is, a sequence that yields a storyline (as in the work of Robert Frank or Nan Goldin). Artist/photographer/film-maker Sam Taylor-Wood's approach in "The Passion Cycle" is about photography's fundamentally opposite possibility: The photograph as a sensory experience, as a performance, and as a cycle that comes full circle (rather than a linear story that has a beginning, middle, and end). After all, people still look at photographs randomly, going from this image and that. "Inspired by shunga, which depicts sexuality in a frank and unvarnished manner, the small format of the images refers to the voyeuristic relation that the collector has with shunga prints, comparable to that of the late 19th-century European collector of erotic photographs" (Hripsime Visser). The point of collecting is the same as looking at photographs: One does it in no particular order. Sam Taylor-Wood (she has remarried and now goes by Sam Taylor-Johnson) has explored her fascination with sex further, this time for a huge global audience: She directed the film adaptation of "Fifty Shades of Grey" (2015), for which she hand-picked Jamie Dornan, an impeccable choice, in his breakthrough role as the eponymous hero. An absolute "must-have" title for Sam Taylor-Wood collectors. This title is an erotic photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Exhibition Catalog/Artist Book available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. 25 color plates. One of the most brilliant artist/photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER SAM TAYLOR-WOOD TITLE IN OUR CATALOG).

Te Kanawa, Kiri (Subject/Author) & Wilson, Conrad (Co-Author)
Opera For Lovers

Imprint: Singapore, Roeder Publications Limited, 1996
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 288 pages. Rare Kiri Te Kanawa collectible set. A fine copy of "Opera For Lovers" with two Souvenir Materials, all signed by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. The diva's book-length account on subject. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the Softcover Edition. Published in a regular first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Roeder: Oversize-volume format. Gray cloth boards with gilt titles embossed on spine, as issued. Text by Kiri Te Kanawa and Conrad Wilson. Photographs by various contributors. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Singapore to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Kiri Te Kanawa's "Opera For Lovers". The uniquely personal point-of-view of the beloved diva on opera. "She has produced a book of thoughts, recollections, and observations on some well-beloved operas along with thoughts, recollections, and observations on colleagues, singers, conductors, and directors. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa talks of what opera means, revealing her favorite composers and showing the various ways in which conductors and singers interpret a work" (Publisher's blurb). For much of her forty-plus-year career, that is from 1971 onwards, Kiri Te Kanawa was regarded - and reigned - as the world's greatest diva. No one could touch her Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, and Richard Strauss. She also expanded the song-recital repertoire, encompassing operetta, such figures as Liszt, Rachmaninov, and Ravel, the flamboyant and technically demanding Spanish Romantic composers, the American Songbook (including Bernstein's "West Side Story" in its entirety), Broadway musicals, and the songs of popular culture. She embraced them all, breathing new life into everything she sang. One of the defining aspects of Kiri's career is that her critics dislike her for exactly the same reason her admirers love her: Her ravishingly beautiful voice. To her detractors, it's all she is. To her fans, it's all that matters. An absolute "must-have" title for Kiri Te Kanawa collectors. This copy of "Opera For Lovers" is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the front free endpaper by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with two Souvenir Materials: Her 1998 "Celebrity Recital" at Bridgeport Hall Manchester and her 2010 Ravinia Festival Recital, both very prominently and beautifully signed, in gold pen-marker and black pen-marker respectively, by Dame Kiri. This title is a classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy (with signed Souvenir Materials) of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed set thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates of her landmark performances. One of the greatest divas of our time. A fine collectible set. . ISBN 9810078331.

Teller, Juergen
Zwei Schauferle Mit Klob Und Eine Kinderportion Schnitzel Mit Pommes Frites ("two Schauferle With Glue And A Child's Portion Of Schnitzel With French Fries")

Imprint: Gottingen, Germany, Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag, 2003
Edition: First Edition
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 76 pages. Collection of photographs. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Juergen Teller and FUEL: Oversize-volume format. White cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted in front and titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Juergen Teller. There is no text. Printed on glossy stock paper in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. In pristine-white DJ with black titles printed on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Jurgen Teller's impossibly long-titled collection. One of his most interesting collections. "The Teller family business produces small parts for string instruments. Juergen Teller has taken photographs of company employees, his uncle, and his uncle's collection of hunting trophies. He has also shot pictures in dripstone caves, of Kate Moss during her pregnancy, and of himself. In the world of Juergen Teller, it somehow all fits together. 'Werkstatt', a studio or creative environment, collects, as Juergen Teller does, people and places. It combines scenes from the world he grew up in with selections from the world of beautiful images that he travels in today. Candid, subjective, and completely without superficial effect, Teller offers a peek or two into his world" (Publisher's blurb). It is unlikely then that he asked his uncle's permission to take his self-portraits, which are all full-frontal nudes. Teller's apparent self-image as a sex symbol (a sly dig at Mapplethorpe) is touching, if that's the right word, because he is not, as sex symbols go, a prize trophy. An absolute "must-have" title for Juergen Teller collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. 36 color, 11 duotone plates. Juergen Teller's "Tracht" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JUERGEN TELLER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3882438991.
