Crain, Caleb
Necessary Errors: A Novel
Imprint: New York City, NY, Penguin Books, 2013
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 472 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most important literary debuts of our time. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. Presents Caleb Crain's "Necessary Errors". His much-awaited first novel. An established critic and cultural journalist, Crain worked on and nurtured his novel for over a decade, a rare phenomenon and a very long time in contemporary publishing. "Shimmering and expansive, Crain's prose richly captures the turbulent feelings and discoveries of youth as it stretches toward adulthood: The chance encounters that grow into lasting, unforgettable experiences, and the surprises of our first ventures into a foreign world" (Publisher's blurb). The novel earned rare praise from the exacting New Yorker Magazine critic: "A very good novel, an enviably good one, and to read it is to relive all the anxieties and illusions and grand projects of one's own youth" (James Wood). Surely, the title itself, "Necessary Errors", beautifully sums up the error-filled passage called youth, and by extension, every life itself. An absolute "must-have" title for Caleb Crain collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, dated (shortly after publication), and placed in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "Caleb Crain 22 Sept 2013 NYC". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Souvenir Material of the Brooklyn Book Festival 2013, during which event his signature was obtained. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and post-publication dated copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant American writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CALEB CRAIN TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 014312241X.

Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 373 pages. The author's tenth novel. One of Robert Crais' finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Robert Crais' "Hostage". As in hostage-taking. "In a sleepy suburb north of Los Angeles, a convenience-store robbery turns violent. With the police on their tail, three criminals flee the scene and invade a home in an exclusive gated community, taking captive a panicked father and his two children. Police chief Jeff Talley, a former hostage negotiator with the LAPD's SWAT Unit, is now thrown back into the high-pressure world that he has so desperately tried to leave behind. But Talley's nightmare has barely begun" (Publisher's blurb). The basis of the riveting film adaptation by Florent Emilio-Siri, with Bruce Willis and Ben Foster. Robert Crais wrote the screenplay himself. That should be a piece of cake: His previous career as the screenwriter for the long-running television series, "Hill Street Blues" and "L. A. Law", has served Robert Crais well in his second career as a serious mystery/thriller writer. An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Crais collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Robert Crais. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the Chicago Cultural Center in 2004. Presents Barbara Crane's "Still Lifes: Natures Mortes". A powerful contemplation of (human) mortality through the rich metaphorical imagery of Nature. Barbara Crane had been collecting, and then photographing in her rigorous ID style, found objects from the natural landscape: Dead animals and hollowed-out skulls from Michigan, where she owned a cabin in the woods. "Isolated from the distractions of their environment, these dead creatures become magnified essays on the formal aspects of change, confronting the viewer in the specificity of their detail. The tonal contrasts of the images enhance the slightest nuances: The fuzzy feathers and fur, the wrinkled skin, the juxtaposition of soft tissue against hard bone structure, the accumulation of regurgitated strands of hair, the convulsively intertwined wood" (Sofia Zutautas). Indefatigable until the end, Barbara Crane died on August 7, 2019 at the age of 91. An absolute "must-have" title for Barbara Crane collectors. This title is now collectible. Private Views: Polaroids By Barbara Crane

Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. Unpaginated. Exhibition Catalog. Retrospective collection of Polaroid photographs. One of Barbara Crane's finest achievements. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Francesca Richer: Regular-sized volume format. Ribbed brown cloth boards with Polaroid reproduction pasted on the recessed center and gilt titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Barbara Crane. Text by Barbara Hitchcock. Printed on thick, glossy stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition held at the Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago in November and December, 2009. Presents "Private Views: Polaroids by Barbara Crane". All taken in Chicago between 1980 and 1984, at various annual summer festivals that continue to be celebrated to this day. Since each photograph is one-of-a-kind, the whole lot can only be viewed through this volume, where they are reproduced at actual size. Barbara Crane has stated that her lifelong goal as a photographer has been to "attempt to eradicate previous habits of seeing and thinking, to keep searching for what is visually new while always hoping that a fusion of form and content will take place" (Barbara Crane). Her Polaroids "offer an intense, sun-drenched, sweat-glistening example of one such fusion, in which the social document is combined with extreme close-ups, tight cropping, and mixed lighting for maximum impact. Her technique also serves to bring out the sheen of flesh photographed at close quarters under a hot summer sun. The effect is mesmerizing, creating a palpable sensuality from image to image, an incredible document not of a particular event or personality but of something more intangible: The public expression of euphoria" (Barbara Hitchcock). Crane is identified with the Institute of Design and its Bauhaus aesthetics. In these Polaroids, Barbara Crane deploys the same rigor, simplicity, and functionality to create a genuinely sensual, even erotic, experience, the fulfillment in its own distinctive way of her visionary aims. Indefatigable until the end, Barbara Crane died on August 7, 2019 at the age of 91. An absolute "must-have" title for Barbara Crane collectors. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the Museum of Contemporary Photography Columbia College Chicago from March 21 through June 15, 2002. Presents Barbara Crane's "Urban Anomalies: Chicago". Her beloved home-city, as seen from a different Conceptual perspective. The Institute of Design-trained Crane published late in her long career not one but two brilliant books on Chicago (the other being "Chicago Loop", 2001) that are both influenced by the Bauhaus' emphasis on formal experimentation, on the intersection between and melding of structures (rather than their integral separateness) : "These composed images stress the tension between the lines of architecture and her frame. Roofs and fragments of facades float in a context-less space, conveying the fluid and disorienting character of urban landscapes" (The Chicago Reader). That is surely because Crane has stated that her lifelong goal as a photographer has been to "attempt to eradicate previous habits of seeing and thinking, to keep searching for what is visually new while always hoping that a fusion of form and content will take place", and that "once I developed my first roll of film in 1948, nothing else mattered" (Barbara Crane). Indefatigable until the end, Barbara Crane died on August 7, 2019 at the age of 91. An absolute "must-have" title for Barbara Crane collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Hardcover Edition. It is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in red pen-marker on the title page by the photographer: "Barbara Crane 2002". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Her signature beautifully matches the color red that appears in many of the photographs, the cloth boards, and the letter "O" in "Anomalies" on the title page. This title is an art photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Deluxe Edition available and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Should NOT be confused with the Limited Edition of 1500 copies, which is a softcover original only. The Deluxe Edition was not sold commercially. A rare signed copy thus. 18 color plates. One of the finest American photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER BARBARA CRANE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1930066058.

Crane, Elizabeth
When The Messenger Is Hot
Imprint: New York City, NY, Little, Brown & Company, 2003
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 210 pages. Retrospective collection of short stories. One of Elizabeth Crane's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Elizabeth Crane's "When The Messenger Is Hot". In many ways, her best book. "Crane works on an intuitive plane as her funny, funky, wounded, but still swinging women protagonists struggle to survive in a cacophonous and aggressive world. Having kicked the alcohol habit, they have turned to caffeine with a vengeance, making for marvelously keyed-up and jittery narratives. Crane off-handedly toys with assumptions about reality as her characters change shape, indulge in elaborate fantasies, and even, slowly disappear. One narrator is certain that her mother has come back from the dead, another riffs hilariously on the complications of having a much younger lover, and yet another documents her experiences dating various men named Dave. Clever, inventive, and piquant, Crane's breathless stories hit the brain with more voltage than a double espresso" (Donna Seaman). An absolute "must-have" title for Elizabeth Crane collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Elizabeth Crane. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. With Dust Jacket
First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 168 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. An austerely elegant production by Bruce Cratsley and James Crump: Oversize-volume format. Purple cloth boards with silver titles on spine, as issued. Photographs by Bruce Cratsley. Texts by Barbara Head Millstein, Julia Van Haaften, Sherry Suris, and Elsa Dorfman. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ, which features one of the photographer's most celebrated images, and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Bruce Cratsley's "White Light Silent Shadows". His highly personal and poetic work. As the title suggests, Cratsley's oeuvre is about the mysteries of light and shadow, whether the subjects be still lifes, cityscapes, urban street scenes, male nudes, or intimate portraits of friends and lovers. Encompasses the period between 1972 and 1997, when the life-defining event in the photographer's life was that he contracted AIDS, and somehow survived, unlike his close friend Peter Hujar, who died in 1987. Hujar was the first to see Cratsley's talent and persuaded him to study with Lisette Model at the New School For Social Research. Influenced by Eugene Atget and Andre Kertesz and inspired by the work of Model, who became his mentor, the work took on a more urgent and at the same time more poignant tone in its final phase, as Cratsley, still struggling with AIDS, persevered to communicate life's ultimate potential and fragility, its vibrancy and mortality. "Love and work become antidotes to illness, worry, and pain" (Bruce Cratsley). Bruce Cratsley died of AIDS in 1998, at the age of 53, and shortly after this book was finished and published. An absolute "must-have" title for Bruce Cratsley collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Cray, Fred (Artist/Photographer); Grundberg, Andy & Cooley, Martha (Contributors)
Fred Cray: Self-portraits: The Tremaine Gallery Exhibition Catalog
Imprint: Lakeville, Connecticut, Tremaine Gallery of Hotchkiss School, 1999
Edition: First Edition
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 12 pages. Exhibition Catalog. The first and only edition. Published in a tiny print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Catalog is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Fred Cray: Regular-sized volume format. Pristine-white softcovers with black titles in front, as issued. Photographs by Fred Cray. Essays by Andy Grundberg and Martha Cooley. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition held at the Tremaine Gallery of Hotchkiss School, where Fred Cray studied and graduated from in 1975. Presents a selection of Fred Cray's self-portraits and collage photographs. They hark back to the Pictorialist tradition of photography, which emphasized expressiveness and aspired to the level of painting, rejecting the sharpness, clarity, and reproducibility of the photograph. In Cray's singular case, "self-portrait" means NOT being recognized in any of the portraits. In one of his most beautiful images, his back is actually turned from the camera. In another, his extreme closeup is a study in the color red of the most abstracted, Minimalist kind. As Andy Grundberg points out, these painting-photographs will be recognized as powerful and eloquent responses to the "objective" art of such figures as Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman. The only works that approach Cray's self-portraits in ambition and achievement are Adam Fuss' and Christopher Bucklow's, both also influenced by the Pictorialist tradition. An esoteric, somewhat eccentric figure, he keeps American Surrealism and the very idea of art alive in our time, which desperately needs it. Fred Cray has not received the kind of recognition that he deserves because his art is quirkily personal. But he is The Real Thing: Thoughtful yet intuitive, and deeply moving. As such, he is an anomaly in the midst of industrial-scale, manufactured art. His time will come because it is on his side. An absolute "must-have" title for Fred Cray collectors. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Exhibition Catalog available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. 9 full-page color and collage plates. One of the most brilliant American artists of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER FRED CRAY TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Fred Cray: Changing The Guard
Imprint: New York City, NY, Fred Cray Studios, 2014
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. Unpaginated. Artist Book. Collection of unique self-portraits. One of the most beautiful Artist Books of our time. Limited Edition of 200 numbered and signed copies. The first and only edition. An austerely elegant production by Fred Cray: Oversize-volume format. Gray cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted in front and metallic-silver titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Photographically-based art by Fred Cray. There is no text. Two loose 4 X 6 unique postcards laid-in. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in a Limited Edition format, Fred Cray's "Changing The Guard". His most rigorous "Unique Photographs" project. The sly title refers to the fact that each of the images shows exactly the same self-portrait, which has been superimposed with another photographically-sourced image, rendering the self-portrait insignificant albeit ever-present, and resulting in a unique image because the artist has made only one of each. Cray calls each resulting image a "double-printed photograph", of which there will potentially be an infinite number "left out in the world as unique photographs". It's an ingenious idea (that uses a rudimentary process called superimposition) because it turns the photograph, the most easily reproducible medium, into something unique, literally one-of-a-kind. At the same time, Cray reminds us of the artwork's reproducibility by using the same self-portrait (when he could have used various other portraits, as most people would have done) and making each piece exactly the same 4 X 6 inch postcard size (when he could have produced different sizes, as again, most people would have done). It is, of course, precisely Cray's rigor to the point of static repetition that makes him an artist. You could say that while Cray is basically agreeing with Walter Benjamin's insight about "the work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction", he is also dis-agreeing with it, by showing that despite its reproducible character, the photograph does not diminish or undermine an artist's ability to create a unique work of art that reflects his personal vision. Cray reminds us, pace Benjamin, that the most serious and ambitious contemporary art is increasingly more, not less, photographically-based. As Andy Grundberg has pointed out, these "painting-photographs" will be recognized as powerful and eloquent responses to the "objective" art of such figures as Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman. An esoteric, somewhat eccentric figure, Cray keeps American Surrealism and the very idea of art alive in our time, which desperately needs it. This copy is one of the Limited Edition of 200 numbered and signed copies, indicated/numbered as such on the Back Limitation Page. It is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Fred Cray. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid in are two loose 4 X 6 inch unique postcard artworks. This is a beautiful Artist Book collectible. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates, 2 unique photographs. One of the most brilliant American artists of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER FRED CRAY TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). Presents Fred Cray's "Untitled Original Artwork". One of a Series of unique pieces that he makes once a year, the work of art as thoughtful gesture. The art is Surrealist-inspired, with a touch of Symbolism, and consists of three juxtaposed "found" items that are pasted on hand-cut paper board: Two New York Lottery tickets (which symbolize the ultimate good luck-wish for the New Year) on both sides with a self-portrait in the middle (which symbolizes the ultimate mystery and beauty of art and life itself). His dedication is hand-written at the back. In this truly wonderful Series, Cray uses the juxtaposition of photographs, the most easily reproducible medium, to make something unique, literally one-of-a-kind. Despite its reproducible character, the photograph does not diminish or undermine Cray's ability to create a unique work of art that reflects his personal vision. He reminds us that the most serious and ambitious contemporary art is increasingly more, not less, photographically-based. An esoteric, somewhat eccentric figure, Cray keeps American Surrealism and the very idea of art alive in our time, which desperately needs it. An absolute "must-have" artwork for Fred Cray collectors. This 15 X 10 inch original artwork is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in black ink-pen on verso by the artist: "Happy holidays. Hope spirits are good and business not too bad. I did get my first two books out this year and have a show opening at Janet's in January. Otherwise healthy and happy. Love, Fred Cray". The recipient is named, an important figure in the art photography world. This comes with a pristine copy of the Invitation Card for Fred Cray's "Unique Photographs" at Janet Borden New York City in 2014. This is the only such artwork available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed piece thus. 1 original artwork. One of the most brilliant American artists of our time. A collectible piece. (SEE ALSO OTHER FRED CRAY TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Fred Cray: Silhouettes
Imprint: Brooklyn, NY, 64 Books, 2016
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 58 pages. Artist Book. Collection of unique silhouettes. One of the most beautiful Artist Books of our time. Limited Edition of 120 numbered copies. The first and only edition. An austerely elegant production by Fred Cray: Regular-sized volume format. White pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover, as issued. Photographically-based art by Fred Cray. There is no text. Two loose 4 X 6 unique postcards laid-in. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in a Limited Edition format, Fred Cray's "Silhouettes". In many ways, his most exquisite "Unique Photographs" project thus far. Each of the images shows a silhouette that has been superimposed with another photographically-sourced image, rendering the silhouette insignificant albeit ever-present, and resulting in a unique image because the artist has made only one of each. At the same time, Cray reminds us of the artwork's reproducibility by making each piece exactly the same 4 X 6 inch postcard size (when he could have produced different sizes, as most people would have done). This copy is one of the Limited Edition of 120 numbered copies, indicated/numbered as such on the Back Limitation Page. It is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Fred Cray. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid in are four loose 4 X 6 inch unique postcard artworks. This is an Artist Book collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy (with four unique photographs) of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Cray did NOT sign most copies of the Limited Edition. He also limited himself to just one (1) unique photograph for most copies. This copy is signed and comes with four unique photographs. A rare signed copy thus. 37 color plates, 2 unique photographs. One of the most brilliant American artists of our time. A fine copy. After-images
Imprint: New York City, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 1977
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,
With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 466 pages. The author's breakthrough debut collection of dance essays. One of the greatest books on dance of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. Portions of the book were subsequently reissued in an Omnibus Edition called "Writing In The Dark, Dancing In The New Yorker" (2000). The First Edition is now rare. Presents Arlene Croce's "After-Images". Her masterly inaugural collection from her first decade, 1966-1977. Illuminates, demands, and rewards repeated readings. Croce's dance essays (avidly followed by aficionados in The New Yorker Magazine) captured the essence of the most elusive of the performing arts. She analyzed and described individual dancers, choreographers, dance companies, performances, and trends with insights and turns of phrase as thrilling as brilliantly executed pas-de-deux. Always thoughtful and provocative, Croce exulted in the sublime and excoriated the meretricious. Kenneth Tynan once said that "a good critic is one who perceives what is happening in the art of his [or, as the case may be, her] time. A great critic also perceives what is not happening". If so, then Croce is the one dance critic who captured for posterity the glories (and inevitable shortcomings) of dance in our time, surpassing her most eminent predecessor, Edwin Denby: "Croce is the Jane Austen of dance criticism. In breadth as well as in intensity, the best dance critic" (Richard Poirier). "Theoretically, I am ready to go to anything once. If it moves, I'm interested. If it moves to music, I'm in love" (Arlene Croce). An absolute "must-have" title for Arlene Croce collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, dated, and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "For Leo Lerman, In gratitude, respect, and love. Arlene Croce June 1, 1979". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. The preeminent writer, culture critic, Vanity Fair Magazine editor, and major figure of New York's cultural life from the 1940's until his death in 1994, Leo Lerman was New York Living Legend personified. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, dated, and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and despite its imperfection (slight wear on DJ spine and back, but it's there) is still in fine condition: Every single internal page is clean, crisp, and bright. The cloth boards are sharp, with NO bumping at all. Please note: This is an association copy. As far as we know, Arlene Croce did NOT do a single public signing throughout her high-profile and highly influential career. Copies available online are subsequent printings or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. The greatest dance critic of the 20th century. A fine copy. Crumley, James
The Mexican Tree Duck: A C.w. Sughrue Novel: The Uncorrected Proof
Imprint: New York City, NY, The Mysterious Press, 1993
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 247 pages. The author's second "C. W. Sughrue" novel. Uncorrected Proof. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a tiny print run as a softcover original only for the exclusive use of the publisher and author. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Text by James Crumley. Without DJ, as issued. Presents James Crumley's "The Mexican Tree Duck". Wearily unputdownable. "While the often furious action of Crumley's mystery takes place in the West, from Montana to the Tex-Mex border, the novel's heart beats in wartime Vietnam. There private eye C. W. Sughrue and most of Crumley's memorable cast spent their formative years, learning about arms, reconnaissance and dope, and forging the relationships that hold them together or tear them apart as effectively as an AK-47. As the bodies fall in increasing numbers, Sughrue falls, too, into bed with various women and in love with one or two. He enlists the help of other vets, including an ex-intelligence officer who is now a lawyer famous for defending drug lords. Sustained by booze and cocaine, driven by loyalty and revenge, Sughrue and his company gradually unravel the threads of sex, drugs, oil interests, and politics that lead to a final para-military campaign with a high body count" (Publishers Weekly). An absolute "must-have" title for James Crumley collectors. This copy of the Uncorrected Proof is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by James Crumley. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 145 pages. Retrospective collection of black-and-white photographs, accompanied by a journal. One of the most valuable photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. An austerely elegant production by Valdir Cruz and Daniel Power: Oversize-volume format. Red cloth boards with black titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and journals by Valdir Cruz. Essays by Kenneth Good, Vicki Goldberg, the Photography Critic of The New York Times, and Trudie Styler. Together with her rock star-husband Sting, Styler is the founder of the Rainforest Foundation. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in eevry respect. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Valdir Cruz's "Faces of The Rainforest". One of the few ground-breaking collections on its subject ever published. "A prophetic portrait of a people on the brink of extinction. The Yanomami, native to Venezuela and Brazil, are descendants of those who migrated over the Bering Strait some twenty centuries ago, and have been residents of the Amazon for the past 15000 years. Though they are one of the last remaining societies untouched by modernization, interference from outsiders has incontestably altered the fragile future of the Yanomami, as documented in 'Darkness In El Dorado' by Patrick Tierney. Like Edward S. Curtis' photographs before him, Cruz's haunting images are made all the more hallucinatory by the knowledge that this ancient culture is about to disappear off the face of the earth" (Trudie Styler). Valdir Cruz is the recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, spent eight months among the Yanomami Indians, and contributed his photographs to "Darkness In El Dorado". His work is in the Permanent Collections of The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and the Brooklyn Museum, among many others, and has been exhibited to critical acclaim throughout the world. He is doing what a philanthropist/conservationist once described as "God's work" even as he has committed himself to photography's oldest and most sacred vocation: Photographing people, places, and things before they finally, completely disappear. An absolute "must-have" title for Valdir Cruz collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, placed, dated, and inscribed in black ink-pen on the page opposite the title page by the photographer: "Por Martha, In the hope that this may help ignite that necessary sparkle, and that we may work together in a very near future! Abracos, Valdir Cruz NYC 02/03". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient, Martha Schneider, who is named, is an important figure in the art and photography world. This title is a contemporary photography classic. First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 240 pages. Rare Michael Cunningham collectible set. A fine copy of the Advance Reader's Edition of "By Nightfall" with a fine copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing, both signed by Michael Cunningham. Both precede and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a tiny print run for the exclusive use of the publisher and author (in the case of the ARC) and in a small and limited first print run (in the case of the First Hardcover Edition). They are now scarce. Presents Michael Cunningham's "By Nightfall". His sixth novel. "Mid-life crisis" is a familiar and fascinating subject. For New Yorkers, it is a fact of life. If New York City is anything in particular, it is a city which cannot seem to get over its protracted mid-life crisis (which is why Jonathan Lethem entitled his New York novel "Chronic City") and indeed seems perversely to thrive because of it. The city mirrors its residents who, after all, make New York what it is. In long-time New Yorkers Rebecca and Peter Harris, Michael Cunningham has given us two of his most memorable characters. Rebecca's younger brother, Ethan, the pivotal third character, is the resentful outsider/trouble-maker who personifies The Rest of America vis-a-vis NYC. Never heavy-handed, Cunningham turns the larger drama of New York mid-life crisis into a nuanced and finely calibrated series of revelations that reach a heart-stopping climactic set piece. Then it ends on a tentative note, an ending that suggests (but does not promise) a new beginning. "Cunningham is drawn to simple, potent plots, saving his energy for the hearts and minds, the groins and guts, of his characters. He makes you turn the pages. You aren't deadened by detail; you're eager to know what happens next. Cunningham writes so well, and with such an economy of language that he can pull up the poet's exact match" (Jeanette Winterson). An absolute "must-have" title for Michael Cunningham collectors. This copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Michael Cunningham. It comes with a fine copy of the Advance Reader's Edition, which is also very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by the author. They are both signed directly on the title page, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed set thus. Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 466 pages. Rare Michael Cunningham collectible set. A fine copy of the Advance Reader's Edition of "Flesh And Blood" with a fine copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing, both signed by Michael Cunningham. Both precede and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a tiny print run for the exclusive use of the publisher and author (in the case of the ARC) and in a small and limited first print run (in the case of the First Hardcover Edition). They are now scarce. Presents Michael Cunningham's "Flesh And Blood". A historical saga, a grand "family" drama that represents a departure from the author's early and acute personal dramas. "Family defines us, one way or another. In Cunningham's empathetic and searing family drama, the haphazardness of genetics and fate plays in mocking counterpart to the predictability of heartache. Cunningham is a tenacious and word-perfect writer, with acute insight into the eccentricity of personalities and the chemistry of intimate relationships. He stretches this sorrowful saga across an entire century, beginning in 1935 in Greece, where a boy suffers poverty and neglect. Constantine eventually immigrates to the US, where he amasses a fortune and his life becomes a living hell" (Booklist). Cunningham is an ambitious and restless writer in the most positive sense: He is a novelist whose commitment to lapidary prose (that is, exquisite writing with a faultless ear for the Zeitgeist) sets him apart from other "experimental" writers (whose prose is often clumsy and careless). He is, at the same time, a committed, serious innovator, and with each new novel, he challenges himself - and therefore, the reader - by departing from what he has already achieved and trying something different and new. He has often railed against the proven success formula, its corrupting influence on the artistically and commercially successful writer who voluntarily turns himself into a hack. Adapted to enormous critical acclaim into a Broadway play by Peter Gaitens. An absolute "must-have" title for Michael Cunningham collectors. This copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing is very boldly and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Michael Cunningham. It comes with a pristine copy of the Advance Reader's Edition, which is also very boldly and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by the author. Cunningham, Michael
Golden States
Imprint: New York City, NY, Crown Publishers, 1984
Edition: First Edition
Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 241 pages. The author's debut novel. One of Michael Cunningham's finest - and most underrated - achievements. Uncorrected Proof. Published in a small and limited one-time-only print run as a softcover original only for the exclusive use of the author and publisher. None of the copies was commercially sold. There is no ISBN. The Uncorrected Proof is now scarce. Presents, in its earliest publication state, Michael Cunningham's "Golden States". Ignored by critics and the public alike when it first appeared, during a very stressful and turbulent time (in 1984, at the height of the AIDS catastrophe). According to Michael Cunningham himself, the book sold 17 copies in all. The rest were remaindered (and marked as such) or pulped outright. He has refused to have it reissued in an accessible new edition (it is not even listed in the Published Works page of his subsequent books). After disappearing altogether, copies have since continually resurfaced, after Michael Cunningham won several major awards for his masterpiece-novel, "The Hours" (1998). Assuredly written, his "coming-of-age" novel is composed "with wisdom, humor, and style about a difficult part of any life" (Denis Johnson). Famously and aptly utilizes David Hockney's iconic painting, "Gregory In The Pool", for its cover. An absolute "must-have" title for Michael Cunningham collectors. This copy of the Uncorrected Proof is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "To Rob, a true book detective. Can't believe you tracked this down, Michael Cunningham". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient, who is named, is unmistakably known to - and admired, for his collector's determination and serendipity, by - the author. This title is now collectible. This is the only such signed and uniquely inscribed copy of the Uncorrected Proof available online and despite its imperfection (visible wear on the white softcovers) is still in near-fine condition: Every single internal page is clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online command as much as $600. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. "A Home At The End of The World" was selected as one of "The 200 Best Novels in English Since 1950" by The Modern Library, the most prestigious list of its kind for the period 1950-1999. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature and The Pen/Faulkner Award in 1999 for "The Hours". One of the finest American writers of our time. A fine copy. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Michael Cunningham's "A Home At The End of The World". A sublime fable of a novel. "Novels don't come more deeply felt than Michael Cunningham's extraordinary four-character study. The writing is a constant pleasure, flowing and yet dense with incisive images and psychological nuance" (The Boston Globe). "The story of Jonathan, Clare, Bobby, and Alice is also the story of the 1970's and 1980's. It is destined to last" (David Leavitt). Michael Cunningham himself adapted his novel for the fine film version directed by Michael Mayer, with Colin Farrell, Robin Wright Penn, Sissy Spacek, and Dallas Roberts. An absolute "must-have" title for Michael Cunningham collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Michael Cunningham. "One of America's oldest towns (incorporated in 1720), one of the most idiosyncratic and extraordinary towns in the United States, perched on the sandy tip at the end of Cape Cod" (Publisher's blurb). "Extraordinary. Reminds us that the essence of a place cannot be found in any guidebook" (Time Out). Mother's Days
Imprint: New York City, NY, Little Bear Press, 2002
Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. Unpaginated. Retrospective collection of vintage photographs. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The book remains the single most beautiful title published by Little Bear Press. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Sam Shahid: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Imogen Cunningham. Edited by Bruce Weber with the assistance of Nan Bush and Leslie Lambert. Introduction by John Stevenson. Interview by Bruce Weber with Rondal Partridge, one of Imogen Cunningham's twins, an accomplished photographer in his own right. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Imogen Cunningham's "Mother's Days". Never-before-published photographs by Cunningham, a family album of her three sons, Rondal and Padraic (fondly nicknamed Ron and Pad), who were handsome freckled redhead twins, and their younger brother, Grff. Taken during the 1920's and 1930's, the photographs are inescapably awash with nostalgia today. Charming, wistful, intimate, they recall a time that seems Edenic and gone forever. Imogen Cunningham was a daring pioneer of the male nude (she thought the male body was perfection personified). She photographed her sons nude because she thought they were beautiful as such (they were) and did so without any lewd intentions. The best photographs in this collection are those of the twins shot very closely together, gazing at each other, oblivious of the camera and the outside world. While Cunningham herself thought of the work as a private matter, Weber's own personal fascination with twins is deep-seated; twins are a major motif of his oeuvre (the Brewers and the Carlsons being the most famous) and is surely why he published these photographs in the first place. A lovely tribute to one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century by her surviving son (Ron) and BW. An absolute "must-have" title for Imogen Cunningham collectors. This title is a great photography book. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A scarce copy thus. 38 tritone plates. Two of the finest American photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER BRUCE WEBER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0970574525.

Specimen Days

Edition: First Edition
Binding:

Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 308 pages. The author's fifth novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Michael Cunningham's "Specimen Days". His first novel since the enormous critical and popular success of "The Hours" (1998). Cunningham moves from strength to strength. "The Hours" was inspired by Virginia Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway", and the great author is the main character of the novel. "Specimen Days" is the title of an early masterpiece by Walt Whitman, who appears as an aura, an invisible presence hovering over New York City in the past, the present, and an imagined future (150 years from today). Whitman did write prophetically: "It avails not, neither distance nor place. I am with you, and know how it is". A tribute to the genre novel, "Specimen Days" is in three parts: Part-mystery/ghost story, part-thriller, and part-science fiction, corresponding to its three different time periods. "Brilliantly conceived, empathetic, darkly humorous, and gorgeously rendered, Cunningham's novel about the quest for justice and freedom, the parameters of the soul, the hunger for beauty, and the fluid interface between the natural and the engineered is a genuine literary event" (Booklist). "A smashing literary tour-de-force and an utterly invigorating reading experience. If this book does not make you jump up from the sofa, looking at life and literature in new ways, check to see if you have a pulse" (USA Today). An absolute "must-have" title for Michael Cunningham collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Michael Cunningham. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. Edition: First Edition
Binding:
Hardback
,

Inscription: Signed, inscribed or annotated
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 260 pages. The author's seventh novel. One of Michael Cunningham's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. "Autographed Copy" pasted in front. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Michael Cunningham's "The Snow Queen". Named after the great Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. About a sister who travels arduous distances to save her brother, who has a shard of mirror glass stuck in his eye. "That voice, Cunningham's inimitable style, is the real miracle of 'The Snow Queen'. Sentence by sentence, he moves across the surface of these pages like some suave, literary god. He writes so wisely about the cruel taunting of remission and the way illness both deepens and frays romantic relationships, endowing the dying with a kind of security and purpose that healthy people crave. Full of affecting pathos" (The Washington Post). "We want escapism, of course, but there's another, more complicated, kind of escapism that we also want - an escape into a different, possibly larger, more immediately meaningful world. Fairy tales, movies, novels, they all take us out of the confines of ourselves, of our lives, even if we're perfectly happy with our lives. Because there are other lives too" (Michael Cunningham). An absolute "must-have" title for Michael Cunningham collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (on the day of publication) in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "Michael Cunningham May 6, 2014". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Cunningham launched the book in New York City. Laid-in is the bookmark of the store in which the launch was held and during which his signature was obtained. This also comes with a fine copy of the Printers Row Journal May 2014 Issue, which shows Cunningham on the Cover and features a four-page Interview/Article, "Weaving A Fairy Tale From Life", on "The Snow Queen". First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 12 pages. Preview of the author's collection of modern fairy tales. Now considered a contemporary classic. Advance Promotional Excerpt/Chapbook. Limited Edition, as stated. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published (in May 2015) to announce the release of "A Wild Swan And Other Tales" (in November 2015), seven months later. None of the copies was sold to the public. There is no ISBN. It is a self-contained piece, published in its entirety, about a beautiful young man with one human arm and one swan's wing. "The people and the talismans of lands far, far away, the mythic figures of our childhoods and the source of so much of our wonder are transformed by Michael Cunningham into stories of sublime revelation. Here are the moments that our fairy tales forgot or deliberately concealed: The years after a spell is broken, the rapturous instant of a miracle unexpectedly realized, or the fate of a prince only half-cured of a curse. Reimagined by one of the greatest storytellers of his generation, and exquisitely illustrated by Yuko Shimizu, rarely have our bedtime stories been this dark, this perverse, or this true" (Publisher's blurb). "We want escapism, of course, but there's another, more complicated, kind of escapism that we also want - an escape into a different, possibly larger, more immediately meaningful world. This Autographed Copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (two days after publication) in black pen-marker on the title page by the author: "Michael Cunningham November 12, 2015 NYC". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a bookplate. This title will become a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, placed, and dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Cunningham launched the book in a one-time-only appearance in New York City, and did not tour to promote the book. So the publisher issued a limited number of signed bookplates to satisfy public demand. Da Vinci, Leonardo (Artist); Brunenberg, Jo (Artist/Photographer) & Coumans, W. (Contributor/Poet)
Immagini Scoperte ("discovered Images") : Photographs By Jo Brunenberg
Imprint: Weert, The Netherlands, Jo Brunenberg Studios, 1990
Edition: First Edition
First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 30 pages. Artist Book. Collection of super-imposed photographs. One of the most unusual and most beautiful erotic art photography books of our time. The first and only edition. Published in a tiny print run as a softcover original only. The Artist Book is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Jo Brunenberg: Oversize-volume format. Ribbed cream softcovers with titles on the cover, as issued. Art by Leonardo da Vinci. Photographic tableaux/superimpositions by Jo Brunenberg. Essay by Willem K. Coumans. The piece is a Dionysian counter-voice to Brunenberg's coolly Apollonian imagery, written as a rhapsody, as delirium and ecstasy, and in a style that fuses Friedrich Nietzsche with Walt Whitman, two of modern photography's philosophical mentors. Printed on glassine and pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in The Netherlands to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in a lovely collectible format, Jo Brunenberg's "Immagini Scoperte". Male nudes, an homage to the genius of Leonardo da Vinci. Each male nude is superimposed with a sketch from Leonardo's scientific notebooks. Brunenberg appropriates Leonardo's exquisite sketches and poses his full-frontal nude models as though they were interacting with, and in some cases, completing Leonardo's drawings, in seamless fusion. One of the most beautiful resulting images is "Camera Obscura", which shows one model seemingly taking a photograph of another using Leonardo's imaginary instrument. As is well-known, Leonardo anticipated by more than four hundred years the invention of the camera (and therefore, photography), among other epochally visionary achievements of the greatest artist in Western history. "Originating from an interplay with Leonardo's scientific drawings, Emanating from the Human Body, they form a Theatrum Anatomicum of their own, with Man as the Measure of All Things, reaching out for the Light and aware of the Freedom that is close by. Images that are Witness to both Sight and Insight, realized with great precision yet lyrical in content. Head lifted to the heavens, Man stands Radiant and spreads his wings" (Willem K. Coumans, capital letters are all his). In lesser hands, this would have dismally flopped. Brunenberg's taste, restraint, and conviction make his imagery among the most original, compelling, and unforgettable nudes one will ever see. Inspired by Leonardo indeed. An absolute "must-have" title for Jo Brunenberg and erotic art photography collectors. This title is a late-modern erotic art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Artist Book still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. 20 superimposed photographic plates. One of the finest artist/photographers of the male nude of our time. A fine copy. . ISBN B003BLABMM.

Presents "Aaron Siskind: Order With The Tensions Continuing". Abstract photographs from the late 1940's to the early 1960's by the one photographer who is credited with having brought photography into the 20th century. The title comes from one of Aaron Siskind's most celebrated works. Siskind started out as a documentary photographer and was one of the finest photographers associated with The Photo League, which aimed to marry street and art photography with social concerns and moral conscience. Siskind's book during his early period, "Harlem Document", is now considered a classic. It is also widely acknowledged, however, that his most important artistic output resulted from his crucial shift to Abstract Expressionism. The Abstract Expressionists considered Siskind's abstract photographs not only to be on the same level as their work in the traditional media (primarily, painting). Precisely because Siskind continued to work in photography, he introduced a whole new dimension to the Movement that they themselves did not conceive possible, and Siskind consequently influenced them as much as they influenced him. These photographs are now between 40 and 60 years old, but they have lost none of their cutting-edge vitality, breadth of imagination, and formal elegance. They are "at once sensual, intellectual, and spiritual, and provide a powerful expression of his artistic vision" (Stephen Daiter). An absolute "must-have" title for Aaron Siskind collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the Exhibition Catalog still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A scarce copy thus. 21 tonally rich reproductions from vintage photographs. "Aaron Siskind Photographs" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER AARON SISKIND TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Twenty-seven contributors were invited to choose their favorite Kertesz photograph, and then to write about it. These are not self-indulgent, lazy pieces. As Daiter notes, the vintage images assembled showcase Kertesz's visual sensibility and genius. "Some of the photographs are Classically familiar while others are refeshingly obscure. Each of the contributors shared his or her time and talents enthusiastically. The juxtaposition of image with text resulted in a sparkling mixture of memory, emotion, and scholarship" (Publisher's blurb). Some of the contributors include Katherine Bang, Paul Berlanga, Keith Davis, Willem Diepraam, John Gossage, Robert Gurbo, Martin Parr, Sylvia Plachy, Gary Schneider, David Travis, and seventeen other "testimonees" to Andre Kertesz's greatness. To honor Kertesz with observations, thoughts, and reflections is to honor him at the deepest level: He was a great artist because he was a conscious dreamer. An absolute "must-have" title for Andre Kertesz collectors. This is a copy of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition of 100 numbered copies.
